This video essay serves three purposes.
1) To understand Why Social Democracy is Not Enough and why nearly ALL governments still govern in favor of the dominant classes. 2) To explain the Marxist theory of the capitalist state and what oversimplified versions of it get wrong. Most notably, the notion of a "dictatorship of the bourgeoisie" is misleading and cannot account for the fact that the ruling class need not "rule" the government (directly or indirectly) in order to still "rule" society. 3) To explain how the working class are systemically excluded from institutional power and from changing the state and its legal code, the code that enables the reproduction of capitalism.

In this video, we look at the politics of the Dune series by Frank Herbert through the lens of Ibn Khaldun, and in turn, we explore Ibn Khaldun's theories through the lens Dune. Ibn Khaldun was a 14th-century historian, philosopher, sociologist, economist, and "social scientist" more broadly. He is most famous for the "Muqaddimah." Through the lens of the Dune I and Dune II movies (and the Dune Novel series more broadly), we will explore Ibn Khaldun's proto-realist theory of religion, group power, the rise and fall of civilizations, and the cycle of empires. Enjoy!

This 1Dime video is a documentary about the history and evolution of US Democracy, based on the political theory of Sheldon Wolin and his book “Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism” and the Expanded Edition of his book “Politics and Vision: Continuity and Innovation in Western Political Thought.” Wolin’s theories, popularized by the likes of Chris Hedges and Noam Chomsky, are very important for understanding the nature of the American system and what makes it different from other capitalist liberal democracies. My own work (seen in the 1Dime videos and my upcoming book "Freedom To Change Nothing: The Spectrum of Managed Democracy and What Makes the US Different") builds on Wolin’s book "Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism" and adds a lot to his theories while also going beyond them, covering certain things Wolin missed.
The decline of Democracy in America and the rise of authoritarianism did not start with Donald Trump. The democratic deficit goes much deeper, and the situation we are currently in is the product of many historical precedents set over a long period of history. The fate of democracy depends on our ability to confront this history. Watch the full video to see why.

This is a video essay documentary on The Philosophy of Herbert Marcuse, particularly his book titled "One-Dimensional Man." Marcuse is one of the most famous philosophers of the 20th century from the notorious “Frankfurt School” of Critical Theory. Marcuse is often thought of as a “Guru of the New Left” and is often misunderstood by those who only read his book “Eros and Civilization” but not his later works such as One-Dimensional Man and Counter-Revolution and Revolt. Marcuse became a contentious figure due to being a mentor to Angela Davis and giving (critical) support to the Student Movement of 1968 and the late 60s.

This video is about the notion of "controlled opposition," whereby I present an alternative theory called "Contained Opposition and the Desublimation of Protest.” This theory addresses some major gaps in contemporary understandings of power, resistance, good governance, and how "liberal democracies" such as the US maintain hegemony in comparison to other regimes. In order to change the world, we need to first understand how our current Society of Control ( “The Matrix” of our existing system) works.
Most importantly, this video addresses the problems such as the cycle of activist burnout, depoliticization, and the trap of protest demonstrations. Those who liked the visual style of The Burnout Society video will enjoy this new 1Dime experiment. I wanted the aesthetic of this video to be as engaging as a Johnny Harris video, but more artistic and gritty. Why is the United States still considered a "legitimate" liberal democracy unlike the "Phantom Democracies" seen in countries such as Russia, Turkey, and Singapore? Does having a Two-Party System make America more democratic than a one-party state? Could the election of Donald Trump lead to the end of democracy? As we will see, "The Real Threat to American Democracy" involves a lot more than Trump. The argument being made in this video essay is NOT merely that the US is not a democracy or that America's Two-Party Corporate Duopoly is undemocratic. This video is about a LOT more than that. This video is also about the "Simulation of Democracy" and how different types of regimes legitimize their authority. In this video, we consider whether the USA is also a "phantom democracy" and how the American regime maintains greater democratic "legitimacy" compared to other countries with nominally "democratic" systems that lack real democratic substance.
In the second half, I draw on the theories of Jean Baudrillard on Simulation and Hyperreality to understand why most Americans, even those on the left, still buy into the spectacle of American Politics and the facade of US electoralism despite the obvious democratic deficit in American society and its elections. I consider the role of Donald Trump's election and whether Trumpism and "populism" represent a threat to the legitimacy of American Democracy OR if this actually reinforces the myth of democracy. Lastly, I consider how democratic revolutions differed in America compared to Europe and how the unique legacy of the American Revolution fosters national mythology that obstructs democratization.

