The film takes place 75 million years ago in Cretaceous Alberta and follows a male lambeosaurus searching for a mate during the changing spring season. This is the third short film in my "Dinosauria Animated Series" and was the most difficult film of the series so far. I'm really happy with how it turned out though. I'm particularly proud of the atmosphere and visuals on display. I think this might just be the prettiest film I've ever made! The backdrops are certainly the most detailed I've ever produced for a short film and I don't think I've ever been this ambitious with my colour-use before. This film paints a serene but bittersweet world that I'm really, really proud of! ^_^

SAURIA will be a 3-part anthological animated series. Each episode will be about 7-10 minutes long and each focuses on a different major aspect of this dark fantasy world. Combined, they will build up to present the brutal and primordial land of SAURIA! I've been working on this series for around 8 months, ever since 'Dinosauria' finished up. I challenged myself to create the coolest thing I could imagine, and so SAURIA was born! This series is a real amalgamation of all my disparate interests. Dinosaurs, monsters, dark-fantasy, wildlife, and nature... all mixed together with a little bit of H.P Lovecraft. Hope you are all excited! :D
All the films will be uploaded here to my Youtube channel so make sure to subscribe if you're interested. You can also directly support this series by supporting me on Patreon.
This video covers my creative process behind "Locked Doors", my most recent animated short film. "Locked Doors" is a film that only took me 14 days to make... but those 14 days were spread across 3 and a half years. This makes "Locked Doors" both the shortest and longest animation production I've ever taken on. Hope you all enjoy! ^_^
"Locked Doors" is about a man stuck on a broken-down spaceship waiting for rescue. He has no idea what caused the wreck. His whole crew has mysteriously vanished, the ship has been overrun by strange vegetation, and he is slowly losing his mind. The one thing that's keeping the man alive is his curiosity about what may lie behind the one and only locked door aboard the ship...
Hope you guys like this weird little film I made! I would describe the film as a dark-comedy science fiction film heavily inspired by the horror works of H.P Lovecraft. I haven't made a stand-alone short film that wasn't part of some huge overarching series for years. It was really refreshing going back and working on a simpler, one-off film. Despite its seeming simplicity; "Locked Doors" actually had the wackiest behind-the-secnes production of any of my films so far. I made this film in just 14 days and the experience drove me nearly insane. If you want to know more; feel free to check out the "Making Of" video! ^_^ youtu.be/Q9aJTnjUZ9s
I love dinosaurs. I always have, and I've been trying to make them come to life for as long as I can remember. I started with pencils and plasticine when I was a kid and have since moved onto clay and animation as an adult. Dinosaurs inspired me to be creative from a very young age and that never went away. My Dinosauria Series is a lot more than just a series of animated short films. I've been treating it like a gigantic artistic and educational adventure. The animated short films might be the end result but I've been doing so much more work than just that. I've been doing research, drawings, and even sculptures for these animations.

This is the fifth short film in my "Dinosauria Animated Series". It is set 66 million years ago in Late Cretaceous North America and covers the dramatic extinction event that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs.
On the surface, this film seems like it’s just about the death of dinosaurs, but that wasn't supposed to be the focus of this film. I instead set out to create a film about the fantastic legacy of these very real animals, and the inspiration they have given so many of us. I have been dino-obsessed my whole life, and they’re my No. 1 source of creative motivation, which means they’re a huge part of who I am as a person. This film is FULL of big and small references to almost all of my previous dinosaur-related works, and the huge collection of fossils, paleo-media, and real-life experiences that lead me to create this very series! I didn’t set out to make 'The Last Tyrant' a sad and tragic film about the death of the dinosaurs. That does happen and it is sad, but what I truly wanted to set out and make was a film celebrating the way these animals lived and the lifelong effect they’ve had on me, and many, many others. Thank you all for watching! ^_^

This film is set 85 million years ago in the Niobrara Formation and follows a group of Geosternbergia (Pteranodon sternbergi) trying to hunt during a thunderstorm... but there are dangerous creatures in these Cretaceous seas. This is the fourth short film in my "Dinosauria Animated Series" even though it does not actually feature any dinosaurs.
