A short film about Declaration of Independence an artwork by Barby Asante. Art on the Underground 2023-10-16 | Declaration of Independence is a project from Art on the Underground by Barby Asante. Declaration of Independence was launched in September 2023 with a collective performance at Stratford Tube station.As part of this new commission Asante spent time in the photography archives at the London Transport Museum to find images of women of colour at work in different roles across TfL’s history. These found images, including those employed by London Transport’s direct recruitment in Barbados in 1956, are part of the group’s collective process, adding to individual narratives andenriching the artwork’s examination of postcolonial and migration histories. These archive images also form part of three large-scale visual artworks that will be installed at Stratford, Bethnal Green and Notting Hill Green Tube stations, in which the images are placed in dialogue with words from the ‘Declaration’. Produced on vinyl, these pieces will be set within brightly coloured interconnected shapes and lines, forming new speculative constellations and communicating ideas about histories and futures in a collective voice. Central to this artwork is the development of ways to create and occupy space; installed within touching distance alongside station escalators, and above the Stratford Tube station ticket hall, the previously personal and intimate ‘Declaration’ is propelled onto the public stage.
Barby Asante. Declaration of Independence documentation Art on the Underground 2023-09-22 | Declaration of Independence is a project from Art on the Underground by Barby Asante. Declaration of Independence was launched in September 2023 with a collective performance at Stratford Tube station.The collective performance developed out of a series of workshops with Transport for London (TfL) employees producing a script for a new Declaration of Independence that was read and sung aloud to those congregated and passing through the station. Together, the newly written and performed declaration and station artworks foreground Black diaspora narratives of non-binary people and women. The work highlights the histories and divisions of labour that have impacted these narratives, capturing the scale and value of this work to London. Declaration retells stories of domestic and workplace labour connecting them to wider histories of migration as a legacy of colonialism. Where are our voices aloud?' an audio artwork for London Underground by London based artist Shenece Oretha.The work titled Route Words: Where are our voices aloud? centres on Britain’s oldest Black bookshop and publisher, New Beacon Books, based in Finsbury Park. The work draws on New Beacon’s publications’ catalogue, showcasing writing that speaks to the importance of space and language, to a range of communities, their histories and collective futures. The sound piece weaves together extracts from the texts of Erna Brodber, Lorna Goodison, John la Rose, Kamau Brathwaite and Dennis Mitchell to demonstrate the collective force of word and voice. Who Named the Lily? by Monster Chetwynd Art on the Underground 2023-05-18 | 'Who Named the Lily?’ celebrates and laments the complicated history of the Crystal Palace. Monster Chetwynd plays the ‘Fact Hungry Witch’, who explores the story of the Amazonian waterlily, and reveals its links to engineering. The artwork brings to light the politics of Paxton’s developments in industry and architecture, however, the protagonist of this story is the waterlily – a catalyst for ground-breaking technological advancement.
Endurance by Shanti Panchal for Brixton Underground station Art on the Underground 2022-12-15 | A short film about 'Endurance', a new large-scale public commission at Brixton Underground station by Shanti Panchal – launched 17 November 2022 and on view for one year.'Endurance' is a reproduction of a large-scale watercolour artwork in which Panchal has painted a community portrait that observes our continued resilience and interdependency. Shown in the image are three scenes of Londoners – the people include an artist, an NHS worker, a waiter, people at work and at leisure. In the background are buildings, statues and sections of open public space that draw on the Brixton neighbourhood and wider context of London. The architecture seen behind the figures includes the Black Cultural Archives, Brixton Windmill and Tate Modern. Present among the scenes are The African and Caribbean War Memorial and the Cherry Groce Memorial Pavilion in Windrush Square. These draw into the artwork monuments to places and people that we celebrate, that we have lost, that been taken from us, where we gather and build anew. 'Endurance' is the sixth in a series of commissions at Brixton station, following on from Joy Labinjo, Helen Johnson, Denzil Forrester, Aliza Nisenbaum and Njideka Akunyili Crosby. The programme invites artists to respond to the diverse narratives of the local murals painted in the 1980s, the rapid development of the area and the wider social and political history of mural making.

‘PAN AFRICAN FLAGS FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS’ ALLIANCE’ 2019 by Larry Achiampong Art on the Underground 2019-12-20 | Art on the Underground presents an ambitious public commission by British Ghanaian artist Larry Achiampong, which re-imagines London Underground’s iconic roundel, for Westminster Underground station. The commission will be on view until February 2020.As part of the artist’s on-going multi-disciplinary and multi-site project ‘Relic Traveller’, Achiampong will interrupt the traditional red and blue logo that since 1908 has been synonymous with the Underground and London. The commission seeks to consider the possibilities of alternate histories and forms part of Art on the Underground’s 2019 programme which looks at the role artists can play in forming ideas of togetherness and belonging.For this commission, the artist was invited to re-imagine the logo’s design. Achiampong has chosen to focus on Pan African colours that speak symbolically to various African diasporic identities: green, black, and red, which reflect the land, the people and the struggles the continent has endured, while gold represents a new day and prosperity. Eight new designs of the roundel will be installed in seventy sites throughout Westminster Underground station.Based in science fiction and traditional Adinkra symbolism, Achiampong’s roundel redesign builds on the artist’s concept of sanko-time, a theory at the core of his recent practice. Sanko-time is based in the Ashanti word “sankofa”, which roughly translated, means to go back for what has been left behind. “Sankofa” also alludes to using the past to prepare for the future; the wish of being able to go back to an immutable point to make sure that what has been lost is not lost any longer. The project, as a result, opens narratives regarding African mythologies and their relationship to science fiction.Achiampong’s work with Art on the Underground provides an opportunity to explore imaginations and a sense of connectedness between the African diaspora, and to reconsider their often forgotten or erased contributions to the city.
