A Staffordshire Sojourn - More midland memories. Jayne Anne Strutt 2023-08-06 | The original county of Staffordshire covered much of what is now the huge West Midlands Conurbation shaped during the 1970's. Wolverhampton was one of those towns swallowed up by the West Midland's authority. The remnants of Staffordshire still cover a vast area but the county has lost so much of its character, once embracing so many smaller unique villages and communities located within their rural surroundings. This video depicts a sojourn belonging to history, and Staffordshire has indeed a rich history. From the Staffordshire Moorlands in the north, through the Potteries, world famous for the historic ceramics industry. Following old meandering byways and waterways through time travelling southwards with nostalgic insights in to local culture and history, from King Charles 11. who in the sixteen hundreds famously hid from the Roundhead Army following the battle at Worcester within the boughs of an old oak tree on the Buscobell House estate. At 'Mosely Old Hall' nearer Wolverhampton the same king was given sanctuary by hiding in a priest hole. But well before that, this was near the site of an ancient battle between the the Saxons and Danes in the location known as Wednesfield, (Woden's Field), still regarded as a village by local people. Further south Holbeche House at Kingswinford was the site of a bloody rounding-up of the Gunpowder Plotters. The canal is like a ribbon extending towards the River Severn passing by the beautiful wooded Kinver Edge escarpment complete with latter-day troglodytes. In fact from the River Trent in the far north, following the route of Trent and Mersey canal and subsequently the Staffs and Worcester canal the whole length of the county is covered. Some of the towns shown like Dudley, border the very edge of Staffordshire, but remain intrinsically industrial Staffordshire - Black-Country in character. Loaded with lovely old pubs on this route through history including the world's wonkiest known as the 'Crooked House' at Himley, which has so sadly just (August 2023) been destroyed by fire! During a sixty-year career, he wrote music in several classical genres and styles, from film scores to opera. His best-known works include Façade, the cantata Belshazzar's Feast, the Viola Concerto, the First Symphony, and the British coronation anthems Crown Imperial and Orb and Sceptre.Born in Oldham, Lancashire, the son of a musician, Walton was a chorister and then an undergraduate at Christ Church, Oxford. On leaving the university, he was taken up by the literary Sitwell siblings, who provided him with a home and a cultural education. His earliest work of note was a collaboration with Edith Sitwell, Façade, which at first brought him notoriety as a modernist, but later became a popular ballet score.In middle age, Walton left Britain and set up home with his young wife Susana on the Italian island of Ischia. By this time, he had ceased to be regarded as a modernist, and some of his compositions of the 1950s were criticised as old-fashioned. His only full-length opera, Troilus and Cressida, was among the works to be so labelled and has made little impact in opera houses. With her dramatic style and exotic costumes, she was sometimes labelled a poseur, but her work was praised for its solid technique and painstaking craftsmanship. Percy Grainger: Lincolnshire Posy. Jayne Anne Strutt 2023-07-15 | Percy Grainger 1882-1961. Australian born composer and pianist who became an American citizen. He was greatly admired by Grieg and Delius.and noted for collecting and arranging English folk songs. Most well known of these his arrangement of 'Brigg Fair' from North Lincolnshire and recorded by Grainger on an Edison Phonograph during 1905. Years later Delius composed his famous orchestral rhapsody based Percy's arrangement 'Brigg Fair'. Delius and Grainger were to become lifelong friends.Lincolnshire Posy is a musical composition by Percy Grainger for concert band commissioned in 1937 by the American Bandmasters Association. Considered by John Bird, the author of Grainger's biography, to be his masterpiece, the 16-minute-long work has six movements, each adapted from folk songs that Grainger had collected on a 1905–1906 trip to Lincolnshire, England. In a similar fashion to these folk songs, many of the movements are in strophic form. The work debuted with three movements on March 7, 1937 performed by the Milwaukee Symphonic Band, a group composed of members from bands including the Blatz Brewery and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer factory worker bands in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Unlike other composers who attempted to alter and modernize folk music, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Grainger wished to maintain the exact stylizing that he experienced from the originals. A city of great charm and culture with a fine medieval Cathedral housing a beautiful Father Willis pipe organ. The city is built on a hillside overlooked by its famous cathedral and Norman castle. Down by the the river and canal old re-developed warehouses form part of a trendy new look. Many Tudor style buildings gathered together on the route down through the town completes a sense of history that still pervades the scene in this increasingly modern looking city. The black statue with his dog, situated behind the cathedral is of the Victorian poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. The other regal looking character is no less than George 111. An English composer of light music and, early in his career, a leading violist.He was born into a musical family, but, despite his wishes and obvious talent, his parents only reluctantly allowed him to pursue a musical career. