No postdoc filler to figure out what I wanted to do. I quit cold-turkey. I wanted to share my top 3 reasons why I made the decision to leave.
3. Quality of Life - Late nights, low pay, the the near-constant brain churning of new ideas. It certainly wasn't a 9-5, and no matter how many hours were clocked, nobody is paying overtime.
2. Over competition - when the system is pyramid shaped, a pick-axe is an efficient tool for climbing.
1. Lack of stability - A two year contract here and a two year contract there. Everyone was in a state of international flux. Away from family, friends and support structures. There should be a life-time limit for leaving do's. It's not fun or fair to see excellent people constantly jumping off sinking ships when grant funding ends.
I didn't want to play the game of publish or perish. So I packed my bags. It was a blast while it lasted. There are a-thousand and one thing's I'd change about the system if I was given the chance. But for now I take my 3 letters, and I sleep in on the weekends.
00:00 Hi 00:35 working through the grieving process 01:30 I completed my Viva exam 01:56 reason 3 - the quality of life sucked 05:56 reason 2 - it was a rabbit hole into a pyramid scheme 13:32 reason numero uno - the instability of living on 2-year contracts sounded wild 19:12 playing mind games, re-imagining the system 21:44 update - I got a permanent job, I have windows, and get to go outside and touch the grass 22:33 career options - not all need to include bouncing from postdoc to postdoc, if you don't want to

It's been 18 months of since I got all finished up and this is the update of everything that has happened since.
First up was the fixed retainer. Undoubtably the biggest change. A strange feeling to get a wire glued to the back of my teeth, but we're all friends now.
My biggest ongoing concern is if I should buy a new set of retainers. They're a little loved. Worn down, small cracks and a hole. But currently still tiding me over. I hadn't factored in ongoing retainer costs to the lifetime expense of fixing my teeth. £100 each. Hopefully they last more than a year (they should do) but I'm a biter and I guess the extended use (12h shifts not just the 'asleep' time for the beginning) probably meant I wore down the first set longer than the future sets will. Anyways, something I'm keeping an eye on.
Beam Orthodontics in Dundee gets my commendations. Pretty sure Rhu has a black belt in invisalign. Or a diamond apex certificate. Whatever they call it. The team know what's what.
If I have one piece of advice (from my lived experience and scouring reddit for 3 years) PLEASE do choose your teeth-moving provider carefully and make sure you check their credentials. Experience goes a long way.
Leafy greens no longer haunt me. I'm just out here living my life. Eating what I want, when I want it. And never feeling the need to soft smile again.

Fortunately all of the items are a success and I'm keeping it all to be worn this winter. What started things off was the autumn realisation that I really needed a mid-warmth jacket. My rain coats weren't toasty enough, and my duvet jackets were too large for +0'C days. And so I started to look in the best place I know... The internet. Without much convincing I went across to Thrift+, and wandered on into their 50% off sale.
I went right into the Barbour section (I had recently parted ways with a quilted jacket and thought Barbour could have some similars). Got these 2 beauties for cheap. One £12 Barbour jacket. One £45 Barbour Jacket. I'd say that's a win in itself. And mission complete. But I got suckered into the scroll.
I also picked up a tartan shirt, some pink troos, a knitted jumper and a £2 Ralph Lauren top. I have no real idea if the Ralph Lauren T-shirt is genuine. It feels good quality and has washed well. And so I no longer care either way. Happy thrifting.

#thrift #thrifthaul #secondhand #clothingEvery book I read last year (and data analysis) 📚Emma Sandy2024-02-25 | All of the books that I read last year... collated into a delightful spreadsheet and analysed to my heart's content! Here is the list of books that I read in 2023, a year of 'audio book shuffle' reads from the library. Low risk/high reward strategy that meant I read 35 books, quite a hearty number for me. Scoring all of the books 0 to 5 stars, and listing them in order for easy pickings for sharing the best books I've read!
Top books were: Remarkably Bright Creatures - (I dare you to not read the blurb and just jump in for a blind read) Strip - (immersive characters to sympathise with, worlds away, took me worlds away) The Name of The Wind - (my ultimate comfort read, possibly my religion) Demon Copperhead - (I normally audiobook FAST, at 1.25x speed, but this book I read as slow as possible, hoping it wouldn't end)
Also I've got to own up to having several (7 to be exact) ZERO scorers. This meant that they were 'did not finish' books (DNF's). No reflection on how bad the books were.
Reading goals for my future reading include reading more books with older main characters (got to love a retirement storyline) and to cull some of the 'low' scorers into the DNF pile and create a larger gap in the histogram!

Whether you're fancing a Scottish Seaside holiday, or you just fancy a nosey, it's my pleasure to show you around this wee coastal gem.
Stonehaven is a town on the East coast of Scotland, just 2 hours north of Edinburgh. It's well connected by bus, train and car and it's surrounded by bounds of countryside, forest and coast. In the curved bay, sits the town of Stonehaven, with Cowie village to the North and the Harbour and Dunnottar Castle to the South. There's bundles to do for tourists (kids, adults, outdoorsy folk and foodies alike).
I start this video at the Golf Course, on the North side of town. The Golf Course is close by the train tracks (but not the train station, I'll point that out later) with a perfect view spanning over the town and all the way to Dunnottar Castle and the War Memorial Monument. We head down the coast road towards the 'Fun side of town' (the leisure centre, skate park, swimming pools, tennis courts, bowls, quoiting, putting) at the Elizabeth Park. Passing the Caravan Club Site Park, we head briefly over to Cowie Village, the best place for rockpooling and fossil hunting.
Heading over to the beach front, we meet the famous Aunty Betty's Ice cream. P.s. ask for the sauce on the bottom and all the toppings. It tastes better that way! Next we walk up the Cowie river to walk towards Baird Park and then the Burns Memorial Gardens. The gardens (although they look like someones private front garden) are public. Extra points if you can spot the chimney. The gardens used to be a brewery and the back walls still stand. The gardens are built above the cellars, so don't dig too far down! Heading the scenic route to the town square, we pass back over Cowie Bridge (and the site of the salmon netting station). Plenty of fishing in the Cowie (or so I've heard).
As we walk to the Stonehaven Town Square, it's Feein' Market Day (the first Saturday in June every year). We walk around the square, nip up the Carron River, and along the Promenade to the Harbour. After a jump down into the sand, pointing out the Tolbooth Museum and Seafood Restaurant, we wander towards the old High Street. The site of the World Famouse Fireballs Festival at Hogmanay (that's New Year's Eve, 31st December). The local volunteers (with the Fireballs Association) make home-made fireballs. They light them on fire and swing them around their heads while marching up and down the High Street. Around 10,000 people come to watch. It's FREE but get there in plenty time as numbers are capped.
Heading up to Dunnottar Castle (by Car) we briefly stop at a beautiful view point halfway up the Bervie Braes (that's on the cliffs looking over the Harbour). The War Memorial is on the way to the Castle and in 2023 it was re-dedicated to the town, with 100 pipers and drummers marching from town up to the Monument. Dunnottar Castle is our final stop, with breathtaking views of the cliff-top ruin-castle, it's my favourite place, and most recommended attraction in town. If you only do one thing on your trip to Stonehaven, make it Dunnottar Castle.

