Quick Review: Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition

NitroGamer7 (Jon) 2024-08-03 | This is a quick review of the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, a game recently released for the Nintendo Switch. It’s a nostalgic callback to when Nintendo hosted a tournament that toured a variety of cities back in the 90s. Now, everyone has a chance to participate in speedrun challenges comfort of our own homes through the magic of online gameplay through their Nintendo Switch. The first mode in this game that you’ll find is speedrun Mode – where you’ll play through mainly micro-challenges to complete a challenge as fast as possible. There’s Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, the Super Mario Bros. games, Kirby’s Adventure, Kid Icarus, and more. It’s fairly straight forward – while most of the challenges I found to be pretty easy (even some of the Legendary ones), some are definitely more difficult than others. This mode might keep you busy if you’re really striving for a Rank “S” on every challenge. Otherwise, as long as you get an “A”, you’ll get your “Pin” icon to show to the world and move on.

The next mode - World Championship Mode - gives the player a chance to do five mini-speed runs of different challenges that change every week. This helps keep the game fresh and exciting for something to simply jump into each week.

If you want the silver cup (or go for gold), head on over to Survival Mode. Here you’ll face against other player’s best times from around the world. If you win, you’ll get plenty of coins – which is a nice perk to unlock player icons a little faster.

Overall, if you enjoy speed running games, this game is definitely for you. My only major downside to this game is that there may not be enough content for some players unless you're really striving for a Rank "S" on every level.
