U.S. Department of Energy - Cinderella Disco Ball (PSA, 1980)

This one has the motif of Cinderella heading from a "Disco Ball" in a huge gas-guzzling vehicle to highlight how much energy we thought we had, and how, as supplies ran low, her modern "coach" turned into the equivalent of a pumpkin, and as this ends, she is driven off by her prince on a bicycle - all to emphasize the importance of saving energy.

Also as a bonus, a WFLD Lost in Space bumper from WFLD Channel 32 (on which this PSA aired), and partial closing credits with voiceover promos for Underdog and Tennessee Tuxedo by Dr. Don Rose who tells us, “We love ya - we love ya a lot!”

The books that are offered as part of this deal include "Dr. Seuss's ABC," "Hand, Hand, Fingers and Thumb," "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish," "Inside, Outside, Upside Down" (an early Berenstain Bears book), and "The Foot Book" (some of the titles offered were in the "Bright and Early Books for Beginning Beginners" series).

WGN Channel 9 - Chicago Is... - Wicker Park (1979)

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-06-10 | Here's an installment of "Chicago Is...", one of a series of public affairs interstitials from WGN Channel 9, this time spotlighting Wicker Park on Chicago's Near Northwest Side, as hosted by Beverly Griffith of the Old Wicker Park Committee (2215 West North Avenue) (also associated with the Wicker Park Neighborhood Council). (This was broadcast after an edition of Bugs Bunny & Friends.)

(TECHNICAL FONT NOTE: The lower-third is still in the old-style Chiron version of the News Gothic Bold font, before its replacement with a newer CG system later in the year.)

In this brief travelogue, Ms. Griffith goes into the general area and its boundaries, the large homes located therein (many dating back to the Columbian Exposition of 1893), who founded it (Charles and Joel Wicker, in 1870, as a gift to the city), its growth after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the changes from World War I, its decline during the Great Depression, its recent comeback from an influx of newer-generation professionals, community groups such as that she's part of, a restoration of the homes in that section, and the changes in demographics over the years. Among its more famous residents was the pianist Ignace Jan Paderewski.

WFLD Channel 32 - The Partridge Family - Youre Only Young Twice (Complete Broadcast, 11/26/1981)📺

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-06-07 | Here's a favorite new discovery of ours - from Fuzzy's favorite TV station of the day and his favorite time period for the station, namely the Field Communications era. (thanks to Kyle McElravy for alerting us to the tape this came from being on Ebay!)

Here's the complete broadcast of a rerun of The Partridge Family episode "You're Only Young Twice" (S03E06, originally broadcast over the ABC Network, and thus in Chicago via WLS Channel 7, on October 20th 1972), followed by a Bonus of the first eight minutes of a repeat of The Courtship of Eddie's Father episode "Pain," (S01E06, first telecast on ABC, and in Chicago via WLS, on October 22nd 1969), all as presented over WFLD Channel 32 (via those beat-up16mm film prints we all loved so much).

In the Partridge episode, Danny (Danny Bonaduce), tired of being a child, tries to enmesh himself in the "grown-up" decisions - and ends up annoying everyone. Among the guest cast are Charlotte Rae (years before Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life) as Dr. Beecher, plus Bruce Kimmel in the first of two appearances as Richard Whipple (and third of his five appearances altogether on the show), Maggie Wellman as Molly, and Patti Cohoon as Gloria.

As typical of WFLD presentations, there are bumpers indicating start and end of commercial breaks, with stills from the series and "zoomin" show title with Field-era 32 logo.

ABC Network - Tales of the Gold Monkey - Cooked Goose (Complete Broadcast, 3/4/1983) 📺 🐒

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-06-05 | Here's the complete broadcast of a first-run episode of the short-lived adventure series Tales of the Gold Monkey, "Cooked Goose" (S01E17), as broadcast over the ABC Network via its Chicago outlet, WLS Channel 7.

This program (from the producers of Magnum, P.I.), set in the 1930's - and no doubt "inspired" by "Raiders of the Lost Ark" - starred Stephen Collins as Jake Cutter, ex-fighter pilot turned operator of an air cargo service on the island of "Bora Gora" in the South Pacific; his companions are mechanic Corky (Jeff MacKay), a government spy contact named Sarah Stickney White (Caitlin O'Heaney, later to star in another short-lived series, The Charmings, in 1987-88), and - no doubt the most popular character in the show - a one-eyed Jack Russell terrier named Jack.

Also features Marta DuBois as Princess Koji; John Calvin as "Rev." Willie Tenboom, a Nazi spy; John Fujioka as the Princess' bodyguard, Todo; and Roddy McDowall (of everything fame) as Bon Chance Louie.