I need refinements. Here's how the process of getting refinements went.
My bite (my biggest concern going into this) continued to be rather terrible. The "it hurts in the roots of my teeth to chew on this side" kind of terrible. And despite my best efforts and continued optimism till the last 7 days... I messaged my ortho and sheepishly told him that things weren't right. He agreed. And I was sent on my way to wait for refinements. "I'll take good care of my trays" were my last words... and alas. The tray Gods heard me and immediately decided to cause a hairline crack. Now it didn't look like much, I will admit, but I knew it wouldn't tide me over for another 4 weeks. I snack a lot. And so I plodded back to the ortho's office. Where I was punished with one of the jelly moulds *ew*, to make a 'hold' retainer. It was fun to see the difference between retainers and invisalign. The take-home here was that invisalign is dainty and discrete.
Then refinements day arrived. I was curious if the stained attachments would cause permanent staining on my tooth. (as it was super high up the list of disclaimers I had to sign away in the beginning that invisalign MIGHT CAUSE PERMANENT STAINING. cool. cool). BUT NO, the o̶r̶t̶h̶o̶s̶ magicians assistant polished my teeth up beautifully. It was a good day.
Getting the refinement attachments on was easier than the first time. Now I had a slightly better idea of what was going on. My description may not be technically accurate, language may vary as I have no idea what I'm talking about. But I try my best. First step tastes like chemical acid. Then they put the attachment liquid into the dots of a tray. Then, a-la nail salon, UV curing works it's magic. The guide tray being snapped off sounds a little alarming but don't fret, my teeth all stayed put.
100 days of refinements had flown by, and I was on tray 10, the final refinement tray. [the audio on this clip is A LITTLE POOR, because I wanted to try filming on my NEW PHONE, so OOPS there are SUBITILES AVAILABLE]. The ortho had mentioned shaping my teeth a little to make them prettier. I wasn't wild about the idea but was open to persuasion. My front teeth on the bottom are worn down a little flat, and could see the aesthetic potential. Teeth shaping is a thing that can happen, but my ortho never mentioned it again. I was delighted by the end-point of my treatment. Exactly on schedule for the original timing plan. Then I sprinkled in some before & after invisalign shots! Yippee!
00:00 I got refinements 00:29 I thought it was over but it's not 03:53 Cracks in aligner 04:56 A new retainer to bide the time 07:52 Refinement day 09:30 So... I got refinements... 19:52 I'm 100 days into refinements 25:09 Before & after montage

Here's how it's been going. My bite continued to not cooperate. I had a surprise painful tray. A beautiful sampling of Invisalign ASMR to be had. My IPR finally began to show results as the crowding is noticeably calmed down. One issue I'd like improved is the alignment of my top and bottom centre lines. I'm not sure if it's possibly. But a girl can dream. I noticed gum gaps- where my trays stopped being anywhere near my gums. The dentist calmed my stresses. Apparently, I have gums of steel. No biggie. However, I do have stained nasty attachments. So I guess you can't win all the battles. I HOPE the stains are only on the attachments and not permanently on my teeth... My before and after roll is at the end. I'm a few trays out from the end and Ortho say's I'm not needing refinements if all goes to plan. My bite is still a work in progress. So. With that. Wish me luck- (We're so close!).

#Invisalign #InvisalignUK #InvisalignJourney #InvisalignSmile #InvisalignJourneyA Try On Haul | Thrifted + Casual ClothingEmma Sandy2022-02-20 | I've been living in comfortable casual clothes for YEARS. And my wardrobe needs a refresh. I love shopping sustainably, shopping second hand, being thrifty.
Searching for treasure among the tatters is a mission. I took this mission seriously. I was on the hunt for: Daily jumpers Casual T-shirts Comfy Jeans
I've shopped second-hand online/thrift+ clothing before. And my hit-rate was 50%. So. I decided to go big. I was hoping quantity would compensate for any lapse in quality. I scoured the site for 3 days. Adding and adding to the basket (my favourite bit). And in the end the total was 10-items, and the damage was £148. The packages arrived after 2 sleep. And bingo. It was time for a try on. Let's go!
#thriftwithme #thrifting #Haul #ThriftHaul #TryOnGetting Slenderizing IPR for Invisalign | Pain, Sensitivity & Bleeding GumsEmma Sandy2022-01-13 | I got IPR slenderising as part of my Invisalign treatment plan. Here's how I managed at my third session!
Right at the beginning I saw my Invisalign plan, and I knew exactly when the IPR was coming. I decided to get IPR instead of getting teeth pulled (which was the other option).
For the third IPR treatment, I arrived in a really positive mind space. I was reclined back in the chair as the tools were set-up beside me. We were ready to roll! The IPR tool is loud... I'll be honest, it sounds like a dentist drill to my untrained ears. The sound didn't bother me, but the VIBRATION was intense. A numbing, buttery vibration inside my skull. Not pleasant, but not unbearable. The best bit? It was over within a few minutes. I'd guess 1-minute per gap. Easy peasy. There was a vacuum straw to suck away any debris. A slight taste and smell reminiscent of... nail file (?)... a little gritty, but I swirled with water and the taste was away. My tongue felt the new gaps, there was a slight 'edge' to feel, but nothing too noticeable. They felt slightly less rounded. The gaps were closed by the very next tray!
Pain? Sensitivity? So, during THIS round of IPR I felt no pain. However, the first two IRP sessions (at the side) I did feel sharp nicks. I winced. The ortho backed off. And there was no lasting pain what so ever.
Sensitivity.. Well. I don't have sensitive teeth. I don't have hot or cold sensitive teeth. I can bite ice cream. So I didn't feel any sensitivity. But maybe that's not too surprising.
So, I'll be honest. I was too nervous and stressed to film my first two IPR sessions. I was cold-sweating in the waiting room. But after a pep-talk from the lovely nurse, I had steadied my breathing enough and we were ready to begin. My teeth were INCREDIBLY cramped... hard-to-get-the-floss-in level cramped. So they started off with ribbon-strips to make a little room. Then moved onto the mechanical IPR-bit (that looks like a flossing-bow with a metal file in it). The IPR was over before I knew it. That was the best bit. I was sat up, swirled and I did taste blood (the two sessions, maybe best I didn't film those!). But the bleeding stopped right away, and there was no blood in my trays at all. They'd only been nicked (which did hurt for a little second, I winced and the ortho knew).
I'm really happy with how my smile is coming along. The gaps come and go as the trays change. Stick around to see more of my Invisalign journey!
Thanks to Rhu McKelvey, my orthodontist and all the staff at Beam Orthodontics in Dundee. A big thank you for calming my initial IPR nerves, and letting me film!

