And I mean recent series that people are talking about – often positively. I mean things that the internet or even sometimes real people with their real faces are are telling me: Watch The Peripheral because it’s GOOD.NO IT’S NOT.Now I’m not gonna go all "The PERIPHERAL" on you here which means talking about a bunch of stuff that has absolutely no relevance to anything else I bring up – so for this little conversation, I’ll just stick to "The Peripheral" and how endlessly bad it is.Narrative causality? – Ah, what now? If you asked the writers of this series what that was, they’d probably think it was one of the names of the vague concepts that didn’t make sense in their vague-arse script. What narrative causality really means is the plain and simple fact that having certain events take place in a story allows for a limited set of following events and prevents other things from even being a possibility, for example, if a written off vehicle is taken into evidence, it can’t then be... oh you know, here, with other evidence which the bad guys would be highly motivated to keep hidden, conveniently still in it.Now in comparison to everything else this is a petty grievance – don’t get me wrong, it is completely ridiculous but I’m prepared to accept that maybe they didn’t have time to film this guy stealing into the evidence room and taking some stuff or whatever, and they just had to use this footage. Amateur... yes, but series destroying, no?What is series destroying... is the fact that there is no premise here, at all. I’ll come back to that in a minute, because what the writers of The Peripheral do not get, and I mean REALLY DO. NOT. GET. AT ALL... is that intrigue or any kind of tension can only be built when the consequences and the stakes are introduced early enough that we can feel them.Now this is tricky, because I’m not saying that the entirety of what’s at stake has to be introduced in the first scene... but it does have to be early enough that when a threat comes up, we believe that there are real consequences at play.Instead, what the Peripheral does, CONSTANTLY, is to say: ”Here’s why this scene matters... and here’s the scene. And a third one, that’s sort of like the first one, is that equipment that would be strained in a decent sized room, can still sound good and look good when we’re talking about the TV.So the first thing I needed to do was to clear the space.Now I had all the gear, receivers and speakers etc already, so it was tempting to start putting stuff in straight away, but in such a near field environment with hard walls, well... that’s a problem... so I wanted to get something soft on these walls to help it sound better and something DARK to help with... being dark. Now as you can see, I’m not too worried about the condition of this room – the walls in this house have always been in horrible condition – and one day it will all be renovated with new sheet rock – and building this that’s good news because I can screw into them, both for the curtains and if necessary, the speakers, so let’s do it. This black polar fleece stuff is good enough – I already had it from 2 years ago when I made a short film and it absorps a lot of light - I know people are gonna say, it’s not sound absorption and it’s not hyperwave resonance tesaract certified and everything – it doesn’t matter. I’m not creating the ultimate home theater just for one person or two people – I’m making something quick, easy, cheap and that will be an enjoyable place to watch things and gives this otherwise useless space a home. So I’m using some fabric that I already had, and if you don’t, just get cheap dark fabric, should be $2 a metre, and it makes a very big difference – the most surprising part of which I’ll come back to later.Now another really cool part of this for me, is getting to use some of the otherwise no good gear that I have because I have lots of speakers and AV receivers – a lot of nice ones too, and a few nice compact ones... but before I get to that, I’ll just explain this hi-tech TV stand here. Now this table really was perfect... once I solved one little problem. As you can see, in it’s correct form, the TV’s feet sit just wide of the table. Obviously it’d be great if the TV was on of the proper base stands that runs the whole way along the bottom, but this is a cheap TV that I bought on clearance like 6 years ago when everything was going smart, and although it’s a 55” 4K TV, it was crazy cheap because it has no ”smarts” so to speak. I could probably sell this TV today for almost what I bought it for, if I just threw in a Chromecast.The receiver I ended up going with is just a tiny bit of overkill for this space: the Yamaha RX-V3073 is their flagship home theater receiver from that year and I mean flagship... often when people say flagship, they mean it’s high end. But the 3073 was the best integrated receiver possibly on the market back then... and it shows, I’ll get to the sound in a minute but immediately I noticed usability was so much better than the Pioneer... changing things like which speakers and what level and everything is easy but also very clear, you’re never in doubt about what you’re doing so I really like this receiver.I didn’t have the option for bigger speakers. I own dozens but any bigger than this doesn’t fit, unless they go above the TV which would affect the soundstage. And, if the speakers were any bigger, standing them would also become a problem, because the stands would be bigger and that pushes everything further away from the wall. So unless I get a smaller TV... these are really the biggest speakers that are feasible.For the center speaker, I didn’t use the one from this set because I don’t love the design of that one. I don’t have any other speakers in this series, it’s the smallest of the Wharfedale Diamond 9 speakers.Wow... the end of the description...

I may have a small reference to one of India's most famous spin bowlers in this review... It's not the normal kind of foreign language film I review, and while I'd say it's one of the better Bollywood movies I've seen, but not the best. It came out in 2018 and you can watch it on Netflix right now! It's mostly in Hindi... that is to say, it is all in Hindi, but a lot of the Hindi language has become blended with English now, so there are parts of this film that are in English, but it will be during a scene that's supposedly in Hindi.

Review and Rant: Deadwind / Karppi NORDIC NOIR Lamont McLeod 2020-02-11 | A lot of people think of Finland and think immediately of their Scandinavian neighbours, Sweden and Denmark, and when it comes to crime thrillers, that's a good thing. But does the Finnish Karppi (Deadwind) measure up to the same standards as shows like The Bridge, Trapped, Nobel and Occupied?I argue that Deadwind is nought but a shadow of it's Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic mates' offerings.This channel is dedicated to reviewing foreign films and TV shows, because there is a lot of good stuff out there, that’s why I started making these reviews but I think that a lot of English speakers and English speaking YouTube channels try to shortcut their way to sounding clever by doing just that: Deadwind… it’s Finnish, Finland is kind of Scandinavia… the show must be like Denmark's Forbrydelsen, The Bridge, Iceland's Trapped. Unfortunately, no.Yes, it has some of the elements. There are a few tense moments, I liked the protaginist, she’s a good actress and she’s interesting enough to have kept me watching. Then there’s the cinematography, a lot of the Nordic shows have a certain look to their shots and that’s the case here as well, also the editing and music is extremely competent, they love a good looking title sequence and in my opinion where this show in particular shines, is the theme music – not necessarily the score itself, rather the theme of the show that is heard over the titles. Bordertown also had excellent music so the Finnish shows are really smashing this element, though I’m sure that the Danish composers of that Bordertown score would like me to mention that they are in fact, Danish. Rebecca Patton from the the website Bustle says: It's becoming somewhat of a tradition for Netflix to bring Scandinavian TV shows to its streaming platform. OK then.Yes, it is technically Nordic Noir, yes, it does even belong in that category – but no, it is nowhere near the level of Trapped, The Bridge, Nobel…it’s a bit better than Borderliner and Bordertown. Everything else is just riding on the coat tails of better shows. In my top 10 foreign TV series, which you can watch here - Finland is the only one of the 5 Nordic countries that did not get a spot… I think we can see something really good from them soon, they’ve got everything already covered except the right script – so, hopefully we’ll see one that hits it out of the park soon.
