Delegates adopted an agreement that includes four goals and 23 targets to achieve by 2030. Among the targets is the preservation of at least 30 per cent of land and marine areas. The global agreement was passed despite the objections from a number of African countries. Thousands of delegates from 196 countries gathered in Montreal from December 6 to 19 to negotiate a new agreement on global biodiversity goals years and to develop an action plan for the next ten years.

Federal and Ontario govts announce reduction in child-care fees by end of year – December 19, 2022 cpac 2022-12-19 | Families Minister Karina Gould and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announce that parents in Ontario will see their licensed child-care fees reduced by 50 per cent on average by the end of 2022. The ministers are joined at the news conference in Toronto by Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce as well as by Charmaine Williams, Ontario's associate minister of women's social and economic opportunity. Minister Lecce announces the province is creating an additional 53,000 affordable child-care spaces. Linda Cottes, senior vice-president of child and family development at the YMCA of Greater Toronto, also takes part in the announcement. In March 2022, the federal and Ontario governments announced a $13.2-billion agreement with the goal of providing $10-a-day child care in the province by September 2025. COP15: Federal, Manitoba and Indigenous govts working to protect watershed – December 14, 2022 cpac 2022-12-14 | Steven Guilbeault (federal minister of environment and climate change and minister responsible for Parks Canada) takes part in an announcement at COP15, the United Nations biodiversity conference in Montreal. The federal government is partnering with Manitoba and four First Nations in an attempt to preserve the Seal River watershed in the province’s northwestern region. The Sayisi Dene First Nation, Northlands Denesuline First Nation, Barren Lands First Nation and O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation will lead efforts to protect the area, which is one of the largest ecologically intact watersheds in the world. Also participating in the news conference are Jeff Wharton (Manitoba’s minister of environment, climate and parks), Jan Forster (Wharton’s deputy minister), Stephanie Thorassie (executive director of the Seal River Watershed Alliance), and Ernie Bussidor (senior advisory and founder of the alliance).
