produced by: JUDGEmarc goone - croquet (full album stream)marcgoone2021-05-14 | i spent quarantine alone locked inside a tiny guest house in beverlywood, los angeles. the space was cramped, but the saving grace of the place was a private little outdoor patio which i begrudgingly shared with the worlds largest population of crickets, or, as i like to call them, croquets.
i woke up everyday and spent my daylight hours grinding online poker - playing 3-4 tables at a time nonstop. i’d eat breakfast while playing poker. workout while playing poker. call my family while playing poker. the sun would set, and i’d close out the tables and walk down the tiny hall into my tiny bedroom studio, where i’d write and record until the sun came up, and then do it all over again. for 8 months. just me and the croquets.
when i started working on this album, my life was a mess. i was navigating a potential breakup with my girlfriend of 9 years. i was on the verge of quitting poker after an extended brutal stretch. i hadn’t written a song, or even stepped into the studio in ages. i was an irritable, miserable, downtrodden shell of myself.
things have changed a lot since i moved out of that little house. my (then) girlfriend came out to los angeles with me. we moved together into a (less tiny) house. poker provided me with a level of stability and comfort for the first time in my adult life. oh, and my (then) girlfriend? we’re engaged.
i don’t really have much in common with the person who started this journey in music more than a dozen years ago. my tastes have evolved. my priorities have shifted. while i’ll always be writing, recording or creating in some form or fashion - this feels like the end of the road for “marc goone”.
still - it seemed fitting to put this album out into the world before turning the page on a new chapter. this album that saved my life. this album that i worked on every night for 8 months in that tiny house in beverlywood, all while my little co-inhabitants caused quite the ruckus on that wonderful little patio. this one is called, “croquet”. it’s out now everywhere. i hope you enjoy.how much $ i made from my biggest song (3.8 million streams)marcgoone2021-03-31 | here go a little video about how much money i made from spotify and apple music streams for my biggest songdont EVER sign with a record label...marcgoone2021-03-23 | today i’m going to talk about why you should never sign with a record label.
labels are archaic, piece of s--t tasteless vulture suits who’s entire business models revolve around mercilessly exploiting those they are purported to help by wielding an unbalanced power dynamic to plunder the ownership rights of creators while dangling a tri-tipped carrot of validation, fortune and fame to squeeze every last drop of profitability out of artists while they laugh their s---ily dressed asses to the bank.
back in the day, labels employed talent scouts called A&Rs who’s job it was to unearth undiscovered artists and nurture and develop them into respectable money printing machines. labels used to have to rely on taste in order to determine who to sign. which was a bummer for labels, because while good taste is literally the only requisite for being a quality artist, it’s not exactly found in exceedingly high supply in corporate headquarters.
in the year of our lord 2021, i still hear some of my artists friends giving reasons why they think they need a record label. they’ll say things like:
but marc, i need money to make music. well, a label isn’t giving you money, they’re giving you a loan. and the funny thing about loans is, you have to pay them back.
if a labels willing to give you a $100,000 advance - it’s because they’ve projected you’re going to make a lot more than that $100k very soon.
of course, in some cases, you may not. labels still have to put up the capital, and they’re still taking a bit of a gamble, i’ll give them that. but, labels are gambling in the same sense a casino is “gambling” by letting a blue haired octogenarian pour her retirement savings into the slot machine - the only difference is...the label reserves the right to keep 80% of the winnings should she hit the jackpot.
here’s the good news - you don’t need money anymore to make quality music. once you start generating revenue -- if you really really really need some cash - take out a small business loan. this is essentially the same thing as the advance you’d get from a label - except the bank doesn’t seize ownership rights to your recordings for the next 46 years.
in addition - i know NFTs are a big buzzword right now, but i think they’re going to change everything very very soon. upcoming artists could allow fans to have ownership stakes on the ground floor of those they believe in - without sacrificing their entire future catalogues. say you sell a couple NFT’s of your first EP or album that includes 10% ownership stake in that project forever, allowing your early fans to make an investment in an artist they believe in.
i’ve also heard some of my friends saying - yeah marc, i know labels aren’t ideal, but i can’t do everything myself, i’m an artist not a CEO, i need a TEAM to help me.
hire your creative friends that believe in your vision. give your videographer friend a piece of the song they shoot. give your producer a much larger chunk of ownership of the song then the label would ever give them. if you can’t pay cash right now - offer them upside. find people who are hungry and on the same level as you. there are talented 18, 19, 23 year old kids all over the world who have a passion for directing and would love the opportunity to start building their portfolio. find creative people - and build from the ground up together.
finally, i’m sure some people will say - ok ok, we get it, labels dont really offer you money, and you can build a team yourself, but surely a label offers connections that are helpful.
what connections? radio? who cares, and besides all radio takes is money. playlisting? ok - if you’re on a label roster with 50 other artists, how hard is that label really pushing you to get placed on major editorial playlists. are all 50 other artists on your label getting placed? or maybe just 3 or 4 or 5? theres a finite amount of slots on rap caviar. is your label really gonna push for you to get that last slot and tell travis scott to go f--- himself?
hm, they say, well, what about getting big name features? sure - but that comes right out of your recoupable cash. ok, so the label gets you a feature with lil laremie for 75k and your song does 5 million streams. congrats. now you’re an additional 50k in debt to the label.
in conclusion - labels exploit artists innate need for validation. they throw a budget behind you. they make sure youre seen and heard. and your art finally gets attention - but now you no longer own your art. in fact, you’re in debt in perpetuity to the label for the budget they put behind your art to make it profitable (for them) and then the label moves on to squeeze every last cent out of the next young, upcoming artist as you’re left with abso-f---ing-lutely nothing.
next week - i’m going to talk about why you should sign to my new label - squishmytomato records. thank you guys for watching, and have a gentle day.i played a $20,000 poker hand...marcgoone2021-03-17 | i played a $20k pot on the live at the bike poker stream, here's what happened...
