TUTORIAL: DIY Book Light (for under $7) Droi Media 2021-06-02 | If you’ve never heard of a book light, it’s essentially a light bounced off a surface and then through diffusion to create this big, beautiful soft light. And it’s called this because the setup you use - the reflector and the diffusion - looks like you opened a book. We've gotten this request a bunch and even though I don't use book lights in my work I thought I'd give it a shot. So in this video I'm going to walk you through a quick and simple way to make a book light - and the best part? We're doing it all for under $7. Book lights are one of the largest, softest sources of light you can create, so the light that hits your talent or subject is going to wrap around them and produce almost no shadows - which is particularly useful for things like portraits or product shots. Utilizing this method produces some of the best light, BUT, because you’re softening and THEN diffusing, you need a buttload of light to start off with. And this is really only worth doing if you’ve got a hard or directional light that’s really bright and you want a really soft light for your project. This isn’t really a great thing to try and do with like a panel light or a light that’s already a bit softer or diffused. It also requires additional stands and clamps and stuff, so you definitely need extra grip gear to start out with. All the materials you should be able to get locally from your big box home improvement store and a dollar store:- 4x4 insulation panel (these come in 4x8 panels for ~$13)- knife- tape measure / ruler- pencil or marker- a thin white material for diffusion (I’m using a white plastic tablecloth from the dollar store but you could use a white sheet or a white shower curtain)- gaffers tape- staplerDIY reflectors: youtu.be/c3Ke2bf5mzIDIY quacker clamps: youtu.be/D2ZEuiZ07HYPros:- insanely inexpensive- you can easily stack and clamp these two together for storage or transportation- you don't need any fancy equipment to use them, just some light stands and a few spring clampsCons:- the diffusion panel is SUPER flimsy - it’s not professional looking *** Video Sections ***00:00 - Intro00:09 - Background Info01:38 - Materials List02:20 - Assembly04:02 - Using Your Book Light04:45 - Closing ThoughtsSome alternatives:5-in-1 reflector - use the outer case of the reflector stretched between two light stands as the reflector, and the sheer in panel as the diffusion. This lavalier trick is a GAME CHANGER Droi Media 2021-04-01 | Lavalier, lav, or lapel mics are really common in the video production and filmmaking industries. They are small, lightweight, easy to use, and allow hands-free operation for the person wearing them. And if the majority of your freelance video production work revolves around interviews or testimonials then you almost undoubtedly use a lavalier microphone. These come in both wired, and wireless varieties. I do a lot of testimonial-based videos and some documentary work, and lavs are always in my kit.Typically we clip these to a tie, shirt lapel, or collar, and in most of these instances, you’ll want the cable hidden so it looks clean and professional. Traditionally this is done by having the talent wind the cable up through their shirt, but in this video I wanted to share a method I’ve been using for years that is really a game-changer for scenarios where the talent has their shirt tucked in, doesn’t have a collar, or has a flimsier fabric on. And all you’ll need to do it is one of those little binder clips. With this method you can mic your talent up much quicker, there’s no need for tucking and untucking shirts, it’s super handy for less sturdy fabrics that might awkwardly droop or hang otherwise, and it reduces the amount of handing and jostling around your mics might be subjected to.Do you have any sweet lav tricks? TUTORIAL: DIY Apple Boxes Droi Media 2020-06-19 | Apple boxes are a staple on film and video sets, and for good reason. They are indispensable pieces of grip equipment - from adjusting the height of gear and actors to providing a seat for crew - they are one of the more versatile and useful pieces of equipment you can have in your kit. A set consists of 4 different sizes - a full, a half, a quarter, and a pancake - and usually retails for over $100 - but today we’re making an entire set of our own, for around $30. (Spoiler: you will actually have enough wood to make 6 boxes.)This tutorial is based around 1 4’ x 8’ ½” sheet of plywood, but to make it manageable you'll want to cut it in into two 4' x '4 pieces. If you're a YouTuber or a Vlogger this is an absolutely perfect solution for monitoring yourself while filming. If your camera already has a screen that flips all the way around then it's probably not for you. There's honestly not a ton to say about this mirror, and there are very few downsides to it, because it's such a specific product for a specific audience and it does what it needs to really well. And in the past few years the size and cost of them has come down dramatically, making them easily accessible even for hobbyists. And while the smaller single handed ones might be easy to use there can actually be some stability issues because of that single handle. It's cheap, easy to use, and perfect for monitoring your camera's screen if it doesn't flip up.My Sony a6300, which I film all my YouTube videos with, doesn’t have a flip up screen, so I’ve got a small external monitor on another clamp and arm. Most newer cameras have flip out or flip up screens though so you likely won’t need that, but if you do need an external monitor it will connect just like the camera and the microphone with a second nanoclamp and extension arm, and I recommend the little Ikan one above - it accepts 4k signal and is a great budget friendly option.While everything on the stand is battery powered you could easily plug everything in for some added reliability while filming, and in fact I usually power everything through an extension cord so I have one less thing to worry about when I’m making a video. To keep the setup clean all my cords are secured to the light stand with my DIY cable ties, and if you need everything can get folded up when not in use.This is an easy to use setup and can be moved around quickly - for me this was important since I regularly film in various places around my house or garage. Everything on this setup is fully adjustable, from the height of the stand, the position of the camera and microphone, and even the brightness and color temperature of the light. TUTORIAL: DIY Filters (for your matte box) Droi Media 2020-01-24 | I recently got the Tilta Mini Matte Box and while I am really enjoying it so far I think one of the issues a lot of us are going to have is that while an entry level matte box like this might only be $100, a decent 4x5.65” ND filter can cost $200 or more, and if you want a set of them you could easily spend nearly $1,000 on that set.