The general pop-culture depiction of pterosaurs is far more outdated than that of dinosaurs. Pterosaur depictions in mainstream media remain mostly unchanged since the Ray Harryhausen days, often being portrayed as squawking, flapping, sky-vermin which I really wanted to challenge with this film. In my opinion, this is the most realistic-feeling film of the series as I wrote it to mimic exactly the type of scenario you'd see play out in a nature-documentary segment. This was because I wanted to portray Geosternbergia as an inspirational, realistic animal and I felt stripping back as many fantastical elements as I could was the correct way to go about doing that. Overall; I really like this little film. FAR more than I expected to. I think it has grown to become my second favourite of the series, just after "Our Frozen Past"! ^_^

This short film takes place 69 million years ago in Cretaceous Alaska and follows a mother Troodon as she and her brood try to survive the coldest and most desperate times of the year.
This is the second short film in my "Dinosauria Animated Series" and is probably my favourite of the collection. This particular film has a lot of far-fetched speculative ideas when it comes to dinosaur behaviour and appearance, but that really doesn't hurt my opinion of it in the slightest. I love the pacing, atmosphere, dinosaur designs, and storytelling. This short film was also just a blast to make and I'm really happy with it! :D Hope you all enjoy it as well.

This is the first short film in my "Dinosauria Animated Series". This film takes place in Alberta, Canada 75 million years ago and follows an old alpha-male styracosaurus as he defends his territory from a rival male. This was a far simpler film to make in comparison to what I've been doing for the past few years, but I personally found it a refreshing change of pace because of that. I needed something fun and (relatively) easy after the nightmarish production of my last animated short film, "Immortal Machine". This wonderful, simple film was a blast to make and reminded me that animation and filmmaking are still passions of mine. It holds a very specific and sentimental place in my heart because of that. In fact, I enjoyed making this film so much that what was meant to be one simple film about dinosaurs turned into a whole series about them! :D I hope you all like it as well!
This is the trailer for my upcoming animated "Dinosauria" series. It's an animated anthology paleoart series of short films covering the lives of dinosaurs. There will be 5 films in the series and they range from 3-8 minutes in length. This has been a real passion project for me. I love dinosaurs and I've treated this project as one big excuse to start drawing, sculpting, animating, and researching them! I've been hard at work on this series for many, many months now and I'm excited to finally start sharing some of it with you all! ^_^
At the moment the series only covers late Cretaceous North America/Canada but I will happily expand to different times and places if I decide to continue the series beyond 5 films.
This is a video covering my creative process designing the "Matriarch" character for my Autodale Animated series. The Matriarch is a character that has existed for a very long time. She actually predates the series itself just like the Freaks. She has gone through by far the most redesigns and rewrites throughout the years and has had the messiest creative journey of any character I've ever created. This doesn't mean it was a bad journey, though. Sometimes the creative process is messy and constantly evolving which is fascinating and fun to explore in its own right. This character's four-year story is a great example of that! ^_^ Please Enjoy!
This is a video covering my creative process designing the "Mayor/Great Inventor" character for my Autodale Animated series. Working on "Immortal Machine" was very difficult and stressful but creating the "Mayor" really was a highlight. I spent a lot of time writing his backstory and designing his monstrous appearance. He's one of my favourite characters in the Autodale series. Making this creative process video was a lot of fun and reminded me how much I enjoyed the early stages of the "Immortal Machine" project. Never has a making of video felt so much like therapy! XD

It is the first of three "making of" videos covering this film. The other two will be covering the design, lore, and creative process behind Autodale's "Mayor" and "Matriarch" .
Maaaaan, this was a long time coming. I've wanted to make an animated short film covering the Matriarch and Autodale's history for as long as the series has existed but it was only now I felt technically and artistically experienced enough to tackle it. This film was harder than "Friendly Shadow" even with it being 33% shorter. I threw as much as I possibly could into this project and I'm very proud of the result on a technical level. Please enjoy! :D
"You think you understand? All the lies? All the needless atrocities?... No. There is reason, and I want to show you..."