#Invisalign #InvisalignUK #InvisalignJourney #InvisalignSmile #InvisalignJourney3D Snowflake Easy Paper Tree Topper | Vlogmas Christmas Craft With MeEmma Sandy2021-12-24 | This 15-minute craft requires 2 paper sheets, scissors and tape (or glue or staples). First make 8 identical squares. For each square, fold in half (corner side to corner side), then again to make a quarter folded triangle. Take the scissors to the folded edge, line the scissor blade up with the longest edge, and cut two parallel slits (evenly spaced) along the paper. Don't cut all the way through. Leaving a seam allowance the same width as the slits. Once you've cut all eight of the squares, you're ready to tape. Open out, and curl the layers back on themselves then secure. Alternate the three layers (three layers come from two cuts) so one folds inwards, one backwards, and one inwards, securing them all separately by tape.
To scale this craft up, use larger squares (example, make each sheet of paper into one square). To scale this craft down, just use smaller squares!
To make a more intricate design, make four of the snowflakes with three cuts, and then alternate them throughout the standard segments.
To keep the craft super neat, measure the cuts to make them evenly spread, and secure all the segments facing the same direction.

#Cat #Cats #calicocat #petsInvisalign Progress Update | Gum Recession, Gap Teeth, Black Triangles & DelaysEmma Sandy2021-10-16 | I'm half way through my invisalign treatment. This is my invisalign update for trays 8 to 15 and the highs and lows of it all. With progress pics, of course. For anyone who is considering invisalign, or adult braces, this video is for you.
I got settled into the invisalign lifestyle pretty easily. Adapting to the new trays within a few days. The first real high came at tray 9. I could see true progress. For the first time, I became proud of my smile.
Then, the at the next dental monitoring scan, my progress was stalled. The trays weren't fitting and I was delayed for 5 days. And then another 5 days. I was somewhat perturbed by the situation.
I needed IPR to straighten up my triangular teeth, and remove the black triangles. I didn't appreciate it at the time, but I think trays 9 to 11 fit poorly due to my overcrowded teeth, and the IPR was exactly what nudged me over the please-just-fit hurdle. Regardless, I jumped back on the bandwagon and she was full steam ahead. Everything went swimmingly for quite some time. And then I met my match with a ham sandwich. My bite had stopped working. I was unable to bite pizza without a little help from a knife.
Progress pictures are at the end of the video. Gratifying. Motivating. 15 trays down. 14 to go.

Full shoulder coverage, high neckline, knee length and comfortable in the heat. This style excuses me from the suncream/long hair/bag shoulder strap pantomime. My summer kryptonite. There was NOTHING in this style online. Then... I remembered about the large rolls of material in my wannabe hobbies cupboard. I grabbed the largest roll, a light blue geo-camo straight cotton. It was perfect. The only obstacle I faced was my own inexperience. But with faced with so much extra fabric (room to cut, re-cut and then re-cut again)... and charged with misplaced confidence, I decided I had nothing to lose. (p.s. Full disclosure: I did have an upcoming exam when I started this dress. This did add fuel to my sudden dress-making passion. And yes I was a procrastination project. Initially. And yes my exam went well thank you for asking.)
Step 1- Roll out the fabric on the floor. Pin and pull the dress to see the shape. Then cut anywhere you fancy. Step 2- Pencil in the seams. Sew straight. You fool. Why didn't you use a pattern. Step 3- Press seams and hemming. Despite having no experience at hemming arms. Just go slow. It'll be fine. Step 4- Watch a tutorial on how to make this dress. Regret everything. If you're asked about having a skill, tell a story, don't just make a statement. No matter how trustworthy you sound replying "yes I have good time management skills" in an interview... It's more compelling to communicate with an example. In this super quick video, I give two short examples of stories used to illustrate skills that I have. Stories can be used for demonstrating transferable skills (time management, working under pressure, communication skills, presentation skills) or specific skills (using that modelling software, cash handling, driving a forklift). Any skill the interview calls for, say it with a story.
A few years back I had a wonderful meeting with a careers advice service. They seeded this little nugget in my mind, to tell a story using the STAR method (situation, task, action, result). Here's the first example I used in the video: Situation (when I was an undergrad working in a research lab) Task (I had to organise my experiments around my classes) Action (I made a planner and kept it organised) Result (I passed both classes and labs)
This technique is good, I find it most beneficial to plan three or four scenarios before hand, and then adapt them to the specific question that is being asked. My brain doesn't facilitate working through an acronym while I'm mid-interview. So this is my solution! An easy bit of last minute interview preparation. Hope you can use this method to any interview, be that a job interview, a college interview, a university interview. In person, a phone interview, a virtual skype or zoom interview. Heck, even a first date! Interview preparation will take a few minutes, write down your stories or phone a friend to chat them through. This interview hack is ideal for any interview where you're asked about a skill, or why you would suit the role. No experience required if you can show your transferable skills and show you're a great fit for the job! You don't need to say "yes" sincerely, you need to show "yes" with your story. You've got this. Good luck!
#InterviewHacks #Interview #InterviewTips #InterviewAdvice #InterviewQuestions #InterviewAnswersI had the Pfizer COVID vaccine | My vaccination reschedule (NHS Scotland) and side effectsEmma Sandy2021-06-20 | My time has come, and I got the COVID vaccine (NHS Scotland). My vaccine appointment came by text, I looked to reschedule and found an appointment within 24 hours! I snapped it up, and vlogged heading out to the vaccination centre, the day that followed and share my vaccine side effects.
If you're looking to reschedule your COVID vaccine and you live in Scotland, use your username to create an online account and then ALL available vaccine appointments (even the earlier ones) will become visible to you. I saw two locations that had multiple next-day appointments, and then most other locations had slots the next weekend. So look around, I think I was very lucky to get a next-day slot, and I did need to drive, but they do exist!
#Vaccine #vaccinesideeffects #vaccinationdoneWhy you Shouldnt go to Dundee UniversityEmma Sandy2021-05-20 | Dundee University will be a terrible choice for you IF you are looking for something that the City can't give to you. If you want a huge hustle-bustle city... if you want a long commute... if you want miles of shopping... or if you want to jet off for international trips every fortnight... then Dundee honestly might not be a great fit for you.
There are a bunch of reasons why I love Dundee Uni. But there are also a bunch of reasons why you might not want to come to Dundee.
#UniversityofDundeeTips for wearing Invisalign (6-months in) | How to Avoid Staining, Pain Free & get the Perfect FitEmma Sandy2021-04-28 | Stained trays? Sore gums? Nowhere to brush your teeth?
Six months into invisalign, and I've got some tips and tricks to share!
I have multiple toothbrushes. I have a wee tooth brush station set up nearby. Containing brush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash, it's MUCH easier to get my teeth clean and trays back in quickly. Less faffing and hunting for things.
Trays getting stained even although you brushed your teeth? I drink bright purple blackcurrant juice, and, no matter how perfectly I brush my teeth, my tongue retains the dye. SO. I say brush your tongue. I guess coffee and tea stain would be harder to see on the back of your tongue. But I really do think that's the clincher. Treat yourself to a tongue scraper.
Yep. Sorry to be the one to break it to you. Floss after every meal. Trays can get a little tight and push in the wrong direction if there's food all up in places there shouldn't be.
Have a chewie chew before bed. Sleeping is a huge chunk of time in a day. Make sure your trays are settled in before sleeping.
Don't wear lipstick.
That's all for now! Subscribe to see more of my invisalign journey.

