The other filter was the ZWB1 that you'd have to use in conjunction with an infrared blocker. I have one around here somewhere but not sure exactly where.

That the Earth's magnetic field is a passive thing - it shouldn't need a continuous input of energy to maintain itself (that seemed reasonable to me because the magnetic field has been around for a long time and it seems mostly stable). But as it turns out, the Earth is a giant electromagnet, and so of course those currents dissipate their energy as they encounter resistance in the liquid metal through which they flow. So the energy to continuously create these currents comes from the kinetic energy of the liquid metal flows in the Earth's outer core.2. If it's convection, I'm thinking hot things rising, cooler things falling. But apparently the main effect driving convection is the compositional differences at the boundary with the Earth's inner core. This is because of the differential freezing at the boundary. Things like iron freeze into the inner core, while elements like sulfur do not. Hence the pockets of lighter material which then rise outwards.3. I didn't get why the fluid motion was necessary for the generation of the magnetic field. I mean if it's a conducting liquid, it can conduct currents whether it moves or not. But the key is that the liquid metal can 'trap' magnetic fields. I imagine this like how iron channels magnetic fields. Then once these fields are channeled, they can be pulled and stretched, making more magnetic field.4. Fluids operate very differently in rotating frames of reference. This is something I didn't intuitively grasp. But, as fluids move from the inner core outwards, those particles are moving much more slowly in the direction of rotation than the matter that has been there for a long time, which means the convection currents get deflected and form helices.Listening to Prof. Arnou's explanation made possible my explanation in the other video (it's really just a summary of what he says here). Instead I think we will see something similar to previous revolutions (e.g. agricultural and industrial). That is, ultimately everyone will be better off, working fewer hours and doing tasks more suited to people than to machines (thanks to widespread automation), but during the transition there will be discomfort. This discomfort arises when people who have been working particular jobs for most of their lives find themselves out of work, or find their jobs don't even exist anymore. Then education and retraining is the challenge, something that's not easily accomplished and something our educational system is not setup to do.

I think the findings he summarizes in it really resonated with me and collected a lot of strands (or chunks) of my thinking.One of the main findings I think we forget is that working memory is limited. This needs to be taken into account in every educational discussion. We can't simply talk philosophically about the purposes of education. We must also discuss the brain's response to different teaching methods, because ultimately that's what we are trying to affect.To me the psychology of system one and two suggests we need to be careful to give students challenges that are within their 'zone of proximal development' i.e. capable for Drew to Grasp because Gunn has already automated a lot of tasks relevant to this challenge.

The Problem With Facebook 2veritasium 2014-01-14 | WATCH THE FOLLOW-UP: youtube.com/watch?v=oVfHeWTKjagThe problem is much worse than I originally thought.Share this on Facebook ;)Facebook is a complex ecosystem of individuals, creators, brands and advertisers, but I don't think it serves any of these groups particularly well because its top priority is to make money. Now, I don't think making money is a bad thing, in fact I hope to make some myself. The problem is the only way Facebook has found to make money is by treating all entities on the site as advertisers and charging them to share their content.This business plan backfires because 1) not all entities ARE advertisers and 2) it was the content from these people, specifically friends, family, and creators that made the site worth visiting in the first place. Now the incentives are misaligned:- individuals want to see great content, but they are now seeing more paid content and organically shared content which appeals to the lowest common denominator (babies, weddings, and banal memes)- creators want to reach fans but their posts are being throttled to force them to pay to be seen- brands and advertisers have to pay once to advertise their page on Facebook, and then pay again to reach the people who have already liked their page. Plus Facebook is not a place where people generally go to buy things.Facebook stands in contrast to other social media like Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram where all content is shared with all followers.
