Country officials convene to align country priorities and needs in the Asia-Pacific region Global Environment Facility 2025-09-15 | The GEF OFP Regional Training Workshop and Asia Pacific Constituency Meeting took place in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, on May 13-16, 2025. Both events brought together 14 countries from the Asia-Pacific Region, including: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Timor Leste, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Philippines, Indonesia.ABOUT FOCAL POINTSEach Global Environment Facility recipient country designates two officials to interact with the GEF: the Political Focal Point (PFP) and the Operational Focal Point (OFP).The OFP is a government official appointed by a GEF recipient country, who acts as the main point of contact for GEF activities. The OFP ensures the coherence of GEF interventions with national environmental priorities by working and coordinating with relevant ministries, Convention focal points, and diverse stakeholders. The OFP also works with GEF Agencies in the design, implementation, oversight, and closure of GEF projects. As the GEF’s principal government liaisons, OFPs play a critical role in aligning GEF investments with their countries’ environmental strategies and objectives and their commitments under the Multilateral Environmental Agreements for which GEF serves as a financial mechanism. Highlights from the opening of the 69th GEF Council meeting | Work program approval Global Environment Facility 2025-06-03 | A wide-ranging Global Environment Facility work program approved on June 2, 2025 will support a new “Lemur bond” for biodiversity and resilience in Madagascar; scale up efforts to remove mercury from skin creams and the production of non-ferrous metals and cement; strengthen cooperation across four international waterways; and connect microfinance with environmentally-focused ventures in developing countries.The $195 million allocated by the GEF Council will generate $2.6 billion from outside sources. That is equal to $13 mobilized for every GEF dollar.In total, the latest GEF Trust Fund work program includes 14 initiatives that will take place in 35 countries, nearly half of which are Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States. These efforts will enable the GEF partnership to meet its targets to enable the cooperative management of 40 shared water ecosystems, and to restore 10 million hectares of land and ecosystems in the current four-year funding period. Meeting as the GEF Council, LDCF/SCCF Council, and GBFF Council, member countries will also review progress towards global environmental goals and hear from the heads of the multilateral environmental conventions that the GEF serves, as well as from the Independent Evaluation Office and Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel. The Council, the Global Environment Facility's main governing body, comprises 32 members appointed by constituencies of GEF member countries (14 from developed countries, 16 from developing countries, and two from economies in transition). Council members rotate at different intervals determined by each constituency. iCOAST program to boost sustainable tourism in 14 countries Global Environment Facility 2024-12-18 | The Global Environment Facility Council approved in December 2024 an exciting sustainable tourism initiative that will be led by the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The ultimate goal of the iCOAST (Integrated Collaborative Approaches to Sustainable Tourism) program is to reduce pollution of water, soil, and air; reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses; reduce the over-consumption of natural resources, products, and materials; and reverse the tourism sector’s impact on biodiversity loss, while creating equitable livelihoods and jobs for local communities.iCOAST will be implemented by the Inter-American Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, UN Food and Agriculture Organization, UNDP, UN Environment Programme, UN Industrial Development Organization, and WWF, in collaboration with UN Tourism, the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions, and Minamata Convention on Mercury secretariats and other partners. Spotlight on GEF programs in Latin America and the Caribbean Global Environment Facility 2024-10-17 | The Global Environment Facility has been working in the Latin America and Caribbean region for almost 30 years to protect and conserve biodiversity. Over $5 billion has been invested in the region, resulting in integrated programming and significant impact. Programs such as the Amazon Region Protected Areas program and the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Integrated Program work with Indigenous Peoples and local communities to protect resources through sustainable management. The Beyond 30x30 program in the Eastern Tropical Pacific creates corridors to link protected areas and ensure safe passage for endangered species. Latin America and the Caribbean biodiversity support Global Environment Facility 2024-10-17 | The Latin America and Caribbean region is home to a significant amount of biodiversity, but it is under threat from climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution. 67th GEF Council meeting: Momentum for people and the planet Global Environment Facility 2024-06-25 | The 67th meeting of the GEF Council, the 36th meeting of the Least Developed Countries Fund/Special Climate Change Fund (LDCF/SCCF) Council, and the 2nd meeting of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) Council concluded their deliberations on a heavy agenda. The closing sessions for each Council meeting confirmed the decisions taken throughout the four days of meetings.Key decisions taken by the Councils included the first ever work program for the newly established GBFF, which includes three projects for a total of $37.82 million. The largest ever LDCF work program, in the amount of $203 million, includes projects and programs across 20 countries. Record Least Developed Countries Fund support for climate change adaptation Global Environment Facility 2024-06-21 | At the 36th Council meeting of the Least Developed Countries Fund/Special Climate Change Fund (LDCF/SCCF), members approved the largest-to-date LDCF work program, in the amount of $203 million.The LDCF work program included two programs and national projects in Angola, Cambodia, Chad, Comoros, Gambia, Guinea, Lao PDR, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Tanzania. The Global Biodiversity Framework Fund finances action for biodiversity Global Environment Facility 2024-06-20 | During the 67th meeting of the Global Environment Facility, the 2nd meeting of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) Council members and constituency groups took the floor, recognizing the historic nature of the adoption of this first work program amounting to $37.8 million.The GBFF work program comprises three projects: Conserving Mexican biodiversity through communities and their protected areas; Biodiversity Conservation in Indigenous Lands, in Brazil; and Caatinga Protected Areas Program, in Brazil.
