Synth looping, formant filters & studio tour Knobs 2021-07-28 | This channel has been kicking around for 6 years now. It has 167(!) videos. We've had some fun. The first few years were all about pedals, mostly demos with the odd documentary here & there. That was nice. But you've probably noticed things getting a bit more squirrely of late. I'm FEELING squirrely. There's less consistency between videos, lots of experimenting with different formats. I even tried talking to cameras. Hated that. It just became difficult to do the same thing over and over, and I had to try some stuff. So here we are, with another experiment. But I have a good feeling about this one. It feels like a return to basics, the simple and pure joy of experimenting with sound. So what is KNOBs Monthly? The idea is to share one video each month that folds in everything I've been up to. Ideas, demos, experiments, stories. A concentrated dose of inspiration, exploring how you can use devices to open up your creative process. It's still sponsored, technically, but in a very relaxed way. Another day of loops Knobs 2020-12-21 | This has quickly become one of my favourite things to do. It’s senseless by that point – I’m out of ideas, I’m tired, and I’ve definitely recorded enough loops. It forces something. Notice how 16 is a bit dull, and then things really start genre-hopping from 17 onwards. I just had to try stuff, I was so bored of myself. That jazz loop at 19 is my favourite of the whole lot, and different from anything I’ve ever done before. Same thing happened with 19 on the last batch. Just a nice reminder of how valuable it is to push your limits, even in a very casual way. A day of loops Knobs 2020-04-20 | I designed a little challenge for myself. A judgement-free looping marathon where I had to keep everything. It was the most natural and rewarding session I've recorded in months. The whole thing feels like it was done by someone else. It got tricky to keep coming up with starting points – I've never spent so much time with a bridge pickup. But that's what made it worthwhile. Loop 19 for example, I really didn't know I had that in me.
