Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism - Extra Stage (No Commentary)
updated
This is a bit of an interesting one for my channel, and for a single script here. All in all, it does play essentially like a Touhou game. In that, you're playing as a character with a small hitbox who can move anywhere on the field while a boss shoots a slew of bullets at you. However mechanically, there's many small differences here (for obvious reasons) that make this stand out from the norm. All in all, it's not too difficult, but it is something you'll definitely have to get used to, since ultimately the movement and attacking is more of a cross between Touhou and The Legend of Zelda.

Biten ultimately takes a little getting used to, and she's gonna feel odd compared to what you've done before. She's a fast character, but she's really not powerful at all, having a weak shot, weak charge shot and weak Level 2. Her biggest strength however is her wide reaching attacks, and making the most of your aura. Your aura covers a lot of ground (but nothing close by, so keep that in mind) so it's quite simple to tame most, if not every beast spirit on the field. After that however, despite her weak power, it's quite simple to blast any tamed spirit, potentially racking up significant combos and dropping a bunch of crap on your opponent.

Yuuma's one of the more unique characters, since strictly speaking she's not all that good, but makes up for it with her special moves. Both her movement speed and shot power are a little below average, not enough to really stand out, but not nearly as bad as the slowest or weakest characters. Her aura is also kinda special in that the thing just keeps growing, though in practice you generally won't use it to get too crazy big.
The most special thing about Yuuma however is her charge shots, cause she essentially takes Yachie's defensive aura and turns it into an offensive move. Her Level 1 move is a close-range spork swing (and Level 2 is the same, though it covers half the field) but when she does so, she deals good damage and erases almost every attack. Unlike Yachie who doesn't get spirits or EX attacks, here there's pretty much a single digit number of things Yuuma can't eat in one or two bites.

Saki is simple, if not a bit uncontrollable to play as. She's one of those characters who ends up being so fast she can be hard to control if you're not used to it. Beyond that though, she's a fairly straightforward character. Her shots all fire straight ahead with piercing lasers, her charge shot is more of that, and her Level 2 is just even more of that.

Yachie's a unique character in that she has an extremely defensive playstyle compared to the others. As you'd expect, she's incredibly slow, but has a quick to activate aura and good shot power. However the biggest thing about her is the fact that her Level 1 and Level 2 charge shots aren't offensive at all, rather instead they set up a temporary shield around you that deletes any and all bullets that make contact with it. This can be very good for general survivability, or just invalidating some spells with how far reaching the Level 2 is.

All in all, this is a tough, but manageable script. More than anything the biggest challenge is just everything you'll need to keep in mind, what with the variety on display here. Since as the title suggests, this is a back to back boss rush against the entire Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom crew. So you're gonna have to learn the spells for Seiran, Ringo, Doremy, Sagume, Clownpiece, Junko and Hecatia. On top of the fact that this script is quite challenging by itself as well.
Thankfully you are given plenty of options for practice against all these spells. Under “Single” you can find every single non-spell and spell card in the script to practice against, or if you go under “Plural” you can fight the entire set of a choice boss.

Mamizou's a unique one to play as, though nature of the beast, her “uniqueness” isn't something I'm really gonna show off to its full extent in my videos. Generally speaking, she's purely average, if not a little below average. Shot-wise, her power level is a bit lower than I'd like, and her unfocused shot is a spread shot while focused is more condensed. Then her charge shot is just a somewhat more powerful spread-shot as well.
However, the biggest thing that makes her stand out is her Level 2 charge. It actually takes a lot longer to pull it off compared to other characters. It doesn't attack anything on your side of the field, or to your opponent. But what it does is give you a bomb piece, and if you get three of them you just get a bomb for free. You can see how I wouldn't really showcase that to its full extent in my videos, but you can see how that could get very effective. For anyone else, that's a finite resource, but for Mamizou she can just freely replenish any bombs she uses.

Tsukasa's ultimately a bit of a tricky character to play as. Since she's less about power or speed and more about messing with the opponent more than anything. Alone, her speed is a little above average, and her shot power is strong enough to be manageable, though said shots are very constrained. Though she also has the benefit that her shots go behind her as well.
Her aura however doesn't really cover ahead of her, it covers to the sides. Not the end of the world, but definitely takes a little getting used to. That does go good with her charge shot however, which fires to the left and right, as well as up & down. However, the deadliest thing about Tsukasa is her Level 2 spell. That will completely erase every small bullet on your side of the field, and send them over to the opponent's side, but bigger.

