CR&R Garbage Trucks of Cherry Valley Trashman242 2024-04-20 | If CR&R was trying to keep its Cherry Valley location a secret, well, it was successful for the longest time. I still remember when enthusiasts first discovered the truck yard nestled in a residential neighborhood. A Formula 7000 on WX was one of the noteworthy trucks Mike found on Street View, being used as recently as 2008, and we've all seen the twin Peterbilt 310 rapid rails they used to have. This video shows some other trucks in and around Cherry Valley, including a WX rail-arm Octo ASL with Arizona plates. One of my favorite things is to hear how different each truck sounds, and we encounter something with a Volvo engine, a Cummins 8.3, and a Cummins L10 in this one short video. It was a fun experience seeing the older trucks that were hiding on the edge of town, hope you enjoy!

I used it that day to load and empty 20yd bins containing oilfield cuttings (wet dirt, basically).The build quality of the Freightliners couldn't compare to the rock solid Volvo. Smoother ride and a bit faster, yes, but that WG paired with the beastly Detroit never broke down and was a joy to drive.

Semi-Auto Trash Side Loader + Roto Carts Trashman242 2022-12-03 | One day back in 2014, all Rapid Rail and Bridgeport automated side loaders were being used and no spares were available, so the trash driver for my area brought a CWS manual side loader. Normally used for yard waste, trucks like this one had each been outfitted with a Bridgeport semi-auto arm and grippers. Even though that was done for yard waste carts that were being made available as an option, it helped make the MSLs more versatile in covering automated trash and recycling routes in circumstances like this. Join in for the only time I've seen a truck doing my old neighborhood's trash semi-automatically!
WhiteGMC with Cummins L10 Manual Side Load Garbage Truck + Volvo on Recycling Trashman242 2022-11-24 | Enjoy watching an early 1990s drop-frame WhiteGMC WXLL with a manual side load refuse compaction body mounted on it. Said body was manufactured by a California builder called CWS. This truck was seen doing a rural route outside of Escondido, CA collecting yard waste, which would have most likely been used as Alternate Daily Cover to layer over the trash at Sycamore Canyon Landfill in Lakeside. With sunlight year round, the San Diego region sees so much plant growth that green waste trimmings like these are almost too plentiful to be used as compost or mulch. Haulers get credit for recycling the material if it's used as Alternate Daily Cover, so the hauler in this area (EDCO Disposal) did just that.Another truck makes a quick appearance collecting household recyclables. It's a 2000-2001 Volvo Xpeditor fitted with an automated side-loading body called the Rapid Rail, which was made by Heil Environmental. Enjoy seeing these two trucks (and the third, if you have eagle eyes) navigating these wretched dirt roads just to keep up with our never-ending trash generation. Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Roaring and lid-flipping Volvo Heil STARRs Trashman242 2022-10-22 | A late afternoon visit to Rogue Disposal's operation in Medford, OR was a lot more fun than I remember. The Heil STARR (Semi Trailer Automated Rapid Rail) trucks they ran at the time made for a great show, so I decided to tidy up this video and share it today in honor of Rogue's recent sellout. I found it interesting how the first truck was operated like RAD's STARRs down in Arizona. Of course both companies are now owned by Waste Connections. Hope you enjoy!
MarBorg Industries in Santa Barbara Trashman242 2022-07-30 | This compilation has been in the works for a long, long time and I was only recently able to tie up some loose ends on it by getting manual side load and front load footage. MarBorg is one of the most classy trash hauling companies in California. Trucks are kept remarkably clean (see them in person, this video doesn't do any justice), employees are respectful, and service is always professional. They run their own MRF and rent portable toilets and even temporary fencing materials. It's a pleasure to show you just one angle of their collection side in this video today.

This must've been 2016, and a couple of the six or seven trucks WC had like this lived another couple years but are unfortunately no longer around today (this route is now covered by a Curotto Can on a front loader). It's interesting to think these weren't the last Heil 5000s that Waste Connections of the Mile High would own, either. Thanks for watching!

