Shares of the company's stocks fell more than 18% on Monday after the announcement, and the news sent shockwaves around Asian exchanges, with property development firms taking the biggest beatings. Country Garden had been the sector's largest player by sales, but now it joins the ranks of other developers drowning in debt like Evergrande. The company still has a grace period until September 6 to come up with the cash for creditors and released a statement saying it's confident the Chinese property sector will rebound. But that comeback can't come fast enough for Beijing, which has relied on real estate for nearly three decades as an engine of economic growth.

The Federal Trade Commission, which enforces laws against companies gaining monopolies over markets, could not convince the court that Microsoft's purchase would harm consumers or degrade market competition. Activision has made some blockbuster games, like Call of Duty, which are now available on both Microsoft's XBOX and Sony's PlayStation consoles. The FTC argued Microsoft's acquiring Activision would give it an unfair advantage over competitors, but Microsoft said the market for games is big enough for competition to continue.

West Texas Intermediate broke above $73 a barrel Tuesday as Chinese officials increased efforts to keep money flowing into the country's troubled real estate sector. It's saddled by high levels of debt and property prices that aren't rising as fast as they used to before the pandemic. That means construction companies and regional governments that invested money in housing aren't making their money back as fast as they'd planned. That's scared other investors off from big bets on new buildings. Beijing is hoping to break that cycle with more forgiving loan repayment plans.

Responding to the latest developments, Twitter owner Elon Musk said "Competition is fine, cheating is not". Musk bought Twitter last October for $44B and has introduced controversial changes to the platform that have prompted many users to abandon the site.

Who even decides what is or is not misinformation? In one way or another, every country in the world is dealing with these kinds of questions, and none has found an answer that works flawlessly for the state, society, and business. In the US, a judge has issued an injuction that prohibits those kinds of suggestions, saying they unfairly target dissent by the right wing. The decision may not stand up to an appeal, but the difficult questions around speech, truth and safety on the Internet will remain. Wilson Dizard has more.
