A GERMAN WAR CEMETERY IN ENGLAND? Exploring CANNOCK CHASE & RUGELEY 🇬🇧 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-10-05 | One day exploring Cannock Chase National Landscape (AONB) including Rugeley, Slitting Mill, an iron-age hill-fort, Coppice Hill stepping stones & a German Military Cemetery.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKCannock Chase is England’s smallest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a great day out from Birmingham. I stayed in Rugeley, a small market town on the edge of Cannock Chase & decided to begin my day there.I ate breakfast at The Plaza which is a Wetherspoons pub and then spent some time walking along the canal path and through the town centre of Rugeley.A short distance from the town is the small village of Slitting Mill, named after the mills that used to produce nails in the 17th and 18th centuries. Remnants of the mills can be seen along the Heritage Trail and there’s a secret waterfall and bridge to explore too.Next I drove up to Cannock Chase Visitor Centre where I walked a few leisurely trails, admired the lakes and ponds, and hiked the forests. It wasn’t far from Coppice Hill where I found a remarkable glacial boulder, some idyllic stepping stones and more gorgeous green forests with trails in every direction.Further up the road I found the Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery, an intriguing place where thousands of German war dead are buried. It’s unusual to see this type of cemetery in England so I set about learning the back story and how it came to be. Standing there looking at the gravestones, one of them being Reinhold Wopp, I couldn’t help but to wonder how each of them ended up trying to invade a foreign land.Finally I visited the Castle Ring Scheduled Ancient Monument which is a hill fort surrounded by forests and farmland. The monument stands as a stark reminder of that dark day, a place for quiet reflection on the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy.Finally, seeking out more layers of Smederevo's past, I explored the atmospheric Old Cemetery. Amidst the ancient tombstones, with the rain still coming down, there was a profound sense of peace and history, a silent testament to generations gone by.I visited Republic Square in the heart of Smederevo and gazed upon the five domed St George’s Church which dominates the whole area. Closeby are plenty of European style buildings, a World War I monument and a historic Mulberry Tree.This wasn't just a day trip; it was an epic encounter with history, intensified by the wild weather! What’s it Like in SERBIA? Exploring NOVI SAD 🇷🇸 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-08-31 | A day trip from Belgrade to Novi Sad, where I explored significant landmarks such as Petrovaradin Fortress, the Danube Riverfront, and Trg Slobode (Liberty Square).🇷🇸 See more of my videos from SERBIA → bit.ly/mwt_serbiaTo gain a comprehensive understanding of Serbia beyond its capital, a visit to Novi Sad is highly recommended. This city, situated along the Danube, showcases notable architecture reflecting the historical influence of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.Upon arrival at Petrovaradin Station, I commenced my exploration on foot. This afforded an opportunity to observe the suburban landscape, pausing for breakfast and a brief visit to a local church. Subsequently, I explored the well-preserved architecture of the Lower Town, historically integrated within the fortress complex, before proceeding to ascend the steps towards the main observation points of Petrovaradin Fortress.Constructed primarily in the 18th century as a defensive measure against the Ottoman Empire, Petrovaradin Fortress offers impressive panoramic views. The prominent clock tower is a notable feature. The extensive fortifications and numerous points of interest could easily occupy a full day of exploration.Although the on-site museum was closed, I located an entrance to the subterranean tunnel network. However, due to safety considerations, I opted not to venture fully into this area. Instead, I crossed Varadin Bridge to Memorial Park, where I encountered the memorial commemorating Victims of Fascism during World War II.This insightful day broadened my understanding of the rich history evident in this region of Serbia. My exploration continued into Novi Sad's city center, encompassing Dunavski Park, the Palata Dunavske Banovine, and the principal commercial thoroughfares of Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska streets. The city possessed a vibrant atmosphere, with many residents enjoying the evening.The architectural landscape of this area is characterized by its elegant Austro-Hungarian heritage. I’ll show you the famous landmarks and tourist sites that you don’t want to miss!We’ll start on the Danube River where I got an interesting perspective on the city with the drone. I then passed through Terazije Square on route to Republic Square.Republic Square (Трг републике) is the most central and important square in the city, I’ll point out some of the important buildings that surround it as well as delve into a little Serbian history. I’ll introduce you to the National Museum of Serbia, the National Theatre of Belgrade and the Prince Mihailo Monument.A few streets down from Republic Square is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in the Old Town - the Skadarlija District otherwise known as the Bohemian Quarter. It’s a vintage cobblestone street lined with local restaurants and bars, it’s where you’ll find the poets and free thinkers, as well as bands playing live traditional Serbian music!Next up is Studentski Park and a famous duo of religious buildings, both central and worth visiting. The first is Bajrakli Mosque which was built in the 17th century under the Ottoman Empire, and the other is the Cathedral Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, which is Belgrade’s main cathedral built during the 19th century.I took a lazy stroll along the main shopping street in the old town and up towards Belgrade Fortress - the attraction every tourist should visit when they’re in town. Mors is an island in the Limfjorden populated by around 20,000 people - it feels smaller than it is with plenty of intriguing places and charming scenery.My first adventure was to get over to the island, especially when I realised there wasn’t a bridge nearby. Luckily a ferry service was operating from Næssund Færgeleje Hurup over to Næssund-færgen on the island of Morsø so I purchased a ticket and drove on board. This turned out to be an incredible experience as the ferry was an old wooden vessel of historical importance.The drive continued and I was soon at the base of a large hill called Hanklit. A short walk later and I had scaled the 60 metre high molar cliff and was looking out at the impressive Limfjord and the distant flats of the North Jutlandic Island. I continued on my way finding sunflowers, agricultural land & some impressive waterside roads.As the day turned into early evening I drove over to the Viking Museum Lindholm Høje (Vikingemuseet) on the outskirts of Aalborg where my road trip around the engrossing coastline of North Jutland had begun just one week earlier. I spent my final few hours in Denmark at the ancient Viking burial ground where stone circles and gravestones sit on a hill overlooking the city. The Morsø Traktormuseum was opened in 1980 and features around 150 tractors manufactured between 1917 and 1960. The trail is through the so-called Nordic Jungle on a sand and gravel path - there are plenty of minor ups and downs with a number of good vantage points along the way.I’ll show you the best place to park, point you in the direction of the trailhead and take you along for a leisurely walk through some of Denmark's most surreal landscapes. We’ll see a watchtower and small lake that it’s possible to visit by modestly extending the hike by another kilometre or two.I’ll tell you about the wildlife you’re likely to see whilst hiking through this area, and we’ll talk about the different trails available - some muddy and others either on sandy or gravel paths.Overall this circular trail is just under 5 kilometres (3 miles) but leave a couple of hours to complete it so you have ample time to take in the scenery and snap a few photographs. ONE DAY in THY NATIONAL PARK 🇩🇰 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-07-27 | One day driving the wild landscapes of Thy National Park in Denmark. I visited the Isbjerg Viewpoint, the surf scene at Cold Hawaii and Klitmøller, and the southern beaches of Agger.