Putty Highlighter Inspired DIY Slime ♥ youtu.be/zWiz5CNl-2MThere are so many different ways to make DIY fidget spinners, so here is my version of it!! I've seen DIY fidget spinners made from skateboard bearings, paper, bottle caps, coins, magnets, toothpicks etc. There are basically two distinct parts to a DIY fidget spinner toy: 1) How to add weight to the spinners 2) How make the spinning mechanism. I wanted to come up with a solution to both that doesn't require finding objects of specific sizes/diameters or buying skate bearings. My initial idea for weighing down the fidget spinners was to use something malleable like clay, plasticine or sand. Sand/play-doh would require making a lid which seems unnecessary complicated and air-dry clay doesn't feel like an "everyday item" for most people. Then I had the idea of using rice with glue, which was a much more elegant solution since the mixture simply hardens into the lid like plastic. The central spinner part of the DIY fidget spinner took much longer to create :P! My original idea was to use a round sponge as the "bearing" and run the paper tube through it similar to the "toothpick method" that you see in other DIY fidget spinner videos. I glued the two pins to the lid and thought the tube will spin around the metal pins. This was a total fail btw. After a lot more fiddling, I removed the sponge and discovered that the pins and tube spin surprisingly well if they are not attached to the plastic part of the lid in any way. Thus a new fidget spinner was born ;D.This was my first time painting emoji faces and it was really fun! Bear in mind that many emojis are harder to draw/paint than they look because there are often lots of tiny details in the eye or mouth area. It needs a bit of experimenting with water temperature & speed but I found that it worked well about 70% of the time. The original viral video came from Kwai which is a popular video editing/sharing app from China. The clips were reposted onto Instagram and many people (including myself) were convinced they were fake. However these water bubbles really do work, but only with the UHU Original brand of glue. This is a resin-based adhesive that solidifies upon contact with water or friction. This tends to happen with face masks since the mixture also contains soap. 2) If the mixture remains liquid then add a tiny bit (1tsp) of contact lens solution and shake again. Most of the work actually involves clay, and I definitely recommend a light paper clay which won't sink into the slime. I used the one from Banggood.com and I was very impressed by the quality vs cost. It comes in a much larger container than most clays AND you don't have to use it up as quickly. The only downside is that it tends to dry quickly with a smooth "foamy" texture, so it becomes harder to sculpt details after a while. At $69 for 50ml this is a pricey product. The only comparable "luxury" peel-off glitter mask is Too Faced Glow Job mask which sells for $42. So GlamGlow is basically the most expensive PVA-containing raw ingredient that you can possibly find for slime. Just to compare, a 50ml tube of glue probably costs $3, 50ml of cheap face masks cost $6 and you can get an entire bag of pure PVA powder for $10 :P!! I was fairly certain this slime would turn out well since peel-off masks always work and the mixture is already holo and sparkly. But to make it more interesting. I decided to try replicating the texture using cheap masks. I was genuinely shocked at how similar both of these turned out to be. I expected the DIY version to be slightly more opaque and less sparkly but both seem to be identical. So I thought the best way to enjoy the aesthetics of a diamond cappuccino is to make a fake one entirely! This works best with air-dry paper clay since the surface dissolves with water and you can create a very realistic milk-foam texture.I made a miniature version using dollhouse teacups, but you can just as easily make a life size one using a normal coffee cup! You'll need more clay, but larger pieces are easier to sculpt. The finished piece would look great as a paperweight or room decor. Since the clay is packed firmly inside the cup, it may actually take weeks to dry completely. The original one was created by the account @fantasy.slimes and I tried my best to recreate the recipe. My method uses two different slimes, a regular fluffy slime for the base and an ultra fluffy one for the dome. This isn't 100% foolproof since the success of the recipe depends strongly on the amount of slime activator and the brand of shaving cream. Since each person's slime activator is different, you may need to play around a bit in order to find a recipe that works with the exact ingredients you use.The ideal top of a souffle slime should be dry, crunchy and shaped like a smooth dome. I realised that this is created in a very similar way to real souffles! Fluffy slime contains a lot of air bubbles and some of these automatically rise to the top while the slime is settling. By creating a small iceberg slime, the topmost layer dries out so the bubbles can't escape. They push upwards against the dried slime and this helps enhance the round shape. However if you leave the slime for too long, the bubbles in the remaining slime start to dissolve, creating larger pockets of air. This enables trapped air to move back down again, thus causing the souffle top to "sink". If your slime contains enough glue then it should hopefully dry completely into a dome shape. However too much glue will also cause it to flatten into a muffin shape, similar to the two pink slimes I made. This should be measured as precisely as possible using baking scales.2) The mould can be made using 2-part