The Dog Stars movie review: Jacob Elordi leads this post-apocalyptic survival film alongside Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce. The movie begins as a thoughtful exploration of grief, loneliness, and life after a devastating pandemic—but its troubling racial stereotypes and rushed final act seriously diminished the experience for me.

In my spoiler-light The Dog Stars review, I discuss Jacob Elordi’s strong leading performance and why his combination of vulnerability, strength, and warmth proves he can carry a film like this. I also break down Josh Brolin’s reliably gruff performance, the energy Guy Pearce brings to the story, and how Margaret Qualley creates an emotional path forward despite being given limited material.

The first half of The Dog Stars works as a meditative post-apocalyptic drama. It takes time introducing its characters, establishing its environments, and showing how the end of the world has shaped the survivors. Unfortunately, the middle of the movie falls back on ugly and outdated racial stereotypes. The final act then makes an abrupt tonal shift into something resembling a predictable post-apocalyptic video game.

There’s plenty to appreciate in the performances, atmosphere, and character work, but the movie’s second half prevents those strengths from forming a satisfying whole.

One Night Only (2026) Review — Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner have fantastic chemistry in a romantic comedy that might have worked better without its bizarre high-concept premise. Directed by Will Gluck, One Night Only imagines an America where premarital sex has been banned 364 days a year, leaving everyone with one night when they can legally hook up. Basically... The Purge, but horny.

In this One Night Only movie review, I break down why the romance between Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner works so well, why their chemistry carries the movie, and why Will Gluck's political satire and dystopian world-building ultimately held the film back for me.

There's a genuinely charming rom-com hiding inside One Night Only. Unfortunately, the movie also raises huge questions about government control, sexual repression, LGBTQ relationships, sex work, corporate exploitation, technology, and political complacency without exploring many of those ideas deeply enough.

I'll also discuss the film's surprisingly tame approach to its sexual premise, the influence of Will Gluck movies like Easy A and Friends with Benefits, and why I ultimately landed at 2.5/5.
