Press Conference :: The Happy Few, a study on the financialisation of elderly care. transformeurope 2025-01-30 | transform! europe, has commissioned a team of researchers on an investigation of how investment funds and other financial actors are taking over elderly care homes all around the European Union. The report presented in the webinar is entitled "The Happy Few: How European Elderly Care Has Been Financialised, How Benefits From It, and Which Counterstrategies To Deploy". It builds on an impressive European-wide collaboration between eight researchers, mapping the way financial corporations have been taking over the elderly care sector in six countries (France, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Croatia, and Portugal). The report makes three crucial points: 1) the financialisation of elderly care is spreading, 2) it is dangerous for patients and care workers, 3) but it is not an inevitable trend. Even though it happens in many countries at the same time, it is driven by a small number of very large groups located in 2-3 countries, that spread financial logics all around Europe in a top-down manner. It can be countered by deploying activist strategies against these actors at the European level, and we map the successful strategies that have already been experimented in particular countries.The presentation of this study to journalists and broader audience took place online on the 11th of Spetember with Théo Bourgeron (coordinator of the study), Ayoze Alfageme Ramirez (one of the authors and co-responsible for the analysis of the Spanish case) and Cornelia Hildebrandt (co-vice president of transform! europe). What can we learn from this peace process and the search for compromise in changing circumstances? In this Webinar organised by transform! europe and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, we discuss these and other questions.25 years ago, the Good Friday Agreement ended the Northern Ireland conflict that had lasted for years - one of the fiercest, bloodiest conflicts between the British and Irish in the North of Ireland. While the overwhelming majority of Protestant Unionists continued to see Northern Ireland as part of Great Britain, the mostly Catholic Nationalists favored unification with the Republic of Ireland. This conflict has cost the lives of more than 3,500 people. After the phase of escalation due to discrimination against the Catholic population by Political unionists, a difficult and repeatedly fragile peace process developed over the years, which finally came to an end in 1998 with the Good Friday Agreement between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. This agreement included in particular the willingness to disarm the paramilitary units of the (provisional) Irish Republican Army (IRA), the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) as well as the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), the release of underground fighters from prisons and a clarification of the fates of the disappeared and victims of the conflict, including the IRA as well as the Northern Ireland police of the British military, the secret services and loyalist paramilitaries.In addition, the Good Friday Agreement set out a conditional, consensual way of uniting Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland if the majority of people on both sides agreed to this by referendum. The agreement is based on the three principles of partnership, equality, and mutual respect.However, due to Brexit, the conditions have changed fundamentally, and the agreement seems to be challenged in a new way with the new EU external borders between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The compromise now reached on the Northern Ireland Protocol between the British government under Rishi Sunak and the European Union has been acknowledged by pro-protocol parties. The question is, can it be implemented politically? Alternativa de Seguridad Colectiva Desmilitarizada transformeurope 2022-06-25 | En estos momentos confrontan dos modelos de Seguridad. Uno que pretende acrecentar el miedo y la inseguridad en gran parte de la ciudadanía generando enemigos externos, para poder relacionar Seguridad con defensa militar, de manera que se asocie que una comunidad más segura es aquella que tiene más poderío militar, este modelo es el que se está desarrollando en la Cumbre de la OTAN que se prepara para ser el instrumento de militarización del Planeta en una nueva Guerra Fría. Otro modelo es el defendemos al plantear un concepto de seguridad global, en el marco de unas relaciones internacionales basadas en la cooperación y resolución de los conflictos desde el diálogo y la negociación, este modelo no necesita incrementar el poder militar, sino que por el contrario plantea la desmilitarización como base para generar una seguridad global que garantice una vida digna, con derechos y libertades a todos los habitantes del Planeta. Este Modelo es el que desarrollamos en la Cumbre de la Paz que prepara al Movimiento Pacifista para conseguir un mundo de Paz y Progreso para toda la Humanidad.

100 Shades of the EU - Mapping the Political Economy of EU Peripheries study presentation transformeurope 2022-06-20 | Veronika Susova-Salminen and Guiseppe Celi present the study "100 Shades of the EU - Mapping the Political Economy of EU Peripheries".This study concentrates on two euro-peripheries, Southern Europe and Central and South East Europe. It covers 17 Member States analysed from economic, political and ideological perspectives, and compares with each other, including their relations to the core.The goal of the work now presented is to understand how core-periphery dynamics shape the EU and what it means to be a peripheral state in the EU. We concentrate on limits, constraints, opportunities and the historical embeddedness of peripherality, and on problems stemming from the peripheral position in the EU.These questions are answered by focusing on several dimensions of peripherality in the EU: economic peripherality, political peripherality and ideological/symbolic peripherality, and mutual interactions.The presentation is held in English.
