Lucy worked in general practice whilst having her children until 2005, and then worked for the Department of Defence at HMAS Cerberus as a civilian medical officer for 13 years. During that time she noticed a large increase in obesity in the current serving members and the new recruits.
Dr. Burns has muscular dystrophy which impairs her mobility. In her 20’s she managed her weight with exercise. Alas, this is no longer possible and she found that as she got older following the standard low fat style of dieting was unsustainable and unsuccessful. She became overweight/obese and was insulin resistant.
Another doctor friend introduced her to keto and she was hooked. A year later she opened her low carb general practice clinic called 'Epiphany Medical Weight Loss'. Along with her colleague Dr. Mary Barson, the pair have also formed a business called 'Real Life Medicine' and have an on-line program that addresses both the physiological and psychological causes of obesity. Her strong belief is to empower people to manage their health through nutrition and the low carb way of living.

The prevailing theory of atherosclerotic heart disease is demolished and Dr Mason carefully constructs a case, using peer reviewed science, that blood clots are in fact, the main source of atherosclerosis. The nexus between the triglyceride to HDL ratio and heart disease is examined with particular reference to the root causes of cardiovascular mortality.
As a bonus, Dr Mason lifts the lid on just what exactly makes seed oils so problematic.....and it comes down to much more than oxidation stress. The major issue in fact, is that seed oils contain phytosterols, or fake plant cholesterol, which interferes with the normal essential functions of cholesterol within the body.
Dr Paul Mason obtained his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney. He is also a fellow of the Australasian College of Sports and Exercise Physicians, holds a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy and a Masters degree in Occupational Health. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of the Defeat Diabetes program, an evidence-based program focussed on lifestyle management of metabolic illnesses, including type 2 diabetes.
If you would like more information on how the triglyceride to HDL ratio can be used to predict possible benefit from statin therapy, check out this article co-authored by Dr Mason, Prof Bikman and Prof Diamond. You might also consider sharing it with your doctor. journals.lww.com/co-endocrinology/fulltext/2022/10000/statin_therapy_is_not_warranted_for_a_person_with.14.aspx

This is followed by a brief history of statins, including the high rates of cancer in test animals seen with the first statin to come to market, and the massive (+$1,000,000,000) legal payouts made to settle lawsuits from statin side effects.
Specific statin side effects, including dementia are covered, followed by a close analysis of the measurable benefits that may be attributed to statins. This includes a review of a recent paper co-authored by David Diamond, Ben Bikman and Paul Mason that discusses how to identify who is likely and not likely to benefit from statin therapy using triglyceride and LDL levels.

This decision was made after seeing the power of a low carbohydrate diet to help people lose weight and for some to even reverse diabetes. Dr Figtree had previously tried to help patients using various diets such as low fat diets, Optifast, the 5:2 fast but nothing really worked. Then Dr. Figtree read a book called “Always Hungry” By Professor David Ludwig where he explained the INSULIN CARBOHYDRATE MODEL OF OBESITY.
Dr. Figtree has now been practising low carb medicine for 2 years. She describes this as the most rewarding part of her career, stopping medications and patients feeling well.

Dr. Chaffee began his University education studying Molecular & Cellular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 15, which culminated in attaining his MD from the Royal College of Surgeons.
Dr. Chaffee is an All-American rugby player and a former professional athlete in England and America, having taken several years off from his education for the pursuit of sports between his undergraduate degree and medical school. Throughout his athletic career he saw first hand the monumental difference that diet makes to performance and recovery.
Dr. Chaffee almost accidentally came across and practiced a fully carnivorous diet from age 20 to 25, having first learned of the toxic nature of plants during his University education. Since then he has rediscovered this truth and more and has dedicated many years and a large part of his professional practice to the study and education of diet and nutrition. He personally practices a fully carnivorous diet and currently resides in Perth, Australia where he does private consultations and clinics in functional medicine and nutrition.

Upon completing his Neurology training in Melbourne, Dr. Phillips realised that he had no interest in going the usual route of further specialising in a particular neurological disorder. He wanted to specialise in a therapy, but no such fellowship existed. Thus, he bought a one-way ticket to the other side of the world and departed the medical system, travelling and working in different places for three years, creating his own self-taught fellowship during which he learned about a variety of therapeutic possibilities that he had never previously considered.
Upon completing his 3-year “fellowship” it dawned on him that metabolic strategies, particularly fasting and ketogenic diets, were promising therapeutic options for a range of disorders. He re-entered the medical system by commencing work as a neurologist in New Zealand, where his colleagues have helped him to apply these strategies to a number of humanity’s most difficult neurological disorders so as to determine whether they are feasible, safe, and can make an impact in terms of helping patients. This has resulted in his team conducting a world-first randomised controlled study of a ketogenic diet in Parkinson’s.
The Canadian-born, Australian-trained neurologist ultimately wishes to help create a new field of Metabolic Neurology that emphasises applying metabolic strategies in healthcare so as to potentially heal many difficult disorders at their core, with the overarching goal being the improved health and enhanced nobility of humanity.

"The Harcombe Diet for Men" (2011) gave men the super quick read they were after and then two more books were published in 2013 - a collaboration with Hodder & Stoughton: "The 3-Step Plan" and a completely revised "Why do you overeat?"
Zoë has a PhD in public health nutrition. She struggles to find anything that is being taught in 'conventional' nutritional worlds that is true or evidence based. Hence why she spent 2008-10 writing The Obesity Epidemic - 135,000 words blowing apart: the misapplication of thermodynamics to dieting; the notion that 1lb = 3,500 calories, let alone that a deficit of 3,500 calories will lead to a weight loss of 1lb; the Seven Countries Study and the subsequent change in our diet advice, which has caused the obesity epidemic; the role of exercise in obesity and much more.

His extensive day-to-day clinical practice meant that the wards and the outpatient clinics became his focus for research. This clinical experience together with extensive reading and research led to his realisation that vitamin D held the key to understanding many illnesses after he realised that his darker skinned and less sun exposed patients were especially prone to illness. He believes that the main thing predisposing people to severe outcomes when they suffer from infections is vitamin D deficiency. For a thesis based on his research he was awarded the degree of MD University of Manchester in 1993.

While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connection between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation,” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the rapidly declining health of her patients.
In 2019, Michelle’s health started to fall apart. She was experiencing severe muscle pain, spasms, and crippling anxiety. She decided to follow a low carbohydrate, high animal protein diet simply to see if it might alleviate the severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, her decades of anxiety began to fade.
After reviewing the extensive clinical trials on a low carbohydrate diet, she knew she had to spread the word about this transformative way of eating. Michelle has written the book, “The Dietitian’s Dilemma,” detailing how the current nutrition guidelines came into existence and advocating a low carbohydrate, animal-based way of eating as an option for individuals struggling with diabetes, mental disorders, eating disorders, sarcopenia, and heart disease.
