Kitchen Aid Worm Gear oxtoolco 2024-08-05 | A little worm gear machining for you. A friend at work asked if I could make a more durable gear for his wife's Kitchen Aid mixer. Replacement gears are readily available but don't last under the heavy loads of dough hook bread kneading. We make a new one out of a tough strong bronze alloy.The stock gear in the Kitchen Aid is not a full enveloping worm but a helical spur gear. This is done for ease of assembly and reducing tight tolerances required in assembly for a full enveloping worm gear system. The stock gear is made from a stiff nylon plastic over molded on an aluminum hub. One theory is this nylon gear is also used for some mechanical overload protection of the gearing.If the testing goes well I would be a good follow on video to make another that is a true helical gear or a fully enveloping worm using the dogmeat helical indexer shown in a previous video. Triple Clamp Pivot oxtoolco 2023-05-01 | Finally some machining content for my loyal Oxen! In this video we machine a triple clamp pivot shaft for one of the kiddo's at work. He is building a custom pit bike using a 2006 Kawasaki KLX110 frame with all 2009 Cobra CX65 race suspension or whatever that means.... I chose 1144 "Stressproof" steel for this part because of its high as rolled strength and ease of machining. The most challenging task is the deep hole drilling of this part.

Epic Egress 6 Shop Update oxtoolco 2022-04-11 | Shop updates for all the interested folks. Stan Zinkosky from Bar Z Industrial development came up and we did some major electrical work to the shop. We have some video clips of the progress and upgrades to the shop 3phase power distribution. We installed an American Rotary AI 30 outdoor rotary phase converter and wired it into a new three phase breaker panel. We also ran a fair amount of conduit for the distribution to the different areas of the shop. In addition I have some clips of a new machine that is coming to the Oxtools shop. Honey Doo Drill Bit oxtoolco 2021-04-13 | A little different video for me. I make a special drill bit for a honey doo job. The drill itself is a spoof but the method is identical to how you would make a steel cutting tool. The electronic gearing was a collaboration between me and my friend Mr Bill. I did the mechanical work and he worked out the control scheme. The servo motor position is synchronized to the milling machine table movement via an encoder connected to the milling machine axis and is fully programmable for different helical solutions. The control is also capable of doing direct number indexes. If you have ever done high count indexing you will appreciate the ability to push a button and make your index move. Canned Tuna Dewatering Press oxtoolco 2021-04-03 | Yes you read correctly a press for tuna. My requested a tool to assist in dewatering canned tuna. The commercial offerings are pathetic and still require decent hand strength to operate. I played around with some different leverage ideas and then settled on a simple screw press. Power Chamfering Tool oxtoolco 2021-03-21 | After twenty years I finally decided to build my power chamfering tool. Its probably good that I waited until there were better cordless options than the original pneumatic die grinder I was planning on using for this project. This tool is used to break the thousands of edges you have to deburr in the course of normal shop work. You can pass small parts through the vee block or the entire tool can be slid along the edge you want to chamfer. Plans will be available shortly after I clean up the chicken sketches.

This setup replaces most of the old school mechanical gear train used for cutting helical features. The ratio is nearly infinitely adjustable to accommodate helical cuts found in milling cutters, drill bits, helical gears, worms, and threads. This proof of principle system was developed for making special long length magnet mandrels that are too long for most CNC machining centers.
