The QAnon crank conspiracy theory is, on the face of it, so bizarre that some consider it an elaborate joke. It casts President Trump as an undercover warrior against a Satanic ring of paedophiles within show business and the “Deep State”. Notwithstanding, it has now broken out of the darker corners of the internet, and is beginning to win devotees within parts of the political mainstream.
A combination of COVID-19 conspiracism and local factors has now resulted in the QAnon cult building support in the United Kingdom. This webinar will explain what QAnon followers believe, examine the demographics of QAnon supporters, consider the role of social media in promoting conspiracism, and will postulate the medium-term impact on society and politics of QAnon activism. We will also discuss the genesis and attraction of conspiracism, and its potentially deadly consequences.
The Panel:
Dr Daniel Allington is Senior Lecturer in Social and Cultural Artificial Intelligence at King’s College, London. He researches and publishes extensively on conspiracism, hatred, inequality, and exclusion, as well as in the ever-evolving relationships between culture, politics, and technology.
Professor Matthew Feldman is Professorial Fellow at the University of York and is director of the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right. His focus is on fascism and the far right in Europe and the United States.Scotlands Blasphemy Law by the Back Door?Quilliam International2020-09-22 | Scotland seeks to replace the blasphemy law with a new offence of “stirring up religious hatred“.
However, unlike the parallel English “incitement to religious hatred” offence, the legislation contains no broad provision designed to protect passionate dissent and comedy. As a result of a campaign 15 years ago, headed by Rowan Atkinson, English law permits “antipathy, dislike, ridicule or abuse”. Scottish politicians from all parties have raised concerns about the scope of the legislation.
Should the law really be criminalising antipathy to religion or particular religious practices? How narrow is the line between anodyne criticism and prohibited dislike? In particular, how will this law impact those who have converted from one religion, or one sect of a religion, to another? How will it affect individuals whose experience within particular religious communities has been so negative that they feel hatred of those who have imposed misery on them?
Our panel consists of Fraser Sutherland, Chief Executive of Humanist Society Scotland, Emma Webb, of Civitas and Free to Disagree, Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK, and Simon Calvert, The Christian Institute's Deputy Director for Public Affairs.
Chaired by David Toube: Director of Policy, Quilliam
This webinar was held on 21 September 2020Statues Must Fall?Quilliam International2020-07-09 | How should society address public symbolism? A Zoom Webinar held on Wednesday, 8th July, 2020
Umar Lee is a prominent Muslim activist, with a focus on US social and religious political issues. He is campaigning for the removal from the city that is named after him of the statue of the French King, Louis IX. King Louis IX was canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church in the 13th century. He also participated in crusades, burnt copies of the Talmud, and expelled Jews from France.
From those who accumulated their wealth through slave trading to those who held views which we now regard as abominable, how should societies address the public symbolism of place names and monuments? How should we commemorate historical figures whose legacies are both positive and negative? Do battles over such symbols provide valuable opportunities to re-assess history, or do they polarize and toxify such debates?
Our panel consists of Umar Lee, Quilliam US's Executive Director, Dr. Muhammad Fraser-Rahim, and Quilliam’s UK Director of Policy, David Toube.Dr. Muhammad Fraser-Rahim speaks to i24 News on Foreign Adversaries and Black PainQuilliam International2020-06-12 | Dr. Muhammad Fraser-Rahim, Executive Director, North America for Quilliam International, speaks to i24 News on Foreign adversaries, homegrown terrorist recruitment and black pain.

In addition to the structural power dynamics of white supremacy, it is also important to confront Arab and South Asian hegemony and anti-black perspectives that are often unchallenged in our homes, centers and mosques. The murder of our brother George Floyd is another reminder of how black communities experience multiple forms of injustice.
This webinar focuses on both overt and private anti-black racism in Muslim communities, and the ways in which this bias can be addressed via alternative voices, actors and active resistance, premised on balance and honesty.
Our panel consists of Nimco Ali, anti-FGM campaigner and Feminist, and Mansour Al Hadj, Writer and Human Rights activist.
