Buteyko Breathing Exercises in 3 minutes by Patrick McKeown
updated
This simple nose breathing exercise is usually practiced for four minutes with the control pause taken before and after. It improves gaseous exchange by introducing light, soft and slow breathing that creates an ‘air hunger’. This helps us reduce our sensitivity to carbon dioxide and boost oxygen uptake in the blood (Bohr Effect).
This is a great exercise for asthma. It is often the first exercise used with an asthmatic when they begin the Buteyko Breathing Method program. When doing this exercise, remain relaxed. The air hunger should be tolerable. If it becomes too difficult, take a break for 30 seconds and try again.
Those following the Buteyko Breathing Program usually see a 50% reduction in symptoms after two weeks.

‘Nose, slow and low’ breathing is another important factor of the courses taught by BCI founder and CEO Patrick McKeown. In this video he explains why this form of deep nasal breathing is so important as part of Buteyko Clinic Method.
Slow and low breathing brings deep breathing into the Buteyko Breathing Method. Deep breathing doesn’t just mean big gulps of air in through the mouth. Patrick explains the importance of deep breathing and its benefits while still emphasizing the importance of light breathing as part of the Buteyko Breathing Method program.

Excessive mouth breathing during exercise can lead to a tightening of the airways (bronchoconstriction). This narrows our airways, causing a blockage in the flow of air to the lungs, making it harder to breathe and often leading to breathlessness, coughing, wheezing and in some cases a full blown asthma attack.
Buteyko Clinic founder Patrick McKeown explains how we can vastly improve our fitness, recovery and athletic output and take control of our asthma by simply switching to nose breathing and learning functional breathing exercises like those taught as part of the Buteyko Breathing Method.

When your control pause remains consistently at 20 or better for four weeks or so, you should start consulting with your family doctor about reducing the level of your medication. When your asthma symptoms have subsided after you’ve successfully followed the program and you’re controlling your asthma more successfully, it makes sense to reduce your dosage.
Tell your doctor that you have been using the Buteyko Breathing Method and want to move to a lower dosage. Doctors may be sceptical but tell them about the success of your experiences and point them to the many clinical trials showing the benefits of Buteyko (buteykoclinic.com/buteyko-trials) or to the many studies undertaken in conjunction with Patrick McKeown, also showing the benefits of Buteyko (buteykoclinic.com/journal-publications/).

The vagus nerve is responsible for the production of nitric oxide in the sinuses. Nasal nitric oxide is a natural anti-viral which helps in our respiratory system defenses alongside our nasal hairs (cilia) and nasal mucus.
By practicing functional breathing such as the exercises in the Buteyko Breathing Method, the vagus nerve can be used to normalize blood pressure. When stimulated, it lowers the speed of the heart rate and dilates blood vessels.
Vagus nerve stimulation can also activate the body’s relaxation response by activating the body’s parasympathetic response, helping to calm us if we’re facing a stressful situation or a panic/anxiety attack.
Buteyko Clinic founder Patrick McKeown leads his guest Ruth through a simple exercise to stimulate the vagus nerve by humming. The levels of nitric oxide in the sinuses can be greatly increased by humming during the exhalation when compared with exhaling silently, as this study shows: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12119224/.

Another all too common complaint among asthmatics is the fact that they can become tired more easily. Buteyko Clinic founder Patrick McKeown explains some of the physiological reasons why this occurs.
Asthma, an issue of the lower airways can often contribute to issues in the upper airways such as sleep apnea. People with asthma often have an increased rate of breathing which can lead to things like a stuffy nose. People with stuffy or blocked noses are 2-3 times more likely to suffer with sleep issues and as a result, tiredness.
To really improve asthma and reduce tiredness, asthmatics are advised to practice breathing exercises for about an hour a day (3 x 20 minutes) to achieve best results.
A former asthmatic himself, it was through practicing the Buteyko Breathing Method functional breathing techniques that Patrick was able to bring his own asthma under control. Not only was Patrick able to reduce medications and vastly improve his quality of life but it was also how he began his own journey to become a breathing therapist, who in the past 20 years has helped thousands of people to improve their breathing and health.

Those with a low Control Pause (approx. 5-15 seconds), usually breathe faster and more upper chest. They tend to have irregular breathing and often feel like they cannot take a deep breath. As your Control Pause increases, your breathing pattern improves.
A CP of less than 25 seconds means your breathing has room for improvement. A CP above 25 seconds means there’s an 89% chance your breathing is functional. Each time your Control Pause improves by 5 seconds, your breathing pattern also improves and you will feel better.
At Buteyko Clinic International, we have found that people who take the time to do the exercises and improve their Control Pause tend to see a significant or total reduction in the symptoms affecting them across a variety of different disorders. This includes asthma, sleep disorder breathing (e.g. sleep apnea), anxiety, panic disorder and many more.
An improved Control Pause means you are making progress with the Buteyko Breathing Method. This means you are learning to reliably improve your carbon dioxide threshold, improving oxygenation of the blood and leading to better all-round health.