In this episode, a clipper pilot honeymooning on the island (and old acquaintance of Jake's) is brutally beaten and his new wife is abducted by mercenaries, and Jake's attempt to find her is complicated by a fire on the Cutter's Goose after Corky passes out while working on it.

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-05-06 | Here's a nearly hour-long excerpt of NFL Monday Night Football from within its heyday on the ABC Network, here aired over WXYZ Channel 7 in Detroit, MI. While Don Meredith was not part of the announcing team at this juncture (he was pursuing an acting career at the time), Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford were joined here by Alex Karras in the booth (in-between the end of his playing career and the start-up of the sitcom Webster).

The game highlighted this evening is the matchup between the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys at the Pontiac Silverdome.

This film stars Dennis Weaver (McCloud!) and Kurt Russell (just before "Escape from New York") in a tale of a drifter who takes a job offer from a wheat harvester contemplating suicide over his cancer and financial issues but ends up becoming a father figure to the young man. NBC Network - The Master - The Good, the Bad, and the Priceless (Complete Broadcast, 3/23/1984) 📺

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-04-29 | Here's the complete broadcast (except for part of the last break that got snipped) of a first-run episode from a short-lived series called The Master, "The Good, the Bad, and the Priceless" (S01E08), as broadcast over WMAQ Channel 5.

This program - inspired by a host of movies including "Revenge of the Ninja" - starred Lee Van Cleef (the "King of Spaghetti Westerns") as John Peter McAllister, an aging American ninja master in search of his daughter, Timothy Van Patten as his apprentice Max Keller, and Tara Buckman as Cat Sinclair. (Though Sho Kosugi, who played Okasa, was a regular, he was only shown here in the opening titles.) In this installment (whose title was a play on "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" [1968] in which Mr. Van Cleef had co-starred), John, Max and Cat go to New York to find the former's daughter, only to come across an imposter (a pre-Northern Exposure Janine Turner). Also featuring (in alphabetical order) Colby Chester, Oliver Clark, Johnny Seven, and special guest star George Maharis (formerly of Route 66).

NBC Network - Today - The Simple Solution to Rubiks Cube (Excerpt, 6/30/1981) ▦

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-04-26 | Here's an excerpt from the Today show on the NBC Network as aired over WMAQ Channel 5. Here, co-host Tom Brokaw is interviewing James G. Nourse, research associate at Stanford University's Chemistry Department and author of "The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube" - and Jane Pauley is seen very briefly, along for the ride.

In this segment, we learn that its invention was originally designed to teach 3-dimensional objects and their meaning to architectural students, that there are 43 quintillion moves (!), that the mass possibilities are why it is so difficult, how it's similar to what Mr. Nourse deals with in his regular job, what color he starts with to get the colors back to where they should be, that there's nothing random about it, the possibility of sore wrists and "Rubik thumbs," and how having a mathematical mind helps when playing it (but is not absolutely required); and as he explains all this the camera shows him actually working to get it all back (which he manages to do about 60% of the way into this clip)

ABC News Special Report - Sadat & Begin - WHBQ Channel 13 (11/20/1977)

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-04-24 | Here's an ABC News Special Report, with (most of) Barbara Walters' interview with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on the eve of Sadat's visit to Jerusalem, aired over WHBQ Channel 13 in Memphis, TN (then an ABC affiliate and owned by RKO General). Looks like the station wanted to finish the movie and run some promos, because they join the network feed late; about the first minute of the special report was missing. The opening (not seen here) and closing remarks were by her then co-anchor on the ABC Evening News, Harry Reasoner.

This flick starred Suzanne Pleshette and Gil Gerard (of Bob Newhart Show and Buck Rogers fame, respectively) in this tale of two people who participate in a game show where partners have to choose between love and money.

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-03-19 | Here's the complete broadcast of "Salvage" as presented on The ABC Sunday Night Movie over WXYZ Channel 7 in Detroit, MI. (this was the a repeat broadcast - the movie originally aired on Saturday, January 20th 1979)

This made-for-TV flick - which served as the pilot for the short-lived TV series Salvage 1 (which only aired for 16 episodes total) - starred Andy Griffith (in the long period of flop shows in-between his 1968 departure from The Andy Griffith Show and the start-up of Matlock in 1986) and Joel Higgins (years before Silver Spoons) as scrap and salvage entrepreneurs who build a makeshift rocket designed to salvage items abandoned in outer space, and in particular the moon - and meet resistance every step of the way from the government. Also starring Trish Stewart, co-starring J. Jay Saunders, Raleigh Bond and Jacqueline Scott, with guest stars Peter Brown, Lee De Broux and Richard Eastham, and special guest star Richard Jaeckel.

