SALVATORE GARAU alla BIENNALE DI VENEZIA Salvatore Garau 2020-11-15 | SALVATORE GARAU alla BIENNALE DI VENEZIA, "TIEPOLO IN DIVENIRE" (Coll. privata) 2011, acrilico e tempera su telone PVC cm300x260. L'opera è stata realizzata con due dipinti dello stesso tema sovrapposti. La prima stesura è dipinta con acrilico indelebile, la seconda stesura soprastante, quindi a vista, è dipinta con la tempera. Mettendo a disposizione acqua e pennelli, Garau permetteva al pubblico di intervenire sulla pittura a tempera che, con il solo uso l'acqua, si sarebbe sciolta rimodellando le pennellate (il pubblico poteva ridipingere l'opera). Il continuo uso, però, avrebbe fatto colare la tempera mettendo in vista le pittura indelebile sottostante. Morte e rinascita in una stessa opera.SALVATORE GARAU at the BIENNALE DI VENEZIA, "TIEPOLO IN DIVENIRE" (private collection) 2011, acrylic and tempera on PVC sheet 300x260 cm. The work was created with two superimposed paintings of the same theme. The first layer is painted with indelible acrylic, the second layer above, therefore visible, is painted with tempera. By providing water and brushes, Garau allowed the public to intervene on the tempera painting which, with just the use of water, would dissolve and reshape the brush strokes (the public could repaint the work). The continuous use, however, would have caused the tempera to flow, revealing the indelible paint below. Death and rebirth in the same work.

This condition is essential for the painter Salvatore Garau. Yet the artist decides to question himself by taking a large white canvas (2mx5m) and sharing the creation of the work together with the inmates in the high security prison of Massama, Sardinia. He does not intend to teach prisoners how to paint, but to share creative energy with those who are not used to freedom, let alone creative freedom. On the canvas the prisoners can unleash their imagination that leads to wonder, and wonder is power. Power is openness without fear. The documentary "The canvas" follows this challenge, the surprising discoveries, the beginning and the development of a project that shows the power of art and speech, especially in shady and sad places like prisonL'arte richiede concentrazione, il più delle volte solitudine.