IG: @marcgoone tiktok: @marcgoone37 ---------- click here to check out our sponsor: larry's little roly things http://bit.ly/larryslittlerolythings ---------- today i’m going to go over my thought process during a nearly $20,000 poker hand i played. this was the biggest pot in my life up to that point. so, let’s go back to august 2019. i was playing on live at the bike, a poker game streamed to youtube and twitch from the bicycle casino in los angeles.
the game is no limit texas hold em, and the small blind and big blind are both $5. additionally, in this game there is a $50 “ante” the big blind most post as well - so this game is deceptively big. it plays much closer to a $20/40 blind game then a typical 5/5 - as most players buy in for anywhere from $4000 to upwards of $20000.
nick picks up pocket aces, and comes into the pot for a raise of $125 in middle position. i look down at QJs next to act, and i elect to go for a reraise, or a “3bet” in poker lingo to $375. i’m going to be either raising or folding my hands quite a bit here - as there are two players behind me who will have position on me the entire hand should they elect to come into the pot, which disincentives me from just calling nick’s initial raise.
i’m going to be continuing with a raise, or 3bet, with a range of strong hands including suited broadway cards like QJs or ATs, suited connectors - like T9s or 87s, and wheel aces, like A3-A5s. i’m also going to be 3betting most of my big pairs - jacks thru aces, and a good portion of my AK and AQ offsuit hands.
however, considering this is an ante game and all the dead money in the middle, i’m going to want to continue as a call some of the time as well. hands that function well as calls include medium pairs like pocket 7s, middling suited aces like A9s, or some of the better offsuit broadway hands like KQo and AJo. but, if i only continued as a call with these specific hands - any aware opponent who’s paying attention would be able to exploit me and put a lot of pressure on by either 3betting behind me, or running large bluffs post flop on boards where they know i can’t have many strong hands.
so, to protect against being exploited, i’m going to put a few strong hands in my calling range as well.
however - like i initially mentioned, i do have an incentive to be 3bet or folding a good amount of the time, and QJs is a hand that plays well at this stack depth in a 3bet pot, so i make it $375. everyone else folds, and the action comes back around to nick, who has a pretty easy decision to go for the 4bet here with the aces. nick elects to go for a very small sizing of $875. considering we start the hand extremely deep at about $9500 effective, and nick’s going to be OOP the entire hand, if i were in his shoes i’d probably choose a sizing somewhere between $1400-1500 basically saying, i’ve got aces, kings, AK, or a bluff. with his sizing, i think i have a pretty easy decision in position to call with almost all of my hands that 3bet here and see a flop.
the flop comes 6KA, with 2 spades. a pretty good flop for my specific hand. nick elects to go for a 1/3 pot size bet of $600, which i like.
in a 4 bet pot on a board texture like this where my opponent is the preflop 4 better - he can have all the aces, kings and AK here, so he has a pretty big advantage on this board in terms of the entire range of hands he gets here with. therefore, i’m not going to have any raises at all here, even with my strongest hands i’m going to elect to just call. i call the $600 and hope to see a good turn.
boom. the beautiful 7 of spades on the turn. i make the second nuts. nick checks, and now i have a decision on sizing. in game, i elected to go with a sizing of about 60% pot, or $1800. as i rewatch the hand, i’m not sure i love this sizing. nick is going to be weighted here to sets, two pair, and give ups, therefore, i think i prefer a larger sizing here because his two pair + hands are just never ever folding.
so, to check my thinking, i opened up PIOSolver, which is a tool that allows you to simulate and analyze poker hands thru the lens of game theory optimal - and i simmed the hand.
i bet $1800, nick jams all in. i pause for about 4 seconds - as this is the biggest pot i’ve ever played in my life up to this point, but i quickly come to my senses and throw in the call. we run the river twice, and i have to fade all the spades, and any board pairing cards that would give him a full house... but i hold both times and scoop a nearly $20,000 pot. pretty good day, overall.
so, i hope you guys enjoyed a little peak behind the curtains of seeing how i dissect a hand in real time. i know it was a little bit strategy intensive, but, if you wanna see more poker stuff, let me know.i spent $1200 to promote my song. heres what happened...marcgoone2021-03-10 | i spent almost $1200 dollars to promote my song on tik tok, youtube, spotify and instagram. i paid influencers to use my song in their videos in hopes of generating millions of streams on spotify and apple music i also paid to have my song playlisted on multiple playlists on spotify. if you're wondering how to promote your music in 2021, and where to spend your money to help you rack up streams - here you go. i charted the progress of how many streams my song received over 4 weeks, and what worked... and what didn't. here are the results...
