Musical Analysis
"The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin is a prime example of ragtime music, characterized by its syncopated rhythms and distinctively catchy melody. The piece is structured in the classic ragtime form, consisting of multiple contrasting sections, often labeled A, B, C, D, and sometimes E, each typically 16 bars long.
The introduction, or A section, features a bright, bouncy melody that immediately captures the listener's attention. This section is notable for its use of syncopation, where the emphasis is placed on the off-beats, creating a lively and dynamic rhythm. The left hand provides a steady, march-like bass line with alternating bass notes and chords, grounding the syncopated melody in the right hand.
The B section offers a contrast to the A section, often with a smoother, more flowing melody and harmonic shifts that add depth to the piece. This section maintains the syncopated rhythm but introduces new thematic material, keeping the listener engaged.
The C and D sections continue to develop the musical ideas, each bringing its unique character and mood. The C section often serves as a trio, providing a contrasting middle section before returning to the A theme, while the D section may introduce more elaborate and virtuosic passages.
Overall, "The Entertainer" is a masterful example of Joplin's ability to blend catchy melodies with complex rhythmic patterns, making it a staple of the ragtime repertoire and a testament to his compositional prowess.

Musical Analysis
Handel’s Gavotte in C Major is a beautifully crafted example of Baroque dance music. Its clear binary form, elegant melody, functional harmony, and steady rhythm make it both a delightful piece to listen to and a valuable study in Baroque style. The use of terraced dynamics and ornamentation adds to its expressive quality, showcasing Handel’s mastery of the genre.
The piece opens with a clear, strong theme in C major. The melody moves predominantly in stepwise motion, creating a smooth and flowing line. The harmonic progression is straightforward, using primary chords (I, IV, V) to establish the key. The A section ends with a perfect cadence, clearly marking the end of the first part.
The B section presents a development of the motifs from the A section, going through a half cadence in the main tonality of C. The B section eventually returns to the tonic and concludes with a strong perfect cadence.
Handel's Gavotte in C Major is ideal for beginner pianists due to its simplicity and educational value. Its key of C major, clear binary form, and straightforward rhythms make it easy to read and play. The stepwise melody and homophonic texture are accessible for novices, helping them develop finger independence and coordination. The piece also offers opportunities to practice articulation and dynamics, enhancing musical expression. With its repetitive sections and manageable technical demands, the Gavotte provides a solid foundation for building essential piano skills and confidence.

Bach used harmonic modulation as a powerful tool to add variation, movement and color to his compositions.
In this video, we show the harmonic analysis of a chorale by J.S. Bach.
As you can see below the sheet music, Bach modulates several times during the short piece to neighbouring tonalities of C major.
The piece starts in the main tonality of C major. Then modulated to G major, the tonality of its dominant. After the repeat, it modulates to D minor, the parallel tonality of the neighbouring tonality F major. Then to A minor, the parallel tonality of C major, and at the end, it modulated back to the home tonality of C major.

A Neapolitan chord is a major triad built on the lowered second scale degree of the tonality. The Neapolitan chord is predominantly written in its first inversion forming the Neapolitan Sixth chord.
The origins of the Neapolitan chord is not clear, although it is thought that its popularity comes from the 17th and 18th century composers of the Neapolitan School.
In tonal harmony, the Neapolitan chord is often used as a pre-dominant chord preceding an authentic cadence. Due to its non-diatonic notes, the Neapolitan chord has a unique and distinct sound, giving it a powerful and dramatic effect.
In this example, the Neapolitan chord is shown as preparation to an authentic cadence in the tonality of C major:
bII: F - Ab - Db
V: G - B - D
I: C - E - G

A dominant seventh is a seventh chord built on the dominant, the fifth degree of the scale. The dominant seventh is formed of a root, a major third, a perfect fifth and a minor seventh.
In a V7 - I resolution, the seventh tends to resolve downwards by step to the third scale degree, the mediant. If this resolution is not possible, i.e. in a four-part harmony, the fifth of the tonic chord can be ommited. In this case, the tonic chord will be composed of the tonic and the mediant.
In this example, a V7 - I resolution is shown in the tonality of C major.
Dominant seventh in C major: G - B - D - F

Major and minor keys which have the same key signature are called relative keys. Relative keys share the same notes but start from different tonics.
In tonal harmony, the minor relative of a major key can have an accidental on the fifth scale degree (dominant). In that case, the fifth note of the scale is raised by a semitone to form the leading tone. This accidental is not a part of the key signature.
In this example, two relative keys of C major and A minor are shown.
C major: C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C
A minor: A - B - C - D - E - F - G(#) - A

A leading tone is a tone which resolves to a semitone higher or lower. In the context of tonal harmony, the leading tone is the seventh scale degree of the major scale. In the harmonic minor scale, the leading tone is the raised seventh scale degree, a major seventh above the tonic.
The leading tone gives a sense of resolution. This tendency is particularly important in the construction of cadential progressions. In a cadence, the leading tone becomes an essential part of the dominant harmony.
In this example, the leading tone is shown in the tonalities of C major and C minor. In both cases, the leading tone is B natural, a major seventh above C.

This is Für Elise, but in A major. I have changed a lot of harmonies. I'd like to believe this would have been Für Elise, if Elise had said yes!

A minor scale is a diatonic scale characterized by its first, third and fifth scale degrees forming a minor triad. The remaining tones, however, differ depending on the type of the minor scale. Compared to the major key, a piece in a minor key usually gives the sense of sadness or nostalgia.
There are three types of minor scales. Writing them in ascending order, these scales are formed of the following succession of whole steps and half steps. When used in descending, the natural minor scale is usually the preferred type of minor scale.
Natural Minor: W - H - W - W - H - W - W
In C minor: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C
Harmonic Minor: W - H - W - W - H - 3H - H
In C minor: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, B, C
Melodic Minor: W - H - W - W - W - W - H
In C minor: C, D, Eb, F, G, A, B, C
In this example you can hear the three types in the key of C minor.

The first and the fifth degrees of the scale are called tonic and dominant. The tonic and the dominant chords are the triads built on their respective notes of the tonality. A dominant chord is a major triad, even in a minor scale, as the seventh degree of a minor tonality is usually raised by a half step.
The tonic and the dominant are both essential elements of a piece. The tonic gives a sense of stability, whereas the dominant leads to instability which needs to resolve to the tonic. The dominant chord can also appear as a seventh or ninth chord.
As the first degree of the scale, the tonic chord is symbolized by the Roman numeral "I" (in major) or "i" (in minor). The dominant chord is indicated by the Roman numeral "V".
In this example, we have the tonic and the dominant chords in the tonalities of C major and C minor,
C major:
Tonic (I): C-E-G
Dominant (V): G-B-D
C minor:
Tonic (I): C-Eb-G
Dominant (V): G-B-D
