Digital FoundryWe've had an extended look at a preview build of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart on PS5 Pro and we're stacking it up against the standard PlayStation 5 in this video. This is an interesting one as image quality on the existing game isn't bad - so just how much of a difference does PSSR upscaling make? Note: this is a preview build and there may be changes in the final build. The preview build only had a Pro Performance RT mode, for example, and we'd hope to see Insomniac improve the fidelity modes too.

PS5/PC Tech ReviewDigital Foundry2024-10-17 | With the latest patch update 1.05 installed, we return to Until Dawn's PS5 remake - and check out PC for the first time - in a bid to establish what works and what doesn't. There is some improvement on the PS5 side with the uneven frame pacing of its 30fps cap now fixed - and likewise PC's ray tracing options now have an impact on settings in-game. However plenty of other issues persist with the new patch, and are even added in the same breath.

Silent Hill 2's remake for PC is great in many ways - particularly in how it provides meaningful visual upgrades over the PlayStation 5 version of the game. However, graphical issues are widespread and the stuttering in the game is remarkably poor - and not even frame-rate caps or other fixes can fix underlying, foundational problems.

October 11th 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the GeForce 256, the original Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). With cutting edge technologies like hardware-accelerated transformation and lighting (T&L), combined with what was - for the time - brutal performance, GeForce 256 was a game-changer.
In this DF Direct special hosted by Alex Battaglia, we bring together Nvidia staff to discuss why this product was so important. On the panel, we have:
John Montrym, Chief Architect John Spitzer, VP of Developer and Performance Technologies Nick Stam, Senior Director of Technical Marketing - and Technical Director of PC Mag in 1999. Jacob Freeman, GeForce Evangelist

Eagerly awaited by fans of Atlus' celebrated RPGs, Metaphor ReFantazio is built on the Persona engine with Persona mechanics, with a fantasy edge. In this extensive review, Oliver Mackenzie focuses on the PS5 code (the only review code offered, alas) but brings in comparisons from the PC and Xbox Series demos where appropriate. As expected, the game is terrific, but there are a number of technical problems and performance issues that demand attention.

But What About Performance?Digital Foundry2024-10-05 | Developer Bloober Team's remake of Silent Hill 2 is a surprise success in its telling of a Konami's original story, backed by an authentic visual recreation in Unreal Engine 5 - with Lumen reflections and GI. Comparisons to the PS2 original are fascinating to observe, where the studio has the bravery to deviate from the script where need be. There are rough points here too though, notably in performance - and sadly neither PS5's performance or quality modes always hold a stable line at their target 60 or 30fps.
Many thanks to Marc 'Try4ce' Duddleson for the pristine PS2 capture, taken using the RetroTink 4K.

Based on footage seen here, we're looking at a 60fps presentation that's a huge improvement over the standard PS5 *and* irons out its performance drops. PS5 and Series X offer two modes: the curiously labelled Speed mode (for 60FPS performance), and a 30FPS quality mode - of which the latter is the more stable choice. On PC there's a huge range of options, and the sky is the limit - though a powerful CPU is recommended in dealing with the game's high level of on-screen enemies. The ambitious DS2 Lighting Engine mod on PC adds a suite of upgrades including volumetric fog, world shadows, and high grade ambient occlusion - plus Nvidia DLAA and AMD FSR support. Better still, the Lighting Engine allows others in the modding scene to implement their own changes to the game - with impressive results that would fit our expectations of an official remaster. Tom goes in-depth on the upgrades compared to the original game.

But How Good Is It?Digital Foundry2024-08-06 | Microsoft's 'Windows on ARM' initiative isn't great for gaming right now - but its Auto SR technology is definitely intriguing. Using a hardware neural processing unit, Auto SR is a screen-space AI upscaler that takes game resolutions in the 700 to 900 line range and makes them look much more presentable on higher resolution displays - good for laptops for sure, but not that bad on a desktop either. It's not really comparable to DLSS etc, but it's certainly interesting and doesn't impact frame-rates - though it does add 12ms of input lag. Rich has the full low-down.