#Invisalign #InvisalignUK #InvisalignJourney #InvisalignSmile #InvisalignJourneyGetting fitted with Invisalign | Fitting appointment (Tray 1) & Surviving the Breaking-in PeriodEmma Sandy2021-02-26 | I got invisalign! This is my invisalign fitting appointment and how I coped with the 'breaking-in' period. For anyone who is considering invisalign, or adult braces, this video is for you.
I got my tray 1 fitted in the first appointment. I bounded home with my invisalign goody bag in hand and I had very little pain on my first tray. Eating foods was fine, but my first night sleep was a little disturbed. I jolted awake, acutely aware of the plastic in my mouth.
I kept in touch with the ortho via the dental monitoring scans. Changing trays & sending scans every fortnight. Life was nice and simple for 2 trays. Then, it was attachment time. Ouch. It was pretty terrible for a couple of days. Imagine harling... from the outside of buildings... sharp. But on the inside of my mouth. My gums were not impressed. But the sand-papery attachments soon smoothed themselves out. And my gums toughened up. Bonjela and ortho wax saved me in the mean time.
Tray 5 and we had our first miracle. Experienced through the medium of flossing. It was wonderful. And now... a handful of trays in, I hardly notice them at all! It's been pretty plain sailing recently.

This video was inspired by Mayim Bialik. I saw her "describing my day without the letter "S" challenge. It brought me joy and laughs. I watched it twice, straight through and I think I'm getting abs. So I decided to have a little fun and have a go myself. This took me AGES and I had to cut out (sometimes minutes of) thinking time. But I had a blast. Hope you enjoy!

