Daily Cal ASUC Debate 2009 - DAAP on Missed Opportunities on the ASUC
updated
(Paramount is a predominantly-Latina/o and immigrant city that is part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The community’s fightback against the ICE raid at the Home Depot there June 7 helped spark the growing movement to stop, block, and drive ICE out of our communities. BAMN has been leading the community movement to drive out ICE and federal troops from their staging area in the city.)
In response to our protests, vast community fightback and overwhelming public support, the city council passed a lengthy resolution tonight condemning ICE’s and DHS’s presence in Paramount. The council resolution makes clear they stand with the immigrant and broader Latina/o community of Paramount.
-We will keep demanding ICE & federal troops out of Paramount until their staging area is shut down!
-ICE and National Guard: Out of Paramount!
-Stop ICE Raids and Deportations By Any Means Necessary!
-Shut down the ICE and National Guard staging area in Paramount!
-The majority of our country is opposed to the Trump administration and his fascist policies – Trump must be removed now!

On behalf of BAMN, Shanta Driver filed a strongly-worded amicus brief to the Supreme Court that begins:
"No case before the Supreme Court, now or in the foreseeable future, is more important than this case. This case will settle the question of whether the majority of the Court will continue to act as the enabler of President Donald Trump’s plan to make America a fascist nation. If the pro-Trump majority concludes that Donald Trump has the right to amend the Constitution through an executive order, that ridiculous claim will sanction Trump’s belief that he, not the Constitution, is the arbiter of law in this country. If the pro-Trump majority decides that only the states and individuals who challenged his obviously unconstitutional executive order will have the right to a stay while the underlying substantive issues are being adjudicated, then this Court, like the Taney Court that decided Dred Scott v. Sanford, 60 U.S. 393 (1857), will bring this nation closer to another Civil War."

BACKGROUND:
Defend free speech and academic freedom for supporters of the Palestinian struggle!
Support the pro‐Palestine student‐defendant intervention to defeat the pro‐Trump Brandeis lawsuit against UC Berkeley and the UC System
The pro-Trump Brandeis Center has filed a lawsuit against UC Berkeley and the University of California System to deny free speech for students, faculty, and organizations who oppose the Israeli government’s ethnic-cleansing and genocide in Gaza and who support the Palestinian struggle. The Brandeis Center seeks to force the UC Regents and campus administrations to discipline, remove funding, and remove official recognition of students and student organizations who voice support for the Palestinian people, and to create a legal justification for further censorship and repression of speech on college and university campuses.
Pro-Palestine student-defendant intervenors have a right to defend themselves, independent of the University of California administration, against the Brandeis Center’s lawsuit in the UC System. The UC administration has made clear that they cannot and will not adequately defend the free speech rights of pro-Palestine students. This legal intervention, sponsored by BAMN (The Coalition to Defend Integration and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary), is made up of pro-Palestine supporters and activists of the movement around the country.
We call on the UC Regents and presiding Judge James Donato to support the pro-Palestine student-defendant intervention to defeat the pro-Trump Brandeis Center’s lawsuit against UC Berkeley and the UC system.

