Whisky Wednesday
Springbank 18YO 2024, 46% - Whisky Wednesday
updated
Part 1 is all about Tamdhu 12YO, and it's approachable and available nature to whisky drinkers who are looking for a sherry alternative.
Matured solely in ex-sherry casks and bottled at 43% ABV - this bottle is striking to look at, easy to drink, if not a little lacking in big flavours.
Overall, it's a whisky to certainly put your eyes on if you want something that you haven't seen or tried before.
But, when you want to wrap your palate around the house style and keep it affordable, there is only one option, and it's this.
Linkwood 12YO is, or was, part of the Flora and Fauna series of whiskies from Diageo's lesser known distilleries, typically distilleries that were prioritised for blending across the board.
Thing bottle is surprising to me as I didn't expect it to be as peach driven as it is. Far more exotic than I remember it being. Although that last sip was many moons ago.
Cheers!
Here, we have two miniatures that I picked up for £20 each. Given that they're 50cl each, and from closed distilleries, I honestly think that's quite good value overall. But, are they worth it at that point, even?
This is a long video. I apologise, but it gets a little ranty in parts, but I do still feel that it's full of details that are to be talked about.
A combination of rather well aged single grain and single pot still whiskies, even at just 40% ABV, Midleton Very Rare is a rather special and very tasty option when it comes to premium blended whiskies.
With a nose that is dense with the most tangy, exotic fruits that I've come across for a while. All backed up by a drier, richer palate of coffee, soft oak, Xmas spices, and white chocolate.
A whisky that I would take over Johnnie Walker Blue Label in a heartbeat, here we have the 2023 release.

I have had the honour of being hosted by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society for few hours back in May to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
Heading over to their Queen Street branch, I was honoured to have met their ridiculously talented and knowledgeable staff who were more than handy in helping me pick some choice whiskies to review for Whisky Wednesday.
Our next whisky is 53.429 (Kelp Is On The Way) bottled at 58.9% ABV, 10YO, 289 bottles. It's a rather stunning example of refill bourbon cask Caol Ila that isn’t sweet at all. Bottled specifically for The Queen Street branch SMWS; it was an absolute pleasure to be able to showcase this whisky on the channel.
Caol Ila is a massive distillery, the biggest distillery on Islay and its house profile is peated and smoky, but, for me, has always had a creamier, sweeter character to it, certainly compared to some of it’s fellow distilleries on Islay.
This whisky is full of cracked black pepper, fresh salt, fish oil, wet beach, and that petroleum fishing boat feel that everyone first gets a whiff of when they smell any peated Islay for the first time. The refill cask has allowed the spirit to shine through much more, offering up these more vegetal, powerful, west coast powerhouse notes. In many ways, it’s a perfect Islay whisky to celebrate such a big occasion with. The taste is all peanuts, vinegar and chilli oil, and soy sauce. Amazingly inviting with Asian food flavour profiles with a gentle fizz of heat ruminating throughout the finish of the whisky.

