Students in the DR and DC fly messages of hope, Skype Cathy Healy 2012-04-12 | Students from the village of Pedro Corto in the Dominican Republic and students from César Chavez Prep in Washington D.C. joined 25,000 other youngsters worldwide who flew kites with messages for a better world on March 21, 2012. The students talked face-to-face about their messages in a Skype call. Sample messages of hope: Pedro Corto--No more violence. More baseball leagues. Take good care of animals. No more garbage. No more deforestation. For all to be equal. Washington DC--Everyone would be treated equally. Lots of shelters to provide for the homeless. Someday war will end. Every culture will unite. The talking kites event is an annual iEARN project, founded and coordinated by iEARN-Israel. The Dominican students were let out of school for two days to participate in a workshop on digital storytelling sponsored by Plan International, Dominican Republic. The workshop, held in the Community Technology Centre, was led by Cathy Healy, Chavez Prep and iEARN-USA, with Carlos Miranda Levy, Educar, Relief 2.0 and Angie Diaz, Plan. The video was shot and produced by Celestino Gonzales for Plan.
DCs Chavez Prep 6th graders talk nuclear radiation Cathy Healy 2012-01-10 | This video shows Chavez Prep's 6th grade geographers talking with two people who had been to the nuclear plant disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine and to Fukushima after the earthquake in Japan damaged the nuclear reactor, asking questions and sending a message of courage to the people of Japan. Multimedia reporter Cathy Healy, who works with Chavez Prep's 9th grade journalists, set up the conversations with National Geographic Magazine's Mike Edwards, now retired, who covered the Chernobyl disaster for several years, and Internet expert Carlos Miranda Levy, founder of Relief 2.0 with Stanford University's Peace Innovation Lab, who has been to Japanese schools affected by the Fukushima disaster. Mr. Miranda Levy lives in the Dominican Republic. After meeting in person with the Chavez Prep students, Mr. Edwards repeatedly praised the students' intelligence and courteousness. Cèsar Chavez Prep is a D.C. public charter school for 6-9 grades, specializing in public policy.
At-risk Brazilian teenager returns to DC as TV journalist Cathy Healy 2011-04-26 | Brazilian TV Reporter Diogo Alcantara first visited Washington, D.C. as a 2002 Ambassador of Hope. The two-way exchange between at-risk teenagers in the capitols changed Diogo's life. As he said when he returned to DC ten years later, he had always wanted to be a journalist and to travel, but he was from a poor family and his dreams seemed too far away. Diogo and the others raised their own money to travel to DC, where they stayed with host families. They returned home with confidence that they could achieve. Diogo graduated from the extremely competitive J-School at the University of Brasília and now covers the presidential beat for STV Network, the second largest in Brazil. Cathy Healy interviewed him.
2011 UW Intl Honors Pallavi Choudhuri Cathy Healy 2011-04-08 | Pallavi Choudhuri came to the University of Wyoming from Calcutta, India in the fall of 2004 to pursue her PhD in Economics. Since then, she has been president of the Indian Students' organization on campus, MILAAP, which continues the traditions that she established such as visiting local schools, youth programs, and civic organizations, as well as working with other campus organization to raise funds for "Keep Girls in School" project. In addition to her work with MILAAP and her PhD research, Pallavi serves as a mentor and tutor for student-athletes.

Tom was unable to attend because he was conducting research in the Dominican Republic on the impact of European tourism and its economic and social impact on the sustainability of native cultures. John Williams, a graduate assistant in the political science department, accepted the award on Lennon's behalf.
2011 International Citizen UWyo_Dean Oliver Walter Cathy Healy 2011-04-07 | Dr. Oliver Walter, dean of the University of Wyoming's College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded the International Citizen of the Year award by the UW International Board of Advisors on March 27, 2011. DeanWalter was named to his position in 1989. Walter was introduced by Dr. Jean Garrison, director of International Studies, who praised the political scientist for his work in furthering international education, including teaching international students the required American and Wyoming government classes. In1989, when she graduated from UW, it was "exotic to have studied abroad," Garrison noted. But under Walter's leadership, more than 20% of Arts & Sciences graduates have studied abroad--the university's overall goal--and A&S is aiming for 30% of its grads having the experience within the next three years.

Diogo always wanted to travel around the world and be a journalist, but "it seemed to distant to me because I am from a poor family." When he was 13, Diogo applied to become an Ambassador of Hope, a project of the DC-Brasilia chapters of Partners of the Americas. Now in it's 14th year, the award-winning program exchanges teen-agers from at-risk environments between the two capital cities. Each city funds its own students and hosts the visitors. Students preparation includes public service.Diogo was in the Ambassadors II group. The fifth cycle is in the planning stage now (2010).

The flight on Buddha Air takes about an hour and passes about 100 miles of Himalayan peaks until it reaches Everest, the highest mountain in the world. The aircraft passes the peak and turns back slowly to return to Kathmandu. A seats get the peaks on the way to Everest, C seats get the view on the way back. Passengers can go to the cockpit, too, for better views.
