TMBG - Istanbul (Not Constantinople) (9/25/22) - accordion, no lead guitar, full band & 3 horns Groger Cleveland 2022-09-26 | I didn't film the whole show, I apologize. Hopefully someone else has footage of the rest of the stuff I missed. The keyboard stopped working around the bridge of Ana Ng, and they finished that song with just 1 guitar, bass, drums, vocals - it sounded incredible, honestly - I am ready for TMBG to be punk again. After failing to get the keyboard working again, they played Minimum Wage with Flansburgh's ridiculous door-buzzer pedal, and the band looked to be in quite a sour mood during that song about the assortment of things that had gone wrong, it was quite hilarious to see them play this happy instrumental while standing motionless, looking down and frowning, and John Flansburgh just makes the absolute worst sounds on the planet intentionally. Incredible.A Flood show is the perfect place for the keyboard to break, because almost all of those songs sound better with accordion - Women & Men, Road Movie To Berlin, Lucky Ball & Chain sounded incredible. I did miss the piano a little on Hot Cha and Dead, but mostly because John was a little less capable of playing the full song on just accordion due to the limitations of the instrument.I suppose a Flood show is also a good place for Dan Miller to be absent, because Flans must have the guitar parts for all those songs permanently in his bones after 30 years of touring them. They worked around his absence perfectly fine - no guitars in Synopsis For Latecomers, but Mark Pender played an incredible solo. The only other glaring omission was the countermelody in the Women & Men chorus - always seemed to me like that'd be a great thing to give to the horns, but whatever. Flans took all the solos on Twisting and looked like he was loving it. I wish nothing but the best to Dan Miller, I look forward to seeing him tear the roof off at another show in the future.
TMBG - Theme From Flood & Birdhouse In Your Soul (9/25/22) - accordion, no lead guitar Groger Cleveland 2022-09-26 | From what I've seen of the 2022 Flood tour, the Theme From Flood is primarily played on the keyboard, but it appears that they started bringing the horns in, off and on at different dates. The keyboard stopped working at this show, so the horns (augmented by Danny on the bass) played the whole song. Also good is John Linnell doing a crazy accordion walk-up on the fly in lieu the tremolo organ in the intro to Birdhouse. Dan Miller was not present due to a "personal emergency," but John Flansburgh was more than capable of filling the space with sheer energy. He sounded fantastic. All the odds were stacked against the band for this gig but they sounded amazing the whole time.

The keyboard stopped working, and John Linnell said "I could just play accordion," which pleased the crowd - John Flansburgh said something to the effect of "that would be a real thrill for the audience, and a huge artistic compromise for you." I hope they found some joy in getting to make hilarious accordion noises during the John Zorn Cobra style section of Spy.

Never seen that before!The keyboard stopped working. Linnell had to play the piano solo on accordion, which is nice, but the accordion's range isn't big enough - he couldn't go low enough in the first half. The disadvantages of a smaller, lightweight stage accordion.
