Mentee to Mentor: Donta Green ’10 Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-11-14 | Donta Green works every day to be a positive influence in the lives of the people around him.In his day job, he is the CEO of the Trade Institute of Pittsburgh, a nonprofit that helps people with barriers to education get job skills in construction and masonry, as well as life skills such as interviewing and personal finance. After work, Donta grabs his whistle and heads off to Westinghouse High School, where he is his alma mater’s head football coach. Lights, Camera, Passion: Lindsay Ward ’08 Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-10-31 | Growing up near IUP, Lindsay Ward thought she needed to go far away to get the best college education to work in broadcasting in a major city. But her parents encouraged her to check out IUP because of its affordability. Lindsay heeded her parents’ advice and dived into the offerings of the Communications Media Department, including joining the student-run station, IUP-TV. She found that IUP had all the things she needed to prepare her for a career in broadcasting, she found a group of students like her, and when she graduated in 2008, she was well on her way to the career she dreamed of.After completing an internship at a TV station in eastern Pennsylvania, Lindsay landed her first job, which led to another one at a bigger station, and eventually, to KDKA @CBS Pittsburgh, where she serves as the morning news anchor. Nicolas Arino M’10: 2022 Distinguished Alumni Awards Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-08-29 | Nicolas and his wife, Natalia Lardone, are the first Argentineans to obtain an Eberly College of Business MBA degree. He also set an alumni benchmark when he attained the regional management level at the New York Stock Exchange, where he is the head for Latin America, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. A native of Córdoba, Argentina, he received two bachelor’s degrees from the Universidad Nacional de Rio Cuarto, won a Fulbright for leadership studies at the University of Delaware, worked in exports and as a commodities broker, and speaks Portuguese and Spanish in addition to English. Active in Rotary International for more than a decade, he led the Metro NYC club as president. He and his wife recently became American citizens and are the proud parents of twins.

Jordan Golin D’96: 2022 Distinguished Alumni Awards Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-08-10 | Golin is president and CEO of Pittsburgh’s Jewish Family and Community Services, with which he has been associated since 2001. A licensed psychologist, he has maintained a private practice for over 20 years and was director of the psychology department at Sharon Regional Medical Center. The Miami native received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and a master’s from Jerusalem’s Hebrew University. A recipient of numerous awards in his role at JFCS, he guided his organization in helping Pittsburgh recover from the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre by providing words of hope and healing and by arranging interventions for hundreds who suffered trauma reactions.
Catherine Marcum D’08: 2022 Distinguished Alumni Awards Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-08-01 | Marcum is the upcoming chair of Appalachian State University’s Department of Government and Justice Studies, having come from Georgia Southern University. Published in over 60 peer-reviewed journals and author or coauthor of 20 books, she is a past editor of Corrections: Policy, Practice, and Research and current editor of the International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence and Cybercrime. She is an elected trustee of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association, which named her Educator of the Year in 2015. A native of East Bank, West Virginia, she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Virginia State College and Marshall University, respectively.
Debra Evans Smith ’81: 2022 Distinguished Alumni Awards Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-07-26 | A retired senior official with the FBI, Pittsburgh native Debra Evans Smith ’81 had a stellar career with the bureau for 30 years, beginning as one of the first 50 Black female agents in the 1980s and ending in the top ranks. A spy chaser most of the time, she won top honors for her role in such cases, including one of the most important in US history—that of Robert Hanssen. After retirement, she returned to the FBI and managed a priority initiative under directors James Comey and Christopher Wray to address what had been the bureau’s inadequate record on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Larry Gottardi ’71: 2022 Distinguished Alumni Awards Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-07-26 | Gottardi grew up near the IUP main campus and went on to spend 35 years on active duty with the US Army, retiring in 2006 with the rank of major general. In 2009, he was appointed to the Senior Executive Service. Most recently, he has been acting deputy under the secretary of the Army and director of the Civilian Senior Leader Management Office. The recipient of a Penn State journalism master’s degree in 1980 and of numerous awards, medals, and decorations, he served with the Army throughout the US and at posts abroad. Today, he lives in Georgia.
Rebecca Stapleton ’84: 2022 Distinguished Alumni Awards Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-07-26 | Stapleton retired two years ago as senior executive vice president and chief banking officer at S&T Bank. She previously served as chief human resources officer, having worked in human resources at the bank since 1988. At the same time, she taught at IUP, Penn State, and the University of Pittsburgh. She serves on the Indiana Regional Medical Center board and the Eberly College of Business advisory council. Passionate about helping women advance, she was the Pennsylvania Bankers Association’s Women in Banking state committee chair and the first recipient of its Champion for Women award. A self-employed consultant, she focuses on human resources, executive coaching, and women’s initiatives.
A Welcoming Walkway: IUP’s Rainbow Sidewalk Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-06-29 | IUP’s rainbow sidewalk is one of the most visible symbols of the university’s commitment to making all people feel welcome and supported on campus. The sidewalk was suggested by students from the LGBTQIA+ community who said the campus needed more artwork to represent all genders and identities and to provide a sense of belonging and home.This bird’s-eye view shows the design that Tedd Cogar, senior assessment coordinator and LGBTQIA Support, based on the Philadelphia Pride flag and the Progressive Pride flag, along with components of others. From Student to Professor: Jeremy McCool D’21 Indiana University of Pennsylvania 2022-02-14 | Theory, research, production work, and teaching experience – a winning combination Jeremy McCool found in IUP's communications media doctoral program.It propelled him from a graduate student at IUP to a professor at West Chester University. "IUP really gave me a chance to be able to teach for the first time and really learn that that was a gift of mine, and a passion, and something that I kind of wanted to do long-term," said McCool.Now, as an assistant professor of digital and global media, he teaches media technology, public speaking, and digital storytelling.Digital storytelling was a class he created while at IUP. It came from his interest in teaching students about media entrepreneurship, which he didn't feel a lot of communications and media programs were addressing. "I see the future of podcasting growing at a just ridiculous rate," he said, adding that YouTube was growing in a similar way.He wanted to help students be able to create their own platforms."I think my purpose is to inspire other people ... to really inspire the next generation to do the same, to really go for their goals," he said.McCool knows how powerful an inspiring mentor can be."Having a mentor is extremely crucial in your journey, no matter what you are trying to do. What brought me to IUP is my mentor, Jack Thomas. He's currently the president of Central State University (in Wilberforce, Ohio). He ended up getting his doctorate from IUP. He's one of the people who really inspired me."After hearing about IUP from Thomas, McCool looked into the PhD program in the Department of Communications Media."(IUP) gave me a chance to teach, to be able to create my own course, and to really be able to navigate through where I wanted to be long-term, as far as in education, in higher education specifically, and in media," he said."It really just gave me a chance to really be able to tap into my own talents and my own gifts and be able to utilize that to help other people. So that was really my journey at IUP."
