This magnificent and rather expensive lighthouse, the most costly in the US, was born out of tragedy.
July 30, 1865 the steam side-wheeler ship Brother Jonathan struck these rocks after a course correction to fight against the aggressive seas and winds. Of the 244 passengers only 19 survived via lifeboat. This was the deadliest passenger shipwreck at the time.
Years prior in 1792 Captain George Vancouver spotted these deadly rocks and dubbed them The Dragon Rocks and named the nearest point of land Saint George Point with hopes that one day the dragon would be slain.
The maps weren't updated as these were rather different times and the crew of the Brother Jonathan had no knowledge of the dangers lurking just a few miles from shore.
After the wreck a great effort was put forth to secure funding for the lighthouse. A survey of the terrain occurred in 1892 and construction began in 1893. Much of the expense was related to the 1339 well shaped granite blocks from Mad River. After a turbulent and even deadly decade of building, on October 20, 1892 the lamp was illuminated.
The lighthouse remains today standing strong on North West Seal Rock and clearly has earned it's name as an incredibly amount of seals seek refuge and enjoy basking in the sun with only high breaking waves and birds to disturb their relaxation.

Raptor 8K VV, 8K S35, Komodo-X, and KomodoPhil Holland2023-06-20 | ** YouTube Encoding Note - The recompression via YouTube gobbles up tonal detail and creates blocky/lossy noise particularly in the LOG samples, which is the flickering and madness you are seeing. If you'd like to see cleaner stills of this, I have uploaded them here: phfx.com/stripbox.cgi?gallery=phfx/cinematography/2023_06_20_RED_DynamicRange
Took a moment to take a close look at all 2023 RED Digital Cinema Camera models: - RED V-RAPTOR 8K VV - 00:12 - RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 - 02:22 - RED KOMODO-X - 04:32 - RED KOMODO 6K S35 - 6:42
The main reasons for this test is to see how well each body can play with each other, but also to inspect the differences found when it comes to Total Captured Dynamic Range. Things I'm looking for specifically are Stop Allocation above and below 18% Gray, Understanding how much Latitude you have before Clipping, and inspecting what occurs when Crushing, as well as inspecting Image Texture across the ISO Range.
I usually like others to come to their own conclusions regarding my tests, but I took about two weeks with all cameras testing them in a variety of conditions and I have a few thoughts relevant to all of this I think are worth sharing for the curious.
There was a notable and visible improvement in Low Light and High ISO performance when looking at the Komodo-X compared to the original Komodo 6K S35. Both have similar Dynamic Range, but there is an improvement in Tone and Color Rendering near the Noise Floor as well as improved Texture. Komodo-X in general is very, very close to V-Raptor 8K S35, though the Raptor edges it out still. But this is rather phenomenal performance out of a Global Shutter and suitable for all production work in my mind, somewhat similarly impressive for the higher frame rate bodies as well. Raptor 8K S35 has an interesting calibration that sets it apart from the rest of these bodies, but that manifests essentially in 2/3rds of stop of gain to the signal in RED's internal calibration. V-Raptor 8K VV still is the top tier body in the lineup and that's more noticeable across other tests I've performed, but also can be seen here. Generally we're talking about 1 stop to 1.66 stops difference in practice across all cameras when measuring things extremely closely across the board. It is impressive what is held in the shadows on the most recent 3 bodies, which is very relevant when exposing under key or developing flatter/lower contrast looks as well as mastering for HDR.
Take note of image cleanliness here as there is no noise reduction. And remember you don't always need to shoot at ISO 800. That's essentially what I'm illustrating here. Understand your exposure techniques and the tools you have at hand within the camera. If you're looking for ultra clean imagery utilize lower ISO Ratings. If seeking a bit more Highlight Latitude and allocation of stops up there, higher ISO Ratings might be the way to go for you.RED Komodo-X Unboxing, Inspecting, and OverviewPhil Holland2023-05-17 | Come watch me remove a camera from a box and talk about it.Phil Holland Live StreamPhil Holland2023-05-16 | ...Autumn Eventide - Los Angeles - 8K AerialPhil Holland2022-12-05 | Before we make the turn from Autumn to Winter take a moment to enjoy the color of Fall.
Sunsets in Los Angeles are often beautiful, but the brief time after the sun has dipped below the horizon tends to vary wildly from lackluster to eerily beautiful. Occasionally you get special light at dusk that only lasts a brief few minutes that somehow seems to freeze time despite the remaining light fading quickly as the darkness of night encroaches. This was one such an evening that carries moments within moments.
Wishing you all well during the last month of 2022.

It's majestic stature inspires so many. As iconic as it is, there's always a surprise to be found at different times of the year and in different parts of the canyon. This particular take was filmed during the transition at the end of Winter as snow still sits above the canyon on flat land above, but within this particular slot canyon the geothermal heat from the Earth is slowly defrosting the vegetation with faint traces of ice melting away on the canyon walls as Winter's grasp loosens.