Deep in the heart of Autodale lives their Mayor. As old as the town itself, a once great inventor, now a gangly and decaying but undying thing which the townsfolk have long forgotten, but continue to echo his machine-obsessed beliefs. This film follows Autodale's Exceptional Woman as she journey's deep down the rabbit hole of the Mayor's Immortal Machine.
This film was one of the most challenging and taxing projects of my life. The film covers a subject matter that is extremely difficult to pull off from an artistic and technical standpoint. Nothing about the setting, characters or structure of this film was easy to do. That's actually the reason I've put off tackling the heart of Autodale and the Matriarch for so long. I knew to pull it off successfully would require a tremendous amount of time, effort and artistic know-how which I didn't feel confident I could do. It wasn't until after finishing my previous and longest animated short film, "Friendly Shadow", that I finally felt that I was at the skill level required for this gigantic project. I'm not in love with all of it, but overall I think it definitely succeeded. This film is extremely ambitious and grand and I'm extremely proud of the result. I really hope you guys like it too! :D
Voice Actors: Adrienne Cox - "Exceptional Woman", "Hive", "The Matriarch". David Armsby - "The Mayor"
This is a video covering my creative process designing the "Exceptional Girl"/"Hive" character for my Autodale Animated series. This was an interesting character to cover because she made her debut in "No Monsters", and was further expanded, 3 years later in "Friendly Shadow". Hive has been part of the Autodale mythos since pretty much the beginning. I've wanted to expand and explain her for years and it's extremely satisfying to finally cover her here. Revisiting and expanding the character after 3 years of hiatus was a strange experience. I didn't just need to redesign the character, but also give her a voice, motivation, and some characterisation. It was a blast returning to this character and to finally explain what I tried to set up back in 2017! :D
This is a video covering my creative process designing the "Friendly Shadow" character for my Autodale Animated series. I don't think I've ever put as much thought and effort into the backstory, lore, and motivation of one of my characters. It took me a long time to figure out exactly who the Friendly Shadow was going to be and I think he's probably my best-written character to date. In this video, I cover my initial ideas for the character, my research, my early drawings and concepts, eventually leading into a 3D model to be rigged, textured and animated. I also cover his personality and his controversial standing on Autodale's dystopian ways. It was a joy bringing this character to life and I hope you enjoy this video covering that! ^_^
This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Friendly Shadow". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes of the film. This video is the first of three "making of" videos I'll be making covering this film. The other two will be more like my "Creative Process" videos. They will be covering the design, lore, and creative process behind the "Hive" and "Friendly Shadow" characters, respectively.
This film was a tremendous undertaking. It's the longest animated film I've ever made and likewise, this is the longest behind-the-scenes video I've ever made too. I had to chop out 50% of the script for this video because it was just getting far too long. This project as so huge and complicated that I could easily talk for hours about it. I feel this particular making-of video is a bit of mess in places but that mirrors the process of making the "Friendly Shadow" quite well so I guess it's appropriate. :P
"Hello, Citizens of Autodale!" "This Public Service Announcement is following ludicrous concerns and whispers we've been hearing as of late. Silly claims of monsters and other loathsome things living within our city walls!" "There are no monsters here, citizens. Not in Autodale!"
This film follows a detective that Autodale's public knows as the "Friendly Shadow". Autodale makes an effort to keep the monstrous creatures that lurk outside their walls from entering the city but somehow, incursions and attacks are becoming more and more frequent as of late. It appears that one particular monster-breach got very violent very fast and the Friendly Shadow is sent to investigate.
This film was a colossal amount of work, as you can imagine. It's the longest animated film I've ever made. I've been working on this project for just over 10 months now and the number of sheer man-hours I've put into this one film is something I don't want to think about. I'm extremely proud of this film, though. It's very near and dear to my heart. I think it's a decent film, with a decent story and I'm very chuffed I managed to pull it off. It's one of the most ambitious projects I've ever attempted and I think it turned out pretty awesome. I REALLY hope you guys like it too! ^_^
This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Model Citizen". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes of the film. This video also covers my return to the Autodale universe in general. I've been away from this series for more than a year and its legacy is easily the thing my channel is most known for. This is the short film all of you seemed to want and If I were to return to the series; I was going to do it right. A huge chunk of this video is dedicated to the preparation and research I had to do to get back into the mindset of the universe I created all the way back in late 2016. Hope you enjoy! ^_^ This particular "making-of" was a blast to make!