First, we have a spirit made by The Glasgow Distillery, typically a malt distillery, but they’ve produced a one-off, made to order outrun for The SMWS to assist with the celebration The G16 Rare Release (Dark & Stormy Crème Brûlée) is a limited batch of 1,300 bottles, at 6YO, bottled at 50% ABV, all in all, a rather tame ABV for The SMWS, but nonetheless, a fun privilege to try this bottle.
Layered in sweet, rich, and some welcome earthier notes of liquorice, ginger, and molasses notes that help fill out the heavy caramel, vanilla, and Tonka driven flavour profile that it offers to you. It's a very easy drink that isn’t unusual for a grain whisky, but as it’s a custom order for a big celebration, it’s quite a pleasure to be able to try this.
A must try if you can still. Get your hands on it. If not, then do head over to. Their website to check out a host of other options. For your grain whisky needs.
I've tried many of these bottles over the years but have rarely committed to the purchase. There's no reason in particular, I was probably too occupied with a Bourbon, probably.
A combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez sherry casks and bottled at 58.2% ABV, this is a classic example of Glendronach. It is laced with amaretto, tiramisu, coffee, treacle, and big waves of caramelised vanilla. It is a thick, rich, and rather wonderful example of what Glendronach can be. With added water, it becomes especially...different.
Matured near the foothills of the Himalayas in a village called Indri, this whisky is distilled and matured in the classic way, although the maturation takes a slight twist with ex-bourbon, ex-PX sherry, and then some French red wine casks. Rather lovely indeed.
First out of the gate, the nose and finish on this are truly wonderful. The smell is a wash with fresh blackberry and mint, following that on are loads of toffee and pineapple. The finish is all about Bottled In Bond Bourbon. If you love the warmth of 50% ABV whisky, this is an absolute must!
The whisky did fall down for me on the taste front. It has lots of soft oak and barrel spice, but that's all I could really pull from it. That was a true shame.
Overall, though, if you've never tried Indian whisky or love bourbon and want to try Indian whisky, this is a truly affordable and easily accessible way to do it. Cheers!
I haven't purchased a Cairdeas release for a very long time, 2016, I think, was the last time with a madeira finish. Anyway, I saw the email for this and bit the bullet - worth every single penny.
75% of the maturing stock has been in second fill madeira casks, with the other 25% being finished in mostly white port casks. A little summer time smoke infused dream of white peaches, white grapes, ashy classic Laphroaig peat, vanilla, toffee, honey, mint, and agave syrup
It's impossible to hide my love for Laphroaig. It does everything you get from unpeated whiskies, but with peat. Winner all around. I'm incredibly happy to have this open on the shelf. Well done, Laphroaig.

We have:
44% Balmenach in a Pedro Ximinez Puncheon
42% Craigellachie in an Oloroso sherry butt
14% Invergordon in an ex-Sherry cask
All of these profiles really work soundly together. They amplify each other and are very complimentary. But, it's still Craigellachie that leads the way with its slightly salt, soft savoury notes, all backed up with that densely soaked sherry profile. A true charmer and a very, very memorable blended whisky.
Massive congratulations to Turntable Whiskies for this release. It is rather special!

Roaring in west coast peat and keeping the heat going with loads of virgin oak influence, here we have a rather interesting blend that has brought together two very powerful types of flavour in the whisky industry.
We have liquid makeup of:
40% Caol Ila matured in virgin oak.
23% Cameronbridge in Virgin Oak.
22% Benrinnes in virgin oak.
15% Invergordon in Virgin Oak.
Much to mull over here, but as you'll see in the video, I've got an issue with this selection of things. Please do watch to see if you agree with me.

This is Turntable Blending House, and it is quite an exciting way to show off the component parts of blends and how they go into influencing whatever they're trying to make. This is Track 01: Joy. Discovery. Invention. Bottled at 46%, natural colour and un-chill filtered, it is made up of Linkwood, Knockdhu, Girvan and Strathclyde whiskies, all from a host of much more interesting, or possibly just talked about barrel selections.

What is Canasta? A blending of the Palomino grape and the Pedro Ximinez grape varities, the former producing a classically off-dry sherry, the latter producing a ridiculously sweet, rich sherry that is the equivalent of alcoholic diabetes.
Bunnahabhain has matured their spirit in this sherry type and have produced this cocoa powder and orange oil soaked spirit, with all of those classic, salty, sweet Bunnahabhain smells and tastes.

I've had the privilege of trying this whisky prior to this video. It was a wonderful privilege to be able to try it again.

I'm biased. I love Laphroaig. It's probably my favourite Islay distillery. Yet to ever experience a version of this cask strength release that wasn't draped in complexity and classic Laphroaig peatiness.
Some will undoubtedly disagree with how much I love this, but there aren't many other cask strength Islay whiskies that are as affordable (contextually) as this...perhaps Ardbeg Uigeadail But even then, that can be so varied when it comes to the batches.
Either way, I hope you enjoy the review!

