The Computer is Mysterious and Important: Apple TVs Severance and My 1986 Kaypro The Grain Doctor 2025-05-04 | I own a vintage 1986 Kapro 1 CP/M computer that I inherited from my father in 1989. He had used the machine in an effort to write a novel about his experiences as an embedded journalist in the Vietnam War. In 2014, in an effort to recover those writings, I came up with a method to connect the Kaypro to my @Apple Macbook Pro through a series of adapter cables. Through this connection, I was able to fool the Kaypro into thinking the MacBook was a printer, so I could "print" the word processing documents and capture the output on the Mac side. I filmed the process in 2014, but couldn't think of a way to present it in a way that would be at all interesting to anyone other than myself.Fast forward to 2025, more than a decade later, and I became obsessed with the @AppleTV show "Severance," created by Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller. Several months ago, I saw an interview with Ben Stiller and Adam Scott on @TheVerge, where Ben mentioned that the design inspiration for the retro MDR workstations came from the Rhode Island Computer Museum (@RIComputerMuseum) While I have not yet visited the museum, I have been a Rhode Islander (literal and now honorary) for the past 19 years). Wiring a VFD/Phase Converter for my 1958 Logan Model 200 Metal Lathe The Grain Doctor 2024-11-24 | The setup I used to power the 1/2 Horsepower 3-Phase AC Motor that came with my 1958 Logan Model 200 metal lathe. I got the lathe at an auction in 2018, reassembled and rehabbed it in 2023, and finally got around to powering it up now (late 2024).I have previously used sealed IP 67 VFD units, but in an effort to save money, I got an ATO drive off of Amazon. The quality seems pretty good, but given my dusty shop and the fact that this is on a metalworking machine (i.e. oil and metal shavings everywhere), I had to put it in an enclosure. Respecting the manufacturer's recommendations for clearance around the drive, I ended up with a very large box. How to Replace the Tires on a Large Northfield Bandsaw The Grain Doctor 2023-10-01 | When I got my 1980 Northfield 32” bandsaw, it was in great shape, but the tires were likely the original factory versions. It is easy to order a new set of endless urethane tires from Northfield Machinery, and they include the recommended epoxy. I did need to get an epoxy applicator gun and tips from Amazon. The instructions from Northfield suggest using four people to stretch the tire onto the wheel. As I am an adult, I don’t have four friends that I can call on a whim. I ended up using my steam bending table (build from free @LeeValleyTools plans) to get the tire on solo. It ended up working quite well. Pulling a Stump with my Homemade Mobile Gantry Crane The Grain Doctor 2023-04-23 | I was doing some spring cleanup yardwork, and cut out an overgrown Moonrose bush that was choking out a bunch of other trees. I cut the bush out and chipped it with my @harborfreight chipper, but needed to get the stump out. It wasn't anywhere that I could get my truck to try to pull it out (and I've seen enough fail videos to know not to do it anyway). To help with mechanical advantage, I enlisted The Cranebow, my gantry crane that I built a number of years ago. It worked like a charm, allowing me to get to the main root and ultimately cut it deep down. Blocking up the crane off the wheels could have given me even more countertraction, but it was a fine line of pulling hard, but not too hard (didn't want it to fail catastrophically while I was right next to it).It's vertical video because I intended it to be a short, but forgot those are limited to 60 seconds. Import Apple Cash Transactions Into Quicken or Mint.com (CSV Format) The Grain Doctor 2023-02-12 | @Apple Card and Apple Cash are great new(er) tools, but have some limitations when it comes to tracking the transactions in your financial software (@Quicken for Mac in my case). The Apple Card only lets you download a QFX file when your statement comes due, and as of today (2/12/2023), the only way I have found to get transaction data from your Apple Cash charges is to manually request a PDF statement through the Wallet app.Being an obsessive tracker of financial data, this was not going to cut it for me. Affordable Apple AirPlay 2 Compatible Ceiling Speakers The Grain Doctor 2022-05-27 | We recently moved into a newly constructed house. The builder did a fantastic job, and went so far as to wire nearly every room for ceiling speakers. He installed a power outlet with each