🇩🇰 See all my NORTH JUTLAND videos → bit.ly/mwt_NorthJutlandI’ve arrived on Denmark’s west coast ready to explore the rugged and sand swept landscape of Thy National Park. This is a stark and raw part of Denmark owing to its dramatic dunes mostly covered by shrubland and plantations, and its windy and wild coastline that stretches from Hanstholm in the north to Agger Tange adjoining the Limfjord.I left the camp ground early and headed for the heath land of Ibsjerg close to Nors Lake. There I grabbed my rucksack and joined a walking trail towards the highest point inside Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve. From the top the views across Thy National Park are memorable.Not far away I stopped once more and visited a swimming lake and nature trail on the south west corner of Nors Lake. The nature and serenity were enjoyable but the drive there was far more challenging than expected with single track roads and a dead end.Next up was a stop in the surf town of Klitmøller in an area known as Cold Hawaii. It’s situated on the windy but warm west coast of North Jutland and is famous for a number of water sports including surfing and waterboarding. This part of Thy National Park is shaped by the relentless power of the North Sea.I continued my drive south and checked into my accommodation for the night - the Rødkælkevej's B&B in Hurup. Together we’ll explore some of the wildest and compelling places to visit in North Jutland!That tale of coastal erosion begins at an old graveyard now dramatically positioned on the edge of a cliff. It’s called Mårup Kirkegård (Mårup Churchyard) and was once about a kilometre from the sea. The church was dismantled and moved several years ago but the graveyard remains, although it too is expected to fall into the sea in the not too distant future.Whilst there we’ll get into the history and also talk about the story of the HMS Crescent which is entirely relevant to this area.Around a mile south is the region's most famous and intriguing structure - a lighthouse called Rubjerg Knude. This lighthouse made history in 2019 when it was set on tracks and rolled back 70 meters to save it from falling into the sea. It’s a unique sight and looks special amongst the tall yellow sand dunes and the deep blue ocean.Further south I stopped at more exquisite beaches and a rather imposing stretch of World War II fortifications that have begun sliding down the tall cliffs and breaking apart. The most miraculous being the large domineering concrete bunkers belonging to Hitler’s Atlantic Wall bunker system.This part of North Jutland is known for its beaches and rough sea but I managed also to find some wondrous driving roads along my way. These included the outstanding Naturrummet Vejlerne - a view point where the tarmac overlooks the bright blue Limfjord. I’ll credit the drone for that one!My accommodation for the night was somewhere a little different and certainly complimenting the luxury of the previous evening. I rented a Glamping pod at Thy Mini Camping. I rented a one bedroom house on AirBnB situated on a Danish farm close to the woods. It came with a full kitchen, living area and porch - I’ll give you a tour and tell you how much I paid to stay there. I think you’ll be impressed!Following some home made breakfast in the cabin I packed up and got on the road. My first stop turned out to be an old windmill called Vennebjerg Mølle. This mill was built in Bindslev in 1842, then moved to Tversted before being moved again to its current location in Vennebjerg in 1934. It’s a true Danish workhorse and historically important place.I continued my drive past tractors working in the fields and cows grazing in the grassy meadows. A short time later I was parking up in the seaside town of Løkken.Løkken is a popular vacation town in the Vendsyssel region of northern Denmark with bright, distinctive buildings and a chirpy, cheerful mood. I had lunch at Børsen, admired the vivid surroundings of the main square and made the most out of the sunny afternoon.I followed the people and arrived at the beach which was an altogether gorgeous scene. I DROVE on a BEACH in DENMARK! 🇩🇰 The Road to HIRTSHALS! Matt Whitings Europe 2025-07-06 | An exciting drive from Skagen to Hirtshals on my North Jutland Road trip. There were tall sand dunes, a rough ocean and miles of incredible sand. The gate was open so I drove onto the beach and along the sand for a bit.My next stop was a hiking and recreational area called Naturring Tversted, although a sign said Tversted Plantage as I walked along one of the trails close to the car park. A short wander brought me to an opening in the trees where I found Tversted Lakes (Tversted Søerne).I continued on a muddy puddle-ridden path and came out at another glorious beach close to Uggerby Strand. I then set about finding a wooden watchtower called Ravklit which was deep in the woods and positioned in a scenic hilltop. Climbing to the top was not for the faint of heart - watch the video to see if I made it all the way to the top!I collected my car from the car park and got back on the road heading towards my final destination - the town of Hirtshals. This feels like the real Denmark!Skagen attracts visitors from all across the country thanks to its location on the northern tip of the Skagen peninsula and its plethora of holiday homes. There’s a buzz around town with tourists wandering aimlessly through its lanes and streets seeking out little known museums and quaint gift shops.Skagen is much more than a holiday town though with a picturesque waterfront, perfectly crafted wooden buildings and some unused train tracks running through the historic district reminding locals and visitors alike that this was once a more industrial area.I visited the old water tower now open to anyone capable of climbing a few steep steps and it’s something I’d recommend as the views from the top are tremendous. A walk along the classical Main Street then delivered me to the large yellow Skagen Church (Skagen Kirke). Combine all of this with a bright and sunny day and the photo opportunities are endless.Skagen is a first-rate town in northern Denmark and well worth a visit. Many people stop for a few days to delve deeper into the local sites and attractions but I opted to continue northwards to a place called Grenen.To get there I drove from the Danish town of Skagen to a parking area close to the Skagen Bunkermuseum close to the northernmost point on the Jutland Peninsula. From there I walked about 30 minutes to a surreal place where the Skagerak and Kattegat Seas viciously collide.Getting there was straight forward, I made my way from the car park, past a couple of bunkers sitting indiscriminately amongst the sand dunes and then out to a beautiful carribean style beach. I walked along, feet splashing in the water, enjoying the beautiful blues skies and mild weather.On route I saw a few signs warning of seals and reminding all the humans not to approach or bother them. Although hopeful I didn’t expect to see any for real. Well, the seal gods must have been looking down on me because as I approached the tip of the peninsula there was a seal pup laying on the sand. I took a few photos, a bit of video and continued on my way.A few steps more and I was at the point they call Grenen and could visibly see the two seas smashing into each other. Who Knew Denmark Had SAND DUNES & PALM TREES? 