Rabbit Hole is the concept of Kaveh Zamanian, a former clinical psychologist, now whisky maker! Here we have the Heigold, a Kentucky straight bourbon with 70% corn, 25% malted German rye, and 5% malted barley. The name Heigold and the inclusion of German rye specifically is a reference to a German rock cutter who moved to Kentucky in the 1800s. Lacking in the tropical fruit area, but very strong in the heavy spice and butterscotch flavour profile, Rabbit Hole Heigold is a relatively affordable and powerful style of bourbon that stands up on its own and probably in your favourite cocktail.

Producing around 1,300,000 litres of whisky per year and maturing them in a wide selection of cask types, it is a gentle and almost 'lowland' like style of single malt whisky.
In the ownership of Angus Dundee Distillers, I'd like to use this video to bring some very needed and apt attention to this whisky distillery. The 10YO that I'm reviewing is a bourbon cask matured whisky that is scented with pineapple, whipped cream, and some delicious melon notes throughout it.

Bought in 1982 by Pernod Ricard and releasing their first single malt in 1986, the distillery is now owned by Andrew Symington, owner of Signatory Vintages. He purchased the distillery in 2002 and released all of the fun stuff from the warehouses. In 2018, a new distillery was commissioned and doubled the distilleries capacity, losing its smallest distillery moniker but bringing the distillery into a new light and a bigger future.
The 10YO is a heavily sherried and rather complex product for being bottled at 40% ABV. A distillery that had some unusual bias against, but luckily, good whisky can shine through any predisposition.

Carol Quinn has delved into the history books of Irish distilling and found records of irish rye distillation throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Midleton is a distillery of massive ability. If you can think of it, they've probably done it. However, when they do release interesting and unusual whiskies, the price point isn't typically accessible to everyone... but this is £30 a bottle. I'm in.

The label states 'gentle, floral and unpeated'. This is true, no doubt about it. But inside this whisky are deeper, darker, more intense flavours than what I expected to find in a 'lighter' style of west coast single malt. This bottle honestly reminds me of salt, truffle, honey, candle wax, ginger, and vanilla. A very interesting and complex whisky for below £50 per bottle.

This is Silkie Midnight, a selection of Irish single malts vatted together, featuring cask selections of ex-bourbon, sherry, red wine, virgin oak and imperial stout casks, with 35% of this whisky being peated to 55PPM. On paper, this all sounds like a wonderful thing. The bourbon, virgin oak, and stout casks shine the brightest in this mix, but I do feel that there's a masking of any character or style. So many casks on a younger whisky seems a little overkill for me, but this won't impact my overall view of a new distillery in Ireland, which is starting out on a strong foot.
When it comes to history and whisky nerd excitement, this place covers a lot of ground and doesn't show any signs of stopping. Check it out when and where you can. Cheers!

Aged for a majority of its life in ex-American Oak, and then being finished for a short period in Limousin Oak casks, this is a rich, volumous, and very flavourful single malt. Encompassing all parts of the flavour chart, including that subtle smoke that the standard Loch Lomond is famous for. This is another epitome of classic Highland style.

This is their 12YO offering. Not natural colour, but is unfiltered and bottled at 48%, what's to dislike on the forefront of this? A healthy combination of sherry and bourbon casks is fuelling this wonderfully forward and fruity profile. It's honestly so tasty that it's rather criminal that we don't even talk about it that much.
Ardbeg 10YO. Glenlivet 12YO. Highland Park 12YO. Glenfiddich 15YO. Eagle Rare. Sazerac Rye, and our subject of the day, Lagavulin 16YO.
I'm not one to air negative reviews, well, maybe one a year, at most. But with two seperate rounds of price increases from Diageo, woeful stock availability for almost a year and mass undercut selling from huge retailers for years, is it any wonder that Lagavulin 16YO has been the victim of its own success?
What was once lauded as the finest of product from Islay is now a thin, veiled shadow of itself. Does it still taste good? Yeah, it does. But that becomes bye-the-bye when you factor in everything else that is peated and availabile in the world of whisky.

Having previously held the Teeling Small Batch Rum release, the barrels were shipped over to Umberella London where they aged their house ginger beer in them for two years. Once emptied, the barrels were sent back to Dublin where this whisky was finished in them for six months. Quite a journey those barrels have been on.
This whisky is fun, it's relatively affordbale and there are only 700 bottles of it. That's a nice limtied amount that people can enjoy and not shelter away for the cupboards.