This script... is absolutely nuts... in more ways than one. First, a couple links to help provide context. The first is the Touhou wiki article on “Reverb Boy” and the second is the original meme video he came from

Now as for the script itself, the biggest rule of thumb is to expect anything and everything. Because lord, this script throws it all at you and is incredibly random to boot. Frankly, at first glance you'd think this were a troll script that I'd hand my editor to play on April Fools. But no, it's just incredibly difficult, with the craziest subject matter I've seen since I played any of the old “McRoll” scripts. This script is very punishing, but it does have a surprisingly generous resource system, so it kinda balances out. Beyond that though, spell practice is your friend more than anything. Especially since all in all, there is A LOT of spells to this script. Many of which are definitely doable with enough practice, but altogether, this is one hell of an endurance gauntlet.

Rin ultimately isn't too bad to play as, and kinda plays like a cross between Seiran & Nazrin more than anything. She's got good shot power, and a projectile aura. But her game plan is just like Nazrin where she excels at taming and blasting spirits.
Her charge shot is kinda meh, it's a piercing projectile that she fires ahead just like her aura, but it really doesn't deal that much damage, and you can essentially get the same results just firing your normal shot. Her Level 2 however fires three of them, which does good damage, but the real meat of it is that it also releases a wave that tames every spirit on the field. Doing so at the right time can lead to very effective combos that can clear out a lot of stuff from your side of the field, and drop a slew of stuff over to your opponent.

Seiran is more clear cut, and more of a standard character to play as compared to what's come before her (honestly, she plays more like Marisa than anything). Her main shot is direct and strong, plus it leaves a lingering explosion where it hit. Her charge shot is also amazing, basically just being a lot more of that. Simple, but it can deal massive damage if you use it up close/rapidly to shotgun bosses
She does have a few negatives however, her Level 2 instead is a burst of random missiles from all over from the back of the field... which ultimately don't do much damage. Secondly her aura's a little weird and takes some getting used to. It appears disjointed from her, a bit ahead of her. So the aura is where your shots are going, but you need to be aware you can't catch any spirits that get too close to you.

This script is a little bit on the tricky side, but ultimately not too difficult once you know what you're getting into. There's a few spells in particular you really wanna watch out for, but they're the type of things that'll only really kill you once, once you know ahead of time where not to be. Ultimately, Hikariko is about as difficult, if not a bit easier in this outing than she was back in Hollow Song of Birds. This script is essentially on the easier side of Normal difficulty.

Nazrin is incredibly difficult to play as, plain, pure and simple. In a nutshell, she effectively plays with the same game plan as Sanae did, though she doesn't really execute it quite as well. Her main shot is direct but really not that strong, and her charge shot is a stronger blast... but it's a straightforward homing blast. And as you've seen with previous characters, homing shots in the game won't always go where you expect/to the needed target.
To make up for it, it seems the intention is to use your aura coupled with her Level 2 charge. Her aura is unique compared to the previous ones, cause this doesn't stay on you, it's actually a projectile that homes in on spirits. Her Level 2 charge then doesn't deal any damage, however what it does do is create a screen-wide wave that destroys any tamed spirits on the field. It is effective when it goes off... but that's really all Nazrin's got going for her.

Aunn is... very tricky to play as, or very easy to play as, depending on how you look at it. Mainly being, really the best thing about her is having a really standard, and powerful enough shot. Which is good, cause that's really all she's got going for her.
Her aura is like Sanae's, it comes out with a delay but covers a wide range (actually a bit wider), but to make up for the much wider range, it snaps shut into a really small oval right after activating. But the problem with Aunn is that her charge shots really aren't up to snuff here. Sanae could effortlessly blast everything around her, and Aunn's charge shots cover everything around her as well, but in many cases if there was a lot of stuff around me, I couldn't actually use it to guarantee I'd actually destroy everything.

Ran's a bit more complex to play as compared to what's come before her, but ultimately she's a _very_ strong character. Her aura's similar to Sanae, but with pros and cons. It's fairly large and is focused around her, and it comes out instantly this time to boot, however it's cross shaped, so there's blind spots in your diagonals.
Her shots are condensed, but a straightforward normal shot, and her charge shot is basically the same shots, but a touch stronger. Her Level 2 is essentially more of the same as well, but stronger, since it does the same thing, but from four shikigami options instead of two. But this effect also temporarily changes your main shot to four options as well, including affecting your Level 1 charge. Meaning while this is active, Ran's Level 1 charge shots are now _incredibly_ powerful, and quick to fire again and again.
Lastly, she has a unique mechanic where if you press the focus button, she leaves her options in place so you can deal damage there, and go dodge elsewhere. Personally, I didn't find much use for it though, and you won't see much of it here. It felt more like a detriment in practice, whereas I got more mileage keeping them on me and just dealing as much damage as I could, as quick as possible.