🇩🇰 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-06-22 | My North Jutland Road Trip continues as I visit a giant migrating sand dune called Råbjerg Mile, one of Jutland’s tallest observation towers, an exotic palm tree lined beach & a sand buried church.🇩🇰 See all my NORTH JUTLAND videos → bit.ly/mwt_NorthJutlandNorth Jutland continues to surprise me with unexpected and amazing places as I drove between Frederikshavn on Jutland’s east coast and Skagen on the northernmost tip - an area of Denmark known as Vendsyssel. It’s an area frequented by holidaying Dane’s who want to explore their own backyard - and I can’t say I blame them. The region is amazing!My first stop was a Caribbean style beach called Palmestranden located just north of Frederikshavn, it’s lined with palm trees and loaded with rich golden sand. After strolling along the shore I drove a short distance to an observation tower overlooking corn fields and farm houses.The Cloostårnet, or Cloos Tower, was completed in 1962 and overlooks Frederikshavn. It’s a popular tourist attraction with a unique story which I’ll explain in the video.From there I drove northwards and ended up at the Råbjerg Mile - Denmark’s largest migrating sand dune which is slowly moving across the peninsula. It’s a spectacle to see and even more surreal to walk across! Who knew I’d find deserts and dunes in Northern Denmark?A few miles away I found another sandy attraction - the tower of Sct. Laurentius Church (St Lawrence) which pokes out curiously from the surrounding sand dunes. It’s better known to travellers like me as the Sand Buried Church (Den Tilsandede Kirke) and is another must see place in North Jutland. It feels so isolated and empty but the fortress is just a few minutes drive away.Bangsbo Fort consists of 80 concrete bunkers perched on a hilltop, 70 built during World War II and the remaining 10 throughout the subsequent Cold War when the Danish military used the site as a base.Many of the most prominent bunkers have themes and stories to tell. I walked inside the command bunkers where important and strategic decisions were made, and medical bunkers that were designed to look after the sick and wounded.I learned about the North European Pipeline System (NEPS) that ran from North Jutland to Germany and weaved its way across railways, streams and even private property. Bangsbo is part of Hitler’s infamous Atlantic Wall bunker system designed to slow down or stop an Allied counterattack. What’s it REALLY Like in DENMARK? Driving Sæby to Frederikshavn 🇩🇰 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-06-08 | Driving the East Coast of the North Jutland Peninsula in Denmark from the pearl of Denmark's east coast Sæby to the ports of Frederikshavn - the road trip continues. 🇩🇰 See all my NORTH JUTLAND videos → bit.ly/mwt_NorthJutlandSæby is a charming but quiet Danish town with colourful streets and a recently revitalised harbour. Fishing boats and yachts bobble up and down on the water and dog walkers frequent the long sand and shell filled beaches. Inland Sæby Church dominates the skyline and the well kept cemetery provides a place to ponder. I followed the river from the sea to Sæby Watermill (Sæby Vandmølle) which ended up being my favourite place in the town. The old water mill was built in 1710 and features a timber design - these days it’s the star of the show appearing on postcards and posters across Denmark. After learning more about the harbour I drove to my accommodation for the night which was in the nearby village of Understed. I’ll give you a tour and tell you how much it cost for me to stay there for one night. To end the day I took a short drive into Frederikshavn and explored the main shopping and dining areas. North Jutland is well regarded and frequently visited by Danes but lacking international acclaim and visitors. Until now, anyway!My drive up the east coast of Northern Jutland begins in Hals, a small town overlooking the Limfjord as it runs into the Kattegat Sea. I started my day by exploring a small forested region where I found some secret World War II bunkers officially called The Bunkers at Nordmandshage.In the town I visited Hals Church (Hals Kirke) which was gleaming a brilliant white which contrasted beautifully with the blue sky. The attached cemetery was well kept and I enjoyed seeing the old Viking Ship, baptismal font and organ inside. From there I walked to the centre of town which was only about 10 minutes away.I saw the large anchor on the green and a massive Whale Jawbone that Captain Klitgaard had brought back from the Barents Sea in 1868. It still stands outside his old house to this day, well sort of. I’ll give you the whole story in the video!Hals started out as a fishing village and so my next mission was to visit the harbour where most of the fishermen would operate from. Things are a bit different these days but it’s still possible to recognise signs of the past - boat sheds, ship builders, old storage units and warehouses - it’s changed a bit over time but it’s maintained its character.Take a look at this video if you’re looking for places to visit and things to see in Hals Denmark. Before getting on the road however I wanted to spend one day in North Jutland’s largest city of Aalborg.I spent the morning walking along the waterfront, admiring the gigantic cruise liners, learning about Aalborg Castle (Aalborghus Slot) and soaking in some of the atmosphere along the narrow shopping streets of Aalborg Old Town.The most prominent and happening place in the Old Town is Jomfru Ane Gade - a vibrant pedestrian street lined with bars and restaurants. I stayed at the Hotel Jomfru Ane which is located on that street so while passing I’ll give you a tour of my room and tell you about the hotel.I found Aalborg Cable Park, the peace and tranquility of Østre Anlæg and the groovy artistic Karolinelund where graffiti and street art is not only permitted but encouraged. On my way back I found Budolfi Church, Aalborg Kloster which started out as a 15th century Catholic monastery and the medieval Aalborg Historical Museum.The sightseeing continued throughout the afternoon with a stroll out to Aalborg Tower (Aalborgtårnet) and then an elevator ride up to the top. The tower was built in 1933 for the North Jutland Exhibition but was deemed too expensive to dismantle afterwards so here it still stands.Finally I headed back towards the waterfront and a small neighbourhood of wooden houses called Fjordbyen. It was unlike anything else I’d seen in Aalborg and quickly became my favourite place to visit in the city. The area was awash with locally run and trend setting museums, cafes and eateries. Many of the old wooden shacks were previously used by local fishermen to store their equipment. Historic MARKET TOWN of MORPETH in Northumberland England 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-05-18 | A tour of the historic market town of Morpeth in the English county of Northumberland. We’ll see stepping stones across the River Wansbeck, the site of an old castle, a clock tower & the Market Square.