I'm not a coffee expert in any way, but the smell of this Macallan is all forest fruits and classic chocolate orange notes from Macallan of old. The finish, albeit very long, isn't something I'm a fan of. It reminds me a lot of Macallan Edition No.5 - the finish of it anyway. It had this very bitter and dark intensity to it, which doesn't seem very complimentary to the smell or initial taste profile.
At £140 per bottle, this isn't going to blow your mind, I would class it as a rather sub-par offering from the famous distillery. But naturally, that's just my opinion, I've heard rave reviews about this from other people. So what's your view?

Becoming a full production facility as of January 2017 (Happy birthday, Torabhaig) - they are giving us everything a peated whisky drinker could desire:
- Incredible nose on this Allt Gleann release.
- Pre-distilled PPM level.
- Residual PPM level.
- Cask types.
- Cask vintages.
- Natural colour.
- Non-chill filtered.
- Approachable pricing.
- Skye with a difference.
So, with all of this, why are we not talking about this distillery more? Why are we focusing on the brands that are already owned by relatively well known to massively dominant forces in the whisky industry? Are you looking for something new? Look no further. Cheers.

This year won't be a surprise, but there is a small elephant in the room to deal with...
Follow the link to find out what finally got it.
But above all of this. What were your high and low points of whisky in 2022?
Cutting a long story short... these whiskies are wonderful. They're genuinely complex, classic examples of what these distilleries became famous for. However, there is a crux to this praise, and that comes in the way of a £310 price tag for two twelve year old whiskies. Stop me when you think this is getting absurd.
Price increases on special release bottles aren't unusual, and I expect it when it comes to the really old, very rare, very unique examples of any type of whisky. But for two bottles of an average age that are classic examples of distillery character, where's the price justification?

Compass Box have been at the forefront of an attitude reinvention towards blended whiskies for two decades now, and this is their most affordable and accessible product in a core range of brilliance.
Formerly known as Great King Street, now the Artist Blend, this blended whisky is a collection of classic Speyside and Highland blending ingredients (Linkwood, Blamenach and Clynelish), as well as grain from Cameronbridge and a custom blended whisky of Compass Box's own making.
Targeting drinkers who want an easy yet more interesting approach to blended products. As well as bartenders and whisky fans who love a cocktail or two, the Artist Blend is an almost perfect example of how to be fun and affordable for whisky drinkers, as well as being artful in design as well as ingredients.

After what has felt like longer than a year, Glendronach 18 has returned with all of its dark and mysterious allure. But, and luckily, I've been able to compare it to an older release form 2016...will it stand up?
That is quite a loaded comparison, granted. But I don't feel we've ever really got to grapple with a regular bottle of Glendronach 18YO. Billy Walker spoilt us with his insane selection of casks and vatting it all with much older stocks. Was that something still viable with this product? Is the current range still doing that? The stocks are still there, I pressume.
But let me know your thoughts about this new bottling of what can only be considered a modern classic by all who have tried it in the past.

A single pot still whiskey comprised of malted barley, unmalted barley, and Irish barra oats! All working wonderfully together, along with barrel influences from Kentucky and Spain, this rich, creamy, Pot Still spice whisky is a true contender to take the place of some high-ranking bottles from across Ireland.
Bottled at 43%, natural colour and un-chill filtered, at roughly around what Redbreast now want for their 12YO, this thing is stepping into the boots of a rather big brand and taking, for me, quite abit of its limelight.
But with all things fun and new in Irish whiskey, this product is very much at the front of the queue. Hopefully, you'll agree too!

The nose is rather luxurious with maple, pecan and those classic heather honey notes. But once it comes to taste, this whisky is an explosion of bigger, drier, more powerful HP stylings that I haven't really come across before, and that is quite fun!

