Rebirth (Austin Wintory Contest Nov 2023) Mark Choi 2023-12-04 | This was a fun motif to play with! I didn't overthink it too much and went straight for the first idea that came into my head.Recorded myself "playing" (plucking) the piano and then had fun popping that up in different forms around the track. Baldurs Gate 3 - Piano Medley [Composed by Borislav Slavov, arranged by me] Mark Choi 2023-11-16 | OK so I've only made one arrangement/video so far this year - for good reason as I've been busy with composing work - but hopefully I've made the most of it...Here's my tribute to my friend Borislav Slavov's amazing Baldur's Gate 3 soundtrack. My original plan was to finish the game first before plotting out the overarching narrative; but honestly, after somehow miraculously finding 100 hours to play and STILL only barely scratching the surface at the start of Act 3, I thought I'd better just get on with it!!I went with a bombastic statement of the main theme to start, before a pensive modulation to Weeping Dawn (for which I reused the first half my arrangement from a couple of years ago, also on this channel). It seemed an appropriate lament for the state of affairs - illithid parasite in the head, impending doom, goblin threats, innocent refugees under threat. Down By The River then occupies the central part of the medley, just as the camp and personal relationships provide sanctuary for the party throughout their travails.But of course, nothing is plain sailing - and what comes next is a struggle between Raphael's hold over events and The Power you wield inside you. While I'm not quite at that point in the story yet, the hints are there that you could make several extremely varied decision when crunch time comes - a dilemma I'm looking forward to :) In any case, the mash-up worked nicely so I was happy with how that was represented!Finally, that conflict is resolved by your own resolve to Want to Live, before the medley concludes on a quieter and more hopeful note.Apologies for the over the top flourishes, adrenaline was flowing from the emotional music (and also pressure to get a couple of takes recorded before having to pick up the kids from school - those daily miniboss battles are as rewarding as they are challenging!)#BaldursGate3 #BorislavSlavov #vgm #gamemusic #gameaudio #piano #arrangement00:00 Main Theme01:07 Weeping Dawn02:31 Down By The River04:09 Raphael's Final Act / The Power05:08 I Want To Live

However, this came very naturally and quickly as I was reminiscing about the game and noodling around yesterday (subsequently falling into the same deeply melancholic stupor that enveloped me when I first stepped into Harry's shoes!).So here is my tribute to a game that has (imho) deservedly retained it's #1 status in PC Gamer's Top 100 for the 3rd year running. Most likely more of the same to come from this OST when time permits!I fired up the game and picked one of the more standout depressing moments to film some appropriate footage. Not sure it fits some of the parts where we hit the more hopeful major variation of the theme but... hey. Dora did say it might take 20 years for him to fully heal and recover but there's light at the end of the tunnel surely? Tifas Theme (Final Fantasy 7 [Nobuo Uematsu]) - Piano Collections Album Mark Choi 2020-06-25 | I couldn't re-record Aerith's theme without paying Tifa the same courtesy - especially given how much her track featured throughout FF7Remake in its various guises. While I'm a big fan of the EDM-style remix when Tifa and Aerith team up in Corneo's mansion (which also really suits her amazing high-octane fighting style), this version is much more reminiscent of the nostalgic version from the original.As with all of Hamaguchi-san's transcriptions, this one is masterfully done and lovely to play, and I've stuck with the same calm, delicate vibe as in Aerith's theme. As for the age-old question - Aerith or Tifa? Aeriths Theme (Final Fantasy 7 [Nobuo Uematsu]) - Piano Collections Album Mark Choi 2020-06-24 | FF7 Remake has been a beautiful experience. The game met my sky high expectations and I was so happy to hear both old and new remixes of some of the most classic video game music, including this piano transcription from the original collections album.After hearing this play at the start of Chapter 8 in that iconic church scene, I knew I had to re-record this myself with my updated setup. Not gonna lie - when I got to that part of the game, I was happy to just leave Cloud hanging around doing nothing while Aerith tended gently to the flowers as the music looped in the background...I've stuck with the same calm, delicate vibe throughout as much as possible, much like the version in the game. Back in the early days just a few months back, Maia would only ever sleep in our arms - nothing else seemed to work. During those sleepless nights, I dug up an old PS3 classic that I had always meant to play but had been unable to do so due to time constraints.So it came to pass that this beautiful game (Ni No Kuni/Another World - Wrath of the White Witch), which was animated by the incomparable Studio Ghibli, developed by the excellent Level 5 studio and given the full sonic treatment by the legendary Joe Hisaishi, became indelibly linked to my beautiful baby girl.As a tribute, I created a semi-virtuosic piano transcription of the main theme and squeezed in a quick recording during a rare moment alone in the house.