In this 1Dime documentary, I attempt to provide a relatively balanced historical account of one of the most misunderstood events in modern history: The Chinese Cultural Revolution (The CR), also known as the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" (GPCR) launched by Mao Zedong. In this video, we explore how the Cultural Revolution began, what happened, how it ended, and what Chairman Mao’s goal was with it.
The Cultural Revolution is easily the most misunderstood era of Mao's China and the history of the People's Republic of China as a whole. The Cultural Revolution has had a significant impact on modern China and to this day, the CPC likes to tightly regulate the discourse surrounding it. As we will see, this is because the Cultural Revolution and the Red Guard rebellions that it unleashed represented the biggest threat to the Communist Party of China in its history.

This video delves into the deep-seated, undemocratic nature of the American political system, its system of "checks and balances," the roles of the Supreme Court, the Senate, and Congress and how the separation of powers, far from being a virtue of US Democracy, is one of its most undemocratic features, as it limits political democracy to a propertied minority while foreclosing economic democracy for the propertyless majority. The video also critiques the naive views of social democrats and encourages people to envision alternative conceptions of genuine economic democracy. The Separation of Powers is BROKEN, Here’s Why.

This video is about how Ideology has changed in Post-Soviet Russia and the various tactics of social control that enable the Putin regime to rule. Some of these include culture war tactics that have now become quite prevalent in North America today. Many liberals have tried to pin down the actions of the Kremlin to a particular "ideology" of the Putin Regime. However, such approaches that overstate the role of ideology in driving Putin's actions miss the bigger picture: which is that the ideology of the Putin regime is actually quite vacuous and is merely a flexible rhetorical device for rationalizing the Kremlin's foreign policy and legitimizing The United Russia Party's rule. As we have seen since the first episode of this series Ideology of the Putin regime has changed greatly over time, from pro-western aspirations and an open commitment to Neoliberalism to a conservative collectivist shift that transpired in accordance with the souring of Russia-US Ties.

Automation under capitalism or Automation under socialism? The differences would be life changing and could manifest in various ways. How could automation impact our lives? Who will own the robots? In this video we explore four possible futures. However, these futures could intersect and we may not just get one of them, as some of the futures are highly related to each other and are already relevant to capitalist societies today. This video analyzes the relationship between automation, post-scarcity, climate change, and political economy using Peter Frase's book titled "Four Futures: Life After Capitalism" among other works.

What's going on in Canadian politics? Is Canada a progressive country? Here is a practical (totally serious and not biased) guide to the political parties of Canada and their ideological differences. While most people don't care about Canada's elections or Canadian politics in general, there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding Canadian society and a lack of YouTubers who analyze it from a leftist perspective.

What happened to Hip Hop Music? How did it become commercialized? What is "Mumble Rap"? Find out in this video about The Culture Industry.
This video explores how Capitalism impacted Hip Hop music using Theodor Adorno’s theory of “The Culture Industry” and “Standardization” in Popular Music. We go over how corporate incentives and consumer ideology impact the production of rap music and how one dimensional standardized music formulas condition how people listen to music. We also discuss how various aspects of the music industry such as the media spectacle, marketing, corporate interests, streaming platforms, and record labels impact rap music both in terms of sound and its materialistic subject matter.

In this video, we discuss the relationship between the 1960's Counterculture, hippies, psychedelia, and past & present socialist movements. We will analyze the problems and lost potentials of these movements through the lens of the late Mark Fisher's concepts of "Acid Communism" , Capitalist Realism, Lost Futures, Hauntology, and Post-Work. Do Billionaires support Democrats? Which Billionaires support Democrats? Why would Billionaires Prefer Democrats? This video is a systemic analysis of the long term and short term interests of capitalism and the politics that regulate it. The question as to why many billionaires like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Jeff Bezos support and/or vote for Democrats does get addressed so we highly suggest watching the video essay to the end to get the full picture.
