UnHerd's Freddie Sayers meets Martin Kulldorff
After the Great Barrington Declaration was announced in 2020, Harvard Professor Martin Kulldorff suddenly emerged into the public consciousness as a controversial figure. Despite data showing his skepticism about lockdowns and vaccine mandates were ultimate legitimate, especially in his home country of Sweden, Professor Kulldorff was fired by Harvard. Why? UnHerd's Freddie Sayers spoke to him to find out. Watch the full interview above or read a selection of extended quotes below:

As one of Mark Zuckerberg’s most trusted consiglieri, Clegg reportedly earns over $15 million a year and is tasked with dealing with the politics of its extraordinary global power and wealth. UnHerd's Freddie Sayers sits down with Jonathan Sumption to discuss Shamima Begum's citizenship case.
Read the accompanying article: unherd.com/watch-listen/the-case-for-shamima-begum
Listen to the podcast: plnk.to/unherd?to=page
On Friday, February 23rd, the UK's Court of Appeal rejected the case of Shamima Begum to have her British citizenship reinstated. The 15 year old schoolgirl had run away in 2015 to join the Islamic State and marry a jihadi. In 2019, the Home Secretary revoked her British citizenship, on the grounds that she had a Bangladeshi passport, and she’s been fighting to return home since then.
Is this new ruling a victory for national security, or a wound to the legal premise of liberty?
Former Supreme Court justice Lord Jonathan Sumption, one of the great legal minds of his generation, joined UnHerd's Freddie Sayers to discuss the Begum case.

Tucker Carlson’s recent trip to Moscow, where he filmed an interview with President Putin, seems to have turned into more of a promotional tour. New videos of ornate metro stations and functional supermarkets have been offered by Carlson’s channel as proof of Western decline and Russian superiority.
Is Carlson really suggesting that the Kremlin regime that this week allegedly assassinated vocal critic Alexei Navalny would be preferable to the Western democratic system?

UnHerd's Freddie Sayers meets historian David Abulafia.
Listen to the podcast: plnk.to/unherd?to=page
This week, Vladimir Putin's government announced a new round of sanctions on British individuals. Where most have focused on politicians and military leaders, this list was the first to focus on cultural figures.
It was accompanied with a statement that claimed the Kremlin was sanctioning “Russophobic British representatives” for “trying to discredit the constitutional system and socio-political processes in our country” and “pushing the Zelenskyy regime to continue the bloodshed” in Ukraine. They wrote that "the so-called brain trusts operating [in] British educational institutions make a significant contribution to the subversive work of London in the Russian direction" and that academics including Abulafia "bore responsibility for crimes against civilians.”
One of those sanctioned was David Abulafia, a Professor of History at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Renaissance and Mediterranean history, the Holy Roman Empire, and most recently, the oceans. For a maritime historian, this seemed like an usual situation, so UnHerd asked if he would talk about it. He joined UnHerd's Freddie Sayers live from Cambridge to share the interpretation of history that caught the eye of the Kremlin.

Will 2024 be the year of a Third World War? As Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on, the Middle East threatens to erupt, and China intensifies its military pressure on Taiwan, a global conflict seems all but inevitable.
How strange, then, that Britain’s Armed Forces are unprepared to defend their country. Over the past month, an increasing number of military insiders have been sounding the alarm, warning that, if we are to survive, we may have no choice but to enlist a “citizen army”.
The truth, however, is even more concerning.
As Aris Roussinos reveals in this Premium Report, it may be too late to guarantee Britain’s survival. Decades of political indifference and dismal procurement strategies have left our Armed Forces outgunned and obsolescent. And with military insiders increasingly expecting a land conflict with Russia, Britain now faces an uncomfortable question: is the coming war already lost?

Read the accompanying article: unherd.com/?post_type=thepost&p=496819
Listen to the podcast: plnk.to/unherd?to=page
Katharine Birbalsingh is the founder and head teacher of Michaela Community School, a free school in London. Since opening in 2014 Michaela has become a lightning rod for the culture war around education, and Birbalsingh has replaced the “student-centred” approach of modern teaching with a no-tolerance code of behaviour.
And as it turns out, “the strictest school in Britain” seems to work. Michaela is rated by Ofsted as “outstanding” and rivals the top-ranking private schools in England for exam results. But this week, it was announced that Birbalsingh would have to defend Michaela’s ethos at the High Court, after she banned prayer at the school. A Muslim pupil claimed that the ban was discriminatory, and is seeking to have it overturned.
The case speaks to a wider battle in Britain over social cohesion and multiculturalism. In an exclusive interview, Katharine Birbalsingh joined UnHerd’s Freddie Sayers to talk about it.

