Well boyos, we were finally hit with the news that The Crew is going to get killed on March 31st 2024, not even going to let it live a few more months to become 10 years old. People are absolutely rightfully outraged, and are demanding an offline mode. However...
What they didn't know, is that offline mode was always in the game. They can enable it with a flip of a switch. Laziness isn't their problem, their problem is that instead of buying the new games we'll play the much superior tc1 LOL.
Spread the word. We are not letting this great game die.

Default WIP (as it's called in-game) is a relatively big chunk of the map, hidden and tucked away in the bottom left (0, 0, 0) corner of the world. It's a huge space made up of uncolored white grass and all of the interiors we see in the game. In this video I drive around and explore it... until I let my guard down on the DPad down spam and get reset.
To get there, I started off by doing an underwater glitch (upcoming video) off the shore in front of the Mexican border, then drove until I was out of bounds, that's when I had to start doing the classic photomode/map spam glitch to avoid getting reset. Had to do that for a while, and almost lost hope of finding it, until miraculously I finally start seeing some big white area in the distance. That's when I started this recording.
Sadly I didn't get to explore the arguably most interesting sub-location here, which is the empty copy (at least that's what it appears to be) of the Raid tuner. The dates for the early screenshots date from mid 2011 to early 2014. Some might be earlier, all I could go off of is the looks and potential metadata in the image file.
The Crew's development lasted about 7 years, not counting post-release. Ivory Tower and The Crew was initially masterminded by 3 key people at Eden Games after just having released Test Drive Unlimited in 2006. They wanted to do bigger and better than just TDU 1.5, and The Crew was going to be their magnum opus. You could say that The Crew 1 is the true TDU2. The actual production of The Crew 1 under ubisoft's "wing" started in at least 2008 since you could still find files in The Crew 1 dating back to that year (earliest I could find personally).
I'm surprised at how true the (ORIGINAL 2014 PRE WILD RUN) game stayed to the concept art, even including some minor details. The locations in the early pictures look extremely similar to their release counterparts, although I haven't checked if all of them remain the same. I found at least 1 that was drastically changed (although it's such a huge map I can't even be sure).
If you haven't played the original 2014 The Crew much, or not at all, then you might probably think... wow, the game sure as heck looked better and much more diverse... what happened? The Wild Run update was a MASSIVE visual downgrade, it's a deep rabbit hole on which I'll make several videos later. Wild Run was just an overhyped illusion of an upgrade, in reality it was nothing but a ubisoft trademark downgrade to take away as many graphical features as possible while simultaneously making it look "better" by appealing to the early 8th gen "modern realistic graphics" hype, and of course, forza. About everything was downgraded: models, textures, materials, weathers (dumbed down to sunny/rainy), different atmospheres, different skies/clouds, different color palettes, pedestrian/traffic variation, etc, even gameplay. How come so many people were/are claiming that wild run is a massive improvement then? The more a lie is spread, the more people believe it. Most people that say that kind of stuff didn't even get to play the original game for themselves.

...Most notably the roads and such. I was surprised to find out how much better and higher res the original textures are. It's probably hard to tell through this video because of YT compression, but the roads are incredibly detailed, featuring what appears to be multiple noise layers for extra detail, 2 normal maps (one of them being of very high resolution) and even road cracks that use the "tessellation" technique to give them real 3D depth (AKA Displacement if you use Blender). There are also way more road variations, instead of just the same 1 we have now. I only get to show 2 in this video though. The post wild run textures appear boring and flat in comparison to these. Keep in mind that only the original textures are restored, but not original materials, so they still don't render correctly.
You can do this yourself by renaming/deleting "startchunk_patch.fat/.dat" in the data_win32 folder, however beware that the game will fail to load some of the areas in the game and a huge area around them because of the huge render distance, and it may softlock or crash your game. It's probably the Wild Run parks failing to load so stay away from areas near them. I think most of the left half of the map is safe to teleport/drive on.The Crew - Exploring Canada (Windsor, Ontario)whammy42023-02-08 | I found a very stupid and time consuming way to reach the Windsor city (which is across the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit), by doing the photomode/map out of bounds bypass (spam photomode/map every ~3 sec not to get reset) and driving across the top region of the map shown in the video. That's also why I have to spam photomode so often throughout the video.
This was my first time properly breaking out of bounds and reaching a usually unreachable area in The Crew 1, this was quite fascinating to me, however kind of disappointing since there was no way to get up the Ambassador Bridge.
This was recorded a bit ago and since then I've found more interesting places to explore out of bounds, I'll try to post more videos soon.
