Collecting for Bonsai: MONSTER American Persimmon 2017!!! I hope this video shows that collecting trees can be more than just a few shovel cuts here and pruning snips there. It can be extremely challenging, but the payoff can be wonderfully rewarding. But, when all that work and care isn't enough, when something you've taken from the woods died in your care, it can be very hard to take. Check the 6 minute mark of this update. youtu.be/nCMYNlDhycA?t=359This has to be the hardest and most frustrating tree I'd ever collected. It was a beautiful American persimmon tree (Diospyros virginiana) that had been damaged when an old ash came crashing down upon it years ago. I found it while walking in my woods. Little did I realize the endurance it would take to get it out of the ground and into the pot. Even though it leafed out and showed great promise, it didn't make it. Keep your eyes open for the update video in the future.Persimmon trees, with few exceptions, produce some of the most stunning displays of fruit in the bonsai realm. They can linger for months after the leaves have dropped, with a variety of colors and shapes depending on the parent trees. Parent trees, you ask? Yes. Persimmon trees are divided into sexes, with only female trees bearing fruit. Carolina Bonsai Expo 2016 Appalachian Bonsai 2017-02-27 | Every October, The North Carolina Arboretum hosts it's annual Carolina Bonsai Expo. Clubs ranging from South Carolina to Pennsylvania to Tennessee & others join together to display & learn during the largest bonsai expo in the Southeast region. As the representative of Roanoke, Virginia's Hinoki Bonsai Club, I was able to display our member's trees, and participate in the many workshops. Guest artists & speakers included Dan Robinson and Jim Doyle. An excellent and consistently humorous demonstration was done by curator Arthur Joura and artists John Geanangle and Ken Duncan. Toward the end of the last day, the auction took place with Jim Doyle, Randy Clarke, and the affable Bob Hampel taking turns as auctioneer. How to Winterize Your Bonsai 2016 Appalachian Bonsai 2016-12-12 | This video highlights many techniques by which to protect your cold-hardy trees during the wintertime. It is by no mean an exhaustive list; it is merely a showcase of tried-&-true methods that I myself have used.Plants have evolved to be outside, so temperate zone trees should remain outdoors during the winter. However, bonsai trees are in shallow pots, which provides less-than-natural root protection. The pot allows more fluctuations in temperature, which can be detrimental to your trees. All trees you've seen me collect have survived & thrived this growing season! This video highlights some of those and a few other trees from my benches.