Under the cover of darkness, the US-led strikes hit more than 60 targets in 16 different locations, which resulted in at least five deaths (with a further six wounded).
Western powers have since tried to downplay concerns that the conflict in the Middle East is escalating. Earlier today, Pentagon officials claimed that the strikes were part of an effort to “de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea”. But with the Houthis vowing retaliation, is the situation spiralling out of control?
Joining Freddie Sayers for an emergency interview, UnHerd’s political editor Tom McTague shared his thoughts on the conflict. He argued that one country that has been curiously absent from the military response is China, even though the Red Sea shipping lane is its most valuable customer. Is the West cutting an increasingly isolated figure on the world stage? Or does it remain the preeminent power, reasserting its dominance in this permanently restive region?

A former CIA officer and host of the hit podcast The President’s Daily Brief, Mike Baker has particular insight into what is often called the “deep state”. Where American intelligence experts used to boast knowledge of and influence in the workings of world politics, he claims that power looks very different today.
Entering 2024 amidst two wars with Western involvement and a potential third conflict with China on the horizon, what does the decline of US security dominance mean for the future?
Mike joined Freddie Sayers in the UnHerd studio to discuss war in Israel, Ukraine and America's upcoming presidential election.

All around us are signs of crisis. UnHerd’s Flo Read and philosopher and cognitive scientist John Vervaeke sat down at the UnHerd Club to diagnose the alienation and anxiety that pervades our contemporary culture. Is a “meaning crisis” at the root of all the other crises we face – environmental, political, spiritual?

San Francisco, for decades known around the world for its jazz, free love and beat poetry, has in recent years become notorious for a different reason. Tent encampments on its streets and open-air drug markets have become a reference point for the consequences of ultra-progressive policies.
Florence Read and Freddie Sayers took a film crew (and an armed security guard) into the Tenderloin district to find out the truth for themselves. This special report includes remarkable interviews with city supervisor Dean Preston and Michael Shellenberger, author of San Fransicko, as well as drug users, locals and activists across the West.
Their report dives into the ideological and practical battles at the heart of the story, and asks whether San Francisco today could be a harbinger of things to come across the Western world.

Above the fireplace at the UnHerd club sits an original commission by the artist J.G. Fox. It’s called ‘The Political Herds’ and is a contemporary take on Victorian watercolours that sketched out crowds like the Corpus Christi Day parade in great detail.
It is based upon J. G. Fox’s earlier work ‘The Political Landscape’, which was displayed at the London Art Biennale 2023, and won the International Confederation of Art Critics Award.
He has replaced the historical figures with beautifully done sketches of today’s manifold political herds and micro-groupings — the kinds that UnHerd tries to understand and document every day but not join — in stunning detail. It’s witty, attractive and something that our members never fail to linger over and enjoy.
Alongside the Communists and the Postmodernists, you’ll find the corporate media, the cancelled, BLM, the TERFs, the universities, the Clown World guys and many others. The groups seem to be moving ever-upwards, but not really getting anywhere, which feels accurate.
We have been so inundated by requests, we have persuaded the artist to create two limited edition giclée print fine art editions — each hand-finished on Hahnemühle German Etching paper, signed, stamped and with a certificate of authenticity — that are now available on the UnHerd shop.
It would make a great Christmas present for the politically and artistically minded…

In the last year, artificial intelligence has progressed from a science-fiction fantasy to an impending reality. We can see its power in everything from online gadgets to whispers of a new, “post-singularity” tech frontier — as well as in renewed fears of an AI takeover.
One intellectual who anticipated this decades ago is Nick Bostrom, a Swedish philosopher at the University of Oxford and director of its Future of Humanity Institute. He joined UnHerd’s Florence Read to discuss extinction, the risk of government surveillance and how to use AI for the benefit of humanity.

Since its closure was announced last July, Gids — the Gender Identity Development Service at the world-renowned Tavistock and Portman Trust — has become synonymous with mismanagement and medical scandal.
It was supposed to be a haven for young people experiencing gender-related distress. Instead, following a string of complaints by whistle-blowers, an “inadequate” rating by the Care Quality Commission, a high-profile judicial review and, finally, a damning independent review, it was deemed unsafe.
In its place, two new regional hubs were set to open, with several more centres to follow. For Gids's long-standing critics, concerned about the distress its tumult was having on children, this came as a huge relief.
The story, however, does not end here.
Kathleen Stock has spent the past month speaking to a range of clinicians, NHS professionals and parents of dysphoric children — to find out whether Gids’s new service will be an improvement.
The portrait she paints is stark: her findings suggest that the NHS gender services are yet to become a clinically safe space for children and teens, with senior figures still pushing an activist ideology. Only last week, NHS bosses internally announced that they are significantly delaying the launch of one of the hubs. And as she reveals in her investigation, it is unlikely to be the final twist in Gids’s new chapter…
