How Male Seahorses Carry Their Offspring Museum of Science, Boston 2023-06-18 | Seahorse dads take parenting to a whole new level by carrying up to 2,000 eggs in their pouch. Seahorses and their close relatives sea dragons and pipefish males gestate the eggs in a special pouch. Following a courtship dance, the female will deposit her eggs in the male’s brood pouch, where they are fertilized and kept nourished by the male’s placenta. Dad will carry the eggs for up to 28 days, after which he will give birth to up to 2,000 fry, or live young. Some seahorse labors last as long as 12 hours. Meanwhile, Mom is already starting to produce her next batch of eggs. The red-footed tortoise is a species of tortoise native to South America. They are known for their distinct red, orange, or yellow markings on their legs and head. These tortoises are omnivorous and feed on a variety of plants, fruits, and insects, and can even be trained to see color (Carlos in particular goes straight to yellow). At the Museum’s Live Animal Care Center, they get a steady diet of mixed greens to keep them healthy!As part of his robust diet of greens, Carlos loves four-leaf clovers. Originally from Europe, these crabs have expanded their range due to warming waters associated with climate change. Known for their aggressive behavior and voracious appetite, they pose a significant threat to native species and delicate marine habitats. Females of the species can carry hundreds of thousands of eggs during their 9 to 10-month gestation period. Can You Make Your Shadow Glow With Science? Heiligenschein, Explained Museum of Science, Boston 2023-05-19 | Alex Dainis demonstrates the mind-bending optical phenomenon of Heiligenschein, which is this week’s Museum of Science and Dictionary.com Science Word of the Week. In certain conditions, when sunlight interacts with dewdrops on the grass, a fascinating optical phenomenon called Heiligenschein occurs. Dewdrops form tiny spheres on the blades of grass, which concentrate and reflect light in a peculiar way. When you observe your shadow in these conditions, you might notice a faint glow surrounding it. This glow, known as Heiligenschein, appears as a bright ring caused by the diffraction of light rays. It is visible around the shadow cast by a person's head on wet grass and creates a striking ethereal effect. Did NASAs Perseverance Mars Rover just find the Martian Mississippi?🤔 Museum of Science, Boston 2023-05-17 | New findings suggest the presence of a powerful river system that once flowed through Jezero Crater. The Perseverance rover found a rock that is extremely worn down by eons of wind erosion, but it looks like Perseverance has found the remnants of a strong, fast-flowing river that once fed water into Jezero Crater. This is the first time we’ve found evidence suggesting such a powerful waterway. And since, technically, no one can stop me, I’m personally going to call it the Martian Mississipi. This lunar occultation happens after sunrise in New England, but on the U.S. West Coast, Jupiter comes out from behind the moon during dawn twilight. Life Hack : Chill Your Drinks in Record Time! Museum of Science, Boston 2023-05-11 | In a rush to cool down some drinks before your next summer party? In this science experiment, Alex Dainis shows how you can speed up the process by adding salt to your cooler.Salt lowers the freezing point of water, meaning the water can get colder than its typical freezing point of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or zero degrees Celsius. When you add salt, it dissolves into the water and breaks apart into ions that interfere with the freezing process. This is why you might put salt down on your driveway to melt ice in the winter. But in the summer it means you can submerge your soda cans into a bath of water that’s even colder than regular ice, cooling it down faster than you would with just ice. And scientists studying the planet’s atmospheric escape rate like Boston University scientist Marissa Vogt have a pretty creative way of describing that loss.Vogt is a senior research scientist at the Boston University Center for Space Physics. Her research interests are planetary magnetic fields, ionospheres, and aurora.