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Frederick Corder (composition) and Lionel Tertis (viola), and played in string quartets and theatre pit bands, before joining symphony orchestras conducted by Thomas Beecham and Henry Wood. Coates's experience as a player added to the rigorous training he had received at the academy and contributed to his skill as a composer.While still working as a violist, Coates composed songs and other light musical works. In 1919 he gave up the viola permanently and from then until his death he made his living as a composer and occasional conductor. His prolific output includes the London Suite (1932), of which the well-known "Knightsbridge March" is the concluding section; the waltz "By the Sleepy Lagoon" (1930); and "The Dam Busters March" (1954). His early compositions were influenced by the music of Arthur Sullivan and Edward German, but Coates's style evolved in step with changes in musical taste, and his later works incorporate elements derived from jazz and dance-band music. The video features a test pattern used on the IBA Lichfield transmitter based at Hints beside the the busy A.5 or Watling Street in the county of Staffordshire. Brings back memories of famous personalities from the past broadcast from the Aston Studios in Birmingham. Most memorable being, Patricia Cox who used to read the news and present programs, and the one and only Jean Morton a continuity announcer who also introduced of the famous Tingha and Tucker bears, and then Pinky and Perky piggies of glove-puppet fame. Only a few memories represented here, but I'm sure this will mean much more to others who used to switch over to 'Channel 8', which was the place on the Midlands clink-clunk dial for associated television's entertainment.The central region covered a vast distance from North of Derby to Stratford in the south, and from Wellington in the west to the outskirts of Leicester in the east. The primary Midland television signals are now all transmitted from nearby Sutton Coldfield, also feeding a few relay stations in fringe areas of poor reception. A Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and singer. Considered one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Jobim internationalized bossa nova and, with the help of important American artists, merged it with jazz in the 1960s to create a new sound, with popular success. As a result, he is sometimes known as the "father of bossa nova".He was a primary force behind the creation of the bossa nova style, and his songs have been performed by many singers and instrumentalists internationally since the early 1960s.In 1965, the album Getz/Gilberto was the first jazz record to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It also won Best Jazz Instrumental Album – Individual or Group and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The album's single '"Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema)'", composed by Jobim, has become one of the most recorded songs of all time, and the album won the Record of the Year. Jobim composed many songs that are now included in jazz and pop standard repertoires. "Garota de Ipanema" has been recorded over 240 times by other artists. It is a world-famous bossa nova and jazz standard song. Jobim wrote this piece especially for the Brazilian singer Sylvia Telles. "Dindi" is a reference to a farm named "Dirindi", in Brazil, a place that Jobim and his friend/collaborator Vinicius de Moraes used to visit (according to Helena Jobim, his sister, in her book "Antonio Carlos Jobim - Um Homem Iluminado"). In December 1966, Telles recorded this piece with the guitarist Rosinha de Valença. Sylvia Telles, A sad ending - She had had just recorded her second tribute to Jobim, 1966's The Music of Mr. Jobim (or Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim), and was travelling to a rustic weekend getaway with her boyfriend Horacinho de Carvalho before she was to fly to New York to work on an LP for Kapp Records. But on the way to the farm, Horacinho she fell asleep at the wheel. It was the second time she had been in an asleep-at-the-wheel accident, surviving a minor one in 1964, but this time the car flipped several times, killing both of them.On this video, another beautiful arrangement of this Latin jazz standard by Paul Sawtell, also brilliantly playing both vibraphone and piano. Duncan Lamont: Summer Sambas prt 2. Jayne Anne Strutt 2023-05-08 | Duncan Lamont 1931 - 2019. British saxophonist, composer, arranger and bandleader active for many years in London's Soho jazz scene. His soundtracks include the music to the 1970s children's television animation series Mr Benn.Lamont was born in Greenock, the son of a shipyard worker. He began learning the trumpet at the age of seven because “it was the cheapest instrument I could get – it cost 30 shillings”. He started playing with local dance bands while still at school. After a time working in the shipyards, Lamont moved to London to play with Kenny Graham's Afro Cubists and (switching to tenor saxophone) with the Johnny Keating band in 1957. In 1958 he toured the US with Vic Lewis. During the 1960s he became a member of the Johnny Scott Quintet.On