This is how I fold a shirt in 3 seconds. I pinch it by the neck hole, use my middle finger to swish the arms back, then lay it in half. I've been practicing this technique for years now. I can fold a shirt in seconds, even straight from the dryer. Not to brag. But it's arguably my most important time-saving skill. Clothes folding can be a soul-sucking chore. So I try to fold clothes quickly and here is my best shirt folding hack. Give it the middle finger.
There are many shirt folding techniques on the internet. I think my shirt folding hack is quick and versatile. Long sleeve shirt? Short sleeve shirt? Dress shirt? Fleece? Puffer jacket? Hawaiian shirt? Fold them all in this way. You don't need a table or to prepare them out neatly before hand (like that mind boggling nip&flip hack Ive seen... has anyone else seen that? does anyone really use that? It looks like it needs 'lay this out flat' prep time that I don't enjoy). So no prep time. This works straight from the clothes dryer. Or from the pile of clothes on the floor. Whatever works for you. We got this. The Best Study Routine for Exam Preparation & Revision Motivation | Study Tips (Part 2)Emma Sandy2020-11-22 | Exam season is upon us. So here is my exam note preparation routine! It's a three step process. How to study for exams:
1. Read the notes I made during term time 2. Write condensed notes on paper (draw every concept) 3. Teach the content until I sound coherent
And I KNOW that starting exam preparation is so hard when you can't find the motivation to do anything other than clean, watch YouTube videos ;) or scroll the internet. BUT I have a study hack for ya. Set a 10 minute timer. Trick yourself into the low hanging fruit. That'd get me started and into revision mode. And once I was in the zone it was never too bad, and much easier to continue.
Exam days are truly horrible. I found positive affirmations worked for me. I've been telling myself it's gonna be great for years before I even heard about positive affirmations. But they do the trick!
I hope you have a wonderful focused and fruitful exam season. Now's the time to put your phone into another room (after you like the video and subscribe, obviously). It's gonna be great!!
The key to passing exams is knowing the content well enough to TEACH it back at the examiner. It's not enough to simply recognise the things you're reading/ be familiar with your beautiful note sheets :)
#ExamTips #TakingNotes #Exam #ExamTime #Revision #RevisionChecklist #RevisionSeries #RevisionClassHow To Take Notes & Organise Yourself Into Academic Success | Study Tips (Part 1)Emma Sandy2020-10-30 | In first year, I'd prepare by closing the door, picking the perfect study playlist, and sitting down at my desk, looking up at my picture-collage wall. I was so excited to start studying..... And I had NO IDEA where to start.
NOW I have a fine tuned lecture note-taking protocol. It all starts with the preparation. I have a quick peek at my lecture powerpoint before the show hits the road (if all the stars aligned and my lecturer uploaded the content in advance- not always a given).
As I'm sitting down for the class to begin. I deploy the ol' split-screen. This is where the pace picks up. I've the powerpoint on the left of my screen. And my OneNote document open on the right hand side. Just beside by laptop sits my trusty phone. Full of battery and free from clutter so it's ready to voice record the whole thing. As the lecturer begins their talk-a-talking. I begin my type-a-typing. All of it. As fast as I can. My fingers are going faster than that 5 minute panic session before I leave to go and see my piano teacher after not practicing all week. And I'm typing down every damned word I can manage. I don't look up. Typos and all, I charge the cursor forward. Every unknown word is spelt phonetically. There is no time for googling. There is only time for typing.
Breathe.
As the lecture ends, I re-name my voice recording. Every time. Or it falls into the void and is never listened to again. Then, in the coming week (?) I will go through and tidy up this lecture transcript. I add the pictures in at the right location. I search up how to spell "perturbed spindle". I search up the little 'presumed-knowledge' delicacies that the lecturer sprinkled in.
P.S. I've graduated. I got top marks. I figured out what worked for me along the way. And I'm ready to share all the little details with you. So grab a pink drink. And let's talk uni.
#studymusic #study #studywithme #lecture #lecturenotes #university #onenote #notetaking #unilectures24 hours without my PhoneEmma Sandy2020-10-03 | Last week I was brushing my teeth, minding my own business. Watching YouTube videos at the sink. As you do. My boyfriend looked me up and down and laughed, calling me ridiculous. I shrugged and looked back down at my phone.
Yesterday, on the other side of town, tired after a long day, we were headed home. We decided to pickup food on our way. Then it hit me. The all-consuming panic of a phone blinking to low battery. Damn. Plans ruined. Straight home it must be.
I couldn't IMAGINE spending 1 hour waiting on take-away food without my phone. So I scrapped plans. That was it. Straight home.
I breathed in a sigh, to begin telling my boyfriend that food was cancelled. But then I froze...
And then it hit me... I am RIDICULOUS. Cancelling food because I couldn't scroll my phone?!
Wow. I'm pathetic and... when did I become so addicted to my phone!?
So here we are. We're staging an intervention. No phone for 24 hours. The deep end of the (temporary) social dilemma challenge. Just to prove to myself that I can, right? Cleanse my soul of social media. Like a spa day. But during a pandemic. And with a bunch of chores to do. So jump on board and come with me as I potter about today. Preparing to present in a lab meeting, a cycling trip, some foraging and plucking a task from the depths of my "it can wait" to-do list. It was a very productive day. For me. But probably boring to watch. Unless berry picking makes you as happy as it makes me.
If you're having dreams of phone-detox, may this be the inspiration you need! In a world where we don't give our brains 2 minutes to ponder as we brush our teeth, we can't wait without scrolling, and we haven't read the ingredients on the back of the bottles in the bathroom since our childhood. It's time. For a phone cleanse.
Power to the phoneless people, I feel the pull of the social dilemma.
#challenge #phone #adayinmylife #phonefree #foraging #thesocialdilemma #TheGreatRealisationThe Unofficial Campus Orientation | University of Dundee Walking TourEmma Sandy2020-08-29 | Join me for a wee wander round Dundee University campus & lets get orientated! Whether you're moving to Dundee soon, or you just fancy a nosey, it's my pleasure to show you the sights.
Dundee is a city on the East coast of Scotland, just an hour north of Edinburgh. It's well connected, but the city itself is very walkable and car friendly if you're wanting to bring your car to uni (i'll point out parking spots later on in the video). In the city of Dundee, there are two universities. University of Dundee (most famous for life sciences) and Abertay (most famous for video games).
I start this video down at the train station at the waterfront. The V&A design museum and the Discovery Antarctic expedition boat and then we head up towards campus. To set your bearings, the river Tay sits to the south, and the Law hill sits to the north. If you're ever lost on campus, first of all, use google maps or ask a friendly stranger, but failing that, north is usually uphill, and south is usually downhill. Easy peasy.
The Dundee Uni campus itself isn't too big. Maximum 10 minute walk between classes. I've added wee annotated google maps into the video to help you out. But you should be able to spot the campus on a map easy enough because its encircled by main roads. Perth Road, the high street, straight along the bottom; and Hawkhill, the dual-carriageway, curving round the north side. And yes, Hawkhill is a wee hill too. North side = uphill remember.
We walk round in a wee figure of eight, pointing out everywhere you'll need to know: Intro 00:00 Train station 1:04 Waterfront 2:15 Shopping center 4:46 Onto Campus 6:25 Matriculation 6:45 Law School 7:30 Dental School 7:46 Life Sciences 8:05 Uni Health Services 9:38 Chatting to strangers 9:55 Health care in Scotland 11:18 Library 12:04 Free Shop 12:21 The Green 13:09 DUSA the Union 13:53 Banking 16:08 Belmont accommodation 16:34 Belmont Tower 17:40 ISE Campus Gym 18:45 Heathfield accommodation 20:17 Dalhousie 22:35 Grocery delivery 24:25 Lidl 25:04 Parker house 26:23 The Hub private accommodation 27:15 Avertical climbing wall 29:03 Senior/postgrad housing 29:32 Taxis 29:52 Worst place 30:39 Civil engineering 31:37 Free uni streaming 32:45 Job at uni 34:00 View of Tay River 34:47 Geddes quadrangle 35:50 The Lemmings 37:48 Seabraes accommodation 39:34 DJCAD Art School 42:25 Where students live 43:25 Community Fridge 43:40 Private rent cost 44:54 Renting must-haves 46:11 Westpark accommodation 46:56
I can only imagine the uncertainty and extra anxiety that coronavirus is causing to everyone moving to uni this year. It's not what you imagined, it's not what you signed up for, but hopefully you will have a wonderful undergrad or postgrad experience. I know nightclubs are closed, and house parties (over 15 people, max 3 households) are literally illegal right now (August 2020). So freshers week will not be as normal. Far from it. I could just give a hug to everyone who's not able to experience what they imagined (for now anyway). But there will be friends to make, and fun to have. Quarantine with flatmates might be the most thorough "get to know me session" one could imagine.
If anyone IS QUARANTINING, I've added some info that you may find useful. Groceries can be ordered to your door from groceries.ASDA.com. Choose a time slot (book early & you can amend your order until 10pm the day before). Also, the uni has a free streaming service learningonscreen.ac.uk/ondemand so you can watch everything that's ever played on UK TV. Worth a nosey for sure (quarantine or not).
If anyone is looking for COVID advice, the Scottish Government do a daily update at 12.15 (Monday-Friday) live on twitter.com/scotgov, or on the telly. Or you can have a look into the stats/guidance at gov.scot. A summary of the rules in Scotland right now (Aug 2020): FACTS F- face coverings in busses/shops/indoors enclosed spaces are mandatory A- Avoid crowded places... like the plague C- clean your hands & hard surfaces regularly T- Two meters distance from folk you don't live with S- book a test if you have ANY symptoms (new continuous cough, fever, loss of or change in taste/smell)
There are multiple events that run yearly at UoD, like the zombie apocalypse charity day, Holi festival of colours, re-freshers week in January, Halloween, St Patricks day 17th March, the carpark rave (November ish?). Every so often the uni has alpaca petting days (summer time), guide dog petting days (exam time), bouncy castle assault courses /sumo wrestling, outdoor movie screenings. Student life is pretty sweet sometimes.
Anyway, enough of my rambling. Nobody reads the video description anyway. I truly hope you love student life in Dundee as much as I have. Safe travels here. Bring ear plugs, tupperware, a door wedge and bring your mask. Don't feed the seagulls. *inhale*. *exhale*. You got this.
#UniversityofDundee #University #Dundee #DundeeUniversity #ScottishUniversity #Freshers #Freshers2020Advice to my younger self, starting universityEmma Sandy2020-08-19 | You've gotta learn how to take criticism, you gotta learn how to give criticism constructively. Uni is one giant learning curve. Today, I wanted to share some advice I would give to myself for starting uni. Six years ago I moved out and began living with flatmates, making new friends, in a space where nobody knew me. I thought everyone at uni had their life sorted, but honestly, feeling like you don't know what you're doing and, sometimes, not even KNOWING what you want is all to common.
Here are some of the best pieces of advice I could give to my younger self for making the most of uni. Make your friends wisely, remember to call your family, and it's okay to have different priorities than your friends.
Take care of your health, and trust your gut. Never be the most drunk person in the room. Say something if you're uncomfortable.
NEVER loan money to friends. It's not worth ruining a friendship over (have you seen Judge Judy?!). Only loan clothes and books if you're okay to never get them back. You probably won't.
Take time out of studying to go have fun. Go to that BBQ in the park. Stop forcing yourself to do yoga. You hate it. And that's okay. Times change. Uni goes by very quickly. Have a fun ride.

