After a lot of experimenting with different styles of chiptune music, I think I like FM synth music the most, so I decided to learn how to use the most advanced FM chip in Furnace (that wasn't too scary like ESFM is) to it's fullest potential. I used a lot of different styles of FM patches in the songs.Composing the songs was pretty tricky. When I was making the game, I made the stage themes and tilesets first, then composed songs based on the general vibe I was going for. I made it almost immediately after the song French Toast Core, another TSU song I made, and used far more samples in the song. The reason I hadn’t uploaded it till now was I couldn’t figure out what to do with it. I couldn’t figure out how to convert it to another sample chip, and I wasn’t able to reduce the channels to 8 so it would be a normal TSU song, so it’s this wonky 12 channel thing. Hopefully it sounds good tho. It has waveforms like the SID or VERA, filters that can change the sound of an instrument a lot, and even has limited sampling capabilities. It only has 64kb of sample memory, so for this song I used it for drums, a organ like sound that loops, and used the rest for sampled single cycle waveforms to add more variety. This time with the YMU759 MA 2 sound chip, which came out in 2000, one year after the first one, and was more similar to the OPL3 in terms of features. I always loved this song as a kid but didn’t listen to it often cause it only played at this menu (it’s also in the sound test), and I didn’t play the 2P mode often. Mega man 9 Hornet man stage Sega X board Arcade remix Supper_E1 2022-10-06 | I had transcribed the notes for this song a while ago, but couldn’t find a sound chip to remix it with. Later, I saw Ygor G’s remix of the Stardust speedway good future theme from sonic CD and SnugglyBun’s recent Sewerslvt remix, both of which used only the Sega PCM sound chip. Those remixes were really impressive and inspired me to use an arcade setup again. Earlier on in my music making experiments, I used DefleMask to make arcade style music with it’s arcade setting. It was based on the Sega OutRun and X board’s sound chips, the YM2151 OPM and the SegaPCM. The SegaPCM is really advanced and has 16 channels of sample audio. Idk the exact reason, but DefleMask was designed to use only 5 of those sound channels, and you couldn’t do normal sample pitching with it, so it was difficult to do anything besides drum samples with it. I had wanted to do advanced things with that sound configuration, but due to it’s limitations (and my lack of skill at the time) I didn’t get to experiment with it as much as I wanted to.Thankfully, Furnace tracker implemented the full version of the SegaPCM, so it can be used properly. I had been busy doing many other things that I hadn’t really thought of doing anything with the SegaPCM, but after seeing some examples of it being used, I decided to try it out again. What I came up with for this remix still isn’t the most advanced thing ever, but it is much more full sounding than anything I had done in the past with this setup. The chip came out in 1999 and was used in mobile devices at the time. Also as far as I know, it had only 4 2OP FM channels with similar parameters to the OPLL’s custom instruments.