When the stresses of life get too much for us, we can be hit with feelings of anxiety and fear. When we suffer this kind of mental distress, it can be very harmful to our wellbeing. For those of us affected by panic disorder, that can send us spiralling into an increased heart rate, fast and upper chest breathing and can often lead to a panic attack.
Learning to manage stressful situations is how we start to address our anxiety and panic disorder and managing stressful situations starts with breathing through the nose.
Let Buteyko Clinic founder Patrick McKeown guide you through some of the reasons why nasal breathing is such an effective way to control anxiety and panic disorder.
Courses on breathing for anxiety and panic disorder can be booked from the Buteyko Clinic website.

But what holds us back from achieving mindfulness?
A person who spent years dealing with a racing mind himself, Buteyko Clinic founder Patrick McKeown says mindfulness is very important but is often not very easy for many people to achieve.
Sufferers from things like anxiety and panic disorder can often find it very difficult to calm a racing mind. We cannot have mindfulness while the mind is racing. For Patrick, when we have a racing mind, there is only one place to start, the breathing.
When we learn to control our breathing, focusing on long, slow, low and deep breaths, we initiate the body’s rest and digest response and this in turn helps bring us into a calmer state of mind, a much better place to start meditating.
We cannot have mindfulness until we address our breathing first.

But when it comes to exercises that help ease our symptoms, asthma and swimming are almost always mentioned together. But why is swimming good for asthma?
Buteyko Clinic International, founder Patrick McKeown guides you through the importance of this exercise to benefit asthma. Many Buteyko Practitioners advise swimming for children and adults suffering with asthma symptoms and Patrick explains a variety of ways that swimming is beneficial to easing your asthma symptoms.
At Buteyko Clinic we prioritize and promote nasal breathing. As we often say, Close Your Mouth and improve your health. However, while breathing through the mouth is the norm in swimming, this is actually much less of a problem than it would be if you were doing a different sport such as running with the mouth open.
Watch and learn as Patrick explains why, if you are an asthmatic, you should probably think about earning some pool time.

You may never have heard this information before, but if you want to know how to reduce asthma symptoms and improve your health, then you need to close your mouth and start nasal breathing. It could be your first step to silence that wheezing lung.
Buteyko Clinic International founder Patrick McKeown brought his own asthma under control 20 years ago using the Buteyko Breathing Method. In this short video he explains the importance of nasal breathing exercises for asthma in order to reduce symptoms and improve health.
Mouth breathing can cause inflammation and narrowing of the lung’s airways. Unlike the nose, the mouth doesn’t filter, warm or moisten the air coming into your lungs, making us much more susceptible to colds, infections and potentially respiratory disorders.
When you are short of breath, you may think big gulps of air through the mouth is how to bring it under control. This will not help, in fact, it may make things worse.
Thousands of people with asthma have seen their symptoms reduced significantly thanks to the Buteyko method. BCI are very successful with the functional breathing training they offer. Generally, asthmatics attending Buteyko International clinics to see a 50% reduction in asthma symptoms after two weeks, as long as they practice the required daily breathing exercises between clinics.

Buteyko Clinic International on YouTube.
Over 20 years’ experience of international breathing expert Patrick McKeown at your fingertips.
The Buteyko Clinic results from Patrick McKeown’s commitment to share this work with as many people as possible. Since first experiencing the power of the Buteyko breathing technique – which he often says has changed his life for the better in unimaginable ways – he works tirelessly to introduce the practice to adults and children with chronic health conditions.
Breathwork is currently riding a wave. Since 2002, when only a few people were working with the breath and breathing exercises were the domain of elite athletes, committed yogis, and other high-level professionals, awareness of breathing has changed and become more mainstream.
Now, breathing and sleep are hot topics in health and wellbeing. Both can be transformed using simple Buteyko breathing exercises.

Mouth Breathing in Children Buteyko Educator Patrick McKeown
The physiologic breathing mode in the human being is nasal, regardless of age. Any factor leading to the upper airway (UA) obstruction causes nasal breathing to be replaced by mouth breathing, among which mechanical events, allergic and non allergic inflammatory diseases.
However, even after these mechanical factors are removed, MB continues in most cases due to patient’s mouth breathing habit.
The mouth breathing syndrome is characterized by a set of signs and symptoms, which may be present in subjects who replace an adequate and efficient nasal breathing mode by the mouth for a period equal or superior of six months. .