Demoing a Heil Odyssey Front Loader Trashman242 2021-11-28 | Pleasure yourself to a new video of my skinny ass running a front loader, this time a Heil Odyssey Half/Pack demo unit loaned to Waste Connections of Colorado. Denver has a unique mix of East coast 6-8yd stabs and California's 2-3yd wheeled containers in enclosures. With slightly more pullouts than other states, Colorado was a perfect place to test an Odyssey equipped with two outside control options. One set automatically runs the arms/forks at 1400 rpm with the touch and hold of a single button, the other option is a pair of levers with no throttle advance (at least on the demo unit). Inside the truck the electric joystick uses the same HALO system and can automatically empty cans with no driver thinking/input, but also allows manual control. I demonstrate both manual and HALO control multiple times throughout this little video.Overall I'm skeptical of the Odyssey - I don't see much justification for autonomous controls (if the guy can't operate it manually he shouldn't be behind the wheel) and I wasn't even impressed by the packer. You'll notice in a hopper shot I included that the truck was full and struggling to run a complete pack cycle, yet there was still unused space near the roof of the body. I think Heil tries to only use the first stage of the telescopic packer cylinders in pack cycles, but that shorter stroke combined with the shape of the packer blade results in poorer circulation of trash inside the body. In my experience with this and another newer Heil front loader, I've found they don't pack as much as a McNeilus and require more cycles to clear the hopper, especially of cardboard. I do like Heil's cushioned cylinders that slow the arms down at the top of their cycle to reduce wear and operate quieter, however they make it more difficult to slam tightly packed trash out of a container. Heil lets the driver override that and "violently" tilt the forks up and down but this does no good. The override should allow the driver to slam the arms when necessary.

You'd never know it, but this is actually a Waste Connections company. While WCI might have a plethora of operations in Washington State, their hauling site in Coos Bay is a tiny island in Republic Services' blue ocean of Oregon State dominance.A group of us drove up to Oregon in January 2016 to catch the last of some old trucks still running at that time, and I'm pleased to continue sharing the footage I got that week. Most Waste Connections resi guys around Denver leave the lids open on our routes, it just depends on the driver & helper. I liked getting the tipper to shut the lids for me, and my time at GSI got me in the habit of leaving things as tidy as possible.Shoutout to veteran trashman Eric Sr. who was driving while I was on the back, I thought we made a great team and this video doesn't do justice to how hard he works. At stops with a lot of personal cans (old style manual bins), he would stand at the curb tossing me one can at a time, and I stayed at the hopper emptying them and tossing them back in sync.Enjoy!
Three Lodal Garbage Trucks in Portland Trashman242 2021-08-08 | Even if it's the newest one, the first truck on trash was my favorite to watch. The covered hopper was unique for me and a constant flow of material into the hopper put it to the test, not to mention a two-man crew is unusual for Portland Lodals. This area of town, at the time still a Cloudburst route, had a lot of walk-up service. So one guy would wheel a cart up driveways and steps to people's properties and load their trash into that, bring it to the next property, and soon enough meet the truck down at the street while the other guy continued doing curbside stops.The rest features Gary doing recycling, and some Christmas tree and organics collection with a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed George.Hope you enjoy some Portland throwbacks!