Stiltsville is a protected small collection of homes built above water on pilings. The origins of these structures have a historic past dating back to 1922 during the Prohibition Era with these small sea shacks sprouting up. The area gained some notoriety when Crawfish Eddie opened up a beer and bait shop in the 30's and was well known for chilau chowder. In the 40s and 50s it was a common social hub for politicians and other well to do folks to seek respite away from the city.
The area now lives within Biscayne National Park. At it's peak there were 27 structures within Stiltsville. Over the last century the structures have survived or fallen to harsh storms, strong winds, hurricanes, legal intervention, and even federal dangers. Currently only 6 houses remain standing after a fire destroyed the LeShaw home in 2021. They are maintained by the few caretakers who tend to their needs via the established Siltsville Trust formed in 2003 with hopes of preservation. No new homes are permitted to be constructed here, but repairs and additions are frequently needed. Once these remaining structures are gone, they will be lost to time. It was an honor to document them briefly.
On a personal note, interviewing Gail was a joy. There's actually a great deal more footage of sitting down with his family and even an ocean research center. Gail is an architect who's been working on and adding to the Baldwin house over the years. Hearing his story about what it's taken to upkeep this house as well as what he finds magical about staying out there I found incredibly touching. In the case of what's shown, I was able to experience a lot of that charm in the journey of discovery and learning about Stiltsville that he described. It is truly beautiful out there.
In this short you'll see the Baldwin House, Jimmy Ellenburg House, Bay Chateau, Hicks House, LeShaw House, A-Frame House, and the Powerboat Club.

Brief Summary of Thoughts A great deal of new Super 35mm zoom lenses hit the market during the last year, I've been looking at and testing them all. Notable unique features the Fujinon MK-Rs have: Native Canon RF Mount (also available in E and MFT), Integrated Back Focus Adjustment, and a rather useful Macro Mode switch. The incredible thing about these is their extreme lightweight and compact design with each lens clocking in a bit over 2lbs. That makes them ideal for travel, doc, and run and gun shooting. 9 bladed iris provides a very pretty circular bokeh across the T-Stop range which creates a 18 point star pattern as you stop down. The other nice thing is the iris can fully stop down to black, which is rather uncommon with lenses in this price range. Lens flare is very wrangled in my opinion, subtle and pleasing in this case without going too over the top, no jarring color rendering to the flares. Coatings result in a very controlled contrast level even with encroaching flares, which doesn't wash out the frame, can be seen in the flashlight shots. Very impressed by their parfocal performance with zero focus breathing as you rack. I personally prefer lenses that have extremely minimal breathing. For follow focus operation I highly recommend using rod support to secure the lens during geared operation. This particular test I operated by hand to create a specific look and feel (subtle jitter and wobble), but I did test two follow focus units and it's a real good idea to lock things down. 82mm filter thread, 85mm OD for clamp on matte box. Zoom range covers all the bread and butter focal lengths for Super 35mm in two svelte lenses.

These are the earliest of days for 8K and this was as much a camera test as an actual shoot for me. However, this format size and resolution are two important things for me as we are getting into the VistaVision+ format size.
As for the concept, I wanted to put together something fairly unique for my first 8K shoot and have wanted to work with Bladesmith Tony Swatton for over 7 years as his swords have been on a few films I've worked on in the past. This video documents Tony over the course of several days as he forges and constructs a modern take on a Roman Gladius Sword that features damascus steel. It was a special few days shooting with Tony in his shop as he gears up to move into a new location after 25 years. I've always found damascus to be one the most beautiful ways to craft a blade. In this case there's a 93 layer damascus technique in the blade, twisted in the grip, and in detailed pieces throughout the guard and pommel nut. The finish of the blade maintains a darkness, yet still captures a shine from the light.

Then I'll go out into the real world and shoot in more practical conditions. I've been very happy with the Zeiss Otus 55mm and 85mm primes, especially on modern high resolution sensors. For the last few days I've been testing out the prototype Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4, which nicely fleshes out the focal lengths in the Otus family of lenses providing a wide, medium, telephoto option on FF35 sensors. I've lived in LA my whole life, but hadn't checked out the Walt Disney Music Hall until now. So I spent a couple hours there chasing light and compositions during the 2015 holiday season and shot the series in a progressive way, hence the video. Shots are between f/1.4-f/10, mostly in the f/2.8-f/5 range.

http://www.phfx.comEast Jesus 2012 - shot on the Red Scarlet X @ 4kPhil Holland2012-02-07 | I took a brief trip down to East Jesus with my Red Scarlet X to visit friends and to pay my respects to the late Charles Russell; a brilliant man and a friend to many.
East Jesus is an experimental, habitable art compound located in the famous Slab City of Niland, CA. It is a creation in progress originally built by Charles Russell and his friends. We feature a sculpture garden, art cars, Walter the 35 degree bus, as well as a selective residency program for artists and sustainability experts.
Charles passed away in 2011 and East Jesus is currently being maintained by his friends. To learn more about East Jesus check out:
There's much to see and do in East Jesus. It's a great place to get away from the city and sit around a nice campfire with some good folks. The Salton Sea is just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Worth the trip in you're in LA.
Charles is missed by many and it's somehow fitting to wrap these East Jesus visuals within the serene sounds of Nine Inch Nail's Ghosts 28 IV. Special angry thanks to the kids in the yellow SUV for following me and shooting spitballs at my Scarlet.
Be sure to select "Original" on the video resolution settings to watch at 4k. Web compression is hurting the details, but you can see the resolving power.
The music track is "Coital Conduit" off of my first album DIN from 2008. Which is currently free to download at http://www.phfx.com