Sanae's ultimately a particularly difficult one to play as with how her shots work. Strictly speaking, she's not “weak” per say, however Sanae works like how she does as a normal playable character, in that her main shot is her homing snakes that turn at 90 degree angles to home at enemies horizontally. Problem is with the sheer number of enemies constantly on the screen, very often the bulk of your shots are getting aimed away from the stuff in front of you (especially bosses).
Her aura and charge shots are also not terribly good for dealing condensed damage either. Her aura is shaped like Reimu's, but larger. However it comes out with a delay. But then her charge shot is a wide blast of her homing bullets in all directions. Potentially good damage, but they may not all go where you want them to. Similarly, her Level 2 is now exploding frogs in all directions. It'll basically blast every single beast you've tamed in your large aura, but not much else...

This script is a difficult one, but only in certain parts. All in all, it's more that the difficulty goes all over the place (to an extreme amount). For most of the script, it's honestly not too bad to learn what's coming and how to properly dodge it, however there's a couple spells in particular where the difficulty ramps up immensely compared to everything else.

Marisa's similar to your traditional Marisa, and very similar to how she was in PoFV, like how Reimu was. She's got condensed shots, but they're stronger, and she's faster than Reimu was. Her aura also extends in a single vertical line across the field from her position, which pairs well with her charge shot, which is a single large piercing laser.
Her Level 2 however, while quite good in VS mode, you won't see much use out of it here. It's purely offensive, and just throws a slew of lasers onto the opponents side. Good for tripping up a _human_ opponent. But when dealing with an AI that dodges practically everything, and your end goal is surviving until she fires her unique boss spell, it's kinda a waste of energy to use.

As a result of the markets opening up, all ownership of the ancient land has returned to nothing.

Reimu's both your average player, as well as a good beginner player. She's got homing bullets for an unfocused shot and stronger, more condenses needles for focused. Her aura's particularly small though, and focused exclusively around her, so it's pretty exclusively a defensive option.
Her charge shot's a spread shot of talismans, which can hit a slew of enemies, however honestly I found it particularly weak, and didn't kill as much as I'd like. Her Level 2 charge however is absolutely crazy, since it both deals damage and clears out bullets at the same time, essentially functioning like a small, rechargeable bomb.

All in all, this is a bit of a tricky script, but not too difficult. In the same vein as the other “every loves _____” scripts, this too has characters pulling off moves inspired by the player character. However, since the player this time is Sakuya, the attacks are a bit more tricky this time around, cause it means everyone gets to stop time for this script.

_But right now, the inside of it is totally air-filled._
Similar logic to the previous market, the stage difficulty cranks up here as well. However with that, it was only choice waves that were particularly difficult. Here it's just the opposite where it's only choice waves that are on the easier side. Like the 4th Market, it's all about two enemy waves showing up at once, however you get big fairies in this market. Personally a good rule of thumb was to try and get as much bullet money as I could on the first three waves, since after that, there's no guarantee you can safely get large sums from the large fairies, what with the types of enemy groups that could come in alongside them.

Kisume's a little tricky, but ultimately not too bad once you know what you're getting yourself into. She can definitely catch you off guard, since not only will she lunge at you _a lot_ (namely, for all of her non-spells) but she's also got a bunch of unique mechanics to many of her spells as well. Time stopping, lasers that activate & deactivate when you focus & unfocus, colored auras that affect bullets of the same color, etc. The attacks ultimately aren't too difficult once you know what you're getting yourself into, but likely will catch you off guard the first time you face them.

At this point in time, the difficulty of the stage itself increases significantly. At first when you play it, it won't seem too bad, however after the first three waves, choice fairy groups start to be significantly more difficult than what you've dealt with before. That difficulty also comes from the fact that the stage itself has gotten longer as well, now up to seven waves long. All in all, you're gonna wanna focus more on survivability than anything at this point, on top of what you've been doing before.

To a degree, this market's pretty much a test on what you've learned in the past few markets. There's no large fairies to deal with, however all the enemy patterns are comprised of two different enemy groups from the previous markets. It changes the challenge around for a lot of them, cause now what may have been one enemy group having a simple strategy, you may get a conflicting enemy pattern coming alongside it (such as one enemy group wanting you to stream, but another wanting you to stay put). Biggest thing to watch out for however is with the enemies spread out like this, it's very easy for choice enemies to fire off horizontal or from behind attacks that can catch you off guard while your attention is somewhere else.

