Zerks&Wheels episode 24, Discombobulating the Lathe
updated

today we are diving into the cause of the numerous fires that broke out around Spokane and Coeur d'Alene this summer.
and well also talk about what you can do if your property is located in a rural setting close to forests or overgrown adjacent properties.
here are some links to various state agencies that are interesting to property owners whose property borders public lands or other types of uncultivated property:

today we're swapping out the spindle bearings in the Grizzly G7945 drill press. chinese bearings are baaaad, very, very bad and so i got ahold of some SKF bearings to upgrade the machine.
some of the bolts and screws have been swapped in the assembly process and so we are skipping that portion of the upgrade. unfortunately the belt pulley spindle bearing are on so tight that taking them off without a press or a proper fitting mandrel would damage the spindle beyond repair. so until i can get access to a proper press, they will just have to do. since they don't contribute to the accuracy of the chuck, they can stay in the machine until they fail.
Grizzly has a great tech data base on their machines and so i was able to identify all the parts and their respective sizes before tackling this project and had the parts on hand before getting started

today we're going to take a look at how to lay up a wooden panel. there are a multitude of videos in YouTube on the subject, but none that i have been able to find get into the nitty gritty so the panels don't warp or cup.
The panel we are looking at today is made of Spruce (_Picea abies_) cants and will have thin boards sandwiched betwixt them for a more artistic approach

today we're tearing into a permanent magnet magchuck i recently picked up from a fellow machinist and since it was not acting what seemed to be in line with other magchucks i've seen showcased, it seemed prudent to open it up and do a little service work to it.
i do apologize for some of the wonky views that are out of frame in one segment of the video. talk about having a blonde moment... doh!!
since i've never seen the internal workings of a magchuck i thought it might be interesting to others as to how they look and in this instance are set up inside.

Tijo, tijo, der Sommer is bald do!
der Sommer ist ein Breaver Mann,
Der hat ein schönes Höschen an,
Tijo, tijo, der Sommer ist bald do!
Heut is mitte in der Faschte,
Do lecke die Bauern de Kaschte,
Tijo, tijo, der Sommer ist bald do!
Howdy all! well today we get to check out an old ritual of seeing off old man winter by burning him in effigy! students of the current graduating class are tasked with toting the effigy thru town and collecting small donations here and there. the colorful little ribbons represent the blossoms of the spring flowers that will soon be coming up.

well check this out...
my apologies for this abridged version of a shop video. in all honesty, i had no confidence in the success of this project and didn't record any of the parts being made. the other reason is that it took much longer due to covid lockdown restrictions and serious case of lockdown blues that drew this project out beyond the normal scope of getting it done.
so now the machine is in a state where it can be used again even though restoration continues. it still has a few electrical issues and some mechanical ones as well.
there will be more videos coming about this machine showing its transformation from a pile of scrap to a fully functional machine.

today we are venturing up to the Trifels castle situated next to Annweiler in Rheinland Pfalz. It was first mentioned in historic document in 1081 but presumably built several decades earlier.
It housed one of history's most famous prisoners for a time until the english crown paid "a kings ransom" to have him released. His name was king Richard the Lionheart.

apologies for my long absence! todays video is of the Wildenburg castle ruins near Amorbach in the beautiful Odenwald.
the castle was erected sometime around the year 1200 and then burned to the ground in 1525 during the Peasants War by the troops of Goetz von Berlichingen, who was propelled into infamy by Goethe with his famous quote: "the King can lick me in mine arse!!"
whether or not he actually said this remains speculative and the scholars will debate that question until the cows come home. von Berlichingen was more famous for another thing which we will take a look at in the series "Trabbi und mi!"
enjoy!!

well, today is the day we set the new filter up onto the silo. the drone footage was limited due some software issues that wouldn't allow the drone to climb above 7.5m in elevation. since the gimbal doesn't allow the camera to pan up beyond horizontal i opted to not get it too close and jeopardize the lift and interfere with the crane operators view. after shutting it down after the lift was over and rebooting everything it finally operated as it should have. so the ending scene is sadly the only footage at elevation it was able to obtain.

