I was mostly the only black person in most of my schools. I could go outside and play with anybody, but they couldn’t come to my house. My mother used to take me out of school a lot and she’d take me out to go on marches a lot, so that’s what made me an advocate. Used to see Malcolm X and I didn’t mind getting out of school for that ‘cause I just thought he was the greatest. When I got here in North Carolina, I wanted to make a change in things. Blacks didn’t have that right at that time in 1965 in order to vote. All of these people had gotten beat up, water thrown on them, and dogs biting them and everything else just to get the right to vote. It had to be. The fighting that I do now is different. I don’t raise my hands. I don’t raise my voice. I believe that people are people. Give back to the world when people give to you. Everything gets better every day. Johanna L. // Lives of Women WIGS 2017-11-09 | "I’m born and raised in East LA. I grew up with nothing, not even a toy - I never had a toy in my life. Before I went to college I was like, ‘OK. I know I have a full ride scholarship.’ The leadership scholarship - they pay for everything. The school I went to was Grinnell College. From the first day that I landed in Grinnell, Iowa, I was the first Hispanic everyone had talked to in their life.I always never really fit in and I understood what it meant to be an individual of color, but never did I think I was gonna be ‘the enemy.’I was targeted various times. I can’t even wear my clothes because as soon as I put it in the washer, someone comes and throws it into the snow and that’s it. The hate crimes started getting worse and I knew that if I left, I would just prove what they thought. I came from scum, according to them. I came in with literally nothing, and I realized that if I left, I would leave with nothing, so I could take that risk, and that was what kept me driving, and that’s what I did: I finished. I was in such a dark place, and about a month into it I went, ‘Oh, this isn’t going away.’I had an older brother, and he passed away from a heart attack. He was someone who had lived his life in fear. That became something and I was like, 'God, I don’t want to live my life like that.'Fear is a huge killer so I set a goal not to be afraid. What is the worst that can happen? My best friend likes to say, ‘What if I faint?’ I go, ‘Then you faint. Go on, faint! So be it.’It was truly a horrible period that turned out to be one of the best periods because it spurred me into action. It’s about women not being afraid. I’ll just be disgusting. To hear that some of the choices that I made were because we argued — I think that would hurt her feelings. But I think it’s really a good thing.Because, even when I would argue with her, I would still want her to be proud of me. I still think that all of the choices that I made have led me to who I am today, and I like who I am today. So no, I guess I don’t really have any regrets.If I got to the end of my life and I hadn’t done anything that was good or important — I think that would make me really upset, because it would mean my life would have been wasted.If that happened, it would disappoint my mother, but I think in my mother’s eyes, I don’t think that there’s any way for that to happen. Cindy S. // Lives of Women WIGS 2017-10-26 | “My aunt contracted polio. Our family was quarantined. It was an epidemic, no one knew what was causing it. People just didn’t wanna get too close. Polio is viral and my aunt was totally paralyzed from the neck down. Even though she was in an iron lung she was still gorgeous and she raised money for the cause. I was just a kid. So I went to rotary clubs, veterans groups, asking for money for eradicating polio. The Salk vaccine was later discovered, which was an amazing feat. Later in life, when I started doing community service, it all came forward again. For the last 21 years what I do is advocate for resources. Putting a spotlight on important issues. Like - what does that mean?I was like, ‘Well, I’ll show her.’ Later on in my life, I saw an audition for Stomp. This is the hottest thing that was happening in New York at the time. We’re gonna go to this audition, and at the end, something in me went, ‘I could get this,’ but my head was going, ‘No, don’t get it. There’s no way I could do the show. What did I get myself into?’This was the first time I realized I have a nature of kind of sabotaging myself. Weeks pass. I got a phone call: ‘We’d like to offer you a contract.’ ‘Oh my God! I got this job, the dream of a lifetime.’ It’s just amazing how words can really affect someone’s life in a really good way or a really messed up way. I’m looking at the ultrasound screen as the tech is waving the wand over my belly and I said to her before she said anything, ‘I don’t see a heartbeat.’ Like when you get pregnant you know the advice is: don’t tell anyone until you get through your first trimester. I don’t necessarily believe in ‘don’t tell anyone’ because the people you are gonna be the first people you tell that you’re pregnant are also the people that you want by your side if you have a miscarriage.Having had both a pill-induced miscarriage and a D&C, I can tell you that these are invasive procedures and they’re painful. Anyone who tells you that people are using abortion rather than birth control is, like, out of their mind.I was starting to worry, am I ever gonna be able to have a baby? So we went to this fertility clinic and the first round of IUI worked. We went in and there was a heartbeat. I told myself when I was little, I’d live a totally different life.I was the first black, female stockbroker in Austin, TX. I had people tell me, ‘You’ll never succeed. Females can’t do this job. This is a man’s job.’ I tried to be partners with some male brokers, and they told me that I would never succeed in that market because of the way I looked.It makes you question your abilities, but it also makes you want to figure out a way around it. If you can’t do that at that company, find a way to do it somewhere else. I wanted to build up my clientele as a stockbroker and that came to fruition. The fighting never stopped. I’ve been kind of in semi-retirement the last 14 years, going out into outer space every once in awhile with my mind. I regret that I have a mental illness. When I’m sick, my old friends they go, ‘Well, she’s being weird. It stigmatizes me and I don’t like that because your friends let you down. I feel like if I’d had a hip replacement, I would have at least gotten a ‘get well’ card. When you’ve been diagnosed and spent two weeks locked up, forced on medication by a psychiatrist that won’t even talk to ya, it takes a little while just to get back to normal where you feel like pluckin’ your eyebrows again. It’s more healing for me to talk about it openly than being forced on medication. I’m not any ordinary plant lady. I remember looking in the mirror and I was like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna fuckin do this.’Before I had children, I was going out all the time. I was drinking, smoking, doing drugs. The moment I found out I was pregnant, I knew that I had to be an adult and I had to change my ways. A lot of people doubted me.. friends, family, and stuff like that. The idea of an abortion - I just couldn’t do it, and that’s one of the things that everyone was pressuring me to do at the time. That discussion has burned a lot of bridges. Like, if you’re pro-choice, you should be OK with either outcome. I’m pro-choice. I decided to have children. I enrolled back into college for business. I knew that there was an entire half of where I came from that I didn’t know.The first time I went to Korea just happened. My grandparents were living in the United States in the early 1900s. My grandmother sent money to the independence movement for Korea. She wanted to be buried in Korea. That was her dying wish. Last year, we exhumed the remains, and the next day I was on a plane to Seoul. I had one man come up to me. He was part of the movement, and he had tears in his eyes and he shook my hand and said, ‘You are my family. You’re my family now.’My tears welled up in my eyes too. I was like… ‘Yes. I was a selective mute, so I chose to whom I spoke. Luckily, we end up with German grandparents in the north of Germany.My grandfather was the man who made me start talking. My grandfather was a very sad man after the Second World War. We were just struggling against the government to try to make something happen in the middle of the desert. My dad didn’t care for it originally. He thought it was a cult. He was very right-wing Republican, Harvard Business School. So I came out of that experience, understanding conservative finances, and then I’m sort of in a really liberal world.I sought his advice to help us become solvent and stable. The risk of not doing it right would cause you to fail or to lose people or to have them lose their paychecks. That’s often my biggest motivation - that’s why I’m CEO. I know that my father was really proud that I developed as a leader through Burning Man. I remember ‘05 was the year he told me he wanted to come. It was very validating to have my dad at Burning Man. Looking back on the city and seeing all the colorful lights, he knew it was a creative force on the world stage. And I didn’t know what to do and I had this little baby to take care of. As a new mother, losing your mother, there’s a whole extra layer to deal with. We were rowdy Canadians - ya know, hockey-playin’, drinkin’, good-time-lovin’ Canadians.When I moved to New York City, I started getting chronic pancreatitis. I was going on a blind date to meet a man who is now my husband, and it was 6pm, and I couldn’t get out of bed. I just thought to myself, ‘It’s nighttime and you can’t get up ‘cause you have been drinking and that’s pathetic,’ but out of that darkness came this determination: you can do better and you deserve better.Then I thought to myself, ‘Oh no. What do most people do on a date? They go for a drink. He said, 'I love art, I love all these other things, but I have to make a living and I’m not able to take care of my daughter.'"I was so much more interested in connecting with this human being then I was about filling out the form and wishing him on his way -- okay life saved. Then I thought, well, am I really supposed to be this doctor? I just knew something wasn't quite right.I decided to leave medicine - and I graduated from medical school - but I didn’t go on and train to be a doctor. I’m a CEO of a health-technology conference company. And so, it’s so important that if you have an opportunity to take a stand that you should do it.I think I used to be shy of that when I was younger but now I’m absolutely proud to do that and tell younger women you can do whatever you want to do -- run a company and be the face of it.Want more stories? He did drink and when he drank, he was not always friendly.If I could hear whistling, I knew it could be a gentle evening. If not, I just waited to see what the evening would bring. I was afraid and so I didn’t get to hug him or do those