From BAMN's ongoing series of Public Tribunals to Fight for Full Virtual Learning and to Defeat COVID-19, held on February 12, 2022.
As an organizer for the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration and Immigrant Rights & Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN), Neal Lyons has committed his life to the fight for equality, civil rights and immigrant rights. Mr. Lyons is a dedicated student of science and graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. During the pandemic he began a rigorous study of the science, economics and policy of COVID-19, while making use of the history of previous pandemics. Mr. Lyons possesses an uncanny ability to convey complex scientific and political phenomena in a way that is at once coherent and practical. Most importantly, unlike most public health experts and politicians, Mr. Lyons is unwavering when it comes to speaking the plain truth. The movement for equality and justice can be proud to call Mr. Lyons a leader of its ranks.
SHUT DOWN COVID-19!
SHUT DOWN IN-PERSON SCHOOLS!
STRIKE – WALKOUT – SICKOUT
a few highlights from Neal's presentation:
*Imminent lifting of mask mandates in “liberal” NY, CA, MI. Health implications and economic basis of this policy.
*Why all of BAMN’s demands (see below) must be implemented together in order to effectively Shut Down COVID-19!! Each one individually isn’t enough. Each intervention does something different and accomplishes different aims. What are medical implications of BAMN’s demands?
*both political parties are supporting the immediate dropping of mask mandates. Thus far, CDC disagrees.
*Reminder: Donald Trump said all of his policies were supported by science too! Saying it, doesn’t make it true.
*Policymakers will always choose profit over public health. This has been consistent.
*Masks not well regulated. Lots of counterfeits. Be careful. Don’t get your masks on Amazon. Check out ProjectN95. The ones the federal government are giving away for free are certified N95s not fakes.
*comparing and contrasting BAMN’s demands and the need for the implementation of each of them with the necessity of following all safety rules and regulations when driving a car.
*just because someone is vaccinated against tetanus doesn’t mean they are going to start going around stabbing themselves with rusty nails. That wouldn’t make sense. That’s obviously not safe. Why then would you starting walking around without a mask inhaling lots of COVID-19 even if you are fully vaccinated against COVID?
*Disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on black and Latino communities. The role racism is playing in the pandemic.
*comparison to “driving while black” phenomenon. Sometimes the people who are supposed to be keeping you safe, end up being the people getting you killed. That's what’s happening now. The schools administrators, local officials and other authorities who are charged with keeping us safe are the ones making the decisions that will end up getting us killed or sick. We must force their hands to implement what we need to save lives by building a mass movement with the power to shake the nation.

From BAMN's ongoing series of Public Tribunals to Fight for Full Virtual Learning and to Defeat COVID-19. Held on February 5, 2022, this presentation centers on the economics and politics behind the US’ terrible COVID policies: BAMN COVID-19 & science expert Neal Lyons reviews the latest news and information on the COVID-19 pandemic
As an organizer for the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration and Immigrant Rights & Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN), Neal Lyons has committed his life to the fight for equality, civil rights and immigrant rights. Mr. Lyons is a dedicated student of science and graduate of the University of Michigan. Ann Arbor. Most importantly, unlike most public health experts and politicians, Mr. Lyons is unwavering when it comes to speaking the plain truth. The movement for equality and justice can be proud to call Mr. Lyons a leader of its ranks.
A few highlights from Neal's presentation:
*Bad policies around COVID not just because policymakers are stupid. Although that’s true, their stupidity has real reasoning and real interests behind it.
*US is the world leader in COVID death; US is #1 (total deaths and per capita)
Everyone has same virus coming after them, right? So why is it so bad in US?
*The single biggest factor in mortality, which determines whether you live or die, is what country you live in and that's because of the policies of those countries.
*1 of every 311,000 people in China has died from COVID
*1 of every 400 people in the US has died from COVID
*180x more dead in US than China from COVID
*If US had China rate of death we would just be passing 1000 deaths now!
@1,000,000 dead in the US by April 2022
Australia has 2000 deaths so far; New Zealand 51; China around 5000 (reminder: 1.5 billion people live in China)
*We could have avoided more than 899,000 of the 900,000 deaths from COVID so far in the US if we had just copied what other nations have done
How can simple policies cause so much of a difference?
-Vaccines - mandates, proof of vaccination requirements
-Shutdowns and school closures - studies show 58% reduction in deaths just from school closures alone
-Masks - good quality N95 masks with mandates
-widespread testing and contact tracing so we isolate the infected
Together, these simple policies can save many many lives. BAMN is committed to saving as many as possible.
*A lot of very irresponsible propaganda on all sides - US and China. A lot of anti-China propaganda criticizes China’s “lack of freedom” for implementing lockdowns.
Let’s get real.
In the US, we don’t have the freedom to keep ourselves safe. Either we have forced re-openings or forced lockdowns. Neither one is “freedom”. Only difference is that forced re-openings cause a lot more people to die than the forced lockdowns.
Economic considerations are the main reasons for massive push to re-open schools. This is NOT a conspiracy theory. It is discussed openly and has been since the beginning of the pandemic in various economic journals and articles.
As of September 2020, estimates were that the US economy could face a $15 trillion hit as a result of school closures.
Rivalry between US & China and particular limitations of today’s US economy as sources of US’ decision to be far more reckless in its COVID policies
**The challenge we face is how do we make ourselves more powerful than the small clot of billionaires that currently determine COVID policy? That requires building a movement. And that is what these Public Tribunals are intended to do - to raise the level of consciousness and understanding of leaders and organizers of that movement.
We are not safe, until everyone is safe!
We know the policies exist that can put an end to this pandemic. We just need to fight to get them implemented. BAMN is fighting and organizing to build a movement to do just that.
Join us! @nationalBAMN