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKMorpeth is a small town that packs a lot of punch and as such you can easily explore it on foot in a couple of hours. I started my visit at the Premier Lodge where I got checked before giving you a tour of the room.I walked down to the historic market square where for centuries a popular market was held. Traders would sell everything from fruit and vegetables to salt and even livestock - which would be slaughtered on the square for the right price. I’ll then tell you about the Old Clock Tower as we walk down to the River Wansbeck.The River Wansbeck was one of my favourite parts of the town and whilst walking alongside it there’s plenty to see and do. Carlisle Park is an interesting area, stepping stones cross the water, there’s a playground and bowling green as well as a couple of interesting bridges. The Oldgate Bridge has an unusual history and connects the waterside with the market square through Oldgate Street.I’ll show you a water ladder for fish called Oliver’s Mill Fish Pass and then tell you about the crazy story of Telford Bridge which involves an unpopular toll booth and the destruction of a perfectly good pedestrian bridge next to it. Is This REALLY North-East ENGLAND? 🏴 (Tynemouth, Whitley Bay & Blyth) Matt Whitings Europe 2025-05-11 | A bright & sunny day driving part of England’s North East coastline, starting in Tynemouth just outside of Newcastle, through Whitley Bay & St Mary’s Lighthouse to Blyth.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKThis mini road trip begins in the small but charming seaside towns of Tyne & Wear and culminates further up the northern English coastline in Northumberland. Despite a chilly breeze blowing in from the sea the sun was shining and the sky was blue. Perfect weather for a drive.I started the trip in Tynemouth and parked up to take a stroll through town. I walked up to the Collingwood Monument and learned why there’s such a massive statue of Vice Admiral Lord Cuthbert Collingwood peering over the mouth of the River Tyne.From there I walked past Tynemouth Castle & Priory which led into Front Street and the impeccable Long Sands Beach. I then drove to Whitley Bay where I visited the Spanish City Building and Whitley Bay Beach.On the north side of the beach I discovered the historic St Mary’s Lighthouse which is perched on St Mary’s Island and surrounded by a nature reserve where Grey Seals tend to congregate.Finally I drove to Blyth which was a big industrial town and a place where coal from the surrounding coalfields was loaded into boats and shipped from. ANGEL of the NORTH & SOUTH SHIELDS | Exploring NORTHERN ENGLAND 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-05-04 | Visiting the impressive Angel of the North Sculpture in Gateshead England before taking a short drive to South Shields on the mouth of the River Tyne.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKMillions of people drive past the Angel of the North every day but considerably less grab the opportunity to park up and take a stroll over to the actual sculpture. Well that’s what I did! And I’m glad I was able to do so.The Angel is a nod of appreciation to Northern England and its industrial past. It acknowledges the mining communities, steel workers and railway builders that changed the world only a few centuries ago. Whilst there I’ll talk about its impressive size, iconic appearance and sturdy construction. The Angel of the North is a fascinating sculpture and one that you’ve got to visit if driving past. After finding my way out of the field I jumped back in my car and drove about 20 minutes east to a small town called South Shields. The seaside town boasts the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, the relaxing South Marine Park and as it turns out a flavoursome fish and chip van serving all types of fast food. We’ll visit the famous castle, bridges, shopping streets and learn about the history of this northern city.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKI’ll start off my one day in Newcastle by crossing the city’s most famous landmark - the epic Tyne bridge which is a steel and granite single spanned arched bridge opened in 1928. From the bridge we’ll get some wonderful views across the city and see plenty of pigeons. Next we’ll walk through the Black Gate and buy a ticket to enter the New Castle as I tell you the story of how Newcastle got its name. There’s plenty of train tracks, ruined fortifications and Union Jack flags to keep us entertained. I’ll stop off at the Victoria Monument and then visit the impressive Newcastle Cathedral. Whilst there I’ll tell you about its turbulent history and explore inside.There’s no doubt in my mind that Newcastle city centre is underrated. The architecture, grand buildings, colourful street art and pulsing atmosphere make it a great place to hang out. I found the best spot at the confluence of Grainger Street, Grey Street and Blackett Street where the Earl Grey Statue stands. Earl Grey was a former British Prime Minister so we’ll delve into his legacy and why he got his own statue in the most prominent spot in town.After a bite to eat I walked through the Victorian era Victoria Shopping Arcade, past some of the city’s former defensive walls, across Chinatown and onto St James’ park - the home of Newcastle United Football Club. I spent some time looking at the Sir Bobby Robson Memorial and some of the historic photographs displayed at St James’ Park underground station, including the famous Vinnie Jones & Paul Gascoigne one!With that I walked across the city to the entrance of the Victoria Coal Tunnel and learnt about the part Newcastle played in the industrial revolution, including what the tunnels were used for and how it all operated. Following this I took a gentle stroll through Ouseburn Valley - admiring the tall viaduct, micro breweries and quiet brook I found at the bottom.As afternoon turned into evening I returned to the banks of the River Tyne, admired the humongous Baltic Flour Mill, soaked in some of the atmosphere and got ready to enjoy a bit of Newcastle’s famous nightlife. Is one day in Newcastle enough? No! Why is YORK So Famous? A Tour of the City 🇬🇧 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-04-13 | York is a very famous city in England, join me as I take a tour and investigate why! Whilst there I’ll explore the landmarks and attractions that make York an unmissable place to visit if you want to see some of England beyond London.I started at the National Railway Museum which has a donation based entrance fee. Inside are over a thousand steam trains, carriages and other artefacts telling the story of the Great British railway over the ages.Some fascinating exhibits include the Mallard, Percy Station Bridge, the Flying Scotsman and a section of the Eurostar tunnel connecting England with France. There’s also many supporting displays including old ticket machines, signal boxes, station signs, lighting equipment, gates and training material - all available for viewing.Once I’d left the museum I took a 10 minute walk back into the centre of York to see what else makes this city so famous. I followed a set of steps up to the extensive defensive walls that were built to defend the city in the 13th century - which is on top of an earth bank containing fragments of an even older wall that dates back to Roman times.From there I got some great views of the gigantic York Minster that turns out to be the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. I was so impressed I decided to head over to have a look around. I bought a ticket and climbed the central tower which provided some wonderful birds eye views across the city.I continued my walk around York by heading into the oldest and quaintest of streets called the Shambles. It’s a well preserved part of the city with buildings dating back over 500 years and a historic market place next door. Harry Potter fans tend to assemble around some of the shops as the Shambles was used as a filming location for the Philosopher's Stone.This video will show you some of the amazing attractions available in York, some free and others paid. DON’T Mess With the BRITISH MILITARY! Bombs & Beaches in South-West Wales 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-04-06 | Exploring unlocked churches, golden beaches & the beautiful Angle Peninsular in Pembrokeshire south-west Wales - all whilst trying to avoid a live fire training exercise at the Castlemartin Military base.