Accompanying me is David Rogers, creator of the Olympic Peninsula Fungi Festival, which is quickly becoming one of the most popular fungi fests in the Northwest. We find several amazing mushrooms as we trudge through the moist landscape in the middle of summer. Washington is mostly very dry in the summer, except where the Pacific Ocean meets the dense foliage of the coast. The ocean fog settles on the trees and plants and drips on the forest floor, making it a very damp area, even when the rain isn't falling. Summer Chanterelle Mushrooms Explained Mushroom Wonderland 2025-06-27 | Mycology educator Aaron Hilliard explains several different types of wild Chanterelle mushrooms that grow in the summer. Chanterelles are arguably the most popular wild mushrooms in America and they are fruiting all across the northern hemisphere right now. Mushroom Wonderland is based in the Pacific Northwest and we have several distinct species that grow here in association with the trees that make this the "Evergreen state," (Washington).This is a great mushroom to hunt and to learn about foraging with, it was my first. It's distinct look, odor, and texture, make this an easy place to start if you're new to wild foraging. There are a few look alikes, like the Jack-o-lantern mushroom, Ompholotus- but they don't occur here in the NW. If you live where Jacks do fruit, familiarize yourself with their ecology and you will avoid a stomach ache, they aren't deadly. We will have a good look at the differences between "Pacific Golden Chanterelles," Cantharellus formosus, the "Rainbow Chanterelle," Cantharellus roseocanus, the "Cascade Chanterelle," Cantharellus cascadensis, and the "White Chanterelle," Cantharellus subalbidus. In this video I showcase the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society annual morel foray and campout, I show several different wild mushrooms that were foraged, we check out the habitat and fruitings of some huge beautiful natural morels known as "Snyder's morels," Morchella snyderi. I cook an amazing chicken and Prince mushroom risotto in a Dutch oven on the campfire (definitely a first for me), And we have a little fun around the campfire. Fungal Diversity Survey on the Elwha River- Habitat Restoration with Biodiversity Collective Mushroom Wonderland 2025-06-08 | This short documentary dives into the workings of a fungal bio-diversity survey that centers around the restoration of the Elwha River and surrounding area after a manmade lake was removed after 10 years. A team of volunteers, led by Graham Steinruck and Amy Honan, PhD, headed to the shores of the former Lake Aldwell area to see what kind of fungal life is moving back into the area after 12 years of returning the river to it's natural course. By sampling the fungus underground and above ground, the project aims to get a glimpse into what it looks like when Mother Nature restores precious fungi to an ecosystem. In this video we see an amazing sclerotia producing mushroom called Collybia tuberosa, a latex producing Mycena called Mycena lagopus, and the ever popular wild edible Lobster mushroom, Hypomyces lactifluorum. Mushroom Foraging with my 7 year old Daughter Mushroom Wonderland 2025-03-15 | In this video we hunt wild mushrooms and fill our basket! I take my 7 year old daughter out for a mushroom hunt last October and we find the motherload, and talk all about mushrooms in the wild. She is actually quite knowledgeable and makes this a really fun video as she asks the common questions newbies have. Some of the mushrooms are poisonous and some of them are really choice edibles, we will discuss and label them all to help give you the confidence you need to go foraging with your kiddos. This video was filmed last October so these mushrooms may not be growing in your neck of the woods at the specific time that you are watching this, although some of them might be. Mushrooms are pretty seasonal, and although they all need rain to grow, some of them prefer fall and some like the spring rain here in Washington state. This video is relevant anytime of the year as it can help to dispel a lot of the mycophobia that keeps people from learning to hunt for their own mushrooms.