today we're venturing off into new territory with the boring of the swing arm of pacing cutoff saw. the initial thought was to line bore the thing after putting in the bushings. unfortunately the chatter was so bad, it would have ruined the piece. so we went to plan B and bored it out with morse taper drills instead.
#janky_setups #sketchy_setups #unorthodox_setups
this two parter has some really janky setups that are definitely outside the operational envelope of the bridgeport.
we're rebuilding a pacing trim saw that chops extruded plastic rails to desired length. the pivot arm of the machine and running rod and bearings were completely worn out, to the point the pivot arm needed to be bushed and new rods made.
as mentioned in the opening monologue, the third part of this project was cancelled as i chose to go to a very unorthodox way of dealing with the egg shaped guide of pivot arm. since the rods isn't supposed to rotate anyway, i shortened the rod and made conical end caps that put tension on the rod and center it at the same time. the original plan was to drill out the mounts and make new bushings.
#janky_setups #unorthodox_setups #strange_setups
in todays video the lapel mic was on strike as the batteries gave up the ghost unbeknownst to me at the time of recording the monologue. so much of the footage wasn't really useable.
to convey the point of the video, i resorted a little heavier to subtitles instead.
my sincere apologies for the incompleteness of the monologue.

have you ever had to take apart and then re-assemble an electric motor and had to deal with the frustrations of trying to capture the inner retainer ring/plate with the screws?
well todays video deals with precisely that! while it's still a major pain in ass, this little trick helps cut down the finagle time of capturing the retainer.

today we are treating the tables of this Ulmia jointer with beeswax it prevent any further corrosion.
#woodworking_machinery #corrosion_protection
today we're diving deep into the structural components of a jointer. this machine has been in storage and is being restored back to working order. In its past it had been used to work MDF and there was a modest accumulation of very fine MDF dust in the inner workings of the machine. MDF dust is very hydrophilic and this caused some corrosion issues. today we are discussing how to mitigate for that should your machinery be subjected to temperature changes in your shop and MDF dust.
#woodworking_machinery #corrosion_prevention
today we're going to shortcut part of a restoration of a jointer. flat belts are very fickle when it comes to alignment of the pulleys. the slightest deviation as little as a tenth of a mm is enough to cause the belt to walk off the pulley during operation.
so today we're dressing the pulley on this machine in situ to avoid the pains of tearing down, re-assembling and re-aligning the motor to the machine.
A note of caution: do not try this if you are fearful of the machine. if you do attempt this procedure, do not wear jewelry or loose clothing
#woodworking_machines
today we're taking a second look at the grip pliers made by Rennsteig. todays video is a courtesy to the manufacturer for having given the tools to the channel for the initial review.
Disclaimer: todays product review is not sponsored by the manufacturer or any of their agents.
todays video deals with ball bearings. since many of us are not in the financial position to buy top drawer machinery, we find ourselves having to get into cheap chinese made machines that often let us down when it comes to their performance and longevity.
so the solution to this dilemma is a rather simple one: take the machine apart before even bringing it into service and swap out the bearings for something made by a reputable bearing manufacturer....
#cheap_chinese_bearings
today we're unboxing and assembling the cheap chinese 220L sandblaster cabinet.
as is customary with any chinese made tool this unit too has issues. while i will spare you the agony of the guessin&b'goshin of the assembly process, here are some of the issues that will need to be addressed by a person purchasing one of these:
1) the screws are abysmally poor quality and largely of the wrong length. this unit should be assembled with 1/4 panhead or 6mm panhead screws. of course there are various locations the require different length of screws.
2) hole alignment: often it took a minimal amount of pushing and pulling to get the screws to go into the holes but there were a few positions that required quite a bit of force.
3) air supply: the connector is in a place that makes it vulnerable to damage during loading and unloading of the cabinet. relocation is a must. also an air dryer and pressure regulator are good addition that will help it work better.
4) internal illumination: the 10W LED light bar just doesn't light the cabinet up in daylight conditions to see well inside. definitely need to get something with more lux.

in this part of the video we also correct the many mistakes that were made in the last repair of this machine. there were simply too many to list and the list would take up more space that is available in the description box
#dustcollector #dust_collector #dust_collector_rebuild
in this two part video we're rebuilding a dust collector from the ground up. the bearings were pretty well worn out all the way around and so not only did the impeller and shaft receive an overhaul, but the motor as well.
during the disassembly of the machine several large holes were seen in the volute. the thing had been patched on 4 different occasions but never really done right. so the old thing gets a new volute out of 4mm thick hot rolled steel.

once in a while a machined surface has to be reconditioned and that task be pert near impossible if there are no reference surfaces to work off of, or if the only reference surface is damaged.
today we're taking a look at a damaged shop vise and restoring a bit of it's original clamping power by re-machining the fixed jaw of the vise.
to do so we're going to lightly clamp a precision ground parallel and average out the tram and get some degree of symmetry back into this vise.