Vintage Clips of Escondido Disposal, Inc. Trashman242 2021-03-06 | We've certainly come a long way in the last decade or so, but I'm grateful that I recorded any video at all of the trucks I watched around 2005 instead of taking only pictures. The video quality will be as much a trip down memory lane as I believe the content will. If nothing else, this is part of my own effort to preserve the trucks I remember watching in my youth, but I hope you also enjoy seeing some stuff I haven't yet uploaded anywhere. Revving Wittke Hopper + Curbside Footage Trashman242 2020-12-03 | In light of the 2021 GSI sellout to Republic, I think right now is high time for some old footage showcasing several of the Wittke Starlights in their fleet. Gallegos acquired each of the 5+ Wittke/Curottos from the City of Loveland's operations before they switched to automated side loaders, and these trucks helped GSI first automate recycling routes. They continued in that capacity when I worked at GSI, however it was fun to take one on trash as they could pack impressive loads.Enjoy seeing several GoPro angles as the 3/4 height packer munches away (inside truck 534), along with some overhead footage of the actual Curotto on that truck and curb shots of another (truck 521) with two very different Curottos. Western modified these carts in-house to be compatible with automated collection. With a minor addition to belt grippers on certain Bridgeport Drop-Frame Rangers (formerly "Trinities") used in the area, the whole system seems to work quite well. Ram Waste CollecStar 8000 ASL Trashman242 2020-07-23 | Ram Waste Systems is a competitor in Fort Collins, CO to Gallegos Sanitation (where several of us youtubers actually worked). Named after my alma mater, the Colorado State University Rams, the company holds its own in Northern Colorado and does particularly well in the suburban community of Windsor. They have run Heil rear loaders on Internationals for many years, and still do, but recently started buying a couple versions of automated side loaders from GS Products mounted on Freightliner M2 chassis. These ASLs work sort of well for them, but almost everybody in Colorado is accustomed to setting out additional trash next to their carts. This doesn’t make it the most ideal place for fully automated collection. Not to mention - people in Colorado really don’t know how to properly set out their carts to expedite automation.Nonetheless, Justin here (who grew up in Orange County and is keenly aware how California does residential trash the ‘right’ way) endured working with Ram Waste, and was actually one of the first to be assigned an ASL at the company. I’ve been needing to post this for ages, and he’s since moved on to bigger and better things, but a shoutout goes to Justin. Thanks everyone else for watching how one small Colorado company does things.
Ford L8000 - Loadmaster LM125 Garbage Truck Trashman242 2020-06-26 | For years, this small town in the Eastern Plains of Colorado has been serviced by a Leach Sanicruiser for residential work and this Loadmaster LM125 for the dumpsters. We all enjoyed Alex's video of the residential truck and this same driver, which can be seen here: youtube.com/watch?v=IWRqOgNAy5sBut now it's time we see Ol' Red (maybe from RDK?) tackle commercial trash. I was excited by the chance to witness a Loadmaster for the first time since seeing the LM400s in New York. As expected, Loadmaster's nearly unchanged design is still earning its keep. Being a 1995, this would be one of the last LM100s made before that model was discontinued, replaced by the smooth-shell Legacy and Excel models. Along with their rear loaders and a kick-ass automated side loader, the familiar "400" is still made: loadmaster.org/400-2The classic whine of the pump, speed of the packer, and massive overall size of the truck made this morning a blast. CCC/Maxon Front Loader - Green Waste Trashman242 2020-04-24 | An extended revisit of the time I found Escondido Disposal's old #21 doing unincorporated routes in the outskirts of my hometown. Normally the route was done by one driver in a side loading truck, but that must have broken down. I'm still impressed at how adept at working a FL this driver was, considering commercial tends to be a separate line of work from residential routes. I only ever saw him rolling in an MSL. Now of course this yard waste route is all automated, and the featured early 1990s Crane Carrier was sent to the scrapyard long ago.

M347 Maxon MSL with auto arm Trashman242 2019-12-15 | This is a compilation of several drivers taking EDCO's long-gone M347 through my old neighborhood in Escondido. This Maxon Legal-One was one of the first trucks to be converted to semi-auto capability with the Bridgeport arm and widened hopper around 2010. EDCO ultimately did this to all the regular Escondido Disposal manual side loaders when they started making yard waste carts available for rent. It would only be a few years later, however, when all of yard waste in Escondido became automated with new, fully-automated CNG trucks to service that waste stream.
Western Disposal Spring Cleanup in Broomfield Trashman242 2019-10-26 | The city of Broomfield's residential trash is currently open market with Waste Management, Western Disposal, Republic Services, and Waste Connections the current competitors. However, each Spring, Broomfield has Western Disposal collect bulk items curbside from any and all residents regardless of their chosen trash hauler. Desmond and I found the bulk item trucks on a Saturday a couple years ago already, and we were pleased to see older McNeilus and much newer Bridgeport rear loaders crushing the trash that people were ready to part with. Georges FF Gomez front loader Trashman242 2019-09-20 | It's enough of a privilege to still see the iconic "Legal One" front load body design on our streets. And a lot of us next-generation garbologists have concluded that the Mack MRU is the best modern chassis for commercial front load work. Pair the MRU with the Legal One, which isn't often done, and you have the truck George likes to call "Maxine." She's quick, loud, packs a hell of a load, and maneuverable despite her monstrous size. George is not fortunate enough to have his baby anymore, but I hope you enjoy seeing him take Maxine through the streets of Chinatown in this video.
WM Heil PODs of Oceanside Trashman242 2019-04-12 | Something made me think it was high time to revisit Waste Management in Oceanside where a fleet of FWD trucks and Heil POD interchangeable bodies once collected the city's trash. This was filmed shortly after WM's 2010 contract renewal, but still before they automated everything. Not sure how many of these drivers are still with WM, I'm told one of them actually works at a taco shop now lol enjoy~