You're probably here because you needed help with your face mask. I wanted to make this video to introduce myself and my channel. So what better opportunity than a Q&A that nobody asked for! In this channel introduction video I talk about my plans for this Youtube channel, why I started making videos, youtubers that I love to watch (Jenna Marbles, SimplyNailogical, Molly Burke and Joanna Cedia to name a few). I talk about my first job living my best 16 year old life on the checkouts of ASDA (Walmart). Cringey old videos I posted. The thing I've done that's required the most courage in my life was probably the time I bought a one way flight to Barcelona to work at a kids camp over summer. Courageous, or stupid. Still not 100% sure. And my hobbies? They're scattered in amongst doing a PhD in science, but I do Scottish Gaelic language classes and play the piano if nobody is listening.
P.S. I moved! So I also chucked in an unsolicited office tour. Yes I tried to make it look like a natural history museum/ botanical gardens (inspired by my favourite themed restaurant). Yes that giraffe picture gives me life.
Apologies this video is very chatty and... Long! So I'm not sure if anyone will watch for long, but-
HUGE announcement. So since my face mask video has got so many views... I got approved to join the youtube partner program... Eeek! Also... I have absolutely no idea what to do about getting so many new subscribers, and I do honestly keep thinking it must be some accident. But I wanted to make this video to fill you in on the update! So if you have recently subscribed, it's an honour to have you. Thanks for watching. I'm not sure if a 14 minute self-indulgent Q&A is what you had in mind. Anyway. I'll get on and make some more videos! See you in the next one... Bye!

#QandA #GetToKnowMe #ChannelIntroduction #GetToKnowMeTag #Hello #ChannelIntroHow to Hem Curtains by HandEmma Sandy2020-08-08 | I hem pencil pleat curtains without taking them off the rail. Guide for small people and ironing board owners alike. I don't enjoy taking the curtains on and off the rail often, so here are my easy tips for pinning and hemming long curtains without any arm strength or height required!
Finding the perfect length is tricky, but I use pegs for a flexible alternative to pinning up immediately. Next comes the exciting part. Entering the curtain fort. Ironing board (or kitchen chairs) required. Draping the curtains over them, sit with your back to the window, become one with the curtains and get pinning! I measure for every single pin and make sure the lining fabric is being well behaved too. A quick iron and we're ready to sew!
There are 100 ways you can attach the hem up... fabric glue, ironing strips, machine sewing, hand sewing... and I chose an easy hand sewing option. A simple whip stitch used to hem the old bottom edge to the lining fabric. She does the job. These curtains took 45 mins per side, so find a podcast, phone a friend and you'll be done in no time!
Finishing up the left and right side edges of the seam is important. I try hard to make this look professional and seamless... by doing a blind hem! This can be a little fiddly, but you open up the ends to look inside, and zig zag between the inside edges. When you pull the thread through, it zips itself up and the thread is invisible inside. Don't forget to finish your sewing with a few knots.
Now the bottom looks lovely, lets sort the top. Knowing how to hang pencil pleat curtains is a club. Welcome. The trick is with the three cords that run along the top inside tape. Pull these to length (half of the width of the window). Secure the thread to length with a slip knot and tuck the ends in. Once you know how to hang pencil pleat curtains, you will never be able to ignore badly hung pencil pleat curtains again. This is a heavy burden and I can only apologise.
May your curtains always hang proud, Emma