this video a fantastic line-up of musicians perform on this budget 'MFP' (Music for Pleasure) album. It is in the Pomp and Circumstance tradition, with a brisk opening contrasting with a broad middle section, leading to a resounding conclusion. The work has been heard at subsequent state occasions in the Abbey: the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and the wedding of Prince William in 2011. Duncan Lamont: Summer Sambas prt. 1 Jayne Anne Strutt 2023-05-05 | Duncan Lamont 1931 - 2019. British saxophonist, composer, arranger and bandleader active for many years in London's Soho jazz scene. His soundtracks include the music to the 1970s children's television animation series Mr Benn.Lamont was born in Greenock, the son of a shipyard worker. He began learning the trumpet at the age of seven because “it was the cheapest instrument I could get – it cost 30 shillings”. He started playing with local dance bands while still at school. After a time working in the shipyards, Lamont moved to London to play with Kenny Graham's Afro Cubists and (switching to tenor saxophone) with the Johnny Keating band in 1957. In 1958 he toured the US with Vic Lewis. During the 1960s he became a member of the Johnny Scott Quintet.On this video a fantastic line-up of musicians perform on this budget 'MFP' (Music for Pleasure) album. Wolverhampton, around the edges - Midland Memories. Jayne Anne Strutt 2023-04-09 | The once great industrial midland town/now city, of Wolverhampton has its hidden charms. On this video its all about around its rural and suburban periphery and through the mists of time,. Years ago Wolverhampton was in the English county of Staffordshire, until it became part of the West Midlands conurbation in the 1970's. Up until fairly recently it still seemed that the surrounding area consisted mainly of diverse small village communities based on farming the land rather than the heavy engineering associated with the Black Country. Mining also had an impact on the landscape, after all this was close to the epicenter of the Industrial revolution! There's much history, tradition, local character and pleasant familiar rural scenes to explore by delving into the recent past through these images. Its not all that long ago really in the grand scale of things, just a short trip down Memory Lane and across the 'Seven Cornfields' from 'Penn Common'. Composed in 1959, and remembered by most for TV's Dr Finlay's Casebook fame, 'A Little Suite', was not necessarily inspired by Scotland, in fact it was more English in inspiration according to the composer.The piece was described by the composer as 'absolute music', and taking the three movements into account this is not far from the mark I'm sure. Jogtrot, name title given to the Little Suite's third movement, is a brilliant mix of the first and second movements. Listen out for melodies from the previous movements. 'Jogtrot', seems to describe something of the changing rhythm patterns played in the piece. This suggests the equestrian connection...Wonder if you can count the names of the numerous public houses encountered on the journey? On this video: - a 'trip down memory lane', with images of rural scenes from days gone by. Featuring the humble horse, that years ago people depended on so much in their daily lives. Tettenhall Through Time - Midland Memories. Once the scene of a historic battle, rural Tettenhall on the north west outskirts of Wolverhampton has now become absorbed into the huge West Midlands conurbation. For those who know this area clues to a more rural past are still in plain sight and memories from more recent years are still kept green, like the lovely picnics on the green and paddling in the shallow pool. An Italian composer and songwriter, best known for the music for the song "Fascination". He was born in Massa Carrara, Tuscany, Italy, and died in Paris, France.On this video "Fascination" instrumental, in the style of a Palm Court Orchestra. This was is a very popular waltz song with music composed in 1904 and lyrics (1905) by Maurice de Féraudy.It was first published in Hamburg (Anton J. Benjamin) and Paris (Édition F. D. Marchetti) in 1904 in a version for piano solo ('Valse Tzigane'). As a song with de Féraudy's words, it was first performed by the French music-hall singer Paulette Darty, in 1905, and published the same year.The video shows a selection of posters and postcards featuring the UK seaside town of 'Scarborough', on the North Yorkshire coast in its heyday. Trevor Duncan: An Idyll - St Boniface Down. Jayne Anne Strutt 2023-02-28 | Trevor Duncan -1924 –2005 was an English composer, particularly noted for his light music compositions. Born in London, and largely self-taught, he originally composed as a sideline while working for the BBC. In the UK, he is well known for pieces such as High Heels and the March from A Little Suite, all of which gained fame as television and radio themes. On this video:- A beautiful and haunting orchestral Idyll by Trevor Duncan composed in 1956. This piece was named after an area on the south coast of the Isle of White. According to the composer the work celebrates 'a quiet walk along a ridge'. So, with that in mind here's a walk in North Yorkshire seeing the seasons change from the last snow of Winter into Spring, across vale and moor. It's a truly lovely, magical, pastoral piece of music.Enjoy the ramble .... That is just what a modest young musician from Scarborough did.Here's the story behind the 'Unsung