"What is a Model Citizen? A Model Citizen is a providing father. A Model Citizen is a caring mother, all in service of a scrappy, young boy or girl. A Model Child raised by a Model Family, to become a Model Citizen of their own!" This brand-spanking-new installment of the Autodale series follows the lives of the Robinson family; Autodale's perfect citizens.
I've wanted to make an animated short film based around the life-cycle of an Autodale citizen/family for a very long time. We've only ever seen Autodale through the eyes of children. All of the other short films in the series focus on skeptical children being successfully brainwashed/indoctrinated into complacency with Autodale's dystopian ways. This short film doesn't have that arc. This short film is about the parents. These characters have NO DOUBTS about how this system works anymore...
PATREON: patreon.com/davidarmsbyAutodale is BACK! | Announcement VideoDead Sound2019-12-17 | Created by David James Armsby. "Hello, citizens of Autodale! It has been a long time..."
This video is an announcement of what I've been working on for the past few months. I have three new Autodale-themed animated short films in the works. The first being an idea I've wanted to explore for a while; a look into the lives of the average Autodale citizen. The life-cycle of someone who's essentially just another cog in the machine. This short is almost completely finished. The second, a detective-noir short film. Autodale's infamous vigilante, "The Friendly Shadow" investigates a particularly gruesome incident after a monster manages to breach Autodale's walls. The third will be a continuation of "Don't Feed the Freaks". This short film is the one I'm most excited about but it's also the most subject to change. It's the only one that I don't have a finished script for yet and haven't started animating. At the moment it follows the same character, traveling farther than he ever has before, likely focussing more on the Monarchs than the Freaks this time around.
This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "White Walls". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes of the film. I'm a huge Lovecraft nerd and I approached making this short film like I would making a fan film, basing it around the aspects of Lovecraft's work that I personally find the most compelling. That being the limits of human comprehension in comparison to the universe's terrifying enormity and indifference.
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all of its contents" - H.P Lovecraft.
"Imagine a man. He lives in a place where man's entire world is a white wall. It made some happy, some were sad. Some found it funny and others got angry. The man, though, was content. All he ever wanted, all he ever sought, was here. He knew nothing more."
This short film is inspired by the works of HP. Lovecraft. It's not based on any particular story but rather based around a lot of the ideas I find compelling about his work. I find Lovecraft's stories that center around the limits of human comprehension the most interesting. This film is about our ignorance of all that is beyond us, and how catching a glimpse of the terrifying enormity of the universe can drive one to madness. We all contently live in tiny little rooms staring at blank walls compared to the universe's vastness and its indifference.
This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Scary and Strange". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes. This short film is more so a really introspective look into myself than most of my others. It's about the dangers of overly romanticising your depression and your problems and using it as a creative resource. I don't think that's a bad thing in concept, but it can be extremely unhealthy if done improperly. Hope you guys enjoy this making of. It was a weird one to make and now that it's out of the way, I've officially started working on a long-awaited project I'm sure all of you will be excited to hear about. No spoilers, though. ^_^
This animated short film is a direct sequel to my previous animated short film, Merry Madness. A terrible monster haunts a teenage girl. Every day the monster comes closer and closer but she has no intention to stop it. Even though the creature keeps her awake at night, gives her horrible nightmares and will likely tear her apart one day it has been with her for half of her life and is part of who she is.
This short film is about depression and the dangers of overly romanticising it. It's somewhat hypocritical of me to make a film with this kind of moral considering my previous work but that'll be covered more in the making-of. I've always wanted to make a surreal horror short film. I love making surrealist/dreamlike artwork and imagery and I had a lot of fun playing around with those elements in this short film. Hope you all enjoy this one! ^_^
This is a video covering my creative process when designing monsters. Specifically, this video covers my creative process designing the "Great Rat" for my "Merry Madness" animated short film. I cover my initial ideas for the character my research, reference and inspirations, my early drawings and concepts and eventually leading into a final design rendered as a full 3D clay sculpture of the monster. From there I take that finished design and create a 3D model to be rigged, textured and animated.

