His death generated years of speculation, including rumors involving members of the Murdaugh family. Speaking openly about his criminal past, sexual behavior, disturbing fantasies and self-described sociopathy, Horsch constructed the public image of a man who seemed to take pride in being viewed as dangerous. At the time, listeners could have dismissed much of this as the calculated performance of an aging underground filmmaker cultivating his own mythology.