#Curtain #CurtainMakeover #hemming #sewingHow to Gold Leaf FurnitureEmma Sandy2020-07-27 | This week I adventured into the world of gold leaf. I added a shiny layer of gold leaf to my furniture handle and accent detailing. Originally the furniture was white. So I upcycled it to add beautiful accent of gold leaf. This is my first gold leafing project, so learn from my mistakes, and don't play like it's papier mache! There's only so much I can learn from videos of professionals making everything look easy... so I hope you enjoy following me along this crafty adventure, craft with me and learn from my mistakes - note to self... Gold Leaf is NOT stretchy...
The technique that worked for me was going section-by-section, applying an even layer of craft of PVA glue, waiting 1 minute and then covering with a single sheet, pressing down with my fingers. I had no luck working with (totally the wrong type of) brushes, so after my first attempt, I dusted everything down and decided to work with my hands. Hope you enjoy!
#GoldLeaf #GoldLeafArt #Gilding #Crafts #Crafting #UpcycleHow to Hand Sew a Seam | The Basics of Back StitchingEmma Sandy2020-06-11 | All you need is a needle and thread! This is a very simple step-by-step tutorial for how to back stitch a basic back stitch seam.
First, cut your thread to length. Measure out three times the length of your seam. Bite the string so it gets a pointy cut. I find using scissors gives a blunt cut that's prone to fraying and is much harder to thread the needle.
Thread your needle by rolling the thread in between your thumb and index finger. Slowly reveal the tip of the thread. Rest your needles eye on your finger and push the thread through the eye. I thread the needle through while my fingers are squishing the thread. Yes it can be a little hit and miss, but just line up the eye and the tip of the thread!
Draw a pencil line to give a sewing line. I find it impossible to sew in a straight line! Also, if youre sewing on a curve, this is a perfect way to plan your route and get a nice seam.
Now, the neat, slow & steady method is to sew one stitch at a time. The quicker way is to weave multiple stitches. See what works for you. Also, different materials (stiff or thick) can sometimes be difficult for the multiple-stitch weave method.
If you need to take a stitch out, just pull the needle off the thread, and pull each stitch out individually using the needle for control. Then re-thread the needle and you're good to go. The stitches are easier to reverse than in knitting & nothing will fall apart, so don't be worried about taking out stitches.
To sew a back stitch, remember to turn the thread back on itself and seal up every one of the stitches.
Finally, knot up your seam so it doesn't fall out. Make a stitch, but before your pull it through, pass the needle in the loop to make a knot.
If you're looking for a practical project to hand-sew, I have a face mask tutorial that is linked here: youtu.be/CAnVd_DOVQk
#HandSewing #SewingTutorial #Sewing #HowToSewHow to Make Pancakes | A Fool-Proof Golden Fluffy Pancake RecipeEmma Sandy2020-06-06 | How to make pancakes. The secret is melted butter. If you came here to make some fool-proof fluffy golden pancakes then sit back and take note. It's 1:1 with the flour & milk, let her rest, then into a sizzling HOT pan.
THE BATTER- Start by melting a slice of butter in the microwave (max 30 second bursts). You don't need to bubble the butter, just microwave until it melts.
Next, I add 3 key ingredients: Flour (plain or self raising, balance up by adding extra baking powder if you use plain flour) Egg (1 egg for a regular batch of pancakes, if you add too much egg it goes... omeletty...) Milk (p.s. don't add this first or your butter will go solid. Also, no milk = no problem, use cream/ creme fraise/ soured cream as a substitute)
Add 1 volume flour to 1 volume milk. Toggle the flour and milk until you get the perfect consistency (that's when you can see whisk trails in the batter but its not too solid).
Don't forget: Salt (a pinch, or ignore if you used salted butter) Sugar (a tablespoon) Baking powder (1/2 teaspoons, then always a little bit extra, nobody ever complained their pancakes were too fluffy, eh)
PATIENCE MY FRIEND- Now... LEAVE IT! Let it sit at room temperature for 30 mins - 2 hours. You want to let the batter get to room temperature, and wee bubbles form on the surface. That's when you know it's ready to go. If it's not got bubbles, wap in some more baking powder. Go on. I dare you.
Aaand we're ready to cook. Get the pan hot (see section of ASMR butter sizzling). Yep. Get the pan sizzling hot.
THE DECOY- My sources tell me the first pancake is always pants. So why waste that lovely batter? Add a wee decoy pancake in there to mop up all the butter.
Yes. I ate the decoy pancake.
THE FIRST ONE IS ALWAYS DISAPPOINTING- Yep, the first pancake is always a bit patchy. The heat isn't evenly distributed in the pan. So she looks a little patchy. But beggers can't be choosers. It tasted just fine. Note- the first pancake cooks quicker than the rest. So be at the ready!
THE PERFECT PANCAKE- Here we go. Pour quickly. Now don't take your eye off the prize. DO NOT, and I cannot emphasise this enough, check your phone. This pancake is glowing up. She will be ready in roughly 60 seconds. She's ready for her big reveal. When the sides look cooked. When the bubble mosaic has formed. When the top is still liquid pancake batter.... FLIP!
THE PANCAKE'S ALWAYS GOLDEN ON THE OTHER SIDE- The neighbor's got nutella that you want to try And when time is running out you want to stay alive
About 60 seconds on this side too.
**Pancakes are UP!**
#Pancakes #BasicPancake #Easybreakfastrecipes #Pancake #AmericanPancakes #howtopancakes #Foodtube #EasyPancakes #BasicPancakesThings I Dont Buy or Own Anymore | Minimalism & Money Saving MotivationEmma Sandy2020-05-16 | There are LOTS of ways to waste money.. so here's a list of spending TRAPS that I don't waste my money on anymore!
First up is face wipes. They're also very bad for the environment. So I quit and now I use soft muslin face cloths. Works a dream!
Womens razors are a trap. Mens razors are no different. An epilator is even better as you only have to buy it once!
Fast fashion is a waste of money if it falls apart & looks tatty after 3 washes! Now I don't buy cheapy clothes and would rather spend a wee bit more for quality clothes that last longer. Yes, our mothers would be proud.
I don't buy coffee. I just never started.
I don't even feel the need to buy an "interesting drink". Those days are over.
I don't buy any new books... I have PLENTY to get through. And honestly, I've allowed myself to accept the fact that I'm more of an audio book person anyways.
I don't like candles or air fresheners. So I don't buy them. Yes, this video may have just turned into me grumping for 7 minutes straight.
I don't like baths either. They're sweaty and then you have to wash your hair again anyways. I'm not a fan. So I don't waste my money on bath bombs anymore. A simple solution.
Another example of my withering grumpy soul... I also don't bother with the cinema!
Branded painkillers are a scam. Buy the generic 30p box. I dare you.
Bottled water also hurts my soul. Pollution. And the fact I live in Scotland. I just can't bring myself to pay for the plastic tasting, bottled stuff. No thank you!
So, those are my top things I don't waste my money on. Cheers to being a cheap skate.
#minimalism #moneysaving #financialknowledge #howtosavemoney #minimalistWhy I have 2 bank accounts | Get Organised & Money Saving Motivation HacksEmma Sandy2020-05-16 | You should get 2 bank accounts. Seriously. Here's the best of my money saving tips!
I've always been more of a saver than a spender. I've been doing many of these money saving hacks for years. BUT, since the coronavirus pandemic has swept over us and changed life as we knew it, many more people are wanting to save a wee bit more. So here are my top tips to save £££ in 2020.
I work 2 bank accounts. The first is for the big in and outs (wages, rent, electric, WIFI) for the regular things. The second bank account is what I spend from. So yes, I basically give myself pocket money after everything's taken care of. This has worked well for me as a student (as it was often summer money, then spread it out as long as possible). So a weekly standing order of money was much easier than sitting with my whole summer wages at my finger tips. It's really easy to have two current accounts. The banks won't mind and your credit score won't be burned by two accounts.
I love flexible contracts, but remember they're flexible for you! I'm talking audible, netflix, amazon prime, disney plus, gym memberships... anything that you pay monthly. It's absolutely okay to cancel your spotify for 2 months and then rejoin if you want to. Most people forget that's an option and it's so easy to forget these regular small ish payments. But make them work for you!
Phone contracts are not normally very flexible (hopefully time will change that), but I'm with GiffGaff an they're super flexible. Check them out & get £5 extra credit when you join with over £10 if you sign up with my referral link. giffgaff.com/orders/affiliate/nhill6?ggSMS=app
Online shopping is such a buzz... but step away from the basket! I've noticed the buzz of it comes from browsing and adding items to my basket. It's not from actually paying or getting the clothes/items delivered (most of the time). So I love to let myself browse & then confidently close the tab. More often than not I forget what I added. BUT if I do remember what I found, after a sleep or a few days, then I'll weigh up if I really want items. Also, I didn't mention it in the video, but if a company gives me a countdown timer to shop I get REALLY bad vibes and more often than not I walk away. It's a pressure sales tactic and it's snakey.
I always read the reviews. I always check out as guest. And I ALWAYS unsubscribe from emailing lists... It's marketing. They want your money. If you NEEDED something, you would go to them. Not the other way around. Stand your ground. (and that applies for the new sneeky tactic of shops asking "do you have an email" at the till. well yes sir I do, but you ain't getting it!)
Recently, I've become comfortable with "I don't want to afford that" and said no to things I didn't fancy. FOMO can be real, but if I wouldn't go alone (cinema, concert etc) then I wouldn't pay to go. My old grumpy soul is shining through in this one.
Eating lunch out every day is also very expensive. Fill your freezer with rolls and your cupboard with tins of tuna and you can't go wrong. Unless you don't like either of these thing.
Two bad habits I had were: 1) going on a day's shopping because I was bored 2) going to the supermarket because I was hungry
Don't do these things. They're bad for your bank balance. Didn't your mother ever tell you that?
Also, get a side job. Fun side jobs I've had have been working for "under cover" review companies. Serve Legal and Market Force were companies I've tried out. If you're a student (especially a student with a car) then check out Serve Legal.
BUT. Obviously, the best way to save money is to stop spending it. So, feel free to check out my video on things I no longer buy. I've shifted towards a more minimalist mentality with money recently. Let your inner cheapskate be free with these money saving tips.