Hero of Music' from Scarborough. How through his early musical experiences as chorister and organist then listening to the orchestra at Scarborough Spa, he forged a career in music and was subsequently able to dedicate himself to Delius from 1928 onward for six years.It is hard to imagine where the music of Delius would be today without the timely intervention of this young Yorkshire man. Not only did he enable the fine 'Indian Summer' of the composer's life work to take place, but Fenby breathed life into a mix of previously discarded pieces of music and brought them to the fore by reshaping and presenting them in a different and more accessible way. Eric went on reshaping and presenting anew the essence of the genius that was Delius. He alone was uniquely and eminently well qualified to do so having formed such a close bond with the composer. Ironically being largely self taught from an early age, he came to assist Delius without any fixed preconceptions. Even after a what amounts to a lifetime of dedication to Delius, Eric continued to devote the rest of his existence; apart from his devoted family life, to reworking the music of Delius in the most delightful and beautiful way, by writing and recording descriptions for various recordings, giving talks travelling far and wide to do so, conducting orchestras, guiding young musicians into the special art of what is the musical essence of Delius' music, furthering lasting appreciation of this music by supporting various musical societies and associations at home and over the sea and by telling his story tirelessly to anyone who might care to listen.Here's hoping this video will in a small way help to continue his life's work for Delius, but with more of an insight into the life of this modest gentleman from Scarborough. I have included some memories of those who knew him personally, recently introduced to me. I have retraced his steps over and over again around this seaside town and along the cliffs where the spirits of both Frederick Delius and Eric Fenby float by to the sound of the 'husky voiced sea' and the calling of seagulls. There is yet much more not included in the video so as to limit the whole three parts to approx' one hour in total. I however don't think justice can be fully achieved to the total value of this man's kindness and devotion to Delius and to music in general. Never forgetting the great respect and humility he showed to all with whom he had any contact. NB. - Much could be learned by his example!!!So to Scarborough and back to the Spa were he first had the experience of an orchestra remembered now with a plaque in his honour, installed in the reception area of the building, on to 'Fenby Gardens' & 'Throxenby Hall' (not included in the video) were he spent time writing down his then very recent experiences under the comforting wing of his loyal friend Tom Laughton. Delius: Cynara Jayne Anne Strutt 2023-01-31 | Frederick Delius - 1862-1934 - An English composer. Born in the north of England to a prosperous mercantile family, he resisted attempts to recruit him to commerce. He was sent to Florida in the United States in 1884 to manage an orange plantation. There he soon neglected his managerial duties, and in 1886 returned to Europe. Having been influenced by African-American music during his short stay in Florida, he began composing. After a brief period of formal musical study in Germany beginning in 1886, he embarked on a full-time career as a composer in Paris and then in nearby Grez-sur-Loing, where he and his wife Jelka lived for the rest of their lives, except during the First World War. In his later years Delius became blind and severely disabled, unable to complete his life's work. In 1928 a music teacher and fellow Yorkshireman from Scarborough offered his services as an amanuensis to the blind and paralyzed composer. This was to allow a radiant Indian Summer in the final years at Grez.. Composing continued with the aid of Eric Fenby taking down the notes, offering his complete devotion to Delius. Fenby also enabled the completing, reshaping and promoting of so much of Delius' previous work. The story has been beautifully told in Ken Russell's iconic film 'A Song of Summer' taken from Fenby's book 'Delius as I knew Him'.Cynara is a setting by Frederick Delius of a poem by Ernest Dowson, for solo baritone voice and orchestra.Delius worked on the piece in 1907 as part of his score for Songs of Sunset, but abandoned this setting as he felt it did not fit with the other poems by Dowson. He left it incomplete. The sketches were rediscovered in 1929 by Delius's assistant, Eric Fenby. (the composer Philip Heseltine, otherwise Peter Warlock, also claimed credit for the discovery). Delius dictated to Fenby a setting of the final four lines, and the completed score was sent to Heseltine who was assisting Sir Thomas Beecham in the organisation of a Delius Festival to be held in London during October 1929.Cynara was premiered at the Queen's Hall on 18 October 1929; John Goss was the soloist, with the BBC Orchestra conducted by Beecham.On this video the subject of a heart's desire looms large, perhaps an imaginary character of extraordinary beauty and a perfect match can she exist or does she exist? She, however haunts the thoughts of someone with a roving eye. The background has to be Paris and our gentleman time traveler frequents the city from the late nineteenth century through the the Nazi 1940's occupation with glimpses of only yesterday.
