He was born and raised in Hyderabad, India into a family that has a true love for Kirtan and spirituality. He began studying harmonium and singing at the tender age of 5. At age 10, he moved on to learning Hindustani (Indian Classical Music) while traveling with his father throughout India singing the beautiful verses of Kirtan. Nowadays Punnu performs Kirtan, Xtatic Kirtan, Indian Fusion, Indian Classical music, Sufi, Bollywood music as well as Sound Healing. He also has his own Kirtan Academy for studying devotional music and traditional Indian instruments as well as Sound Healing Academy and leads music workshops in combination with yoga & meditation.Punnu recorded and released his first album Bhakti Child in 2011 followed by Karuna in 2013. Things I learned going to festivals this year #soundyoga #mantra #soundheling Heart of Sound 2024-09-20 | Tings I learned going to festivals this year (written with a little sass for humor, and some nuggets of truth):1“Breathwork” is often code for a space in which you’re invited (expected? encouraged?) to scream out your repressed feelings. If you don’t, the facilitator feels uneasy and isn’t sure if you’ve had a good experience, so even if you’re really not feeling anything come up, you play along with a bit of performative primal sounds and movement.2Kirtan and mantra chanting music is most popular when it’s loud, fast, and gets people dancing. Festival organizers expect this and so mantra chant music artists develop their set lists to be more performative and dancey, focused on the charisma of the musiciansvs. an internal experience of the power of sound.The empowering self-therapeutic value of mantra yoga, with participants directly embodying the nuanced vibrational healing frequencies, is not as popular as the flashy entertainment kīrtans or ecstatic dances where musicians basically use Sanskrit mantra as exotic lyrics.Also, I rarely heard basic accurate Sanskrit pronunciation. All this tells me there is SO. MUCH. MORE. that chant lovers don’t know they don’t know about the power of sound.🤔 side note (pardon the pun)I suspect that the festival culture has HEAVILY influenced the development of mantra music in the West (outside of India). Interesting phenomenon!3Cacao ceremonies, shamanic healing, MDMA, and plant medicine (psychedelics mushrooms, amanita muscaria, blue lotus, microdosing, etc.) are rising in popularity in the yoga, sound healing & wellness spaces.Maybe more people are interested in plant medicine nowadays than yoga and mantra chanting?🤔 I wonder if the appeal is that it is easy and readily available to ingest a substance to quickly trigger expanded consciousness or personal insight? Perhaps more importantly, the cool kids are doing it, so there’s a fair amount of social pressure to at least try something like ayahuasca.Compared to the more gradual self-fueled steady effort of the yogic path, psychedelic therapy for mental health certainly seems more sexy.

What comes up for you when you hear the words “master teacher”… #soundhealing #soundtherapy Heart of Sound 2024-07-04 | I would really like to know what comes up for you when you hear the words master teacher. I have a couple reasons for asking, first of which is recently a spiritual elder mentor of mine called me a master teacher and I was like, no, no, no, please don’t say that.You can say Anandra is masterful, maybe, sometimes, but I really didn’t want to be called that and yet I have people in my circle who are enjoying being called master teacher by their students and my alarm bells go off when I hear that.So am I just being uber sensitive to guru power culty dynamics because of my own, you know, sensitive trauma or is that really a cringy thing when you hear it? This plant has a defense mechanism that triggers it to close in on itself when touched. To me this is a reflection of the wisdom of Nature, and a sense of kindred resonance.I, too, can feel protective of my vulnerability and that’s OK, good, necessary.However, when trauma and PTSD get tricky is when we respond like that to situations that are not actually threats. How can we use sound yoga therapy to cultivate discernment?Trauma sucks, but almost everyone has some.No shame if you have a nervous system injury that flares up now and then. I certainly get triggered, and had an episode recently that surprised me with how swiftly it hit me. Flip a switch, and there I am. Possible causes include:untuned instruments, incomplete musical knowledge of notes, intervals, and harmonies and their usage for transformation by sound healing trainings, Failure to prepare the soundscape effectively to achieve the objective of tue session (i.e. making sure background tracks are in tune with instruments)It’s so bad, one of my friends said they’ll never go to a sound healing again because “it felt like being in a room with the screaming dogs of hell for an hour”If any of you sound healers, or sound healing training people can illuminate me on the solfeggio scale point, I’m all ears!Can crystal bowls be tuned after they’re manufactured?How do you deal with a set that is not tuned?Are the popular sound healing solfeggio vibrational frequencies actually not conducive to each other? (I.e. making a major 3rd two note chord, or major 5th two note chord, that has harmonic overtones?) It seems to me that many sound healing trainings (especially online, introductory sound courses however well intentioned) don’t really cover musicianship, or the importance of using instruments that are tuned to one another and other instruments.I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a sound healer gong a gong or tibetan bowl in 432 to background music that was recorded in 440. 😬Talk about a sound hurting!!!Please help me understand.The musical systems I’m familiar with (I’ve got about 30,000 hours of Western music, jazz & and Indian rāga music practice and training under my belt) use scales with relative pitches to a starting note. All of the instruments would be tuned to one another before playing together, to produce the intended sounds (and emotional, transformative effects if applicable)Help!

I have discovered a new hack that is proving itself reliably to catapult our group experience into levels of depth that it used to take me at least a week in a teacher training to get to.It has to do with vocal resonance, and inspiring a way to empower folks to feel safe enough to explore their voice without the habitual defense / protection mechanisms we unconsciously carry around. (A huge obstacle to melt before you can fully experience the power of sound, and because it’s largely unconscious it’s difficult to transform.)10 years into teaching teachers, and more than 15 into leading chant experiences myself full time, my leadership potential is catapulted to a whole new level.(Well, truth be told I’ve been testing and tweaking it for about a year already and it’s ready to share now because it’s been proven consistent for really accelerating a group chant dynamic . My policy for drop-ins during retreats. #soundbath #hawaiiyoga #retreat #soundhealing Heart of Sound 2024-05-20 | I’ve learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t when it comes to giving folx who can’t commit to an entire sound and mantra chant retreat, a chance to drop in for just one day or one session.After 25 years of teaching and hosting scores of retreats and trainings, I’ve found that this policy allows for some flexibility and opportunity, while maintaining the deep integrity of the retreat container.Once in a while I’ll make an exception for someone I know, who has studied with me before, and I know that the addition of their voice & energy will ADD to the retreat container and not disrupt or distract.Safety is paramount for me when planning retreat facilitation & logistics. Adding new people in who weren’t there from the beginning is a subtle upset to the alarm system of our nervous system, and it’s tangible when you’re tracking someone’s deep process into the transformative power of sound as closely as I am on retreat.Aspiring leaders, and 200/500 hr sound healing yoga teacher trainees, I hope you find this useful!