This week I collected the best tips for making a well fitting cotton face mask to sew at home with no sewing machine. This pattern fitted best to wear with glasses. I used a cable tie wire to reinforce the nose bridge and make the mask sit flush under glasses. When this mask is worn under the bridge of the glasses it prevents glasses from steaming up!
As I had no printer, I traced the pattern from the computer screen (setting brightness high and tracing round). I used 100% cotton fabric for these face masks. For these masks I have hand sewn them. This did take a long time (roughly 7 hours) for one mask I did start to finish as I did a back stitch to get a tight seam. A simple running stitch would be much faster but will give a looser seam. And I was enjoying the project, especially since time is no obstacle during lockdown!
With rising cases of Corona virus in Scotland, the UK and globally, it's now more common to wear face coverings. It's now recommended to wear a face covering in Scotland. This pattern is easier to stay in place than a scarf for sure!
ALTERNATIVES to cable tie WIRE include pipe cleaners, jewellery wire or a soft garden wire. For finding cable ties, have a search around the TV cables, the WI-FI router cables, or items still in their box.
ALTERNATIVES to ELASTIC include vest top or spaghetti straps, bra elastic, or a simple strip of cotton to tie in a bow.
#Facemask #Facemaskpattern #Facemasksewingtutorial #facemaskhomemade #facemaskhack #facemasksewing #DIYFacemask #DIYMaskWhat I love & hate about Dundee University | Uni traditions, student safety & bad landlordsEmma Sandy2020-04-21 | Here's the deal. I'm a UoD graduate. This is what I think about being a student at the University of Dundee. Disclaimer- I've stuck around to do a PhD. Definitely biased.
When I was first considering Dundee University as a place to study, there wasn't very much info out there about what it was really like as a student. There were a few scripted tours and official videos, but I wanted more insight.
WHAT I LOVE- Everything is close by. Walking from the accommodation in the student halls (Belmont & Heathfield), to the students union, its minutes. All my classes on campus were within walking distance. And the Uni library was so close, I could easily nip home for lunch.
The staff are amazing. Both for Undergrad (life sciences) and postgrad (again... life sciences, just the shinier building), the staff are incredibly supportive & always receptive to emails & poking my head around the door.
The union. Five floors of madness. Two night clubs, one pub, one cocktail bar, one takeaway, one shop, one swimming pool. It was the main place for a night out in first year. Now I just pop in for a cuppa or a piece to eat now and then.
Dundee is CHEAP. The rent, the nightlife, the lack of travel costs... It's the cheapest place to be a student in Scotland.
The Nightbus. Jump on for free and head home safely. What's not to love!
The traditions. I signed up to Gaudi, the uni family tradition. Most schools do it (science, engineering, dentistry, medicine). Something to check out for sure. There's also a caring tradition of 2nd year students visiting the halls accommodation they used to live in. Wee bit of a welcome for the newbys!
DUNDEE UNI HAS A FREE SHOP. Yep. Everything's free.
WHAT I HATE ABOUT DUNDEE UNI- Ninwells (the teaching hospital) is a maze. Security passes. Connecting buildings. No sign posts. ARGH!
The library is too small. It's really hard to find a seat during exam season. (but the library is open 24/7). Desk hogging is also very annoying.
The campus is very noisy. We're talking nightlife every. damn. night. The gym is also very loud. (watch out Belmont & Heathfield).
There are some accommodation traps for students in Dundee. Watch out for too-good to be true tours that promise the world. There are some lousy landlords out there.
Overall, Dundee Uni was incredible as an undergrad. Fun, supportive, affordable. My postgrad is in progress. But so far, so good!
#UniversityofDundeeTuring my Phone into a Digital Microscope | DIY Wood Craft ProjectEmma Sandy2020-04-18 | I had been saving this wee DIY project for a rainy day. This wooden DIY microscope build turned my phone into a digital microscope. I got this DIY wooden microscope, a freebie from VWR scientific (perks of the job, and all that). But the main component was the lens. I'm sure if you wanted to recreate this, a simple microscope phone lens attachment would do the trick! This wooden build was fun and satisfying. Resting my phone on the holder was good for support, and the stage was useful to focus on different items.
The building was a little tricky, and accompanied by many, many splinters. But the scope was assembled in no time. A few samples were collected and analysed. I looked at string, soil, jewellery under the microscope. I think jewellery under a microscope was my favourite. In a devastating turn of events, a spoiled vegetable delivery became my favourite interesting specimen.