E-Z Pack Hercules Front Loaders Trashman242 2018-12-07 | On separate occasions, I managed to find Waste Management running two rare, classic E-Z Pack front loaders on opposite ends of Colorado! The commercial truck was at the bottom of Denver and the WXLL was seen clear up in Fort Collins. I'm not sure if you'd be able to find the Volvo WX-Hercules FL out of Englewood anymore, which is a shame because I wish I hadn't lost him after that stop. You would certainly have a difficult time digging up the Volvo WXLL-Hercules Residential FL from WM's Ault yard, however, as that location in the past year has updated much of its fleet to diesel 520 and LR front loaders. I really wanted to see one of these with a Curotto once more, but the only time I was that lucky was four years ago.
Leach 2RII Rear Loaders (Commercial) Trashman242 2018-09-21 | Featured are some of the Leach commercial rear-loading trucks in the fleet of Gallegos Sanitation. Routes there start at 3:30 in the morning, which is a more common start time for commercial than I used to think. Accordingly, some clips were filmed in the dark to show that part of the day.I had a very good experience using Leach bodies on commercial routes. The hopper shape and size was already conducive to making trash disappear quickly, so add the hopper extension inherent in a squeeze-type rear loader design and that advantage is further improved. Unfortunately most haulers seem to be moving in the direction of McNeilus for rear loaders, and now at GSI only one or two Leaches are used for commercial as spares, despite the fact that 8-10 years ago the fleet was predominantly 2RII.If McNeilus is the drop frame side loader of the rear loader world (quick packing, but shallow hopper), Leach is the Lodal EVO (each function more effective, albeit slower). The only major downside to the slow packer in some older Leaches was having to hold a lever and force the packer to complete a cycle as the truck became full. These were the only times their slow speed became an actual nuisance, but holding that lever becomes necessary much earlier in your load than on a McNeilus, from my experience. Timing the start of your pack cycle at just the right moment is an integral part of making do with that slow speed, and I tried to show that in this video. Shoutout to Desmond for filming almost all of it, and please leave your feedback on how you think this turned out.
CR&R in Dana Point + SJC Trashman242 2018-07-20 | What we're seeing is really the old SOLAG service area, if anyone remembers this coastal predecessor to CR&R. I'm rather pleased with the outcome of this compilation, hopefully it entertains the other Automated enthusiasts. Though everything you'll see was filmed 5 years ago, many of these trucks can still be found in and around San Juan Capistrano today, while others were surprising finds back in 2013. South Tahoe Refuse (Residential) Trashman242 2018-06-30 | On the North side of Lake Tahoe, the family-owned Tahoe Truckee Disposal Service collects California customers. On the Nevada side, in Incline Village, Waste Management has a small operation. But around the South end of the lake is another privately-owned sanitation company, called South Tahoe Refuse. STR is known for having a couple of STS front loaders (if you're not sick of all the acronyms by now), along with some Heils but my luck would be seeing the McNeilus Pacific Series that I didn't even know was in their fleet.The company with the orange trucks really puts on a great show. My parents relocated to this part of California, making STR their new trash company and allowing me plenty of opportunity to see more of this. From direct observation and what my dad tells me, I can comfortably say that STR provides some of the highest quality service I have ever known. They make full use of having three-man crews on residential front loaders and return containers to the top of everybody's driveway with lid replaced and any litter cleaned up. I'm told that animals interested in garbage + vacation renters don't mix very well, yet these diligent workers readily gather ignorant people's trash that gets spread all around by local wildlife. This hauler encourages residents to set garbage out the morning of collection for that very reason, but some people don't get it.Anyways, it's refreshing to see a company that's contracted to haul trash from an entire city still take pride in the smallest parts of the job. Enjoy seeing these guys and their tricks of the trash ;) To me, this video is all about the South Tahoe Refuse employees, because seeing the show they performed made up for an 'everyday' front loader.
Metro Disposal in New Orleans Trashman242 2018-05-18 | With collection services provided twice a week to every home Monday-Saturday, many employees on salary/day-rate, and a half-baked recycling program, I think the waste industry in New Orleans is an anomaly. Excepting current contracts and the use of wheeled carts at every household, it's like nothing has changed since the '60s. Not a bad thing, as that jibes with the Big Easy's greatest appeals in its old-fashioned aura and Creole architecture.Haulers are contracted to collect residential waste from four districts in city limits, with the greater two franchise areas going to Richards Disposal and Metro Disposal. When I was in town last year for Waste Expo, I stayed with fellow youtuber George at an Airbnb, and we found time to check out the collection scene on one of our two trash days that week. I'll let the video of these guys at Metro speak for itself, but feel confident it will satisfy and impress. As an aside, this video is meant for nothing more than that--entertainment of those interested in the industry.