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKI extended my trip in South West Wales to continue exploring the Angle Peninsula with the hope of making it all the way across to Angle Beach.There was just one problem though. The British army were engaged in a live-fire exercise at the Castlemartin Training Centre and so a large part of the Pembrokeshire coast was closed to public access.I changed my plans and headed to the village of Warren where I found an unlocked church to look over. St Mary’s Church dates back to Norman times and has extensive links to the service men and women who have served at Castlemartin over the years.It felt peculiar to be alone in an old church whilst the sound of machine guns and tanks echoed through the air.Back on the road I drove to Freshwater West Beach which is blessed with picture perfect golden sand and an array of tall dunes between the beach and the road.I drove through the town of Angle on the Angle Peninsula and towards the west coast and a section of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path that led past a number of disused lookout bunkers and some majestic coastal scenery.I passed the closest point to Thorne Island and took a few moments to talk about the sea fortress that’s built upon it. So Many HIDDEN GEMS on the PEMBROKESHIRE COAST in WALES 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-03-30 | One day in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in Wales visiting the town of Pembroke, the Stackpole Estate, Barafundle Bay Beach, Broadhaven Beach & a secret chapel named Saint Govan's.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKThe Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is packed full of hidden gems and spectacular sights. From rugged cliffs to golden sand beaches there’s something for everyone - some accessible by small narrow country roads and others by scenic walking trails and winding footpaths. I started my day with a walk around the Welsh town of Pembroke where I visited the beautiful mill pond, the historic Pembroke Castle, Main Street with its mixture of Georgian and Victorian buildings as well as a prominent Clock Tower painted in red.From Pembroke I drove down to the south coast where I found the wonderful Stackpole Estate which if I’d been better organised would have been a whole day activity. Stackpole is owned and operated by the National Trust and features a mansion with lots of incredible wonders throughout the estate. Some of these include the Stackpole Quay, the stunning Barafundle and Broadhaven beaches, the over 200 year old Eight-Arch Bridge and an enchanting area called the Walled Gardens which is where I found some old Victorian greenhouses, a unique water tank used by the estate’s gardiners and a bat cave. I was also lucky enough to find the mysterious Lorts cave with its isolation making the experience all the more surreal. I continued my walk along the coastal path passing sea stacks, lookout points, secluded beaches and caves until I arrived at a set of steep steps leading down between two cliffs. At the bottom close to the ocean was the abandoned Saint Govan's Chapel. Staying at a HOSTEL in SOUTH WALES + PEMBROKESHIRE COASTAL PATH 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-03-23 | A tour of my hostel (YHA Manorbier) in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in South Wales, I’ll tell you how much it costs and what it was like. I’ll also talk about the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKAfter staying at the YHA Manorbier for a couple of nights it was time to check out and get on my way. Before I do though I’ll give you a tour of the hostel including the dormitory, the facilities, the local area & I’ll share what it was like and how much I paid.We’ll then take a walk along the beautiful coastline of south wales and see what it’s like in the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. I’ll show you two incredible places within easy walking distance of the hostel. The first one is called Pembrokeshire Church Door Cove, which is a natural window that has appeared in the rugged rocks below the hostel. There’s a set of steel steps leading down to a rocky beach area that offers striking views out towards this natural phenomenon. Secondly we’ll walk along until we arrive at a secluded beach called Skrinkle Haven - unfortunately the route down was blocked but I did manage to get some great views of it with the drone.We’ll continue our walk along a section of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path until we arrive at Manorbier Beach. There I’ll tell you all about the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and how it came to be. TOUR of TENBY | ULTIMATE Welsh SEASIDE TOWN 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-03-16 | An ultimate day and tour of Tenby, Wales - a stunning Welsh seaside town with glorious golden beaches, colourful waterfront properties, defensive walls, a stone castle & plenty of little lanes and streets.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKI visited Tenby whilst driving along the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast in south-west Wales. The weather was misty and a low fog hung over the beach - I wasn’t planning on any sunbathing so as long as it stayed dry the weather was great for a sightseeing stroll around the town. I started off on the beach, one of three as it turned out. The North Beach, Castle Beach and South Beach are all glorious and with a low tide it’s possible to walk out for miles (seemingly!). There I’ll talk about the history of Tenby and why so many defensive structures were built in the town.I’ll tell you about my morning which was pretty much rained off thanks to a storm passing through the area. I did however get to see a little of Amroth, Summerhill, Wisemans Bridge and Saundersfoot.Back in Tenby and I walked through the waterless harbour which was fascinating to see at low tide. Boats and ships sitting on the harbour floor is a sight to behold and it was cool to walk between them as I made my way to higher ground.Next stop was Castle Hill and the scene of Tenby Castle. I’ll talk about the history of the castle, tell you about the Prince Albert Statue, and introduce you to some of the best views of Tenby. From there we’ll visit the old defensive walls and towers that add another dimension to this stunning historic town. I came here thinking that the seaside was the only reason to visit but boy was I wrong.I also hung around the old town for a bit, filming the church and some of the local bars and taverns that keep the tourists entertained throughout the evening. KNOWING When To TURN BACK | WILD DAY in the BRECON BEACONS 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-03-09 | Exploring the Rhonda Valley & Brecon Beacon in South Wales including the Rhigos Viewpoint, Treorchy, Henrhyd Falls, some wild country roads & a mountain hike that nearly ended in disaster.