This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Merry Madness". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes. This is the most fun I've ever had on one of these projects. There're usually ups and downs to making these animated short films but I really can't remember a time while working on Merry Madness when I wasn't enjoying what I was doing. I got to create monsters, see real-life dinosaur fossils, climb hills, sculpt nightmares and express myself through art in a way that I really don't feel I've done in a long time. Really hope you guys enjoy this stupid little video! I sure enjoyed making it.
"This is the story of the Rat and the Hound. A tale of Great and Terrible times!" "Once upon a time, under a rock on a hill, there lived a Rat. Many would come to visit the Rat for he told stories and sang songs. He loved poetry and painting and merry madness without reason! He often sat and told his tales to men and women and monsters alike!"
This animation was a really fun project to work on. It's the most passionate I've been about a short film in forever. I did a colossal amount of drawings and paintings and even a pair of sculptures in preparation which will all be featured in the "Making-Of" video. I really delved deep into the design and art side of things with this short and I think this is my most visually appealing films to date. I really love this little world I've created and would love to explore it further! I think a quick sequel focussing on the Hound is inevitable. Really hope you guys like this short film as much as I enjoyed working on it. ^_^
This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Neon-Daddy". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes.
This short film was weird. It's both one of my favourites I've made, while simultaneously being the one I hate the most. This short took over six months to make when I really only expected it to take around two. It was a massive amount of work and it drove me insane. I hate every second of this cheesy, hilarious mess but I am extremely proud of the result! It's pretty much exactly what I wanted it to be. This short started life as a comic-book illustration task for college. I needed to design a comic-book cover for some imaginary series I was to invent. I just happened to get carried away with writing the fake backstory for said imaginary comic-book and eventually spun it into a full animated short.
In a neon-drenched nightmare city, one former Cop tries to reconcile with his estranged son. The Cop abandoned his city and abandoned his son after a tragic accident took his wife's life. As he replaced more and more of his humanity with cold steel, the city did the same. Bright rural sunshine has become dark, neon night-sky. With what little humanity he has left, the Cop must plead his son's forgiveness.
This short film is dumb. It's colourful and garish and over the top. It's inspired by action/sci-fi movies of the 80's and it's a massive change of style and pace for me. This was one of the hardest projects I've ever worked on and I really hope you guys enjoy this odd little creation of mine. I love it's weird, stupid, heart-warming and disgusting personality! ^_^
A single young Triceratops is the only one of her clutch to hatch. Her mother must lead her only child through the wonderous but dangerous Cretaceous landscape. I love dinosaurs. I've loved dinosaurs for as long as I can remember. Dinosaurs appear in nearly every single one of my animated shorts in one form or another, so I honestly think it was only a matter of time before I created a dedicated short about them! I stuck to a simple premise and a strong theme. This short is the most fun I've had animating in a while. I don't think I'll ever tire of bringing dinos to life. I'm particularly proud of the colour-palette in this short. It's striking and pulpy and I tried to tell a lot of the story through the colour-choices and colour-changes. Hope you guys enjoy this one! ^_^
This is a re-upload. My original video had sound effects from the video game, "The Isle". I have now replaced them with my own sound effects. EDIT: Apparently, a bunch of people have told me that I missed one at the end when the T.Rex yawns so I checked the file and they're right. I'm an idiot. I'm not reuploading this a third time to remove less than 2 seconds of sound though (a sound effect which is edited and mixed with another). I've tried to get Dondi's permission/attention but he doesn't seem to care. Go check out the Isle or whatever.

This was a college project. We were tasked with creating a 2D or 3D Mixed Media piece of art. I chose to do a pair of sculptures. Two Tyrannosaurus Rexes. A retro-styled depiction of 1905's Tyrannosaurus Rex in battle with a more modern-styled 2018 Tyrannosaurus Rex. These two sculptures are of the same animal, just separated by 113 years of growing knowledge. This piece is supposed to depict the contrast that over a century of pop culture and paleontological evolution can look like.
