These structural barriers also extend to areas such as government contracting and procurement, access to capital, banking status, and ownership of employer firms—a key measure of wealth generation, Yet as prior research from Brookings and Gallup has noted (and contrary to the patterns observed in ownership rates), entrepreneurial traits tend to be higher among Black, Latino or Hispanic, and multiracial workers. We hope this conversation can spotlight and uplift not only the opportunity of investing in Latino- or Hispanic-owned businesses and entrepreneurs, but also the tool, approaches, and policy recommendations necessary to remove those same structural barriers.

The IRA and IIJA will be essential for the transition of the United States to a carbon-free society by 2050. They will also have wide-reaching state and local impacts, including in Michigan.
The 2024 election is an ideal time to examine how current U.S. climate policy is working and what the next few years could look like. For instance, many challenges remain in the implementation of the IRA and the IIJA (e.g., permitting and land use), while the impacts on major industries like automotive manufacturing are still being studied. On September 19, Brookings and the University of Michigan will bring together their policy and research expertise to explore important aspects of recent legislation as well as the future of climate policy in the United States. Please join us for a reception following the program.

The industrial sector that makes all this stuff accounts for 30 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. In this episode, host Samantha Gross talks with Rebecca Dell, senior director for industry at ClimateWorks Foundation, about ways to make the industrial economy—from steel to chemicals to plastics—cleaner.

As we’ve encountered numerous times in past episodes, rural America is full of innovation and home to countless examples of ingenuity. In part two of our special innovators episode, rather than capture the story of a rural place, Tony Pipa hears from rural entrepreneurs who returned to revitalize their hometowns through the boundary-pushing use of agrovoltaics, a worker-owned approach to revitalizing the local textile industry, and business development fueled by narrative change, storytelling, and financing.

In this episode, host Landry Signé interviews Vera Songwe, chair of the board of the Liquidity and Sustainability Facility and a Brookings Africa Growth Initiative nonresident senior fellow, about those opportunities including, as she argues, converting Africa’s assets like the largest carbon sink in the world into financial resources that African countries can invest in growth.