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKMy day started in the small town of Treorchy in the Rhonda Valley of southern Wales where I had stayed for the night. I got up early, grabbed some breakfast and launched the drone to get some incredible shots of the lush green valley walls partially covered in fog and cloud.I had a few stops planned and the first one was an overlook called Rhigos Viewpoint which presented winding country roads, a mysterious reservoir, plenty of fields and sloping meadows as well as a distant glimpse of the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog).I drove next to the magnificent Henrhyd Falls which has a drop of 27 metres (90 feet) and is the tallest waterfall in south Wales. A short but steep hike is required to reach it and whilst there you can walk on a ledge to see the back of the waterfall and the wonderful perspective of looking through the water and into the plunge pool and gorge. With that I was back in the car and driving north through some spectacular countryside and scenery that showcased how stunning the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog) can be. Waterfalls, little stone houses and a few sheep were all part of my unforgettable journey. Next up was a spot of walking in the mountains but things didn’t turn out as I planned. I’d heard of a hike Llyn y Fan Fach, Llyn y Fan Fawr, and The Carmarthen Fans Circular and even though it was a tough long trail I really wanted to experience it. The hike followed a stream past old mills and plant buildings to a lake nested below a steep mountain. It then weaved up to a ridge that circled the first lake and led off to a second. Unfortunately despite my best efforts I didn’t make it all the way - I really wanted to but the weather had other plans for me. Defeated, I headed back to the car in the pouring rain and tried to continue my exploration of the Brecon Beacons through the glass of the windscreen. A Hike for WATERFALL LOVERS! 4 WATERFALL TRAIL in the BRECON BEACONS 🏴 Matt Whitings Europe 2025-03-02 | Taking on the classic 4 waterfall hike in the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog) of South Wales. I chose an alternative starting point (Comin Y Rhos) and followed the trail in a clockwise direction.🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKWelcome to Waterfall Country in South Wales and a unique hike through the Brecon Beacons National Park featuring 4 incredible waterfalls. The main trail gets you most of the way but smaller link trails are needed to access the various plunge pools found right at the bottom.Waterfall number 1 is called Sgwd Clun-Gwyn which translates to ‘Fall of the White Meadow’. I then crossed a small bridge and walked about 2-30 minutes to Waterfall number 2 called Sgwd yr Eira which translates to ‘Waterfall of the Snow’.Waterfall number 3 is called Sgwd y Pannwr which translates to ‘Fall of the Fuller’ and is located in a wild, rocky and overgrown section of the park. It’s as beautiful as it is rugged and raw. Finally waterfall number 4 is called Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn and translates to ‘Lower Fall of the White Meadow’.The Four Waterfall trail is circular so can be followed in either direction, the numbers I’ve used for the waterfalls are not official and I have added them simply in the order that I encountered them.The trail is easy to follow using a combination of information signs and maps posted throughout the hike. I parked and began the trek at an alternative point called Comin Y Rhos which has a small car park and proper entrance. I took the aptly named quiet route from Cwm Gwdi car park to the north of the summit. 🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here → bit.ly/mwt_UKThe Cwm Gwdi trail to the summit of Pen y Fan is a quieter alternative to the Storey Arms route that has been nicknamed ‘the Motorway’ due to its popularity with hikers trying to reach the highest peak in South Wales. I can confirm that it is indeed quieter and on my way up to the summit I only passed another 9-10 people.The path starts off fairly muddy and I walked across a grassy meadow and over a few stiles until I found a rocky trail that started climbing in elevation. That took me up to a wide ridge where I got some spectacular views across the valley to my left and the glorious hotch-potch of fields to my right. Pen y Fan is located inside the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog) and its summit is located at 886 metres (2,907 ft) above sea-level. I followed the ridge along and arrived at the first of three steep sections that would lead me up to the top. Each section got steeper and more rugged but eventually I crawled up to the peak and touched the trig point. At the top I found plenty of other hikers who had taken the busier Storey Arms route, I found a pretty spot to sit and eat my lunch and then I set off for the car park. I checked out of my hotel and joined a walking tour to learn about the city’s history and most visited places. After the tour I set off exploring Gothenburg solo, just me and the camera on a mission to make the best vlog of Gothenburg I could.I started at Skansen Kronan - a hilltop former fortress with sublime panoramic views across the city. From there I walked down a hundred steps, through Haga Church and into the trendy shopping streets of the Haga neighbourhood. Haga is a cool place lined with cafes, independent shops, local bakeries, small pubs and quaint squares. A few years ago this was the place you’d find all the locals but it’s fair to say that the tourists have joined them there too!I’ll show you the Järntorgsbrunnen, a fountain and set of sculptures offering a nod of appreciation to the city’s connection with the shipping and iron trade. We’ll talk about the Feskekörka, or Fish Church, which is a historical setting where hundreds of years ago local fishing boats would sail into the canal and drop their days catch in the various fish markets and auctions found inside. Opposite is an industrial area and the remnants of a defensive wall that previously secured the city - we’ll visit those places too.In Gustav Adolfs Torg I’ll tell you about the history of Gothenburg and how Gustav Adolf shaped the city into what it has become today. The harbour area has the look and feel of a remote fishing village with colourful wooden houses and small boats setting the scene. Looking upwards there’s a rocky hilltop featuring an observation deck & some sensational views across the island.The walk to the top was pleasant and I got to see a small lake, a wooded area and some wildlife along the route to the Valen Viewpoint. After that I walked through the village and enjoyed the quiet calm evening without cars or traffic - an unusual feeling in Europe.My final spot of sightseeing was to join a trail that led me around the coastline of the island. GOTHENBURG’S SOUTHERN ARCHIPELAGO 🇸🇪 | Brännö & Galterö Matt Whitings Europe 2025-01-26 | I caught a ferry and visited the small rocky islands of Brännö & Galterö in the Southern Gothenburg Archipelago of Western Sweden. 🇸🇪 See all my SWEDEN videos → bit.ly/mwt_swedenI’ll tell you how I got there and which trams and ferries I caught. Together we’ll take a walk around the island and do some good old fashioned exploring.Although cold and overcast it turned out to be a great day to visit and I learned loads about the island's history & heritage.I disembarked the ferry at Brännö Rödsten and headed up to the Pilot’s House located at the highest point on the island. This is where sea pilots of old used to be stationed whilst waiting for ships heading for the port of Gothenburg. When spotted they would head down to the shore, jump in a small boat & then head out to take over the larger vessel and safely guide it to its destination.I visited the island's only shop, the Brännö Lagårds Museum located in a 200 year old barn and the village church. From there I walked past the swimming area and harbour before heading to another nearby island connected by a bridge.Galterö is a nature reserve with scenic coves, sandy beaches and plenty of sea views. It’s a city of waterfalls, canals & innovation. 