People have been asking for a how-to sculpture video for a little while now. I understand that this isn't exactly what a lot of you wanted though. A lot of people wanted me to go more in-depth, recording myself sculpting and going through the process of each stage first-hand. I might still make that video one day but instead, I documented my process in a sketchbook and this video is more so a walk-through of that sketchbook instead of a dedicated sculpture how-to.

This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Sharp Teeth". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes.
This "Making of" is a little different from my usual ones. I really like making these behind the scenes videos and I like experimenting with the format and discussion a little each time. I feel each has its own personality and I try to reflect my own personality in them. They're great come-downs and moments of self-reflection after working really hard on projects like these animations. With this one, I tried to be as honest as possible about the process of working on this short. This short in particular was extremely important to me, just in a really weird way. Also, do not worry! I am NOT going to quit animation anytime soon. This short helped me realise just how much I still enjoy animating and I'm more excited for the future I've felt in ages! ^_^
Thank you all so much for your attention and support, as someone who desperately wants to make movies that people enjoy and support, your attention means everything to me.

This is the second part of a two-part making-of series for my animated short film, "Don't Feed the Freaks". This video focusses on the Freaks and their design. The Freaks have a long history in the Autodale series and therefore a long story to tell about their design process and meaning to the themes and story of these animations. I did a lot of research and a lot of drawings while designing them and I really believed that this deserved to be a separate video. In the end, it sort of became a tutorial of sorts; what I've learned to do and not to do while designing monsters. This was just a story and a journey I wanted to share. A lot of this artwork is over two years old and looks like garbage. I find this very hard to watch! ...Hope you enjoy.
4:15-5:01 and 6:08-7:30 have been muted due to a fraudulent copyright claim on this video. Thankfully it was during segments featuring very little voice-over and can easily be skipped.
This is the making-of covering the behind the scenes of my most recent animated short, "Don't Feed the Freaks". It's the fourth in Autodale series and it was really fun to work on ...except when I hated it. I did a colossal amount of research and artwork for this short, more than I think I've ever done for a single project. So much so, that I'm going to have to split this into two videos. This is part one.
In this video, I will get into the themes, artwork, and the meaning of the story and in part two, I really want to focus on the Freaks alone. Part two will be about the Freak's design and purpose.
This is a sculpture of the "Freaks/Monsters" from my Dystopian animated series. The sculpture serves as concept art for an animated short that I just uploaded that features them quite prominently. Available here: youtube.com/watch?v=Hx5ubE6wAdI
The anatomy/musculature of the piece is entirely based on real-life animals. I went to museums and aquariums for reference and I really like the finished result. The sculpture is around 15 inches tall, 15 inches wide and 15 inches long. It's a really bulky piece. He was created using cardboard, super glue, air-drying clay, spray paints, acrylic paints, watercolour paints, pens, a sketchbook, cloth and gloss/matte finishes.
The voice at the beginning is played by Adrienne Cox and is an excerpt from my animated short "No Monsters".
"If you're reading this. If you find this book; I'm sorry but I have no answers. But I can tell you what I've seen and what I know". A young man travels the lifeless wasteland of what was once civilization. He's following the breadcrumbs of an apparent thriving society hidden somewhere in the vast, long-dead wilderness.
This short was crazy-fun to work on. It was ambitious as hell and was the cause of many sleepless nights but I really got to run with my imagination in a way I feel I haven't for a while. Just balls-to-the-wall creativity and it was really frustrating and really fun. It's also a story about isolation and I love to make those, considering around 75% of my short films are about being alone.
"Children's Toys" is the 3rd animated short in my Autodale series. At least two more are to come. It was really fun returning to this series. I forgot about how fun the imagery and cute/creepy tone are to play with. This video is behind the scenes of sorts, covering the art and themes behind the short film.