This is a very detailed script with a lot of custom content that went into it. All in all though, it's not actually too difficult, and you're given A LOT of resources that make your life easier. The stage itself isn't too bad, and you can take out the lot of the fairies by making sure you shoot them down before they're given a chance to fire. The mid-boss is a little tough, but ultimately goes down pretty simple once you know what you're getting into. Similar case for the boss herself, however her penultimate spell in particular you really need to watch out for.

The 2nd Market was essentially your free chance to learn about the cards, since enemies and bullets were sparse, but bullet groups were dense. Here, it's not exactly the traditional “difficulty spike” of the game, but at this point you are gonna have to work for it. Enemy waves get denser, without getting so dense that you're gonna make tons of money off them. Similarly, large fairies that used to be “Ha ha, free money” are now gonna be throwing some surprise “Oh shit!” moves at you. Also at this point, you're gonna have to focus more on actually dodging the bosses' attacks, as opposed to trying to squeeze as much bullet money out of them as well.

Flandre & Marx here are tough, and are definitely gonna take some practice to deal with. Generally speaking, a lot of the attacks will consist of a very direct attack, usually coming from Flandre, with another, almost hidden sneak attack coming from Marx. Get into the groove of figuring out the best way to avoid the former attack while minimally paying attention to it, so you can then focus on the secondary attack without getting caught off guard.

If the 1st Market was primarily made for getting used to the game's mechanics, then the 2nd Market is made for getting used to the cards themselves. The stages here are VERY easy to make bullet money on (and grind funds on too, chief fairies are _loaded_) and quite often you can go into the markets and buy all three cards that you can, and still have money left over. Very good for experimenting with the full effects of a full play-set of cards, or just seeing what combinations you like.

For all intents and purposes the 1st Market is more about letting you learn the mechanics of the game more than anything. As such, aside from Nemuno (who may take you a bit to come across in the first place) a majority of what's gonna get thrown at you is generally warm-up type stuff, and not too difficult even with the new stuff you can do.

Banette here's a bit of an odd one, but ultimately not too bad (if not a little bit on the easier side). There's a wide variety of attacks here, but everything goes down so quick, it's not too hard to quickly react to what's coming your way, and end the spell before things get too difficult.

Playing as Yuuma's a tricky one because of her mobility. She's kinda like the mentality you need with Murasa, except Yuuma _really_ doesn't have the range and power to make up for it. Yuuma's attacks are all fairly close range, and she doesn't fly, she _only_ leaps around. Positioning with her is very important, since you're pretty much gonna have two options going into every fight. Either play it safe, hang back and attack when you get an opening. Or if there's too much on screen, you need to get hyper aggressive, doing a combo of mid-air attacks (jump, up-attack, down-attack, jump as soon as you hit the ground) to keep grazing everything. But if you do that, keep a close eye on your stamina, you'll need to find free moments to get away and recover it.

Seija's tricky, but very much doable. She has a large variety of attacks, but soon as you understand what's coming your way, you should have no problem dealing with it. All in all that's the biggest thing. Seija being who she is, has quite a few non-standard attacks. But it's not too confounding, and with a bit of practice, you can easilly understand what you'll have to do to dodge what comes your way.

Playing as Flandre is not unlike Joon in the “back to basics” style, at least when it comes to combat alone. She's got great and simple mobility with a _wide_ reaching melee attack that combos really well into a constant stream of whaling on the opponent. She does have a ranged attack this time, though it's a bit situational however. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that Flandre's always lunging forward when she's attacking, she never stays put so you keep needing to adjust your position (and make sure you're not attacking straight into a threat).
Though the biggest thing to keep in mind with Flandre isn't her combat or mobility. Rather it's the fact that she's a vampire, and as such, unlike everyone else she can't collect the water that pools up around the battlefield. Rather, the button you press for absorbing water, you now use for _destroying_ water, because Flandre will get hurt if she gets too wet.

Ran's a bit of a tricky one with a wide variety of attacks. Fortunately, you as well have a variety of attacks too that you can swap between. That's ultimately the goal of this script. This fight is heavily balanced around figuring out which shot-type is the best one for each situation.

Playing as Joon is a bit more of a “back to basics” considering what's come between Reimu and now. She is completely lacking for good ranged attacks, but can maneuver around very well, and has very good melee attacks. The gimmick behind her is that as she fights, oil spreads out around the battlefield, not water. Unlike the others, she doesn't get slowed by the oil, rather instead she can ignite it, strengthening her melee attacks. Beyond that, you've also got Shion, who you can literally use as a shield to guard against small bullets to automatically absorb them into charging your spell card.