putty or Oyumaru. Of course, you can use any existing silicone moulds as well, such as those for DIY resin casting, DIY clay crafts, cake pops or ice cubes.3) If adding colour, use a TINY amount of powder pigment and mix this into the base resin. I know that Hitohada actually create products for industrial use (e.g. forensics & manufacturing) so it's likely that they simply rebranded some materials for the crafting / DIY market. Most craft products, especially those aimed at children have a high margin of error. Meaning that even if you eyeball the measurements or accidentally add something else, it doesn't make a difference to the outcome.However in this case, getting a measurement wrong by a few grams can make the difference between having a perfect squishy and a completely failed one. This is even more noticeable in my clear squishy DIY. So as mentioned, it's best to treat this project as a very special "luxury" crafting experience. If you just want squishies then it's cheaper to buy them. But if you want to try a totally new and unique type of DIY, then give this a try. To make it more interesting, we decided to test all the popular slime recipes using different ingredients. Each slime produced surprising results! The best one was definitely DIY face-mask/no-glue slime which dilutes very well in water and turns into wonderfully fluffy, jelly-like texture. If you want to make DIY blender at home, then this is the recipe I recommend. Butter slime and glue slime both ended up slight fails as the slime became too thick and nearly clogged up the blender. It's best not to try these yourself since you might just end up damaging the blender and the final result isn't amazing. Remarkably, it creates a new texture that's glossy and fluffy at the same time. Playing with this slime mimics the process of beating eggs so it actually increases the volume and becomes fluffier. I find that the egg holds air bubbles even better than shaving foam. Regular fluffy slime tends to "deflate" after a while but this one actually stays soft & stretchy for much longer...possibly because you're constantly adding more air bubbles to the mixture as you play with it. The slime itself didn't smell at all, though I used clear slime made with PVA powder which is also fragrance-free. If you use clear slime made with glue or face masks then it will most likely smell like that. However the slime does leave residue on the table, bowl etc and you can notice an eggy smell the next day. So make sure to clean all surfaces very well, and wash you hands well. DID YOU KNOW? Salmonella is actually extremely rare/non-existent (0.01%) in supermarket eggs sold in developed countries. 99.9% of raw eggs DO NOT contain salmonella. Even if the egg is contaminated, you can only get ill by ingesting a large amount of it, which is basically impossible in this case. Another YouTuber tried it first and it worked but the dissolving process took a long time. After doing some research, it turns out the best way to dissolve PVA is to place it in cold water, and slowly heat it up to near-boiling point whilst stirring all the time. That sounded like a bit too much hassle so I tried just doing it with cold water and it worked. Though you have to mix with your hands since you need to rub any lumps of PVA until they dissolve. And definitely wear gloves because it can take up to 30mins and PVA is quite drying to skin. PLEASE NOTE: The slime looks cloudy in the clips where I'm pulling it out of the box because I spent too long taking thumbnail photos and got a huge bunch of bubbles into the top layer ^_^". It's a lot harder making DIY jumbo slimes in Europe since they simply don't sell large enough containers of glue or baking soda! The largest bottle of white glue I found was 1L (don't get me started on clear glue :P). Borax is much cheaper to use as activator when making big slimes but that's not available here at all. So after a bunch of experimenting, we came up with this giant slime DIY using the contact lens method. Another problem with giant slime tutorials is that there are rarely exact recipes online, since most videos are for entertainment and people simply make their jumbo slimes by eye. The recipe in this video is enough for 2L of slime and a fairly good starting point for large slimes! You can scale the quantities up or make them in different colours like we did. It's also not overly expensive to make, about $30 per slime using the exact ingredients we used. Turns out it produces a spongy, fluffy slime with small air bubbles that actually trap and extract water! If you add more slime then you end up with a regular DIY butter slime, and if you add more clay then you get a more solid, rubbery mass. This was a fun slime experiment but this slime isn't that suitable for selling since the materials are expensive. However the unique texture would make good content for Instagram slime accounts since I haven't seen anything similar to it before!Morph is a new type of clay that's like a combination of paper clay and kinetic sand. The thing to remember is that soap reacts with fat so this bubble solution works best immediately after you make it. If you leave it overnight or for a few days then it will make fewer bubbles. This is a really fun method for making 3-dimensional objects and works for anything that has a smooth surface. The important thing is to tape in small areas so you can pull the pieces off easily. Trying to tape too much at once will cause the whole section to stick or warp. This isn't the fastest DIY since one shoe takes about 1-2 hours to complete. However you don't need to be fully concentrated so it's a fun way to keep your hand occupied when watching Netflix or YouTube.