Especially during the Omicron variant storm, with the highest levels of Covid-19 deaths since the pandemic began and an increasing number of children and youth hospitalized, virtual learning is essential to contain and defeat the Covid-19 pandemic. Our political leaderships at the local, state, and federal level have failed to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, as the U.S. nears one million deaths, by far the highest death toll of any country in the world. The U.S. stands below more than 60 countries in vaccination levels. Meanwhile, China, a nation of more than one billion people, has barely passed five thousand deaths, and other nations like New Zealand, Australia, and Taiwan, have even less.
Join us to hear a report on the science and global policies of the pandemic. As schools around the country are forced to fully reopen in-person, thousands of middle and high school students have led walkouts against the unsafe conditions in their schools. The brave actions of students and teachers are revealing the truth of unsafe conditions in the schools and the need for 100% full virtual learning for everyone, ignoring the lies of school officials and politicians that are enforcing dangerous policies that threaten the lives of students, teachers, school staff and our communities. We do not have to accept a new way of life that unnecessarily puts our lives and the lives of our loved ones at stake, forcing us to accept thousands of unnecessary deaths simply because rich people want to get richer. We deserve better, but like the Chicago students, we must fight for it, and we must fight independently. Join us to organize and build the student-led movement in your area and nationwide, for virtual learning and to defeat Covid-19.

a few highlights from Neal's presentation:
*This episode is focused on giving organizers the arguments and tools they need to counter the lies of the policymakers, administrators and public health experts.
**Lie #1: "We're doing something!" Just like with the environmental crisis, everyone claims to be doing something, but nothing is actually being done. School districts just say the bare minimum they think it will take to convince families to come back so parents can go to work.
**Lie#2: "Cases are going down. The surge is over. We can all go back to normal." We have now repeated this cycle multiple times during the pandemic.
*Evolution has brought us wave after wave of the virus. Those who tell us these lies pretend evolution doesn't exist.
*"It ain't over 'til its over" (Yogi Berra and Neal Lyons)
*This virus is looking a lot smarter than our public health officials.
**Lie #3: "Schools are the safest place for children to be." Recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows closing schools dramatically reduces the number of cases (62%), the number of deaths (58%) and the rate of transmission in the community as a whole.
*Keeping schools open is really about keeping the economy red-hot.
*When public health officials and school administrators re-open schools, they know they are doubling the amount of cases and deaths.
*Since the pandemic began, in early 2020, the world's 10 richest men have doubled their wealth. That is blood money. That was at the expense of hundreds of thousands of lives in the US and millions of lives worldwide.
*We are not going to sacrifice the lives of the nation's children, of the nation's parents and teachers, everybody for the sake of helping those billionaires make more billions.
*This is an emergency. This is our time to fight. This is our time to lead.

