Hand Vacuum Degassing Chamber - Resin Degassing TCBeads 2016-03-13 | Degassing small resin applications had been the bane of my existence. I swear. While trolling some Youtube videos, I came across one describing a small hand pump vacuum chamber used for food storage."Hmmm," I thinks to myself, "I wonder if that thing would work to degas resin?"I found a set at Walmart.com on sale for $15.00 (+$5.00 to ship) called "VacuumSaver." I tried degassing a small amount of resin as soon as this thing arrived less than a week later. Results were satisfactory for my needs. Resin Emojis TCBeads 2016-01-31 | There's probably 100 ways to make these. I used plastic wiggle eyes and black wire to make some funny resin cast emoji faces. Push the eyes into the resin when it reaches the "gooey" stage. Let that set then pour another layer of resin and add a wire mouth. Let set completely before un-molding. 2 Types of Silicone Mold Fails TCBeads 2016-01-24 | I tried again. Failed again. I'm pretty sure the silicone-caulk-in-soapy-water mold method just doesn't work. I also tried the silicone mixed with cornstarch method. After 12 hours, it may still not be completely cured, or it's a total fail. I'll know by tomorrow. Silicone Mold Fail TCBeads 2016-01-17 | A viewer suggested I look into this. I did. And failed. Darn it. I think it's a conspiracy. What else could explain it?? ;) What you're supposed to do:Use 100% silicone caulking (clear) to create reusable molds. Mix the caulking into some water mixed with dish soap. Acrylic Paint Marbled Resin TCBeads 2016-01-03 | People have been telling me to try using acrylic paint in resin for several years. I finally tried it, but the results were less than great. I'd call this a fail, actually. The paint breaks out of the resin as it cures, oozing to the surface covering the resin rather than staying contained within it. Curing also often produced ugly ridges and holes in the resin. I'll try a couple more times, but I'm not very hopeful about this technique's success. Faux Druzy TCBeads 2015-09-13 | I tried my hand at making faux druzy using crushed gemstone chips, micro glitter and Mod Podge Dimensional Magic. I used a 1" acrylic disc for a base, but any flat stable surface could work. I covered the surface with a layer of glittered nail polish for camouflage. Mod Podge Dimensional Magic is a nice product, but it isn't terribly durable. Don't even think about getting it wet because it breaks down and dissolves in seconds. Every third weekend in August the whole country shows up to drive around in a circle on Woodward Avenue, a historic stretch of road that spans two counties: Wayne and Oakland. Woodward Avenue was the first paved road in the world, but my father remembers when it was still a dirt and gravel "country road" after you left the city limits of Detroit. People from everywhere drive or haul their automotive masterpieces to be admired by about a million people over the weekend. Blinding flashes of chrome and every color imaginable comprise the spectacle. Yes, there are DeLoreans. I saw two. Car enthusiasts, usually men, spend years of their lives and fortunes in labor and wealth restoring these massive hulks of metal, some 100 years old, that were once the height of technological advancement in the West. For idea buffs like me, this weekend represents so much more than a fun, exciting, aesthetically thrilling hobby for others. It represents the whole idea of independence in American and Western culture. Freedom is organized chaos at it's best. No camp directors. Barely any cops. Zero tolerance for mass transit or bureaucratic regulations. Just going out for a drive, because you can. DIY Beading Tray TCBeads 2015-07-26 | Make your own beading tray for less than $6.00! You'll need a sturdy plastic tray, around 12" X 10". Some Vellux fabric to fit the tray (you can often find this pre-cut from bead supply sources.) Some heavy duty "stick on" Velcro. Cheap. Easy. Durable. Functional. The Velcro keeps the Vellux from sliding around on the tray. I also whine about trying to clean out my hopeless bead stash. I have no idea how to organize all this chit. It's such a mess! Gawd! More Bead Embroidered Shoes TCBeads 2015-04-26 | Another method of bead embroidery directly on to a pair of canvas sneakers. Very easy and super cute result. I really just wanted to show you how I layered a row of beads on top of a row of beaded brick to finish a bricked edge while hiding the thread. I hope that's helpful for any of your bead embroidered projects. I purchased this pair of canvas shoes from Walmart for $6.00, but if you're brave and confident, you can use a more expensive pair to bead on, of course. While I think the finished shoes are pretty durable, they're probably best for just walking around in. I wouldn't climb any trees or do any hiking in the wilderness in these when complete. :) I'd love to see what you come up with should you try this yourself. Painted Plexiglass - Acrylic Components TCBeads 2015-01-04 | As the title suggests, I tried using some Pebeo paint I received from my friend Christine on some large plexiglass shapes purchased from two Etsy sellers. Then I used Artist Tape to create line patterns on the pieces.They came out fantastic and will make wonderful components for beading. I plan to use them specifically for bead embroidery projects. Laser cutters can make any kind of shape out of acrylic and plexiglass sheets.