things that you see a lot of young girls do with their dads. I’ve been blessed with wonderful men to enter into my life but once things seem to get a little too serious, that’s it - I’m out. I think I feel like I might end up in a similar type of relationship, like my mom. I’ve apologized to my children for anything I may have said to them or done to them. It costs money to go to jail. It’s like the shittiest hotel ever. They strip search you, it’s freezing, all the lights are on and buzzing like fluorescent lights, you never know what type of day anything it is. Everything in there is designed to fuck you up. There’s like 24 women in a place where there’s only 18 beds.This girl wakes up. She is total ‘white-power girl’ - she has a swastika on her neck. I was in an abusive home situation with my dad. I was the oldest and I had an 8-year-old sister and 1.5-year-old brother.After many years of living in constant fear, I was like, ‘we gotta go.’ That was the scariest thing I think I’ve ever done. I ended up staying with four different foster families. I stayed in the system ‘til I was 21.I decided to do a masters in special education, and it became clear to me that the students didn’t have disabilities. Their environment was ‘disabling.’ I ended up helping develop programs connecting concepts of gardening to math, science, reading, arts.I can’t imagine doing anything else, but serving. My mom always says, “You had to grow up very quickly,” and I always tell her, “It’s okay, Mom. It’s made me who I am.”I’ve been a caretaker here for 19 years. Every time we have a disaster, my job is to report what’s happening with our cabins. This year we’ve had this storm. Things got crazy. It was definitely a flood situation. Redwoods down everywhere. The road turned into a river. I mean it looked like a warzone. I had been checking all the other cabins that I’m responsible for and I hadn’t even checked my own place. Fifty percent of my house had water going underneath it.It’s been a life lesson for me: that I need to be good to myself. I love the responsibility, but sometimes I’m just like, ‘Okay, I’m done.’So now, here I am, 25 years later, I’m selling as much as I can - gonna just take suitcases - I’m gonna go on this whole big adventure abroad.I’m ready. It’s a double-edged sword sometimes because there are a lot of expectations.I was very against-the-grain. I’m the one that goes to MIT and I started a dance troupe. It became a very big part of my life and my identity, but I never pursued it fully. The most pressure on me is meeting my family’s expectations, but there’s always gonna be some level of criticism. Things can be said to me and I just have to be able to take it, but I can’t ever say anything back. It’s like this sea that just starts to fester and nip at you.Then I met my husband and everything changed. But I became single for the first time at 29, and became single in the dating scene in LA, which was like 'Woah! Has anyone else seen what’s going on in here, ‘cause it’s pretty terrible.'Some of these dates I was going on and experiences I was having with people that were not OK. They were so dehumanizing. I had a one-night stand with a guy, and once he came, he asked me to leave his apartment while he was still inside of me. And I thought these were such ridiculous inhumane experiences that I wanted to talk about them so I started doing a lot of stand up about that.After every set, women always come up to me and say, “You were hilarious and so brave. A friend of mine asked if I had a Jumperoo to donate to a family that she met through her church.‘They’re from Syria. They just moved here.’ We went to visit this family. The mom takes us on a little tour of their apartment and we see that there are critical items that are missing. They have a toddler bed with no mattress. I saw this mom struggling, too, with things completely different than the things that I was struggling with.I wanted them to have everything that I have. I know so many people that would be honored to help them.For me, this work was like a gateway drug. Anything that is going to help them feel safe can go on our list. My mom and he separated when my mother was pregnant with my brother - I think I was two-and-a-half or three years old. My mom left him because he did not want the responsibility of having children and he never looked for us and I never looked for him. I didn’t have any feelings towards him because my grandfather really kind of filled that void, and so did my uncle. I didn’t know why he wasn’t around. I didn’t know why I didn’t have two parents but my mom was enough for me. The way that my dad’s absence has influenced how I relate to men is I am very secure of myself. I’ve always taken care of myself and I think that maybe that’s somehow how it has affected me. You don’t know if it’s right or wrong or if you should tell somebody.When I got married that became an issue too because I don’t want him to touch me. I don’t want a relationship with him. And it was frustrating. You’re a married couple; you’re supposed to have sex, right?I would cry all the time, and I remember one time saying, “God, why does sex have to exist?” Like, I hate this.Two years after, my husband was diagnosed with cancer. His bladder was taken off and his prostate. The doctor said, “This is it for you as a man. You won’t have sex.” And I was like, “Oh my God, that’s what I said one time,” so I regret those words, and I did ask God to forgive me for that. And he’s good. When you paint on the street, you never know.You never know if you’re