DKB Disposal Trashman242 2017-11-24 | DKB was a short-lived (2012-2016) waste collection company in the Denver Metro area. It grew quickly, winning large neighborhood service contracts left and right, along with plenty of individual "scatter" customers. Given my interest in all trucks and the intricacies of this industry, DKB caught my eye and I was fortunate to have filmed some of the fleet before the company was abruptly sold. It became part of Mountain Waste in August 2016 during a historic swath of merges and buyouts by both Mountain Waste and American Disposal (of Virginia).Mostly secondhand purchases from that nebulous Sacramento municipal equipment trader, DKB's trucks had varying bodies and chassis and each seemed uniquely satisfying. I only wish I could have seen and filmed more of them, but the expansion of their fleet is chronicled through some quality pictures on DKB's facebook page: facebook.com/DKBDisposal Some of these actually are still on the streets, slaving away for other haulers in the region. The Volvo WX-Heil Formula 5000 at the beginning as well as the Peterbilt in this video were acquired by an unrelated company called Best Cleaner Disposal, which remains independent but has experienced its own notable growth in recent years.
1995 Ford L8000 Garbage Truck Trashman242 2017-10-26 | Watch as Aaron takes down a trash route a little after Halloween using a more classic truck from The Garbage Man fleet. Despite the malfunction going on with the throttle advance, two of us working together on it during the busiest season of the year wasn't all that bad--proper teamwork and being smart about when to run the slow packer made it more enjoyable than you might think. It's too bad I for some reason didn't show the inside of the cab, for it had its own sights and sounds that were a far cry from the cheap feel of the hauler's Freightliner and International cab interiors. This is the only time I ever worked with or even got to see this machine on route..I sure would have liked to experience more of it, especially once the second (useless) tipper was removed and the speed-up was put back in working order.
Feeding A Hungry Garbage Truck Trashman242 2017-09-22 | Wednesday's trailer park route is nothing but 95 gallon trash carts, all day long. In this selection you get to see how a Mcneilus Manual/Automated side loader likes that challenge. With the 6" tall curbside 'half' door actually propped open, it still did very well. That day I accidentally broke the latch for said door and couldn't shut it (I think something like a solid tree branch was trying to be packed and it burst the door right open in the process).I started helping on this trailer parks route immediately after finishing my own, so there are 500 stops already in the truck at the start of the video. Once I got to the landfill, with the truck's 31yd body stuffed tight, the whole load ended up being 13.99 tons.Hope you enjoy this footage! Mcneilus actually did alright with the MSL packer and hopper, it's the automated arm and some other things on the M/A that I have gripes about.
Western Disposal Residential Trucks Trashman242 2017-07-02 | A couple automated side loaders from Western in Boulder, CO doing their thing. Recycling and compostables alternate each week, and carts are labeled only with a color-coded sticker on top designating which waste type belongs where. Not something I'd enjoy as a driver (especially after a snowstorm), but I suppose it makes things more uniform. Enjoy seeing the flawless Bridgeport Drop Frame Ranger, a cursed M/A, and a pretty dope commercial Mcneilus RL at the end.
Side Loader Hopper Video (Mcneilus M/A) Trashman242 2017-04-13 | Here are a couple of my old automated routes, each time with the truck getting relatively full. In almost every neighborhood, GSI requires its drivers to place empty carts on the corner of the driveway or on the grass behind the sidewalk to keep bike paths/sidewalks clear and allow more street parking. It's not uncommon for trash companies in open market settings to try and find ways to go farther in satisfying their customers. Many haulers in Colorado will actually return empty containers to the top of every driveway in order to stand out to their customers. You'll see me skipping certain containers: blue lidded carts are for recycling and the rest (including some manual bins) are for subscription-based yard waste service.Special thanks to Jaccob (RefuseArizona) for loaning me his GoPro-type camcorder.
