🔱 Falklands War. How the Argentine Submarine, Sante Fe was Raised Bigwavemaster1 2022-06-06 | HMS Antrim’s Westland Wessex helicopter (Humphrey) launched an attack with two Mk 11 depth charges against ARA SANTA FEA. Assuming Santa Fe could not dive, a Westland Lynx helicopter from HMS Brilliant and a Westland Wasp from frigate HMS Plymouth also joined the attack, as did the Wasp aircraft from ice patrol ship HMS Endurance around an hour later.The Lynx fired a Mk 46 NATO standard lightweight torpedo which failed to hit the submarine; the Wasps fired AS-12 anti-ship missiles, and all aircraft used machine guns to strafe the submarine, which returned fire with machine guns.Santa Fe, which displaced almost 2,500 tons when submerged, limped back to the pier at King Edward Point in Grytviken, where her crew rapidly headed ashore, still exchanging fire with the British helicopters.By this time the British warships were steaming in to join the fray, and they were joined by their respective aircraft, having carried out what is thought to be the first successful anti-submarine exercise carried out entirely by helicopters. Here, Alec explains his part in her raising.In one of the first major incidents of the Falklands War; SANTA FE was not only the first ship lost to Argentina during that war but also the first submarine sunk by aircraft since the end of the Second World War. SANTA FE had been engaged in the resupply and transfer of twenty marines to Grytviken on South Georgia when she came under attack by the British on the 23 April 1982; a depth charge was dropped close to the port side causing enough damage to prevent the submarine from diving again. She attempted to run to the relative safety of Cumberland Bay but was pursued by Wessex and Lynx helicopters. Clark, who piloted one of HMS BRILLIANT's Lynx helicopters, attacked Santa Fe with a homing torpedo, which missed its mark. He then strafed the submarine with GPMG fire until it became nonoperational and the crew surrendered.

Both of which crashed with loss of life. Some of these dives were record breaking and involved equipment used for the first time.

Used for something that has a rope on it to something else and a good way to start when lashing something down2) The Rolling HitchAlmost a variant of the Clove Hitch. This hitch will hold fast when pulled diagonally. Very good to use for lifting of dragging logs, poles or any other round & smooth surface. 3) The Heaving Line KnotA Heaving Line is a thin rope tied to a mooring rope that is thrown ashore to enable the linesman ashore to pull in the the mooring rope.The Heaving Line Knot adds weight to the end of a rope which enables the rope to travel further.A Monkey's Fist would ideally be used but the Heaving Line Knot is very quick to make and effective in a hurry.

Anyone can learn knots from a book but can you do them in real life and when it matters?1) The BowlineProbably one of the most important knots you will need to know.This is known as a safety knot. If tied properly it will not slip or jam. Even when put under great strain, wet and left for a long time, this knot will come undone when you want it to, but not come undone when you don't.2) The Sheet Bend (Again)Probably one of the simplest, yet most important knots that you will need to know. Primarily used for tying two ropes of different thickness together. The loop is made from the thicker rope. Also used for making the mesh in fishing nets.This rope will hold under any tension, but only if there is little movement, and can be easily undone again. A double Sheet Bend is more secure. this shall be shown later3) The Fisherman's KnotThe best knot for permanently tying 2 ropes/twine/yarn/string together. Called the Fisherman's Knot because this is the knot used when mending or breeding a net. When the needle (bobbin) runs out of twine a new length will be added using this knot. The Fisherman's Knot is simply made by using 2 x Overhand Knots (See Part 1)