gonna be in Asia and there’s gonna be a bunch of kids crawling over you or someone who lives on the street who's been talking to you for a week ends up having his last meal with you - that you buy him and then he dies - in front of you - while you’re finishing the mural.When you’re painting on the street, your life is always affected by what’s going on around you, and what is going around you is always affected by you painting whatever you're painting on the street, and it’s this really interesting relationship that I feel like I can never fully grasp but I’m always so excited about.Definitely I’m looking for the white whale. I want - like - huge walls, as big as I can get. I’m a lot like him everyone tells me, so it’d be kind of cool to meet him, but we didn’t need him because my mom has become so successful, and has raised two kids on her own, and gave us everything we wanted. And now with two kids, I’m like, 'Oh my God. How did she do this?' ‘cause my husband does everything for me.I work a lot and I’m making a lot of money, and the women in my family, including my mom are just the strongest, independent, hardworking… So it’s kind of funny that I had two boys.I talk to people about this when I’m drunk somewhere and they’re like, 'Let’s call your dad. My grandmother and my aunt - so much of who I am, the strong person that I am - that person came from them. It wasn’t until later on that I get this huge letter from my mother: 'I have been trying to reach you. I don’t know why you don’t want to talk to me. I’m your mother. I love you. You should love me. Why are you like this?' So I stopped reading her letters.There’s no need for her to feel sad. There’s no need for her to feel guilty. I just don’t think we can have that relationship. My dad is white.I think for him it was kind of a reality check that he had brown kids and he could see the way that the world treated you when you’re brown. And my mom knew what it was like to be discriminated against because of your skin color.When people ask 'What are you?' I say, 'I’m human.'I’ve always had mostly white friends and I got flack from my white friends about 'You know, you say you’re all of these things, but you don’t say that you’re black.' And I was just like, 'Well, I don’t identify as black. That’s not who I am.' And he was just like, 'Well, it is who you are.'That dissonance between how I view myself and how the world viewed me didn’t really snap into focus until college and that’s when people started questioning me on my Jewish identity, too. I always wanted to have my partner carry my genetic child. I felt really narcissistic that this is how I wanted to have a child because it’s a very privileged way to have a child.Hailey was trying to get to me to commit to starting to have kids, asking me, ‘Why won’t you move forward?’ I just broke down and I was like, ‘How can we even do this? Financially, emotionally, logistically?’ And then also, ‘I want to do it this insane way.’Hailey’s kind of a super woman so whatever I say I want to do - you know - it’s kind of like that ‘careful what you ask for.’ This baby is made of my design genetically, but it’s built of her blood, of her energy, so it’s literally this union of the two of us, and that’s what hit me really hard when she was born.We’re so proud of June. My whole family left Russia and got here when I was three.I remember being a Russian person in America. Like I remember seeing kids who had English-speaking parents, or just like American things. They had American lunches, American beach towels. When you’re a kid you’re constantly comparing yourself to other people, because that’s how you understand what ‘normal’ is. We had a lot of help when we got to America. One of the organizations that helped us, they had a record of all the money they spent on us for our health care bills, and education programs, and so my favorite thing that I’ve done is just pay them back, because they invested in us. I’d actually been public about having had an abortion 10 years ago, but that was pre-social media, so now in the age of Twitter and Facebook I was trolled pretty viciously. The experience of withstanding that has been really transformative.In my church, we are prayerfully pro-choice, which means that we believe in the moral agency of women. I think a woman’s moral agency means that she has autonomy over herself to decide what is right for her body and decide what is right for her fetus. So I don’t feel like I’m in conflict with where I go every Sunday.I’m never going to win those pro-life people over. They hate me and they say horrible things about me, and I am in acceptance of that. I’ve constantly told myself that it’s important to be completely independent and self-sustained. Growing up my dad was the breadwinner and my mom was the homemaker and when they split up my mom had never had a job or earned money. She was like half of an adult - you know. The relationship that I’m in right now, it’s been a struggle to get that out of my head, but I have to try to not bail when he’s doing really really well and it just makes me feel like I’m falling far behind. He sat there with the paper in front of him, and he read. And he read a paragraph and he looked at me with tears in his eyes and I had tears in my eyes and we cried. That’s when I really knew that I should teach because the feeling was so incredible to just realize that I may have changed somebody’s life.They asked me, ‘What do you want, Mom, for your birthday?’ I want an educated child, and I don’t want you to ever stop getting educated.