🇸🇪 See all my SWEDEN videos → bit.ly/mwt_swedenI caught a train from Gothenburg Central Station and travelled about 50 miles north to the little known city of Trollhättan - somewhere off the tourist trail and a place most international travellers have never heard of.I was expecting a city with busy streets and a hectic vibe but found a beautiful canal park with waterfalls, locks and a nature reserve. Trollhättan is a city different from most of the others I’ve visited.And that’s why I’m glad I could make this video. I really enjoyed my day and would genuinely recommend it to anyone visiting the area. It’s an easy and quick trip from Gothenburg with regular trains and a fair price.My day began down by the river where I found a rather unique lifting bridge called the Järnvägsbron - it consisted of 4 large concrete towers and a pulley system capable of lifting an entire railway bridge up to allow ships to pass underneath. I then walked along a series of islands and up towards a viewing area complete with steel walkways that reached out of the hillside like a plank on a boat, and overlooked thewaterfalls and rapids.Seeing and hearing the waterfall thundering down the Hansenplatsen channel was my favourite part of the day. I learned about the former industrial area where for centuries mills and plants would use the power of the water for manufacturing.Further on I passed the King’s Cave, Trollhättan Church and Olidan Power Plant before strolling along the riverside and past the canal locks and forested parkland. I’ll also show you my Airbnb on Gardiner Street & tell you how much I paid for 2 nights. I flew into and out of Dublin Airport & used the Dublin Express to get me into the city.My walk around Dublin City Centre starts on the north side of the River where I walked through one of the main shopping areas called O’Connell Street. This area is named after Irish Nationalist Daniel O’Connell and there is a large statue erected in his memory overlooking the bridge.We’ll talk about the Easter Rising & the General Post Office building (GPO) which was used as a headquarters during the uprising of 1916. From there I’ll visit the Dublin Spire & stroll down Henry Street.Next we’ll head to the Ha’penny bridge that crosses the River Liffey and I’ll tell you about its history and significance. 3 CHRISTMAS MARKETS in 1 NIGHT (Bolzano, Trento & Verona) 🇮🇹 Matt Whitings Europe 2024-12-22 | My mission is to visit 3 amazing Italian Christmas markets in one night courtesy of a train journey from Bolzano to Trento and then onto Verona. Merry Christmas from Northern Italy!🇮🇹 See all of my ITALY videos here → bit.ly/mwt_ItalyThe challenge started in Waltherplatz (Piazza Walther) in the city centre of Bolzano, a place famous for its Christmas markets and colourful decorations. I made it back from the mountains just in time to catch the switching on of the Christmas lights and a few festive songs from the choir. I took a walk around the main Christmas Market of Bolzano before heading across to Piazza Erbe Obstplatz where a year-round fruit and vegetable market dominated the pretty alleyway. Christmas shops, food stalls and a decorated water fountain kept it lively! With all the traditional buildings lit up it was nice to see the place after dark.Next I jumped on a train from Bolzano to Trento where I instantly found the first Christmas market opposite the train station. I headed through the magnificent sight that is Piazza del Duomo di Trento and onto Piazza de Fiera where the largest and most impressive Christmas market of Trento was being held. Under the historic city walls I explored the food and drink stalls before finding the main Christmas tree of the square. Trento looked incredible and was dressed up perfectly for Christmas. There were so many lights and decorations hanging from the old buildings and narrow streets I found it hard to put my camera away. Trento Christmas market is worth the hype and I was really glad I was able to stop by. Just as I started to enjoy the Christmas music it was time to head back to Trento train station and buy a ticket to Verona.Verona Christmas market is on a whole different level. The primary market seemed to be in the stunning Piazza delle Erbe but all the smaller piazzas and squares were full of stalls and stands too. Piazza dei Signori was decorated with lights and tinsel and Cortile del Tribunale made for just as spectacular a setting with historic steps, fun rides and Santa's grotto. The atmosphere was pulsing and it was an experience I’m really glad I had.Visiting 3 Italian Christmas markets in one night was a tight challenge but I had a lot of fun doing it! Bolzano, Trento and Verona are spectacular cities and each has a completely different Christmas market - in fact I’d recommend visiting all three! I bought a ticket to get inside and will give you a tour of the backstage areas and arena floor. Then we’ll head up into the stands for a birds eye view of the entire amphitheatre.I’ll try to imagine what it would have been like to see one of the epic gladiatorial battles & delve into a little bit of Roman history. Tickets can be purchased online but there’s quite often a long queue to get in - for good reason of course. Visiting the Verona Arena is like travelling back in time and catching a glimpse of the Roman Empire in full flow.I’ll also take a walk across the Ponte Pietra Bridge and talk about its construction and rebuilding following the devastation caused during the Second World War. It’s a unique part of Verona and one not to be missed!From there I’ll climb the hundred or so steps up to a Romanesque fortress called Castel San Pietro where some of the most amazing views of Verona await.Last but not least I’ll show you my hotel room at the Locazione Turistica Cittadella close to Verona city centre. Verona is amazing & worth a couple of days of your time! The tour starts close to the Arena Di Verona in a large square called Piazza Bra.Piazza Bra is surrounded by grand architectural wonders on one side and the magnificent Verona amphitheatre on the other. There’s a small park in the centre with the remains of the Braida Gate (Portoni della Brà) close by.A narrow shopping street called Via Giuseppe Mazzini connects Piazza Bra to Verona’s most impressive square Piazza Delle Erbe which as far as I’m concerned is the coolest place in the city. It’s enclosed by old magnificent facades, museums, restaurants and cafes. Overlooking it is the impressively tall Lamberti Tower (Torre dei Lamberti) which I later purchased a ticket for that allowed me up to the very top.Adjoining Piazza Delle Erbe is Piazza Dei Signori and whilst I was there a large Christmas market adorned both. Christmas trees, decorations and colourful lights added to the festive mood. The atmosphere spilled out onto the streets and into the glorious Courtyard of the Old Market (Cortile del Mercato Vecchio)A trip to Verona wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the famous balcony purportedly connected to William Shakespeare's epic love story Romeo & Juliet. The gothic style house is known as Juliet’s House but all is not what it seems - as is often the case. I’ll talk more about the history of Romeo & Juliet and tell the story of how it all came to be.My final walk was alongside the Adige River and out towards an old Roman arch bridge called Ponte Pieter. As I made my way back into the city the afternoon had turned into evening and everything looked totally different. We’ll visit Piazza Duomo Di Trento, Torre Vanga & the hilltop Mausoleum of Cesare Battisti. 