Among the international left, there is a consensus that because Russia officially abandoned Communist ideology in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, that Russia can somehow be characterized as 'imperialist' or representing global capitalism - but nohting can be farther from the truth. The truth is that the end of the USSR left an ideological vacuum that was never filled.