The host is Peter Nuno, his guests are Robert Rodriguez, union delegate of the Progressive Steel Workers Union and Wisconsin Steel Works, concerned housewife Helen Gutierrez, and Ignacio Sanchez, former employee of Wisconsin Steel Works, the topic is the March 1980 closure of the Wisconsin Steel Works plant in southeast Chicago where 3,400 workers lost their jobs and the effect that closure has had thus far on the community, and the program, except for the first opening voiceover at the beginning and the ending voiceover, is entirely in Spanish, as are the PSA's (but not the lower thirds).

WGN Channel 9 - Sea Hunt - Water Ski Show (Complete Broadcast, 7/26/1980) 📺 🤿

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-03-14 | Here's the complete broadcast of a repeat of an episode of the syndicated TV series, Sea Hunt, entitled "Water Ski Show" (S2E22 - original air date May 31st 1959), as aired over WGN Channel 9 via a somewhat worn 16mm print. I remember getting up really early in the morning with my dad to go fishing and seeing this on WGN.

Sadly, no mentions of "by this time my lungs were aching for air..." in this episode.

This early production effort of Ivan Tors (who would later produce the TV series Flipper), mounted by Ziv Television, starred (and made a star of) Lloyd Bridges as freelance scuba diver and former Navy frogman Mike Nelson (no, not the future host of Mystery Science Theater 3000!). This installment - about a champion water-skier who drowns during the finale of a water show - also featured Lisa Gaye, Robert Conrad (pre-Hawaiian Eye, Wild Wild West, Bye Bye Black Sheep / Black Sheep Squadron, etc.), William McGraw, Jack Wagner, William Boyett, and Courtney Brown (the last-named of whom had been Mr. Bridges' stunt double in the series' early going, before Bridges himself, by the show's end in 1961, did all but the most dangerous of the stunt work himself).

This made-for-TV movie, an early directorial effort from then-Happy Days star Ron Howard (and filmed entirely in Dallas, TX), starred Charles Martin Smith, Clint Howard (Ron's brother), Leslie King, Kevin Lee Miller, Manuel Padilla Jr., Dino Scofield and Mark Wheeler in a story of a group of high school friends forming a rock band.

NBC Sunday Night at the Movies - Special Bulletin (Complete Broadcast, 4/29/1984) 📺 ☢

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-03-10 | Here's the complete broadcast of a repeat of a made-for-TV movie, "Special Bulletin," that aired on NBC Sunday Night at the Movies over WMAQ Channel 5.

This "realistic depiction of fictional events," which stars Ed Flanders, Kathryn Walker, Roxanne Hart, Christopher Allport, David Clennon, David Rasche and Rosalind Cash, involves a terrorist attack on Charleston, SC, where a TV news team is taken hostage by terrorists who threaten to blow up an H-bomb off the coast of the state if the Navy refuses to disarm a key nuclear weapons facility in the area. (Because of the nature of this picture, bumpers were used at the start and end of each act.) This was one of the two TV-movies that aired in 1983 which dealt with the specter of nuclear destruction, the other being of course "The Day After."

NOTE: For extra verisimilitude, this broadcast features real tornado watch WMAQ-TV on-screen crawl messages during the movie beginning at two points - 1:18:46 and 1:32:55.

Bozo the Clown (Pilot, 1954)

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television (www.FuzzyMemories.TV) 2024-03-08 | Long before he became a TV personality in cities like Chicago and Boston, Bozo the Clown was a fixture on children's records. Here is where the seeds for his later TV fame got started - a filmed pilot for a potential Bozo the Clown TV series, back when he was owned by Capitol Records and before Larry Harmon got his hands on the clown - played here by Gil Lamb. The format is a little different too from what we all know and love.

Act I at the home of the Carlson family as Amy arrives in the living room for breakfast with her Bozo doll; Ramsey arrives with news that his prize hen is gone and blames Amy; in her room, Bozo comes to life and complains about her father pinching his arm; they then shrink to doll size, and venture out to ask a squirrel about Truesdale the dog's whereabouts and refers them to Oscar the Owl who's not so cooperative; Bozo's arrow leads them to Truesdale whom they ask about the hen

In the next act, Truesdale has been caught and sent to the pound; after making it to the animal shelter, Bozo paints himself invisible; while Amy deals with the dog catcher, one dog escapes and creates mayhem; after Truesdale escapes, he leads Bozo and Amy to where the hen is - in a henhouse, having had six chicks, much to Ramsey's relief (the hen has told Bozo and Amy that any time she lays an egg, he takes it away); the dog catcher arrives to recount his tale of dealing with the invisible Bozo, and this scene ends with her embracing her Bozo doll

For the finale, a sleeping Amy reminds Bozo that it's the end, and rearranges the blocks to spell it such, after which he too falls asleep