pair, and ran high quality speaker wire between the openings. In the upstairs, he also ran home-run wires to a closet for a more centralized system. Due to supply chain issues, he wasn't able to get the speakers he wanted, which turned out to be a good thing for me. I took the credit on the purchase price and designed the system myself. We are fairly entrenched in the Apple ecosystem at my house, and I wanted speakers that were AirPlay 2 compatible, so I could stream the same thing to multiple speakers throughout the house, or pick and choose. Based on my research, the options for ceiling speakers with AirPlay capability is quite limited. A company in the UK makes a product that claims to be the only option in the world, but they cost over $600 a pair.I found the @belkin SoundForm Connect Adapter that features AirPlay 2 compatibility, with headphone and digital optical audio outputs. The @monopricecom Caliber speakers feature a RCA input in addition to built-in Bluetooth, which fit the bill perfectly.I initially connected the SoundForm Connect to the speakers using a headphone jack to RCA adapter, but it seems that the headphone jack on the SoundForm in underpowered, and the max volume was rather low. I replaced this with a digital optical to RCA adapter, and the improvement was impressive.I use a WiFi plug for all the components so that they don't have to be powered for the 98% of the time I am not using them.@amazon @Apple I hope someone finds this useful. Making Googly Eyes For a Ford F-150 Powerboost using 3-D Printing and Epoxy The Grain Doctor 2022-02-19 | It started with a TikTok I saw where someone put giant googly eyes on a piece of industrial machinery. I had recently upgraded my minivan a Ford F-150 Powerboost hybrid pickup truck, and It was all downhill from there.The eyes were store-bought from Amazon. I designed mounts for the eyes and a silly mouth in @adskFusion. The mouth is meant to be reminiscent of a dog hanging its head out the window of a car, with the Ford logo being his nose. I made the mount points separate parts that are printed on their own. This was done so that the layer lines were oriented in such a way to maximize strength and avoid any shearing planes. SawStop Table Saw Crosscut Sled Fence Extension using Reclaimed Materials The Grain Doctor 2022-01-04 | I designed and built an over-engineered crosscut sled for my @SawStop PCS table saw back in 2014. As part of the sled, I included T-tracks in the fence so I could incorporate stops for repeatable cuts. When I was building my outfeed table for the saw (based off of @downtoearthwoodworks videos), I needed to make some long repeatable cuts. And thus, this project was born. I used the remnants of an old workbench that I had dismantled and made an over-engineered fence extension that could accommodate the longer pieces.I did this project in late 2016, did a rough cut in iMovie at that time, but then switched over to Premiere Pro. Quick Lego Minifig Face Animation Tutorial Using Mecabricks and Blender The Grain Doctor 2021-07-23 | I have been using @Mecabricks for @LEGO animation due to its amazing @BlenderOfficial import feature. I wanted to be able to do simple face animations, but wasn’t finding an easy way. There is what appears to be an amazing add-in to Blender called “MecaFace”, but I didn’t want to dive that deep. Fortunately, I found a video (linked below) that showed generally how to animate textures using Nodes, and I was able to adapt it to the models that are imported using the Mecabricks Blender Importer. I hope someone finds it useful!This technique allows you to easily use keyframes in the animation timeline to change the face on your Minifig characters. Reliably Make Square and Straight Cuts on Large Diameter PVC Plumbing Pipes The Grain Doctor 2021-03-06 | I have long had dreams of a utility sink in my basement shop, which would eliminate the need for me to go upstairs to wash my hands, clean paintbrushes, etc. I finally got around to doing it, which involved plumbing in a utility pump to get the effluent into the main drain coming from my kitchen island. My initial attempt to splice in to the pipe using repair unions and PVC glue did not work well, and immediately began to leak. I needed to replace the whole section and use rubber repair sleeves. This required as square cuts on the old pipe as possible, and I ended up coming up with this method - I thought if it independently, but of course, others have likely had the same idea in the past. Other options include using hose clamps or zip ties, but I find this method to be a bit more effective.