Justice for George Floyd!
Donald Trump Must Go!
* Smaller class-sizes for all.
* Hire more Teachers, Counselors, Nurses, Psychologists, and other Support Staff.
* Defend Special Education programs and the rights of Special Education students, our most vulnerable students. Limit and reduce Special Education class sizes and special education teacher caseloads ("hard caps"). No wholesale "full inclusion."
* Significantly raise Teacher Pay. Teachers deserve equal pay and benefits to surrounding districts.
* Stop the School Closings! No More Charter Schools!
* Adequate text books, up-to-date technology, hands-on experiences, and creative arts and music programs.
* Cancel the debt! Oakland's majority-minority student body has meant that the state has underfunded and under-resourced our district for decades. No separate and unequal education for the youth of Oakland. Institutional racism at the state level has forced our city's public school students and our state's majority minority student population to suffer for too long.
* More AP, Honors, Art, Music, and Theater classes in all our schools. Increase Latina/o, black, Native American, and immigrant student enrollment at UC-Berkeley and all University of California campuses.

BAMN Press Conference Today:
"We Believe Christine Blasey Ford and Stand By Her --
Defeat Kavanaugh's Nomination to the Supreme Court --
No Vote Until Ford Testifies to Senate"
TODAY, Monday, September 17, 7:00 pm
UC Berkeley Sproul Hall steps (near Bancroft + Telegraph)
===================
The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration, and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) salutes Dr. Christine Blasey Ford for her courage. Millions of Americans and defenders of democracy across the globe owe our thanks to her for coming forward with the truth of Brett Kavanaugh's heinous sexual assault. We categorically and unequivocally stand by Dr. Ford. Kavanaugh's abuse of Dr. Ford is consistent with his abuse of the body of American democracy-- his repeated support for unimpeded and authoritarian presidential powers, and his alignment with Donald Trump's abuses of women, immigrants, black, Latina/o, Arab, Muslim, Asian, Native American, and LGBTQ people. There is no question that Kavanaugh, if confirmed, will back Trump in any effort he makes to take over all 3 branches of the federal government, fire Robert Mueller or quash any investigation into his abuses and obstruction of justice, and set the nation on the dangerous road toward a right-wing authoritarian dictatorship, seriously placing the principle of a democratic government in peril. Consistent with his attempted rape of Dr. Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh would eradicate protections of women's rights to choose what happens to our bodies from every standpoint: abortion, rape, you name it.
We must defeat Kavanaugh's nomination. There should be NO VOTE by the Senate on Kavanaugh until Dr. Ford is able to testify in Washington, DC to the Senate. The future of freedom and democracy in the US, already in too short supply, must be defended; Kavanaugh's nomination must be defeated.

First of all: thank you, for letting me read this to you.
I am a Mexican 13 year old boy, who once lived and studied at Berkeley, to be specific at MLK middle school. I was a student of Ms.Felarca. I really enjoyed listening to her and learning from her. I really don’t understand why are we even discussing the fact that she is not being allowed to be a teacher. For 5 months I heard her complainings about the world, racisms and freedom. I admire her, her way of thinking, her way of seeing things.
Who is Yvette Felarca?
She is a freedom fighter, she is a racisms fighter, she wants to make the world a better place and teach kids how to do it, how to think about it, how to act. She wants justice, she wants to make better citizens. Isn’t that what teachers are meant to be?
I want to say that Donald J. Trump has a chance to win the presidency of the U.S. Trump is a racist man, a fascist, and in my point of view “the stupidest man alive”. Lots of people in America support him, and will vote for him. Is that a good thing about U.S education? No! That actually talks bad about U.S’s education. That means that some teachers, the people who are in charge of kids, the future, also support “the stupidest man alive”. We need more fighters like Ms. Felarca. Like once Yvette Felarca said, and I quote: “We need to take them head on, confront them, but with as many people as possible.”
I want racism to stop, to erase from existence and I think that trying to fire Ms.Felarca is a terrible mistake if we want racism to stop. I want to end this by saying this by saying that the key of everything is education, good education, including happiness. I know that you will do the right thing and get Ms. Felarca back. I want to thank everyone in here that support Ms. Felarca because she is one of those teachers who care and help everyone get through the seek of happiness.
Apoyo desde México! Apoyo desde el mundo! Apoyo desde mi corazón! Y apoyo desde la conciencia!
Thank you,
Jerónimo Zarco Mtz.