Of the 3 ideas I had, this was the least ambitious and most status-quo. This is never-the-less, a story that I wanted to tell. I tackled it first of the 3 so I could regain my footing in the world I set-up nearly a year ago. The next 2 shorts will shake up the formula.
"Imagination. So Powerful. Your children are full of it. Always having their minds drift off into the wonderous and magical expanse of their creativity. Often visualising brilliant and terrible things. Impossible things."
This film is a sequel/spin-off to two previous animations of mine, "Being Pretty" and "No Monsters". It's the first of three animated shorts I have planned set in the universe.
I honestly forgot how much I like working in this universe. The aesthetic and tone of Autodale is really fun to work with. I know that this short doesn't really expand on the lore much beyond what we've already seen but that's why it was the idea I told first out of the three. This was a smaller story about manipulation and imagination that I really wanted to tell and I hope you guys enjoy it! ^_^
I'm doing a soft rebranding of sorts with my Youtube channel, starting here.
This is my new channel trailer. I felt that my old graffiti-alleyway esthetic didn't really suit the kind of work I created anymore. This quick animated trailer is far more along the lines of the animations/artwork that I produce. Esthetically and thematically.
This video a behind-the-scenes look at my animated short film, Mother of Nature. The creative process, the artwork, inspirations and themes that crafted the story and look of the short. My creative process for this short was a little different from usual. For one, I started without a script and instead had a bullet-point list of imagery. This short organically grew from something small and simple to something bigger and better over the course of animating and editing. It was a lot of fun and a massive change of pace.
Hope you guys like this making-of. It's a little more personal than usual. ^_^
Once upon a time, a long time ago, the world was empty. There was nothing. Not a bug, or plant, or creature. All would have remained nothing if not for the Mother of Nature!
This short was originally very simple. The simple concept of the miracle and indifference of Nature. How it can be both beautiful and tragic. I initially planned this to be a short tech-demo of sorts, (maybe 1-2 minutes long) expanding what I could do within the confines of my particular animation art-style. It steadily grew into its own fully fledged short film. I've learned a lot from working on this short and I think it's one of my prettiest to date. "Mother Nature" is definitely one of my best designs, too! ^_^
This behind the scenes video will look into the the ideas behind the story, themes and art of my recent animated short film, "God's Leash". I put a lot of effort into this particular short. I worked on it for 4-5 months. The first month or so was just spent drawing random science fiction nonsense to see what would stick. This short was a bit of a nightmare to work on because of it's length, as you can imagine. I am quite proud of it, though. It encompasses nearly all of my favourite things; dinosaurs, nature, sci fi ...Well, it encompasses 3 of my favourite things! =P
Hope you all enjoy this video. I particularly enjoyed making this behind the scenes video!
Sally lives in a society that is obsessed with control. The human race controls all things natural. We've become obsessed with perverting nature and overcoming god with technology. The world is comfortable, controlled and safe, so much, in-fact, that Sally dreams of escaping it. She's become numb and longs for a life where she can earn her right to survive. Sally wants to escape to the Havens.
This short was a monumental amount of work. It's twice as long as my average short film. I was working on this thing for 4-5 months and I'm glad it's finally done. I'm very mixed on the finished result. I like the story and themes a lot but there're a handful of things I think should have been better explored, in a longer video. Or dropped all-together into a shorter video. Just feels a little awkward to me. I'll probably feel different about it in a few days, after a little break. MAKING OF: youtube.com/watch?v=A1uNf2bnEoE
Being Pretty was a massive success. It's my most-viewed and most talk-about video. Strange; I honestly thought it'd be the animation that would kill my channel. =P I always wanted to create more in the universe of Autodale. There's a lot more lore that I've mapped out for this world than I've shown in these 2 shorts. This "making of" mostly covers my creative process while working on the sequel to "Being Pretty"; named "No Monsters". I cover a lot of the same ground in this making-of. This is mostly due to the nature of sequels. I had to build upon what was already established. This short was much harder work than the original and took far longer to make. My next animation will be completely new and separate from this series. But I do think I'll probably return for a 3rd animated short eventually. I like this little world too much!
I hope you guys enjoy this follow-up to what goes into making of these short films! ^_^