🇮🇹 See all of my ITALY videos here → bit.ly/mwt_ItalyTrento is a city worth visiting, it’s positioned between Verona and Bolzano and about an hour's train journey from both. It lies in the wide and beautiful Adige Valley and is surrounded by the magnificent peaks of the Italian Alps.My day started with a walk along the Adige River on route to the old city centre. I took a look around Piazza Duomo Di Trento which is a pretty place to hang out for a while. Whilst enjoying the atmosphere there’s plenty to look at including the Fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno), Trento Cathedral (Duomo Di San Vigilio) and the medley of storefronts and other historic buildings.I’ll show you my hotel room at Ai Tre Portoni which is a short walk from Trento city centre and the main piazza. The room came with breakfast and a shared bathroom.Whilst on my self-created walking tour of Trento I stopped by Trento Castle (Castello del Buonconsiglio) and an old defensive tower called Torre Vanga. Whilst walking around my attention was diverted by an authentic water fountain close to Port'Aquila which is one of the original city gates. I walked to Giardini Pubblici and took a ride on a ferris wheel, one of my favourite fairground rides. As it’s winter and Christmas season I took a walk around the Trento Christmas Market at Mercatino Di Natale Di Trento which is located in Piazza de Fiera. From there I crossed the river and climbed the steps leading to Parco Naturale del Doss Trento and the impressive Mausoleum of Cesare Battisti. DAY TRIP to CASTELROTTO | Dolomites PRETTIEST Village? 🇮🇹 Matt Whitings Europe 2024-11-24 | I caught a bus from Bolzano & enjoyed a day trip in Castelrotto (Kastelruth) - one of the most beautiful villages in the Dolomites with an old castle, quaint church & Mountain Views.🇮🇹 See all of my ITALY videos here → bit.ly/mwt_ItalyBolzano is an incredible city but there’s so much more to see if you’re staying in the area. I’d seen an iconic photograph of a small Italian church positioned perfectly in front of the unmistakable jagged peaks of the Dolomites & wanted to see the real thing. I tracked the image down to Castelrotto (Kastelruth) - a commune and village about 20km from Bolzano & decided to try seeing it with my own eyes.I caught a bus that followed the windy and small roads up into the Italian Alps and was relieved when we arrived about 40 minutes later. I walked out of the village and up to a nearby hill that offered spectacular views across the meadows, fields and villages close by. At the top of the hill is the Kalvarienberg (Colle o Monte Calvario) - a collection of chapels built around the old walls of a mediaeval fortification.If you’ve ever wondered why the Dolomites are called the Dolomites then this vlog is definitely going to be worth a watch. We’ll talk about the origin of the name and the story behind it - which is centred around French mineralogist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu.I’ll show you the picturesque marketplace Krausplatz (Piazza Kraus) and Castelrotto Parish Church along with its iconic steeple. OLDEST CABLE CAR IN ITALY + WINTER HIKING in BOLZANO 🇮🇹 Matt Whitings Europe 2024-11-17 | Ride with me on Italy’s oldest cable car system from Bolzano to Colle (Kohlern). At the top I head into the mountains for a snowy hike to Titschen (Monte Pozza) & some stunning views across the Italian Alps.🇮🇹 See all of my ITALY videos here → bit.ly/mwt_ItalyThis winter hike in the Italian Alps will take me to a magnificent scenic point called Titschenwarte that looks out over the forests and valleys beneath and towards the wonderful snow peaked mountains of the Dolomites. However, during the winter season it’s not the easiest to get to.Once I’d figured out which cable car station to use I bought a ticket and jumped on board. The station in Bolzano housed a timeline with photographs and information about what they called the world’s first cable car system designed for human use. Heading up I admired the terrific views over the city and beyond.Colle (Kohlern) is a very small commune with houses scattered along a small road and a few hotels positioned on the hillside. I found an appealing circular hike on the All Trails app that started in Colle & weaved through the forests up the mountainside to a peak called Titschen (Mount Pozza). Along the way it passed the Titschenwarte viewpoint but not all that many spots where you could see above the tree line and get a view of the surrounding area.The hiking conditions got tougher the higher I went as the temperature descended and the snow got deeper. I saw a few small ponds that were iced over and whilst I was out hiking I didn’t see another person - either the snow had kept them away or they knew something I didn’t!If you’re in Bolzano and looking to do a bit of hiking then I’d recommend this trail. When I heard there was a cable car station close to the apartment it felt like the stars were lining up - I grabbed my camera and backpack and set off.Oberbozen (Soprabolzano) is a small village on the Renon Plateau (Ritten) and is just a twelve minute cable car ride from Bolzano. The journey to the top is breathtaking and crosses pastures, farmhouses and isolated communities as it progresses up the mountain side.At the top you can take a narrow gauge railway called the Rittnerbahn (Trenino del Renon) to Collalbo and the tallest peak in the area the Rittner Horn (Corno Del Renon) - sadly an adventure for another day.Whilst in Oberbozen I did enjoy a walk through the village and a look at lots of pretty houses and hotels overlooking the valley below. I also achieved my goal of finding a spot to appreciate the incredible snow peaked mountains of the Italian Alps as I snacked on my packed lunch.If you’re in Bolzano and looking for interesting places to visit I’d recommend jumping on the cable car to Oberbozen (Soprabolzano) like I did. The mighty Adige River blasts through close to Bolzano central. Due to its proximity and size, Bolzano is known as the Italian Gateway to the Dolomites, a region of the magnificent Italian Alps.I walked through plenty of narrow side streets showcasing the beautiful architecture throughout the city. It was great to visit the local outdoor market which is set amongst pretty lanes and streets before walking over to Bolzano’s most controversial monument - a 1928 World War I memorial called the Victory Monument. Watch the video to find out why it’s so controversial.With that I took a riverside stroll to Castel Roncolo (Runkenstein Castle), enjoying the scenery as I crossed the water and headed up a steep hill towards the fortification. The Final Grand Scene | TINTERN ABBEY to CHEPSTOW in the WYE VALLEY 🇬🇧 [3/3] Matt Whitings Europe 2024-10-27 | Today I’m travelling the stunning Wye Valley National landscape from Tintern Abbey to Chepstow, the ultimate destination of William Gilpin’s historic river boat tours along the River Wye, inspired by the legendary John Egerton.We’ll start at Tintern Abbey where we’ll see the ruins of a 12th century Cistercian abbey located in a beautiful river valley close to a village with the same name. The ruined stone work is a marvellous sight to behold & would have looked spectacular as the participants of the boat tour came around the rivers curve.Heading further into the Wye Valley we’ll stop at Whitestone and walk through the forests to a scenic point overlooking miles of lush rolling country hills. This is where English poet William Wordsworth wrote some of his best work.From the waterside we’ll hike up to a tree lined hilltop in the woods called the Eagles Nest where there’s an overlook revealing some spectacular views of the River Wye horseshoe bend, incredible cliffs and a patchwork of fields and meadows in the valley below. In the distance we’ll be able to spot the mighty Severn Bridge that stretches across the River Severn from England to Wales.Next up we’ll get on some narrow country lanes in search of a trailhead where we can walk down the steep valley cliffs and locate an abandoned mediaeval village called Lancaut. There we’ll enter the seemingly forgotten and forever lost Church of St James, which centuries ago is where we would have found a thriving but small community living in harmony by the river.On the way to Chepstow I’ll call into the Piercefield Estate for a spot of walking and reflect on the memorable journey through the Wye Valley.After a fascinating two days we’ll then set off for Chepstow where I’ll introduce you to a couple of interesting places including the Gloucester Hole and the intricate Old Wye Bridge.