Lagg Distillery is part two in the realm of Arran. A distillery designed for heavily peated spirit, sourcing said peat from north eastern Scotland, it allows for a still very smoky but lighter, lemony, honey'd style of west coast peated whisky. Peated to 50PPM, 50% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtered, this is an exemplary style of young Scottish whisky that ticks every box for me.
Limited to 10,000 bottle in the first release, this has become much more difficult to get ahold of, but for those of you that have opened it, what a treat it is!

This is an excellent whisky, as is the whole Benromach range. Being owned by Gordon and Macphail, it's doubtful that the family begind G&M are sat in a boardroom, plotting and scheming about how annoyed people will be that there standard range isn't 46% ABV.
On taste alone, Benromach 15YO is an outstanding product, from an excellent distillery and it provides something different from your typical and sometimes, very boring, Speysode whisky portfolio.

Toki was introduced to the whisky market at an interesting and high demand point in the current world of Japanese whisky. Insane demand and the seemingly slow drip of Japanese whisky, even as a concept, is still reaching people. As a result, people want the best, the most awarded and what experts recommend. But alot of Suntory and Nikka's most lauded products are now obselete for the everyday enjoyer of whisky.
Enter Toki. A combination of Chita, Hakushu and a few other products in the Suntory line, the idea of the style is to be light, fresh and very easy to drink. Can confirm that it hits these points rather well, and it's affordable. Which isn't a word that is associated with Japanese whisky too much these days.
Think of this product as a perfectly fine neat spirit, not expensive at all, but does the job well in the Japanese style. But it's a very good quality mixer that has a huge versatility, but you can't go wrong with a classic highball of this and gingerale, little slice of apple or lime as a garnish. Perfect.
It's not going to blow your mind, but it won't blow apart yout wallet if you want a Japanese whisky that hits all the trademark style points.

A blended whisky of 50% malt, 50% grain, 50% ABV, and buckets of sherry to bring through a very rich, balanced and overall excellent product in the whisky world. A brand that also has an insane amount of history that accompanies the 'integrity' check list that comes with it. I bought this for less than £40 a bottle, outside of Glenallachie, who does this? Nobody.
This is something that you all have to seek out and assess for yourselves. A truly excellent example of great whisky - blend, single malt or other. Excellent.

Willet is a distillery that I also haven't paid that much attention to, much to my discredit. Having gone through several ownership changes and historical speed bumps, the distillery has been producing its own bourbon and rye whiskies for a few years now.
This 4YO release blew my mind away the first time I tried it. It had all the hallmarks of a well made rye spirit with heavenly helpings of butterscotch and fresh mint alongside each other.
Is it pricey? Yes, for a young, cask strength spirit, it does have a price tag of just under £100 a bottle. But it isn't that different in price to younger Scottish, Irish and definitely English whiskies. And it's on the shelf, I can physically buy it without needing to chase auction houses and retailer. This is a quality spirit from a very exciting distillery.

The 18YO is a full maturation of ex-sherry casks and Bunnahabhain's slightly salty spirit. Excellent companions! The unique way that sherry and Bunnahabhain's spirit mix together makes for a very special style of whisky, and it isn't something that is classically sweet and overly decadent.
It has balance of sweet, savoury, nutty, that all collide in the most wondeful way.
Much has been said about Bunnahabhain's batch quality in the last few years, but having had the chance to try a few batches of the 18YO, the style seems more consistent in their older stocks. Prices are rising and this is now an allocated product on UK shores. But with the rising insanity of 18YO prices, and the way whisky is being gobbled up by anyone who can quote Peaky Blinders lines in your face, Bunnahabhain maintains a relative calm.

Overall, I enjoy this whisky. It has notes at 63% that no Highland Park I've had before does, also, if you choose to add water then it becomes a more classic expression. But, and I'm not normally one to get hung up on this, why didn't you age state it? Even if it had a huge 4YO age statement, I'd've still bought and enjoyed it, but a little integrity appears to be missing, as is batch 3 of this release, where is it?
Highland Park, despite their premium rise, have fallen in the eyes of those who once loved it as an accessible and fun mix of all flavours. Despite me enjoying this bottle, the brand is becoming very...limited.