Eanaro's a tough one to deal with, on multiple fronts. Biggest one is his mobility. He's gonna be moving around all over the place, and you too will have to as well. Thankfully though, you are given the tools to deal with that. Also keep in mind, bullets are dense here, and honestly kinda hard to see at times. This script definitely went for the Undertale style of all white bullets, but with traditional Touhou-styled bullet density.

Murasa is frankly, the hardest character to play as. Hands down. She is very slow and very clunky. But when she hits, good lord does she hit like a truck. Murasa has, by far the slowest movement speed in the game, however to make up for that, she uses her anchor essentially like a grappling hook. So for a lot of cases, your general strategy is to zip in, deal some massive damage, and get out before you get clocked with an attack you can't graze.

Yuyuko's ultimately not too bad here, so long as you keep your wits about you. She has some tricky moves, but for the most part it's mainly just understanding that a majority of her butterfly attacks will spread out into lines, and preemptively seeing where the gaps will appear from there.

While Marisa's a bit similar, albeit a remix of what Reimu could do, Kanako is _completely_ different. The biggest thing is that she lacks melee attacks completely, relying entirely by spawning tornadoes or throwing onbashira's around. That being said, playing as Kanako is like playing with noclip enabled. Soon as you understand what she's capable of, she ends up being probably the most brain dead character to play as in this entire game.

Artia is a tough one here, this is definitely an “Extra Stage Boss” tier boss fight. For many of her attacks, it's important to keep in mind you can't play it passively and simply react to what she's firing at you. You'll need to be aggressive because of the way her attacks spread out, making it so you'll essentially be “buried” if you hang out too far away from her. Beyond that, also keep in mind she's got a few attacks that require specific maneuvering, so much so that you'll likely get blasted if you go in blind. Understand that this script has Spell Practice, and Spell Practice is your friend.

Marisa's similar to Reimu, but ultimately a bit stiffer. Largely you can still do a lot of the same strategies however (since you can still dash horizontally and vertically, and can damage enemies at the same time). She's got significantly better ranged attacks than Reimu, but they're kinda situational to use them exclusively at range considering the nature of this game. That being said, you can still use them essentially as melee attacks to get pretty good results all things considered.

This is your traditional “Satori Recollection” script. It's definitely a challenging thing, the creator isn't going easy on you here with some of these spell choices. At the same time however, cause of the nature of it ya kinda know what's coming ahead of time. So by its very nature of it, you've essentially already practiced for many of these attacks.

Black water gushed out onto the surface. The water released an odd odour, and was hard to get off once stuck to one's body. It was not something that you could use as your everyday water.
Some saw the gushing water as misfortune, some as good fortune; some saw it as holy, while others as evil; some saw it as a natural disaster, some saw it as a business opportunity, various theories were tossed around. Some even started a festival and made a fuss.
But not long after, an event occurred that put a horrific damper on their buoyant moods. From the springs that they drank from, the beautiful clear streams, the hot springs at rest spots... from every location it possibly could, the black water began to gush out.

Ultimately, Reimu's your average character, and easiest to play as. Good ranged attacks, good melee attacks & good aerial attacks. Not as great as some characters, but not as bad as others either. Ultimately her biggest strength is she doesn't need to worry about her stamina near as much with her practically free air-dodges, plus she can attack while grazing bullets at the same time.

A fun, but not too difficult full script, featuring a stage, a couple mid-bosses and a short boss fight. The stage itself may get a little tiring with how much streaming you're expected to do, but it's not bad with practice. Then Byakuren herself isn't too bad for the majority of the fight, just watch out for what she pulls off for the last two attacks.

Well... there's one major difference between these Overdrives and the Last Words from TSS. Those started hard and stayed hard, with a difficulty curve that was more like a plateau. These however... apparently despite how crazy the last batch was, Team Dream Compass did manage to make even harder spells... for better or for worse...

Welcome to the Overdrive spells, also known as the corner where the crazy difficulty of this game is hidden off on. Emphasis on hidden, since you can't actually access these cards the normal way. The Overdrive cards have an unlock condition like you'd expect, but you're not explicitly told what that unlock condition is.
I'll go over that in full detail in the video. But for now, just know that the Overdrive spell cards range from “not bad” to “absolutely hellish”. In all honesty, the hardest ones suffer from similar things I complained about in The Shatters Sky's Last Words. Some of these spells I feel suffer from a bad case of over reliance on RNG and may have poor visibility to boot. There's a good number of instances where you've got a moderately difficult spell, but the actual difficulty/cause of death is a random cluster of bullets thrown on top of it. Problem is, you kinda have to hope and pray for good RNG that the densest clusters aren't near you, cause said randomness can make the difficulty of the spell sway DRASTICALLY.
